The Path to Unburdening Yourself

Parashas Vaโ€™eira

Harav Hagaon Binyamin Cohen shlita

At the beginning of the parashah, Hakadosh Baruch Hu instructs Moshe Rabbeinu to go to Klal Yisrael and tell them: ื•ื”ื•ืฆืืชื™, ื•ื”ืฆืœืชื™, ื•ื’ืืœืชื™, ื•ืœืงื—ืชื™, ื•ื”ื‘ืืชื™. Moshe told this to Klal Yisrael, but they didnโ€™t listen, as the Torah continues: ื•ึทื™ึฐื“ึทื‘ึผึตืจ ืžึนืฉืึถื” ื›ึผึตืŸ ืึถืœ ื‘ึผึฐื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ ื•ึฐืœึนื ืฉืึธืžึฐืขื•ึผ ืึถืœ ืžึนืฉืึถื” ืžึดืงึผึนืฆึถืจ ืจื•ึผื—ึท ื•ึผืžึตืขึฒื‘ึนื“ึธื” ืงึธืฉืึธื”. Then, the Torah says, Hakadosh Baruch Hu told Moshe Rabbeinu to go to Pharaoh and tell him to send Klal Yisrael out of Mitzrayim, and Moshe Rabbeinu answered, โ€œI just spoke to Klal Yisrael and they didnโ€™t listen to me, so how will Pharaoh listen: ื”ึตืŸ ื‘ึผึฐื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ ืœึนื ืฉืึธืžึฐืขื•ึผ ืึตืœึทื™ ื•ึฐืึตื™ืšึฐ ื™ึดืฉืึฐืžึธืขึตื ึดื™ ืคึทืจึฐืขึนื” ื•ึทืึฒื ึดื™ ืขึฒืจึทืœ ืฉื‚ึฐืคึธืชึธื™ึดื? Rashi comments that this is one of the ten instances of kal vโ€™chomer that appear in the Torah: If Klal Yisrael โ€” the kal โ€” wonโ€™t listen to me, then certainly Pharaoh will not listen to me!

The Sifsei Chachamim cites the well-known question of the Reโ€™em, R’ Eliyahu Mizrachi, who points out the logical problem with this kal vโ€™chomer: The passuk tells us clearly why Klal Yisrael did not listen to Moshe Rabbeinu โ€” it was because they suffered from kotzer ruach and avodah kashah. A person who is suffering is typically short of breath, which renders him unable to listen to dvar Hashem. But Pharaoh was a king โ€” he had no difficulties, and therefore no reason not to listen to Moshe Rabbeinu.

There was a very specific reason, then, why Klal Yisrael didnโ€™t listen to Moshe Rabbeinu, but Pharaoh had no reason not to listen to him. So whereโ€™s the kal vโ€™chomer?

The Mizrachi answers that when Moshe Rabbeinu conveyed to Klal Yisrael the nevuah of: ื•ื”ื•ืฆืืชื™, ื•ื”ืฆืœืชื™, ื•ื’ืืœืชื™, ื•ืœืงื—ืชื™, ื•ื”ื‘ืืชื™, he didnโ€™t realize that they didnโ€™t listen to him because they were suffering from shortness of breath and hard labor. Therefore, according to Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s understanding, there was a perfectly logical kal vโ€™chomer โ€” if Klal Yisrael didnโ€™t listen, then certainly Pharaoh wonโ€™t โ€” but in reality there was no kal vโ€™chomer.

When Thereโ€™s Room in the Heartโ€ฆ

The baalei mussar suggest a different approach. When the Torah says: ื•ึฐืœึนื ืฉืึธืžึฐืขื•ึผ ืึถืœ ืžึนืฉืึถื”, it doesnโ€™t mean that they didnโ€™t hear Moshe. They werenโ€™t deaf; they heard his words. โ€œThey didnโ€™t hearโ€ means, as the Sforno says, that they didnโ€™t incline their hearts to contemplate and believe dvar Hashem. Because they suffered from shortness of breath and hard labor, and led difficult, painful lives, they lacked the motivation to look into the matter and internalize the dvar Hashem. In this vein, the Mesilas Yesharim states (ch. 2) that Pharaohโ€™s strategy was to keep Klal Yisrael so busy working that they wouldnโ€™t be able to plot how to overthrow him, as he said: ืชึผึดื›ึฐื‘ึผึทื“ ื”ึธืขึฒื‘ึนื“ึธื” ืขึทืœ ื”ึธืึฒื ึธืฉืึดื™ื ื•ึฐื™ึทืขึฒืฉื‚ื•ึผ ื‘ึธื”ึผ ื•ึฐืึทืœ ื™ึดืฉืึฐืขื•ึผ ื‘ึผึฐื“ึดื‘ึฐืจึตื™ ืฉืึธืงึถืจ. In other words, a person whoโ€™s very busy and overwhelmed lacks the desire and the ability to think and strategize.

This is why Klal Yisrael werenโ€™t able to listen to Moshe Rabbeinu. But thereโ€™s another reason why a person might not be able to contemplate or listen to the dvar Hashem, and thatโ€™s if heโ€™s immersed in fulfilling his own desires and sidetracked by conceit and other bad middos. Accordingly, explain the baalei mussar, the kal vโ€™chomer is that if Klal Yisrael were unable to internalize the dvar Hashem because of their hard labor, then certainly Pharaoh, who is immersed in his own taavah and gaavah, would not have the ability or the desire to heed the dvar Hashem.

What emerges, then, is that when a person doesnโ€™t listen to and doesnโ€™t believe in dvar Hashem, itโ€™s not because logically he doesnโ€™t accept it โ€” itโ€™s because he doesnโ€™t have the will and the desire to look into it and believe it.

Twice a day, in Krias Shema, we remind ourselves of the Torahโ€™s warning not to stray after our hearts: ื•ึฐืœึนื ืชึธืชื•ึผืจื•ึผ ืึทื—ึฒืจึตื™ ืœึฐื‘ึทื‘ึฐื›ึถื ื•ึฐืึทื—ึฒืจึตื™ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ื›ึถื. Chazal expound the words ื•ึฐืœึนื ืชึธืชื•ึผืจื•ึผ ืึทื—ึฒืจึตื™ ืœึฐื‘ึทื‘ึฐื›ึถื as a reference to ืžื™ื ื•ืช, apikorsus. Yet we know that apikorsus is not in the heart, itโ€™s in the mind! So why doesnโ€™t the Torah caution us not to stray after our minds? The answer is that the heart doesnโ€™t allow the person to contemplate, to believe, to understand. Indeed, we see that although Pharaoh witnessed all the makkos and the tremendous nissim that Hashem performed before his eyes, he was unaffected by them โ€” because if the heart is not there, the person canโ€™t understand dvar Hashem.

At the end of the parashah, regarding Makkas Barad, the Torah says that those who had yiras Shomayim brought their animals inside and those who didnโ€™t care to listen to the dvar Hashem left their animals out in the field: ื”ึทื™ึผึธืจึตื ืึถืช ื“ึผึฐื‘ึทืจ ื”’ ืžึตืขึทื‘ึฐื“ึตื™ ืคึผึทืจึฐืขึนื” ื”ึตื ึดื™ืก ืึถืช ืขึฒื‘ึธื“ึธื™ื• ื•ึฐืึถืช ืžึดืงึฐื ึตื”ื•ึผ ืึถืœ ื”ึทื‘ึผึธืชึผึดื™ื ื•ึทืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืœึนื ืฉื‚ึธื ืœึดื‘ึผื•ึน ืึถืœ ื“ึผึฐื‘ึทืจ ื”’ ื•ึทื™ึผึทืขึฒื–ึนื‘ ืึถืช ืขึฒื‘ึธื“ึธื™ื• ื•ึฐืึถืช ืžึดืงึฐื ึตื”ื•ึผ ื‘ึผึทืฉึผื‚ึธื“ึถื”. The Targum Yonasan ben Uziel says that ื”ึทื™ึผึธืจึตื ืึถืช ื“ึผึฐื‘ึทืจ ื”’ is a reference to Iyov, who brought in his animals, and ื•ึทืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืœึนื ืฉื‚ึธื ืœึดื‘ึผื•ึน is a reference to Bilam Harasha. Bilam, we know, merited nevuah, and the Rambam says that in order to merit nevuah a person must first achieve all the levels of chochmah. Bilam must have been a very smart man, then. So didnโ€™t he realize, after experiencing seven makkos already, that he was going to lose all his animals? Such a smart man should have realized such a thing.

The answer is found in the words: ื•ึทืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืœึนื ืฉื‚ึธื ืœึดื‘ึผื•ึน โ€” he was missing the lev, the ratzon. ย Without the heart, without the desire to contemplate and believe, a person wonโ€™t be able to accept the dvar Hashem. Only someone who has yiras Shomayim โ€” ื”ึทื™ึผึธืจึตื ืึถืช ื“ึผึฐื‘ึทืจ ื”’ โ€” and is prepared to submit himself to listen to Hashem, is able to accept Hashemโ€™s word, and only those people brought in their animals.

Torah Creates Headspace

Is there an eitzah for a person who finds himself in a situation of kotzer ruach โ€” overwhelmed, burdened with life?

The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh in this weekโ€™s parashah gives us the eitzah. The reason a person reaches a situation of kotzer ruach is because heโ€™s not mekabel Torah. Had they been bnei Torah, they would have been able to contemplate, understand, and accept the dvar Hashem, because the Torah broadens a personโ€™s heart, even if heโ€™s short of breath and overwhelmed and doesnโ€™t have the ability to accept more in his life. Torah gives a person much more headspace, enabling him to choose good and preventing the yetzer hara from dominating him; heโ€™s able to recognize whatโ€™s the right thing to do and to work on doing it, without becoming overwhelmed. Indeed, the Mishnah (Avos 6:2) teaches: ืฉืื™ืŸ ืœืš ื‘ืŸ ื—ื•ืจื™ืŸ ืืœื ืžื™ ืฉืขื•ืกืง ื‘ืชืœืžื•ื“ ืชื•ืจื” โ€” as soon as a person learns Torah he becomes a free man.

People who feel overwhelmed and stressed with their daily schedule should try to add another shiur, or a chavrusa, to their schedule and incorporate more limud haTorah. Those who do this see the tremendous power of Torah to remove the kotzer ruach and eliminate stress, because the Torah affords a person harchavas hadaas, helping him to become a better oveid Hashem and a better ben Torah.

We should all be zocheh to grow and continue in our avodas Hashem and limud haTorah.

Gut Shabbos.
