Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shpitzer Shlita
A Residence for the Shechinah
Parashas Yisro
Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shpitzer
This is the parashah where we see beauty in the fact that Hashem gave the Torah to us. The Midrash gives a mashal to a king who had a one and only daughter. When she got married, and the kingโs new son-in-law wanted to take his wife back to where he lived, the king told him, โThis is my one and only daughter. For me to separate from her is impossible. On the other hand, I canโt tell you not to take her, since sheโs your wife. Rather, please do me a favor. Wherever you build yourself a home, make me a little room so that I can be near my daughter.โ
Similarly, when Hashem gave us the Torah โ His โone and only daughterโ โ he told us that he does not want to be separated from it, and therefore, He gave us the mitzvah to build a Mishkan: ืึฐืขึธืฉืืึผ ืึดื ืึดืงึฐืึธึผืฉื ืึฐืฉึธืืึทื ึฐืชึดึผื ืึฐึผืชืึนืึธื. The purpose of the Mishkan was for Hakadosh Baruch Huโs Shechinah to have a place to reside in this world, and the reason His Shechinah needed a place in this world is that once He gave the Torah, He doesnโt want to be separated from it.
Rashi comments that we are supposed to make a house of kedushah. What is Rashi conveying by interpreting mikdash as a โhouse of kedushahโ? The Maharal explains that we human beings donโt create the kedushah; we merely create a place thatโs worthy of housing Hashemโs Shechinah, and then Hakadosh Baruch Hu sends the kedushah.
The Shechinah rests in the Mishkan or Beis Hamikdash because it wants to be near the Torah. But what happened after the churban Beis Hamikdash, when the original house that was built for Hakadosh Baruch Hu no longer existed? Did Hashem no longer have a place to reside in this world? The Gemara, in Berachos, teaches that from then on, Hakadosh Baruch Hu resides only in the four amos of halachah.
Every place where Torah is learned becomes a โhouse of kedushah,โ where Hashemโs Shechinah can reside. If we learn Torah in our homes, then our homes become the four amos of halachah where Hakadosh Baruch Huโs Shechinah resides, so that it can be close to the Torah. So when we learn Torah, we are also bringing the Shechinah into the place where we are learning, turning it into a haven of kedushah.
Exceedingly Precious
The Gemara (Menachos 18a) teaches that Yosef Habavli, a talmid of R’ Elazar ben Shamua, once asked his rebbi the same question numerous times, until finally, the fifth time he asked, R’ Elazarย clarified the answer, and Yosef Habavli was delighted. When R’ Elazar saw his talmidโs delight at having understood his rebbiโs teaching perfectly, tears of joy streamed from his eyes, and he exclaimed, ืืฉืจืืื ืชืืืืื ืืืืื ืฉืืืจื ืชืืจื ืืืืืื ืขืืืื ืืืืชืจ! How fortunate are you, talmidei chachamim, that the words of Torah are so exceedingly precious to you! He then quoted the passuk,
Why did R’ Elazar use the description ืืืืืื ืขืืืื ืืืืชืจ โ exceedingly precious to you? Ben Yehoyada explains that every person has things that are precious to him, things that he likes and enjoys. But R’ Elazar ben Shamua saw that to this talmid, Yosef Habavli, however important other things in the world were, the words of Torah were even more important; they were the most valuable commodity of all. Seeing that prompted him to exclaim,
The Noda bโYehuda explains that when we learn Torah in such a way that Torah is the most important thing in our lives, then we create a โlittle roomโ where itโs possible for the highest level of Shechinah to reside. Then, our homes are suffused with kedushah. But if Torah learning is not the most important thing in our world, then we havenโt created the ืึฐืขึธืฉืืึผ ืึดื ืึดืงึฐืึธึผืฉื where Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants to be with his Torah.
If we are machshiv the Torah the way Hashem is machshiv it; if we understand that the Torah is Hashemโs one and only daughter and should be treated accordingly; if Torah becomes the most important thing in our lives; then our homes become the four amos of halachah and Hakadosh Baruch Huโs Shechinah enters.
A person might protest that this is relevant to gedolei olam, who are able to create in their own home a Beis Hamikdash shel mattah, through their Torah learning. But how can we simple people do that? How much Torah can we learn? How much Torah do we learn? How can we create such intense kedushah in our homes?
Do Your Best, Hashem Does the Rest
The Midrash (beginning of Koheles) relates the following story: R’ Chanina ben Dosa saw that the people of his town were bringing korbanos to Yerushalayim, and he was distressed that he could not afford to bring anything. He decided to go out to the desert, where he found a stone that he thought was worthy of being part of the Beis Hamikdash. He cleaned, chiseled, and shaped the stone to make it look beautiful, and resolved to bring it to Yerushalayim. He needed workers to transport the stone, though, and when he found a group of workers, the price they named โ five sela โ was more than he could afford. Instead, Hakadosh Baruch Hu sent five malachim who lifted R’ Chanina ben Dosa together with the stone and transported them to Yerushalayim. The malachim then disappeared, and R’ Chanina presented the stone as a gift to the Beis Hamikdash.
The Ponovezher Rav asked a question in the name of the Chofetz Chaim: R’ Chanina ben Dosa knew from the start that he had no money to pay workers; thatโs why he couldnโt afford to bring a korban. Why, then, did he exert himself to chisel and clean the stone, if he had no way of paying for it to be transported to Yerushalayim?
We see from here, he answered, that Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants us to do our maximum. If we do our utmost, then Hakadosh Baruch Hu will take care of the rest. Even if youโre miles away from the Beis Hamikdash, if you do your best, then Hakadosh Baruch Hu will bring malachim to give you a hand and transport you all the way to the Beis Hamikdash.
When we sit down to learn, we may feel that weโre not really on the madreigah to bring the kedushah down; weโre not really at the level that Hakadosh Baruch Hu should want to bring the Shechinah into our homes and shul. But if we do our maximum, treating the Torah as the only daughter of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, then we display this attitude of And if the words of Torah are exceedingly precious to us, then we have treated the Torah the way Hashem treats His only daughter, which He gave to us in this weekโs parashah. The Shechinah then comes into our homes and elevates them, turning them into a house of kedushah: ืึฐืขึธืฉืืึผ ืึดื ืึดืงึฐืึธึผืฉื. We create the bayis, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu Himself sends the kedushah.
May we be zocheh to exert ourselves to the maximum in our kabbalas haTorah, and then Hakadosh Baruch Hu will accept what we give to Him, and every one of our homes will become a house of kedushah, where Hashem resides.
