Pathways to Mitigate Pain

Parashas Vayigash

Harav Hagaon Yehuda Wagshal

We live in a world where we often face painful situations, whether itโ€™s physical pain, emotional pain, or perhaps spiritual pain. And itโ€™s crucial that we understand what the Torah recommends as the proper reaction to pain.

When a person is in pain, heโ€™s in danger of making the wrong decisions, by looking for ways to ease his pain that are not recommended and reacting to people around him in ways that can be harmful. Itโ€™s very important to understand what the Torah recommends as the correct reaction to pain.

I would like to discuss two points regarding how the Torah teaches us to react to pain. One of them is raised by the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh in this weekโ€™s parashah. The Ohr Hachaim cites the Midrash that the shibud in Mitzrayim did not begin immediately when Klal Yisrael went to Mitzrayim, but only after the people who originally descended to Mitzrayim passed away, as the passuk says, in Parashas Shemos: ื•ึทื™ึธึผืžึธืช ื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ ื•ึฐื›ึธืœ ืึถื—ึธื™ื• ื•ึฐื›ึนืœ ื”ึทื“ึผื•ึนืจ ื”ึทื”ื•ึผื. It sounds as though the shibud could not begin as long as any of the yordei Mitzrayim were alive. But that was not exactly the case, notes the Ohr Hachaim, since Serach Bas Asher and Yocheved, who were among the yordei Mitzrayim, lived through the shibud. Why didnโ€™t the presence of those yordei Mitzrayim prevent the shibud from beginning?

The Ohr Hachaim derives an answer from the way the Torah describes Yaakovโ€™s descent to Mitzrayim: ื•ึทื™ึธึผื‘ึนืื•ึผ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึธื™ึฐืžึธื” ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ ื•ึฐื›ึธืœ ื–ึทืจึฐืขื•ึน ืึดืชึผื•ึน. Why, after informing us that Yaakov and all his offspring arrived in Mitzrayim, does the Torah have to detail that he brought his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters?

Step One is Acceptance

The Ohr Hachaim explains that when Yaakov Avinu notified his family that it was time to go down to Mitzrayim, which would mean galus Mitzrayim, he encountered two reactions. Some people in the family were ready to accept the gezeirah min hashamayim and go willingly into the galus, while others did not want to go. They werenโ€™t willing to face the suffering and difficulties that this would entail, and they wanted to stay in Eretz Yisrael, so Yaakov had to force them to come along with him.

The Torah alludes to these two groups by first telling us that Yaakov came to Mitzrayim with his family โ€” ื•ึทื™ึธึผื‘ึนืื•ึผ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึธื™ึฐืžึธื” ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ ื•ึฐื›ึธืœ ื–ึทืจึฐืขื•ึน ืึดืชึผื•ึน โ€” and thenย  breaking down the family into two groups: ื‘ึธึผื ึธื™ื• ื•ึผื‘ึฐื ึตื™ ื‘ึธื ึธื™ื• ืึดืชึผื•ึน โ€” his sons and their sons came with him, ืึดืชึผื•ึน, willingly. But his daughters and granddaughters had to be forcibly brought to Mitzrayim, as evident from the words: ื‘ึฐึผื ึนืชึธื™ื• ื•ึผื‘ึฐื ื•ึนืช ื‘ึธึผื ึธื™ื• ื•ึฐื›ึธืœ ื–ึทืจึฐืขื•ึน ื”ึตื‘ึดื™ื ืึดืชึผื•ึน. Accordingly, says the Ohr Hachaim, when the Midrash states that the shibud did not begin as long as the yordei Mitzrayim were alive, that refers to the ones who came willingly. Those who were forced to come were not included in that group of yordei Mitzrayim, and they werenโ€™t able to prevent the shibud.

The Ohr Hachaim then explains why, coining the phrase: ืกืžื ื“ื™ืกื•ืจื™ ืงื™ื‘ื•ืœื™ โ€” the remedy for yissurim is kibuli, acceptance. The yordei Mitzrayim who came willingly were mekabel the gezeirah and the yissurim, and that itself was the remedy that pushed off the shibud. Those who were forced to come, however, did not benefit from this remedy, and the shibud began even though they were still alive.

With this, the Torah is teaching us how a Yid is supposed to react to painful situations. The first thing we want to do if weโ€™re in pain is to ease the pain, but fighting the pain sometimes makes the pain worse. The kibuli, the acceptance of the ratzon Hashem, is itself a segulah to ease the pain.

Not a Rejection

Another Torah approach to dealing with pain is presented by the Orchos Tzaddikim, when discussing zerizus. He explains that when a person finds himself in a painful situation โ€” whether he lost his money, or he lost a loved one, or any other type of yissurim โ€” he should spur his thoughts to ahavas Hashem, and that will remove the pain from his heart.

How does that work? If a person lost his money, or lost a loved one, how can ahavas Hashem ease the pain of that loss?

Perhaps the Orchos Tzaddikim means that when a person experiences something painful, there are really two things causing him pain. The loss itself is painful, but thereโ€™s also the feeling of rejection: Why am I the target of all this pain? Why is this happening to me? That feeling magnifies the pain, and can be far more intense than the pain itself.

We find an illustration of this in the incident of Kayin and Hevel. Kayin innovated the concept of bringing korbanos, and Hevel followed him, but Kayinโ€™s korban was rejected while Hevelโ€™s was accepted. Subsequently, Kayin killed Hevel, as the passuk describes:

Targum Yonasan ben Uziel sheds light on what Kayin discussed with Hevel. โ€œThereโ€™s no Creator,โ€ Kayin told Hevel. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s no reward and punishment. The world is hefker, and we can do as we please.โ€ Hearing this kefirah, Hevel argued, insisting that there is a Creator and that our actions do have consequences. In the midst of this ideological argument, Kayin got up and killed Hevel.

How can it be, Rav Chaim Shmulevitz wonders, that Kayin suddenly became an apikorus, just moments after innovating the concept of korbanos, which meant that he must have recognized that there is a Creator?

He explains that while it was painful for Kayin that his korban was not accepted, Kayin suffered the added pain of rejection, and that caused him to lose his mind and fall from the highest level of introducing the idea of korbanos to the lowest depths of kefirah.

When a person feels rejected, he can fall to very low places.

Any time a person endures pain, the actual difficulty of the situation can be compounded by the feeling of rejection, which is sometimes even worse than the pain of the actual experience, and carries the danger of the person slipping to a place where he does not want to be.

Perhaps this is why the Orchos Tzaddikim recommends that a person in pain should spur his thoughts to ahavas Hashem. Ahavas Hashem will not get him back his money or his loved one; that pain heโ€™ll still have. But the added pain of rejection can be overcome with ahavas Hashem, which helps a person understand that if this painful thing happened to him, it does not mean he was just the target of Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s anger. Through ahavas Hashem, a person can recognize that if Hakadosh Baruch Hu did this, then thereโ€™s a purpose to it, something he has to learn, some way he is supposed to grow.

The Torah teaches us that when dealing with pain, acceptance itself eases the pain, and when a person accepts the pain lovingly, spurring his thoughts to ahavas Hashem, that also eases the extra pain of rejection, of โ€œwhy me.โ€

Hashem should help that we should not know of any tzaar, but if a person does find himself in a painful situation, these are the tools that the Torah offers to get through it safely.
