Imagine if you had the ability to go back in time and experience the giving of the Torah many, many years ago. This is not simply an exercise in imagination; itโs a halachic requirement. The Gemara (Berachos 22) teaches that Torah learning requires kedushah, and must be done How do we know this? Because the Torah tells us, ืึฐืืึนืึทืขึฐืชึธึผื ืึฐืึธื ึถืืึธ ืึฐืึดืึฐื ึตื ืึธื ึถืืึธ ืืึนื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืขึธืึทืึฐืชึธึผ ืึดืคึฐื ึตื ื’ ืึฑืึนืงึถืืึธ ืึฐึผืึนืจึตื, and Chazal infer that just as the Torah was given amid fear and trembling, we have to learn Torah today in that manner as well, as though weโre standing at Har Sinai.
When the Torah tells us to give over to our children what happened at Har Sinai, this is just not as a remembrance, for the sake of history. The Torah is a Toras chaim, and the way it is supposed to be learned is with fear and trembling. The fright that one should have when learning Torah is real, and should grip the personโs very body.
This halachah is not directly only at a pashuteh Yid; itโs for everyone.
The Gemara (Yoma 4) records a machlokes regarding the purpose of the cloud that covered Har Sinai when Moshe Rabbeinu ascended to receive the Torah after the Aseres Hadibros were given. R’ Nassan said: ืื ืื ืืืชืื ืืื ืืืจืง ืืืืื ืืฉืชืื ืฉืืืขืื, the purpose was to remove the food and drink from his intestines. We can wonder what Moshe had eaten before the giving of the Torah that needed to be purged from him; he was eating the mann and drinking miraculous water from the beโer. Yet he still needed to be purified before ascending to Shamayim.
Now listen to the second opinion, that of R’ Masya ben Charash: ืื ืื ืืืชืื ืืื ืืืืื ืขืืื, the purpose was to make him scared. Moshe Rabbeinu was going up to receive the Luchos from Hakadosh Baruch Hu and see the Torah in its entirety, but in order to receive the Torah, he needed some preparation. What was that preparation? The cloud covered Har Sinai, to frighten him
We see, then, that even someone on the level of Moshe Rabbeinu โ who was zocheh to lead Klal Yisrael out of Mitzrayim and perform Krias Yam Suf, and acted as the go-between, as it were, between the Eibishter and Klal Yisrael for the Aseres Hadibros โ could not ascend Har Sinai without the preparation of ืืืืื ืืจืชืช ืืืืืข.
Two Sides of a Treaty
We are all familiar with the gevaldigeh tefillah of ืืจืื ืฉืืื, which we recite when the sefer Torah is removed from the aron kodesh. The source of the words of this tefillah is the Zohar, and it is worth reading some of the words of the Zohar that precede this passage:
When the sefer Torah is being brought to its place, you have to prepare yourself, by putting yourself in a mode of fear and trepidation, and you have to be mechaven that youโre standing at Har Sinai right now to receive the Torah. Your ears have to be completely given over to hear the Torah, and you are not allowed to open your mouth to speak even words of Torah, and certainly not other words.
So the point of ืึฐืืึนืึทืขึฐืชึธึผื ืึฐืึธื ึถืืึธ is not only that we should remember what happened at Har Sinai, but mainly that we should relive it. And reliving it is not simply an exercise in make believe, but truly reexperiencing Maamad Har Sinai.
The Pachad Yitzchak notes that the Luchos are called Luchos Habris, and wonders what kind of treaty this implies. A treaty is, by definition, two-sided, with each of the parties making a commitment to the other. What were the respective obligations of the two sides here?
He explains that on Klal Yisraelโs end, the bris was that we would transmit to our children the way Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave us the Torah โ ืึฐืืึนืึทืขึฐืชึธึผื ืึฐืึธื ึถืืึธ. This involves not merely relating what happened, but actually living it, and feeling as though we are now standing in front of Har Sinai. On the Ribbono Shel Olamโs end, His commitment was: ืึทืึฒื ึดื ืึนืืช ืึฐึผืจึดืืชึดื ืืึนืชึธื ืึธืึทืจ ื’ ืจืึผืึดื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืขึธืึถืืึธ ืึผืึฐืึธืจึทื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืฉึทืืึฐืชึดึผื ืึฐึผืคึดืืึธ ืึนื ืึธืืึผืฉืืึผ ืึดืคึดึผืืึธ ืึผืึดืคึดึผื ืึทืจึฐืขึฒืึธ โ the spirit that I gave you at Har Sinai will live on in our descendants, and never stop.
This is truly unbelievable. On our end, we are supposed to learn Torah as though weโre still at Har Sinai; when we hear Krias HaTorah in shul, we canโt even speak divrei Torah, but we have to remain quiet and listen as though we are now receiving the Torah. If we do that, learning the Torah Har Sinaiโdik, as though weโre standing in from of Hashem, then He promises to continue the giving of the Torah forever.
In Present Tense
The Vilna Gaon sees this idea reflected in the berachah of We give thanks to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for having chosen us, in the past tense, but then the berachah finishes in the present tense: ื ืึนืชึตื ืึทืชึผืึนืจึธื. Thatโs because Hakadosh Baruch continues the giving of the Torah forever, provided we see ourselves as standing by Har Sinai.
This requirement applies to everyone. Whether youโre a yungerman, a yeshiva bachur, or working to support your family and raise your children in the path of Torah and mitzvos, the tzurah of how we are supposed to learn Torah is the same. Torah is serious; it has to be learned If we want to be zocheh to Torah, and to the sweetness of Torah, we need to make the proper preparation. If Moshe Rabbeinu needed to be frightened before he received the Torah, then certainly we have to instill awe in ourselves before entering a beis midrash. Thereโs no place for idle chatter in a shul or beis midrash, and beyond the issur of sichas chullin, we need to be in the correct mindset: Weโre zocheh now to hear dvar Hashem!
This takes us back, in a time machine, to Har Sinai, and with that we will be zocheh to this unbelievable gift of the Torah Hakedoshah.
