Harav Hagaon Meir Wahrsager Shlita

The Vibe of a Torah Home

Parashas Vayishlach

Harav Hagaon Meir Wahrsager shlita ย

In this parashah, Yaakov sends malachim to greet Eisav, and he isntructs them to give him this message: ืขึดื ืœึธื‘ึธืŸ ื’ึทึผืจึฐืชึดึผื™ ื•ึธืึตื—ึทืจ ืขึทื“ ืขึธืชึธึผื”. Rashi cites Chazalโ€™s interpretation of the word ื’ึทึผืจึฐืชึดึผื™ as an allusion to the Taryag mitzvos: ืขื ืœื‘ืŸ ื”ืจืฉืข ื’ืจืชื™ ื•ืชืจื™”ื’ ืžืฆื•ืช ืฉืžืจืชื™ ื•ืœื ืœืžื“ืชื™ ืžืžืขืฉื™ื• ื”ืจืขื™ื. โ€œI lived with Lavan,โ€ Yaakov was conveying to Eisav, โ€œyet I kept the 613 mitzvos, and didnโ€™t learn from his bad deeds.โ€

If Yaakov already said that he kept the 613 mitzvos, why did he have to add that he didnโ€™t learn from Lavanโ€™s bad deeds? If he kept the mitzvos, doesnโ€™t that mean he avoided doing aveiros?

Yaakovโ€™s two-part statement teaches us an important lesson. Yiddishkeit encompasses two areas: fulfilling the Taryag mitzvos, namely the obligations of the Shulchan Aruch, and living a Torah life. Even if you keep the 613 mitzvos, you need to ask yourself: Am I influenced by the bad deeds of Lavan and Eisav?

A person can keep all the mitzvos in a technical sense, following the letter of the law, but still be influenced by the ways of the non-Jews in the spirit of how he lives his life.

I would like to explore this idea and examine how it is specifically apropos to Yaakovโ€™s role in building Klal Yisrael.

Yaakov Builds a Home

Yaakov was the last of the Avos, the last layer of the foundation of the Jewish people. While his primary middah was emes, and he was the pillar of Torah, his mission was to build the family of Klal Yisrael: to establish the twelve shevatim, to achieve ืžื˜ืชื• ืฉืœื™ืžื”, and to create a home filled with children who were pure and imbued with Torah values.

The Midrash (end of Pesichta to Eichah Rabbah) describes how, in the future, all the Avos and Imahos will argue before Hashem that Klal Yisrael are worthy of redemption. Yaakovโ€™s argument will be that he suffered greatly to raise the family of Klal Yisrael, enduring tzaar gidul banim for most of his life.

Part of Yaakovโ€™s role, then, and the zechus he invoked to advocate on Klal Yisraelโ€™s behalf, was his effort to build the family of Klal Yisrael. The Gemara (Pesachim 88) notes that Avraham Avinu called the site of the Beis Hamikdash a har, Yitzchak called it a sadeh, and Yaakov called it a bayis. The final name, โ€œBeisโ€ Hamikdash, was named for Yaakovโ€™s bayis, which symbolized his bringing his relationship with Hashem into a house and building a Yiddishe home. That was Yaakovโ€™s avodah.

The second aspect Yaakov alluded to in his message to Eisav, that of not being influenced by Lavanโ€™s bad deeds, but rather living by the spirit of Torah, is particularly crucial when coming to build a home. In the beis midrash, we learn to keep the Taryag mitzvos. But the house is the place where we work to integrate the Torah into real life. And that transition can be challenging.

Some people are great at learning Torah in yeshiva, or in their study, but have a much harder time incorporating Torah in their day-to-day lives. Thatโ€™s the avodah of a bayis: to live a life of Torah, where the 613 mitzvos spill over into all areas of life.

The power of a Jewish home lies not only in the Taryag mitzvos that are kept there, but in the vibe and tone of the home. Parents can observe all the mitzvos meticulously, yet establish a spirit in the home that is antithetical to Torah values, because they are influenced by the surrounding society. Such a home wonโ€™t produce Torahโ€™dike people. It wonโ€™t produce Shivtei Kah.

Not learning from Lavanโ€™s bad deeds was particularly necessary for Yaakovโ€™s avodah of building a bayis โ€” and itโ€™s also one of the greatest challenges we face in galus.

The Hall, or the Hallway?

Letโ€™s consider two examples later in this parashah of how Yaakov ensured that the spirit of his home would be in line with Torah values.

When Yaakov finally meets Eisav, Eisav declares, โ€œYesh li rav, I have plenty.โ€ Yaakov replies, โ€œYesh li kol, I have everything.โ€ This represents a significant difference between the way a Yid views his earthly possessions and the way Eisav does. Eisav tries to amass as much as he can, to make as much noise and take up as much space as possible. His goal is to embrace this world, which he views as an end for itself. To him, itโ€™s not the prozdor, but the traklin.

Yaakov, however, sees what he has as sufficient for his needs: โ€œI have everything.โ€ He sees no reason to amass possessions; instead, he tries to use what he does have in the best way possible. When he left small vessels behind, he didnโ€™t go buy more, but went back to retrieve them.

The emphasis on amassing more and more stuff, and spending more and more money, is not a Jewish thing. The Jewish approach is that even a person who has money doesnโ€™t spend as much as he can afford. He refrains from upgrading his lifestyle not only because he doesnโ€™t want to cause jealousy, but because he understands that you canโ€™t live in two worlds simultaneously.

When the atmosphere of a home revolves around materialism, that becomes the ikar, and the Taryag mitzvos become the tafel, and they slowly erode. But when the Torah and mitzvos are the ikar, and everything else is a tafel, then ruchniyus becomes the prevailing vibe in the home, and thereโ€™s an effort to davka downgrade gashmiyus.

Are They โ€œOurโ€ Children?

Earlier in the parashah, when Yaakov meets Eisav, Eisav sees his huge camp and wonders, ืžึดื™ ืึตืœึถึผื” ืœึธึผืšึฐ, and Yaakov responds: ื”ึทื™ึฐืœึธื“ึดื™ื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื—ึธื ึทืŸ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ืึถืช ืขึทื‘ึฐื“ึถึผืšึธ. The Midrash (Tanna Dvei Eliyahu Zuta 19)notes that there was a subtext to this exchange. It was a continuation of the dialogue between Yaakov and Eisav regarding which world was primary, this one or the next. Eisav wanted Olam Hazeh, while Yaakov viewed Olam Hazeh as a corridor to get to Olam Haba, and he ceded the pleasures of this world to Eisav.

Now that Eisav saw Yaakovโ€™s family, he accused him of breaking the deal and taking Olam Hazeh for himself. He viewed children as possessions, part of a life centered around this world, in which your children and possessions are there to bring you honor and nachas.

โ€œYouโ€™re getting it wrong,โ€ Yaakov answered. โ€œThese are the children that Hashem gave me. Theyโ€™re not my chattel.โ€

The words ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื—ึธื ึทืŸ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื mean that these are the children that Hashem endowed me with โ€” Iโ€™m a custodian. I donโ€™t own my children, and they donโ€™t exist to bring me nachas or accolades. Theyโ€™re here so I can bring them up in the best way, for Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

This is another difference between Yaakovโ€™s outlook and Eisavโ€™s that relates to the spirit and vibe of a home. Do the parents feel that the children owe them this or that, or that they are entitled to nachas? Or do they feel that their children are there for us to raise and help, as part of our job spreading kevod Shamayim?

We see, then, that the idea of ื•ืœื ืœืžื“ืชื™ ืžืžืขืฉื™ื• ื”ืจืขื™ื is just as important as Taryag mitzvos, if not more important. This is one of the greatest challenges of our generation, and we need to focus on it more. If we want to build true Yiddishe homes, we must place a tremendous emphasis on the vibe and mood of the home, ensuring that it is permeated with Torah values.

We should all be zocheh, like Yaakov Avinu, to have ืžื˜ืชื• ืฉืœื™ืžื” and to raise Shivtei Kah.

Gut Shabbos.
