Parshas Yisro

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita

Parshas Yisro is the parshah of Kabbalas HaTorah. As we know, from the Arizal and the Shelah, ื”ืงืจื™ืื” ืžืขื•ืจืจืช ืืช ื”ื–ืžืŸ โ€” what we lein in the parshah creates an auspicious time. We find ourselves, therefore, in a special moment for strengthening ourselves in limud haTorah and shemiras haTorah. So letโ€™s try to use this time to elevate ourselves together.

The Midrash says, at the beginning of Parshas Bereishis, that when Hashem wanted to create Adam, the malachim were opposed, arguing, ืžื” ืื ื•ืฉ ื›ื™ ืชื–ื›ืจื ื•. The Midrash records the dialogue Hashem had with the malachim at that point, and thereโ€™s a continuation to this exchange in the Gemara (Sanhedrin 38b). There, Chazal say that at the time of the dor hamabul and the dor haflagah, when people corrupted themselves through immorality and by building a tower to fight with Hashem โ€” a form of liberalism, as if declaring that we live our own life and are in charge of our own existence โ€” the malachim again argued, โ€œืœื ื™ืคื” ืืžืจื• ืจืืฉื•ื ื™ื ืœืคื ื™ืš โ€” did the earlier [malachim] not argue correctly that man shouldnโ€™t be created?โ€

Hakadosh Baruch Hu answered with a passuk fromYeshayah: ื•ืขื“ ื–ืงื ื” ืื ื™ ื”ื•ื ื•ืขื“ ืฉื™ื‘ื” ืื ื™ ืืกื‘ืœ.

What was the meaning of this answer?

The Maharsha(in Sanhedrin) explains that Hashem was telling the malachim to wait until Mattan Torah, when Hashem would appear to Klal Yisrael in the form of a zakein malei rachamim โ€” ื•ืขื“ ื–ืงื ื” ืื ื™ ื”ื•ื.

Indeed, Rashi at the beginning of the Aseres Hadibros teaches that when Hakadosh Baruch Hu revealed Himself at Har Sinai, He appeared as a zakein malei rachamim, filled with love for us. Due to His great love, He gave us the Torah. The Maharsha teaches that Hashem told the malachim, โ€œYouโ€™re right that human beings are flawed, but wait for the day of Mattan Torah.โ€

We humans are not perfect. But, Hashem was saying, wait for the day that I reveal Myself to them at Mattan Torah, because although they have a yetzer hara and they fall, barasi Torah tavlin โ€” I will give them the Torah, which is going to lift them up and make them so elevated that when you see them then youโ€™ll understand the purpose of creating man.

This is such a powerful lesson for all of us. Torah is what brings us to our shleimus; itโ€™s what propels us to our highest moments and enables us to become the greatest people we can be.

The Gemara (Shabbos 88) teaches that when Klal Yisrael said naaseh venishma, they received crowns. Now, the Gemara is emphasizing that they received the crowns even before they learned the Torah โ€” they had just resolved to learn and observe it. Furthermore, every Yid was mekabel the Torah at this point, even though itโ€™s obvious that not every Yid will become a gadol hador or learn eighteen hours a day. But every Yid has shaychus to the Torah. By declaring naaseh venishma, every Yid expressed that he has his own kesher to the Torah: โ€œI want to bring Torah into my life.โ€ And each one was zocheh to two beautiful crowns.

That teaches you that Torah brings every person to his personal pinnacle of greatness. And this is what we were created for.

Whoโ€™s the True Boss?

Dovid Hamelech says (Tehillim 19), ืชื•ืจืช ื”ืณ ืชืžื™ืžื” ืžืฉื™ื‘ืช ื ืคืฉ. The Meiri explains that just as there are ailments that afflict the body, there are ailments that afflict the soul as well โ€” ย but thereโ€™s no spiritual ailment that Hashemโ€™s Torah, which is ืชืžื™ืžื” ืžืฉื™ื‘ืช ื ืคืฉ, cannot heal.

Torah helps a person to rise above; it empowers us and gives us the strength to prevail over difficult nisyonos. We live in a generation whose nisyonos are similar to those of dor hamabul and dor haflagah and all the galuyos together โ€” the dor before Mashiach. The Torah is the tavlin, the antidote to these challenges, and it restores โ€” is meishiv โ€” us to our true greatness.

Dovid Hamelech continues, ืขื“ื•ืช ื”ืณ ื ืืžื ื” ืžื—ื›ื™ืžืช ืคืชื™ โ€” Torah opens our heart and our eyes to perceive a deeper meaning in life. One of the big nisyonos we face is defining our identity and understanding what makes us chashuv. Many people believe that their money, the way they dress, the name brands they own, their car, their house โ€” thatโ€™s who they are. But is that really what defines a person? What heโ€™s wearing? When he removes his clothing, heโ€™s someone else?

So many people who wear expensive clothing have terrible middos, and are entirely corrupt. You wouldnโ€™t want to have anything to do with them. So does clothing really show chashivus?

Yet we are living through a very lengthy galus that has had a tremendous effect on us. Thatโ€™s where ืขื“ื•ืช ื”ืณ ื ืืžื ื” ืžื—ื›ื™ืžืช ืคืชื™ comes in.

You know, some people wear a sweater that says โ€œBoss.โ€ And they feel like, โ€œOh, Iโ€™m the boss.โ€ And then there are some people whose clothing doesnโ€™t scream โ€œBoss,โ€ but their actions radiate that their neshamah is a tzelem Elokim, and the fingerprint of the real Boss is upon them. Theyโ€™re beautiful, special people, Torahโ€™dike people, holy people. They are so chashuv.

Through Yeshivas Mir, Iโ€™ve met many special baalebatim who have dedicated their lives to Torah โ€” to strengthening Torah, to learning more and in greater depth, and to help people and be there for anyone who needs them. Each one has earned himself a beautiful keser.

Some peopleโ€™s true chashivus isnโ€™t so apparent now, but those who have eyes to perceive the future recognize that their kavod will eventually come. Thereโ€™s going to be a time when these people will shine so brightly, because they really are the true tzelem Elokim.

These are the people who learn Torah and connect to Torah.

A bachur once asked, why donโ€™t the rebbeim prepare us for when we go into business? Many yeshivah bachurim are going to go into business, so why donโ€™t the yeshivos prepare them? Someone answered โ€” he had learned in Brisk, where Iโ€™m sure the talmidim were not being prepared to be businessmen โ€” that yeshivos connect us to Torah. When weโ€™re young, we build that beautiful connection to Torah. And when we stay connected, when we put in effort to learn Torah, when weโ€™re koveiโ€™a ittim laTorah โ€” every person on his level โ€” itโ€™s meshivas nefesh; we become different people. We then know ourselves how to handle ourselves even in the business world.

The Cure to the Midlife Crises

Torah is also ืžืฉืžื—ื™ ืœื‘, and when you learn it and connect with it, ืืฉืจื™ืš ื‘ืขื•ืœื ื”ื–ื” ื•ื˜ื•ื‘ ืœืš ืœืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ื โ€” because you have real values in life and you understand what youโ€™re here for, so you can accomplish your true goals.

People often go through mid-life crises, once their children are out of the house, theyโ€™ve reached middle age, and they realize that their dreams arenโ€™t coming to fruition.

Suddenly it hits them โ€” what am I doing? Whatโ€™s important about me?

Whatโ€™s important about a person is that he learns, he does mitzvos, he does chessed all the time. Heโ€™s doing the ratzon Hashem: naaseh venishma. Thatโ€™s the highest level of adam.

Iโ€™ve met people who have made it in the world, people who are successful businessmen, and their joy and fulfillment in life is the chessed they do, helping, encouraging, and uplifting people. These people create such a kiddush Hashem. The bnei Torah who dedicate their lives to avodas Hashem โ€” every one of them has a keser, even if heโ€™s not a big rosh yeshivah. Just the way heโ€™s living life crowns him with a beautiful keser.

Thatโ€™s the power of Torah. It opens our eyes โ€” ืžื—ื›ื™ืžืช ืคืชื™ โ€” to recognize whatโ€™s really important in life. We look at life differently when we connect to Torah.

How important it is to keep that connection to Torah! Itโ€™s beautiful that so many people listen to parshah shmuessen, and are koveia ittim during the day, even when itโ€™s hard for them to come and learn. And every word of Torah empowers; every sevarah of Torah lifts us up and places a crown on our heads.

These crowns were taken away after the eigel, but in the future weโ€™re going to be zocheh to those crowns again.

All the people who hold strong in galus and maintain a powerful connection to Torah โ€” Hakadosh Baruch Hu looks at every one of them and tells the malachim: โ€œFor these special people, these beautiful people, I created the world.โ€

The day will come when your chashivus will be revealed โ€” and that chashivus has nothing to do with the clothing you wear or the car you drive. Itโ€™s you โ€” who you are, your maโ€™asim, your middos โ€” that makes you special. Then the tov and the kavod will come, as we know that ืื™ืŸ ื˜ื•ื‘ ืืœื ืชื•ืจื” and ืื™ืŸ ื›ื‘ื•ื“ ืืœื ืชื•ืจื”.

We should be zocheh bโ€™karov to geulos and yeshuos, and to be elevated and uplifted through the Torah even more.
