Elefant, Harav Hagaon Yosef Shlita

Wrapping the Tallis, Focusing Our Minds

Yamim Noraโ€™im

Harav Hagaon Yosef Elefant Shlita

The Meiri, in his work on teshuvah, says that the purpose of Selichos, beyond the obvious purpose of davening for mechilah, selichah, and kapparah, is that a person should come into Rosh Hashanah with taharas halev, purity of the heart.

The insight of the Meiri gives us a new outlook on Selichos, and a higher goal in reciting them. Besides the request for mechilah, selichah, and kapparah, which is definitely the main purpose, thereโ€™s also an effect that Selichos have on a person, as it creates some sort of taharas halev, which is critical for going into the Yamim Noraโ€™im.

We say in Selichos every day: Thereโ€™s something special about the way we come to say Selichos โ€” we see ourselves as paupers. Chazal actually say: ื›ืœ ืฉื ื” ืฉืจืฉื” ื‘ืชื—ืœืชื” ืžืชืขืฉืจืช ื‘ืกื•ืคื”, a year that begins with hisbatlus is blessed in the end. But perhaps thereโ€™s another lesson to be gleaned from the idea that Selichos are said ื›ึฐึผื“ึทืœึดึผื™ื ื•ึผื›ึฐืจึธืฉึดืื™ื, which is perhaps related to the taharas halev that is so important for us to have going into the Yamim Noraโ€™im.

Regarding the passuk: ื•ึทื™ึทึผืขึฒื‘ึนืจ ื”’ ืขึทืœ ืคึธึผื ึธื™ื• ื•ึทื™ึดึผืงึฐืจึธื, the Gemara states (Rosh Hashanah 17b): ืžืœืžื“ ืฉื ืชืขื˜ืฃ ื”ืงื‘”ื” ื›ืฉืœื™ื— ืฆื‘ื•ืจ ื•ื”ืจืื” ืœื• ืœืžืฉื” ืกื“ืจ ืชืคืœื” ืืžืจ ืœื• ื›ืœ ื–ืžืŸ ืฉื™ืฉืจืืœ ื—ื•ื˜ืื™ืŸ ื™ืขืฉื• ืœืคื ื™ ื›ืกื“ืจ ื”ื–ื” ื•ืื ื™ ืžื•ื—ืœ ืœื”ื โ€” Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€œwrapped Himself in a tallis, like a shaliach tzibbur,โ€ and told Moshe Rabbeinu, โ€œThis is what you should do when Klal Yisrael does a chet, in order to bring them kapparah.โ€ From the Torahโ€™s description of Hashem passing before Moshe โ€” rather than stating that He recited the 13 Middos Harachamim โ€” Chazal infer that He gave Moshe a demonstration, wrapping Himself in a tallis and instructing Moshe that this is what should be done.

Why the Demonstration?ย

The Maharal, in Beโ€™er Hagolah, poses a question regarding this Gemara. We donโ€™t find anywhere else in the Torah, he says, that Hakadosh Baruch Hu had to demonstrate how something is done โ€” and this is not the hardest thing in the Torah to understand. Why, then, is it the one thing that required a demonstration? Hakadosh Baruch Hu could just as well have told Moshe Rabbeinu that when Klal Yisrael does a chet, you should wrap yourself in a tallis and recite the 13 Middos. The command alone should have been enough, as with every other mitzvah!

The Maharal notes that the Torah goes on to relate that Moshe Rabbeinu requested: ื”ึทืจึฐืึตื ึดื™ ื ึธื ืึถืช ื›ึฐึผื‘ึนื“ึถืšึธ โ€” Please show me Your essence.

โ€œI canโ€™t show you my full glory,โ€ Hashem responded, โ€œbut Iโ€™m going to show you the 13 Middos Harachamim: ืึฒื ึดื™ ืึทืขึฒื‘ึดื™ืจ ื›ึธึผืœ ื˜ื•ึผื‘ึดื™ ืขึทืœ ืคึธึผื ึถื™ืšึธ.โ€ The Maharal explains that, on a simple level, the reason why Hakadosh Baruch Hu made a demonstration of wrapping Himself in a tallis was that Moshe Rabbeinu asked for a demonstration; he said ื”ึทืจึฐืึตื ึดื™, show me. But the question remains, how did Hashemโ€™s wrapping Himself in a tallis constitute showing Moshe His glory?

The Maharal answers that when a person places a tallis over his head, what he is really doing is pushing away all distractions, all worries, desires, and agendas, and focusing only on Hakadosh Baruch Hu. You donโ€™t look to the right, or the left โ€” you focus solely on Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

What does that have to do with seeing ื›ึธึผืœ ื˜ื•ึผื‘ึดื™?

The answer is that Hakadosh Baruch Hu isื›ึธึผืœ ื˜ื•ึผื‘ึดื™ ย โ€” He is chessed and rachamim; He is the 13 Middos Harachamim.

โ€œAs much as you are with Me,โ€ Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, โ€œI am with you.โ€

A person needs to attach himself to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and to the extent that He does so, Hashem is with him. What Hashem was conveying to Klal Yisrael, for all generations, by wrapping Himself in a tallis, is that if we want to access Hashemโ€™s ื›ึธึผืœ ื˜ื•ึผื‘ึดื™, all we need to do is focus on Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and then He is with us. Hashem is essentially goodness and kindness, but to connect with that, we need to focus and refocus on Him.

So when Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted to show Klal Yisrael, or Moshe Rabbeinu, His chessed โ€” ื›ึธึผืœ ื˜ื•ึผื‘ึดื™ โ€” He demonstrated it by wrapping Himself in a tallis, because the act of focusing on Him, as represented by wearing a tallis, enables a person to โ€œseeโ€ Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

This idea, continues the Maharal, sheds light on the passuk: ืชึฐึผืคึดืœึธึผื” ืœึฐืขึธื ึดื™ ื›ึดื™ ื™ึทืขึฒื˜ึนืฃ ื•ึฐืœึดืคึฐื ึตื™ ื”’ ื™ึดืฉึฐืืคึนึผืšึฐ ืฉึดื‚ื™ื—ื•ึน. Why is the pauper described as โ€œwrappingโ€ himself before Hashem? Because a pauper has no agenda other than his neediness.

The expressing of โ€œwrappingโ€ oneself conveys that a person has nothing else on his mind. When a person davens like an ani, placing his tallis over his head and banishing all other agendas so that he can focus only on what Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants, then he is truly ืœึดืคึฐื ึตื™ ื”’. Thatโ€™s the taharas halev that weโ€™re looking for. The act of ื™ึทืขึฒื˜ึนืฃ reveals Hashemโ€™s Middas Hachessed, the ื”’ ื”’ ืงึตืœ ืจึทื—ื•ึผื ื•ึฐื—ึทื ึผื•ึผืŸ.

The reason why we say Selichos ื›ึฐึผื“ึทืœึดึผื™ื ื•ึผื›ึฐืจึธืฉึดืื™ื is that the idea of Selichos is ืชึฐึผืคึดืœึธึผื” ืœึฐืขึธื ึดื™ ื›ึดื™ ื™ึทืขึฒื˜ึนืฃ โ€” to refocus ourselves on what we really want. We place the tallis over our heads, not looking to the right or the left โ€” just as Hakadosh Baruch Hu Himself taught us. When the chazzan goes up and says ื•ึทื™ึทึผืขึฒื‘ึนืจ ื”’ ืขึทืœ ืคึธึผื ึธื™ื• ื•ึทื™ึดึผืงึฐืจึธื, heโ€™s reenacting exactly what Hakadosh Baruch Hu demonstrated when He taught us how to access the Middas Hachessed. โ€œFocus on Me!โ€ Hashem was telling us.

When we say Selichos in the manner of ื“ึทืœึดึผื™ื ื•ึผื›ึฐืจึธืฉึดืื™ื โ€”focused only on ืœึดืคึฐื ึตื™ ื”’ ื™ึดืฉึฐืืคึนึผืšึฐ ืฉึดื‚ื™ื—ื•ึน and nothing else โ€” we can go into the Yamim Noraโ€™im with taharas halev and say ืžึฐืœึนืšึฐ ืขึทืœ ื›ึธึผืœ ื”ึธืขื•ึนืœึธื ื›ึปึผืœึผื•ึน ื‘ึดึผื›ึฐื‘ื•ึนื“ึถืšึธ, davening that ื•ึฐื™ึตืขึธืฉื‚ื•ึผ ื›ึปืœึธึผื ืึฒื’ึปื“ึธึผื” ืึถื—ึธืช ืœึทืขึฒืฉื‚ื•ึนืช ืจึฐืฆื•ึนื ึฐืšึธ ื‘ึฐึผืœึตื‘ึธื‘ ืฉึธืืœึตื.

Gmar chasimah tovah, and a gut gebensht yahr to you, your families, and all of Klal Yisrael.
