Harav Hagaon Yehuda Wagshal Shlita

When the Torah discusses the mitzvah of Shabbos in the Aseres Hadibros, it doesnโ€™t just mention the day of Shabbos itself; it also references the six days prior to Shabbos: ืฉืึตืฉืึถืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ืชึผึทืขึฒื‘ึนื“ ื•ึฐืขึธืฉื‚ึดื™ืชึธ ื›ึผึธืœ ืžึฐืœึทืื›ึฐืชึผึถืšึธ. ื•ึฐื™ื•ึนื ื”ึทืฉึผืึฐื‘ึดื™ืขึดื™ ืฉืึทื‘ึผึธืช ืœึทื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ

Why, the meforshim wonder, does the Torah have to tell us ืฉืึตืฉืึถืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ืชึผึทืขึฒื‘ึนื“? From the simple reading of the passuk, it seems that there is some level of mitzvah in the ืฉืึตืฉืึถืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ืชึผึทืขึฒื‘ึนื“. But the work that we do during the six days of the week would seem to be optional, not a mitzvah. So whatโ€™s the mitzvah of ืฉืึตืฉืึถืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ืชึผึทืขึฒื‘ึนื“?

Perhaps we could understand this according to the Chofetz Chaimโ€™s explanation of the Mishnah in Avos that says:ื•ืื ื‘ื˜ืœืช ืžืŸ ื”ืชื•ืจื” ื™ืฉ ืœืš ื‘ื˜ืœื™ื ื”ืจื‘ื” ื›ื ื’ื“ืš ื•ืื ืขืžืœืช ื‘ืชื•ืจื” ื™ืฉ ืœื• ืฉื›ืจ ื”ืจื‘ื” ืœื™ืชืŸ ืœืš. This Mishnah seems to imply that someone who wastes time from Torah study not only incurs the aveirah of bittul Torah, but is also guilty of many other types of bittul. Conversely, someone who is involved in Torah study earns sachar harbeh, vast reward that apparently encompasses more than the remuneration for his actual ameilus baTorah. What is the additional bittul and schar that the Mishnah is referring to?

The Chofetz Chaim answers with the following mashal. A person had some extra money to invest, so he decided to build a building with a few apartments and rent them out. The house itself, he figured, would cost, letโ€™s say, a hundred thousand dollars to build, and the apartments would bring in, say, twenty thousand dollars a year in rent. In five years, then, he would start to profit from his investment. Everything went as planned: he got his money together, he hired a builder, and the house went up. But right before it was time to start renting out the apartments, he did something crazy โ€“ he locked up the house, put boards on the windows, and left the property uninhabited.

What did this person lose? He definitely lost the twenty thousand dollars a year in rent he could have earned. But he lost much more than that, the Chofetz Chaim points out. He really lost the hundred thousand he invested as well. The purpose of the building was only to profit from the rent, and if there are not going to be any profits, then the principal itself was one big waste.

Similarly, says the Chofetz Chaim, a person is commanded to learn Torah and serve Hashem as much as he can. On the other hand, a person also has responsibilities โ€“ he has a family, and he needs to earn a living. During the time that heโ€™s working for parnassah and not learning, is he guilty of bittul Torah? It depends on where his life, his work, and his parnassah are heading. If everything he does revolves around Torah โ€“ meaning that although he doesnโ€™t always have time to learn, his main objective is to devote himself to Torah and avodas Hashem, as evidenced by the way he spends his vacations and extra time โ€“ then itโ€™s obvious that his main occupation is Torah and all of his other pursuits lead toward that and contribute to it. His parnassah is actually a form of hechsher mitzvah, enabling him to be able to serve Hakadosh Baruch Hu at the times when itโ€™s possible.

On the other hand, letโ€™s say a person is earning a living for the sake of earning a living, so that he can climb the corporate ladder and advance in gashmiyus. If thatโ€™s his whole goal, then all of his work becomes bittul Torah, because itโ€™s not leading him toward ruchniyus. This, says the Chofetz Chaim, is the meaning of the wordsื•ืื ื‘ื˜ืœืช ืžืŸ ื”ืชื•ืจื” ื™ืฉ ืœืš ื‘ื˜ืœื™ื ื”ืจื‘ื” ื›ื ื’ื“ืš .

The Day of Proof

A person may not be able to learn all the time, but he has Shabbos, he has Sunday, he has days off. If he uses that time wisely, for Torah and avodah, then he proves that all of his work leads up to that, and his work therefore is not bittul Torah. That is the meaning of:ื•ืื ืขืžืœืช ื‘ืชื•ืจื” ื™ืฉ ืœื• ืฉื›ืจ ื”ืจื‘ื” ืœื™ืชืŸ ืœืš โ€“ besides the schar of the actual Torah learning, he gets schar for the work itself, and that adds up to ืฉื›ืจ ื”ืจื‘ื”. His work is the investment that enables him to reap the profits of his ameilus baTorah, and in that sense is deserving of reward as well.

If, however, a person doesnโ€™t learn when has the opportunities, he demonstrates that all of his efforts to earn parnassah and fulfill his other responsibilities are headed in the direction of bittul. Not only is he guilty of bittul Torah when he fails to learn at times when he has no reason not to, he is also guilty of bittul Torah when he is busy with his other responsibilities. His work is not a hechsher for ameilus, itโ€™s a hechsher for bittul.

Perhaps this is what the Torah means when it says: During the week, weโ€™re busy with a lot of things, and it can be hard to connect with Hakadosh Baruch Hu through tefillah and ameilus baTorah. If the seventh day is ืฉืึทื‘ึผึธืช ืœึทื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ โ€“ a time when we close down everything else in our lives so that we can uplift ourselves and achieve closeness to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, then we also fulfill the mitzvah of ืฉืึตืฉืึถืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ืชึผึทืขึฒื‘ึนื“, and earn ืฉื›ืจ ื”ืจื‘ื” for that as well. But if a person doesnโ€™t use Shabbos and other times of break and vacation wisely, then he has ื‘ื˜ืœื™ื ื”ืจื‘ื” ื›ื ื’ื“ืš.

The Torah is teaching us that ืฉืึทื‘ึผึธืช ืœึทื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ is not just Shabbos itself โ€“ what we do on Shabbos transforms the nature of the entire week. Just as it would be unfortunate for a person to invest a large sum of money into a building and then lock it up rather than rent it out, thereby losing his profit as well as his principal, it would be similarly unfortunate for us to lose our investment of everything we do during the six days by failing to utilize Shabbos properly. We invest so much into earning a living and caring for our families, so letโ€™s make sure that all of it leads in the right direction, that of ื•ืื ืขืžืœืช ื‘ืชื•ืจื” ื™ืฉ ืœื• ืฉื›ืจ ื”ืจื‘ื” ืœื™ืชืŸ ืœืš.
