Staying Separate

Parashas Shemos

Harav Hagaon Binyamin Cohen shlita

The parashah begins with the words:

Rashi is bothered by the obvious question: Why does the Torah have to tell us that Yosef was in Mitzrayim? Donโ€™t we know that already? We had four parashiyos โ€” Vayeishev, Mikeitz, Vayigash, Vayechi โ€” that discussed Yosefโ€™s being in Mitzrayim!

The Torah is informing us of Yosefโ€™s righteousness. Yosef didnโ€™t lose his madreigah โ€” ย the Yosef who shepherded his fatherโ€™s sheep was the same Yosef when he became a viceroy in Mitzrayim.

What was so special about Yosefโ€™s shepherding his fatherโ€™s sheep?

R’ Meir Soloveitchik ztโ€l explained this based on an insight of Rabbeinu Bachaye on Parashas Vayigash. We find that the Avos, the shevatim, and many other leaders of Klal Yisrael โ€” such as Moshe and Dovid โ€” were shepherds. Why did they pick this occupation? He gives a few reasons: It is a good parnassah, as the sheep produce wool, milk, and offspring; it is easy, and devoid of the aveiros that come up in business; and the work is performed far from the city, out in the hills and grazing lands, where the shepherd is not influenced by others in society. As shepherds, they also had time to be misboded with Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

When the Torah tells us that Yosef was a shepherd, it is conveying to us that he was kadosh vโ€™tahor, not influenced by society, and Rashi is telling us that he remained that way even when he was a king in Mitzrayim.

We can still wonder, however, why the Torah deemed it necessary, at the beginning of Sefer Shemos, to highlight Yosefโ€™s righteousness. What lesson is this conveying?

Mingling Brings Galus

We know that thereโ€™s a fundamental difference between galus and geulah: Galus is when Klal Yisrael are dispersed among the nations of the world, and geulah is when they are separate from those nations, as Bilam said: ื”ึถืŸ ืขึธื ืœึฐื‘ึธื“ึธื“ ื™ึดืฉึฐืื›ึนึผืŸ ื•ึผื‘ึทื’ึผื•ึนื™ึดื ืœึนื ื™ึดืชึฐื—ึทืฉึธึผืื‘. Klal Yisrael is a nation that dwells alone, and does not mingle with other nations. Weโ€™re not part of the number of the rest of the peoples of the world โ€” weโ€™re muvdal. This traces back to Avraham Avinu, who was known as the Ivri, since the whole world was on one side, while he was on the other side.

In informing us that Yosef was in Mitzrayim, the Torah is giving us a paradigm of this quality of being separate: Even in Mitzrayim, Yosef remained like a shepherd, completely separated from the influences of society.

But with his passing, there was a shift, as the Torah states: ื•ึทื™ึธึผืžึธืช ื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ ื•ึฐื›ึธืœ ืึถื—ึธื™ื• ื•ึฐื›ึนืœ ื”ึทื“ึผื•ึนืจ ื”ึทื”ื•ึผื, and the next passuk says: ื•ึทืชึดึผืžึธึผืœึตื ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืึนืชึธื. The Yidden filled the whole land of Mitzrayim, and were no longer only in Goshen, separated in their own land. Thatโ€™s when the galus started: ื•ึทื™ึธึผืงึธื ืžึถืœึถืšึฐ ื—ึธื“ึธืฉื ืขึทืœ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึธื™ึดื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืœึนื ื™ึธื“ึทืข ืึถืช ื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ. The Torah is emphasizing the difference between the galus and the geulah.

Klal Yisrael ultimately merited to leave the galus in the zechus of not changing their names, their language, and their clothing โ€” three things that separate Klal Yisrael and identify us as different from the nations of the world.

Klal Yisrael were also given two mitzvos before they left Mitzrayim: dam Pesach and dam milah. What is unique about these mitzvos, out of all the 613 mitzvos? Dam Pesach represents separation from avodah zarah โ€” ืžึดืฉึฐืื›ื•ึผ ื•ึผืงึฐื—ื•ึผ. The Egyptians worshipped sheep, and Klal Yisrael separated themselves from avodah zarah by bringing sheep as a korban, thereby highlighting the difference between them and the nations. And dam milah represents the bris between Klal Yisrael and Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

Retaining Separation

How does a person achieve this madreigah of being muvdal, separating himself from the outside world? The Rambam teaches (Hilchos Deios 6:1) that Hakadosh Baruch Hu created a natural instinct within every human to be pulled and influenced โ€” in his outlook and his behavior โ€” by his friends and society. Therefore, the Rambam rules, a person must connect himself to tzaddikim and associate with chachamim in order to learn from the way they live.

The Rambam adds the word: tamid โ€” always. Every Yid must place himself among tzaddikim and chachamim always.

If a person is living in a country where people are behaving improperly, continues the Rambam, he must move to a place where the people are tzaddikim. What do you do if all the countries that you know of are inhabited by people who act improperly โ€” โ€œlike in our time,โ€ says the Rambam? Then a person should go live all by himself. If that doesnโ€™t work, he should go to the caves and deserts.

If at the time of the Rambam, all of society was behaving improperly, I assume that the world did not improve since then. The Chazon Ish taught that today, the yeshivos are the โ€œdesertโ€ that the Rambam referred to, and the obligation to go out to the deserts and caves is fulfilled by going to a yeshiva, which has the power to influence a Yid to remain muvdal from the surrounding society.

This past summer I traveled to America, and before I left, I went to ask our rosh yeshiva what message I should impart to the talmidim of the yeshiva. He told me to speak about the importance of staying connected to the yeshiva and to a rebbi, as this is the only way to overcome the nisyonos and the challenges that we face today.

This quality of havdalah bein Yisrael laโ€™amim is crucial for bringing the geulah, and in the zechus of our strengthening that separation, by disconnecting ourselves from the outside world and connecting to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, we should all see the geulah speedily.

Gut Shabbos.
