Rosh Hashanah

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita

Rosh Hashanah is such a special day โ€” thereโ€™s so much we can accomplish on this day, thereโ€™s so much our tefillos can achieve, thereโ€™s so much we can change and grow. It can be a day that will literally change our lives. So let us try to learn together some different ideas of ways that we can use Rosh Hashanah and turn it into a very meaningful day and a day that can really lift us up.

The Chofetz Chaim, in his drashah on Rosh Hashanah, cites the words in last weekโ€™s parashah, Nitzavim: ื›ึผึดื™ ื”ึทืžึผึดืฆึฐื•ึธื” ื”ึทื–ึผึนืืช ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ืžึฐืฆึทื•ึผึฐืšึธ ื”ึทื™ึผื•ึนื ืœึนื ื ึดืคึฐืœึตืืช ื”ึดื•ื ืžึดืžึผึฐืšึธ ื•ึฐืœึนื ืจึฐื—ึนืงึธื” ื”ึดื•ื… The Ramban teaches that this is referring to the mitzvah of teshuvah. We may feel that itโ€™s so hard to do teshuvah โ€” it may seem to be across the ocean, or in heaven, far away from us โ€” but itโ€™s really much closer than we think. It is possible to do teshuvah.

With just a few steps โ€” charatah, kabbalah al haโ€™asid, vidui โ€” a person can become a baal teshuvah.

This yesod of ืงึธืจื•ึนื‘ ืึตืœึถื™ืšึธ ื”ึทื“ึผึธื‘ึธืจ ืžึฐืึนื“ can change the lives of every one of us. On this meaningful day of Rosh Hashanah, we can really lift ourselves up, and itโ€™s much, much closer than we think.

The question is, how are we able to do this? What can we do?

The Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 16) teaches:

The baraisa there asks, citing Rabbi Akiva: What can we do to be zocheh bโ€™din? The truth is, the avodah that we have to do for each din is already there, in the mitzvas hayom:

Pesach is a time of judgment for grain, so Hashem said to bring the korban haโ€™omer, and in that way the grain will be blessed. So the mitzvah of bringing the omer on Pesach is the source of all the brachah necessary to be zocheh in the judgment. The Gemara goes on to say that Succos is the time of judgment on the water, and through the mitzvah of nisuch hamayim we are blessed with rain. What do we do on Rosh Hashanah? How can we make the coming year full of brachah? The Gemara continues:

When Chazal instituted the Mussaf Shemoneh Esrei of Rosh Hashanah, they gave us the tools to merit a shana tova: When we recite malchuyos, zichronos, and shofaros, we can change our year and be zocheh to a good, blessed year. The question is, how are we zocheh to this by saying Malchuyos, Zichronos and Shofaros? How can we turn this into a pivotal point in our lives that will make a real change? Weโ€™ve said these words on many a Rosh Hashanah, but how can we make them more meaningful?

Knowing Teruah

On the passuk (Tehillim 89): ืึทืฉืึฐืจึตื™ ื”ึธืขึธื ื™ื•ึนื“ึฐืขึตื™ ืชึฐืจื•ึผืขึธื” ื”’ ื‘ึผึฐืื•ึนืจ ืคึผึธื ึถื™ืšึธ ื™ึฐื”ึทืœึผึตื›ื•ึผืŸ, which we say after blowing the shofar, the Midrash wonders why the Jewish people are praised for โ€œknowing teruahโ€ โ€” the goyim also know how to blow a teruah! The Midrash explains that the Jewish people know how to appease their Creator through blowing shofar, causing Him to move from the throne of judgment to the throne of mercy and grant them a good, blessed year.

But how does the shofar appease Hashem? Rashi on the above passuk reveals the secret:

We understand the meaning behind the blowing of the shofar, which is kabbalas malchuyos, zichronos, and shofaros. In the tefillah, Chazal transmitted to us the meaning of the shofar. Even this year, when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos and we donโ€™t blow the shofar, we still have the aspect of ื™ื•ึนื“ึฐืขึตื™ ืชึฐืจื•ึผืขึธื” โ€” the secret meaning of the shofar, through the pesukim of malchuyos, zichronos, and shofaros.

Just as when we learn the parashiyos of korbanos itโ€™s considered as though we brought a korban, when we say the pesukim of malchuyos, zichronos, and shofaros itโ€™s as though we have the shofar itself. Through knowing the teruah, the passuk continues, we go in the light of Hashem: ื”’ ื‘ึผึฐืื•ึนืจ ืคึผึธื ึถื™ืšึธ ื™ึฐื”ึทืœึผึตื›ื•ึผืŸ.

This passuk conveys a tremendous revelation: that the avodah of Rosh Hashanah, through malchuyos, zichronos, and shofaros, brings a new light to our life, a new meaning in our life, a new understanding in our life. Thatโ€™s what causes the change in a person.

Throughout the month of Elul, and in Tishrei through Shemini Atzeres, we say the kapittel beginning:ืœึฐื“ึธื•ึดื“ ื”’ ืื•ึนืจึดื™ ื•ึฐื™ึดืฉืึฐืขึดื™ . Why do we say this kapittel?

One reason is that the Midrash (Shocher Tov) says that the word ืื•ึนืจึดื™ alludes to Rosh Hashanah, while ื•ึฐื™ึดืฉืึฐืขึดื™ alludes to Yom Kippur. We can understand the connection between salvation and Yom Kippur, when we merit forgiveness and atonement, but how is light connected to Rosh Hashanah? Do we light a menorah on Rosh Hashanah? What light do we have then?

Furthermore, we have the mitzvah of kabbalas ol malchus Shomayim all year, so what is special about the kabbalas malchus on Rosh Hashanah?

On Rosh Hashanah a great revelation of light descends from Shomayim, through which a person can gain a new understanding and outlook on life. When he says the words of malchuyos, he can understand and feel the malchuyos in a way he canโ€™t feel the whole year. This is the light of Rosh Hashanah โ€” ืื•ึนืจึดื™. Itโ€™s an eye opener: You can be walking in the dark, stumbling, and suddenly someone turns on the light and you see the world from a whole different perfective. On Rosh Hashanah Hashem turns on the lights for us, enabling us to look at the world from a new outlook, an outlook that will change our life. What is that light? Rashi says itโ€™s malchuyos, zichronos and shofaros. When we look at the world in a new light and see Hashem that is the King and Heโ€™s running the world, itโ€™s a different world.

We can look at the world, see whatโ€™s going on, and think that the government is in charge, and made a gezeirah of hefker in Eretz Yisrael โ€“ or we could look and say is that everything is from Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Corona is a certain thing that happened and itโ€™s spreading โ€” we should see it as Hashem sending a message to us.

Two people can live in the same world, but one lives in darkness, while the other sees the light of emunah ,the light of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. So when weโ€™re saying malchuyos this Rosh Hashanah, we can really feel Hashem is the king. The whole world has been shaken up; Hashem showed the world Whoโ€™s really in charge. And when it comes to this Rosh Hashanah we can fathom it and feel it in a way that we havenโ€™t felt it before. When we say the pesukim of malchuyos itโ€™s very mesugal to feel that โ€œHashem melechโ€: He runs the world, He changes the world, He is behind everything in the world.

Thatโ€™s the first stage, but itโ€™s not enough to know it in your head โ€” you have to live it and feel it: ื•ึฐื™ึธื“ึทืขึฐืชึผึธ ื”ึทื™ึผื•ึนื ื•ึทื”ึฒืฉืึตื‘ึนืชึธ ืึถืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ โ€” because the heart is the king of the limbs, and when we have a feeling in our heart it changes our life.

Three Levels of Malchus

Rosh Hashanah is one of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, but how is it part of Aseres Yemei Teshuvah if weโ€™re not doing teshuvah for personal sins?

The answer is that the avodah of teshuvah starts way before. Why should I want to change and be different? Because thereโ€™s a din coming up, and as soon as the din is over Iโ€™ll be back to being myself. That is what happens to many people. But if I understand the world differently, and I recognize that Hashem is running the world and Iโ€™m totally dependent on Him for everything, then Iโ€™m living in a different world โ€“ Iโ€™m a different person! Then, even when the din is over, the change, the ื™ืฉ ืงื•ื ื” ืขื•ืœืžื• ื‘ืฉืขื” ืื—ืช, will endure forever.

We can be zocheh to an ohr gadol: ื•ืฉืžืš ื ื•ืจื ืขืœ ื›ืœ ืžื” ืฉื‘ืจืืช. Think about the times when you were worried, when you were sick, when you were really scared. During those moments, you really felt ื•ืฉืžืš ื ื•ืจื ืขืœ ื›ืœ ืžื” ืฉื‘ืจืืช โ€” and those moments are worth millions, because you really felt that youโ€™re in Hashemโ€™s hands.

There are two levels of malchus. The first one is when a king is appointed or a president is elected and everyone comes to cheer and give accolades. And thereโ€™s a second, special level: If you talk to Hashem and say โ€œHashem melech,โ€ and you really mean it.

But then thereโ€™s another level: that of the person who begs at the kingโ€™s feet and says, โ€œThe authorities are after me โ€” please pardon me! If not, I can spend 25 years in prison. Please help me! Take me out of jail!โ€

If someone is begging Hashem, โ€œPlease save my life,โ€ thatโ€™s a much higher level of malchus.

On Rosh Hashanah the sifrei chaim and sifrei meisim are open. Weโ€™ve seen this year so many shocking deaths; weโ€™ve seen peopleโ€™s parnassah shaken up. We really feel this year the ืžื™ ื™ืฉืœื• ื•ืžื™ ื™ืชื™ื™ืกืจ โ€” who will rest, who will want to go places and canโ€™t go, whose weddings will be ruined, who wonโ€™t have what they thought they would have. Weโ€™ve been shaken up this year; we see Hashem runs the world. We really have to beg Hashem โ€” letโ€™s get on our hands and knees, figuratively, and pour our hearts out to Hashem. Thatโ€™s the second level of malchus, that of someone whoโ€™s bowing down to the melech.

The third level of malchus of soldiers who work in the army of the king: they give their life for the king, they fight for him, they give him their all. Thatโ€™s the third level of malchus: Akeidas Yitzchak and Avraham. Thatโ€™s what we say in zichronos, in their merit, and when we continue their way thatโ€™s the third level of malchus. True, we donโ€™t have any Akeidah in our times, but when a person is shomer Torah uโ€™mitzvos โ€” he doesnโ€™t steal, he doesnโ€™t lie, he acts with integrity, he displays good middos in dealing with his family and the people around him, he comes and learns sedarim and davens like a mentch, heโ€™s giving his life for Torah and mitzvos โ€” thatโ€™s the Akeidah, thatโ€™s a continuation of the way of the Avos, thatโ€™s mesirus nefesh, and that stirs the zechus Avos. Thatโ€™s the third level of malchus: โ€œHashem, Iโ€™m willing to work for You! Iโ€™m willing to give to You!โ€

The recitation of malchuyos should be with the depth of understanding of what malchuyos means: weโ€™re begging for our life, and everything about our year is being decided. Every pleasure and every pain, health, sickness, parnassah โ€” everything. The third level is to be mekabel His malchus and resolve to do His will, but itโ€™s not the kind of kabbalas malchus in which a person thinks, โ€œNebach, Iโ€™m forced to work for this king.โ€ Itโ€™s a kabbalas malchus with happiness, because we know the King we work for is so good to us. Hashem gives us Torah and mitzvos to be meitiv to us: ืืฉืจื™ ืื™ืฉ ืฉืœื ื™ืฉื›ื—ืš ื•ื‘ืŸ ืื“ื ื™ืชืืžืฅ ื‘ืš, Hashem is the source of life and brachah, so weโ€™re mekabel his malchus happily and willingly. We give of ourselves because we know itโ€™s the best thing in the world.

Those are the three levels of malchus, each of which we can connect to. When we think about this, it can change our life and we can walk out different people, and that causes that we should be zocheh to a good year.

The Maharil Diskin davened Mussaf the whole day; when he finished his silent Shemoneh Esrei they started Minchah. Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld asked him, โ€œWhich kavanos do you have?โ€ He thought he would say the kavanos of the Arizal, or kabbalah, or other secrets, but the Maharil Diskin answered, โ€œPeirush hamilim.โ€ These words are an ohr gadol. They can change your life, enhance your life, and lift you up. Say it with feeling: โ€œHashem Elokeinu!โ€ True, youโ€™ve said it so many times, but this time it can penetrate so deeply โ€” it can light up your life, light up who you are as a person, light up the way you look at the world, light up the way you understand Torah and mitzvos. Your future hatzlachah is dependent on your Torah and mitzvos, and you can feel it so deeply. That will help you take the steps to go in the right direction and improve your Torah and mitzvos. Thatโ€™s the first type of teshuvah.

Together, we should be a nation of ื™ื•ึนื“ึฐืขึตื™ ืชึฐืจื•ึผืขึธื”, davening Mussaf in a way weโ€™ve never davened before. Every year it gets better. Our tefillos should ascend lโ€™ratzon before Hashem, and cause Him to move from the throne of judgment, which weโ€™ve seen in the world so strongly. Of course, weโ€™ve seen loads of chessed too, but thereโ€™s also sickness, din, galus. Hashem should hear the voice of our heart, of ื™ื•ึนื“ึฐืขึตื™ ืชึฐืจื•ึผืขึธื”, and bring a shana tova uโ€™mevoreches to every individual and to Klal Yisrael as a whole.

The beautiful words that come out of our mouths โ€” ืืžืจื• ืœืคื ื™ ืžืœื›ื•ื™ื•ืช โ€” and the feelings that emerge from our hearts should create a kesser malchus for Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and we should merit speedily that His Name should be revealed upon us as He gathers us from galus.

You should all be zocheh to a gut, gebentched yahr.
