In answer to the question of why Hakadosh Baruch Hu didnโ€™t hold Yaakov back to daven at the site of the Beis Hamikdash, Rashi explains that it doesnโ€™t work that way. Yaakov had to go all the way to Charan, where he realized with dismay that he had neglected to daven in the makom hamikdash, where Avraham and Yitzchak had davened, and then the place of Har Hamoriah came to him and he was able to daven.

We can take hisorerus from a discrepancy in the terminology Rashi uses. When describing how Yaakov passed the makom hamikdash Rashi says, ืื™ื”ื• ืœื ื™ื”ื™ื‘ ืœื‘ื™ื” ืœื”ืชืคืœืœ โ€” he did not set his heart to daven. At this point, it was about the lev; had Yaakov Avinuโ€™s heart spurred him to daven, that would have been enough for him to be zocheh to daven there, as we know that ื”ื‘ื ืœื˜ื”ืจ ืžืกื™ื™ืขื™ืŸ ืื•ืชื•. But since his heart didnโ€™t prompt him to daven there, he didnโ€™t have siyatta dโ€™Shmaya to do so, since min haShamayim they did not hold him back.

Subsequently, however, when describing how Yaakov realized that he had missed this opportunity to daven, the lashon Rashi uses isื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” ืœืžื”ื“ืจ ย โ€” he set his mind to return. A decision involving daas is a much more monumental that one involving just the lev. Once he had missed the opportunity, the little hisorerus from the lev that would have sufficed initially was no longer enough. Now that he was already far away from Har Hamoriah, it took much more to regain the opportunity to daven; it required ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื”, not just the lev.

This idea has far-reaching implications for us as well. At times, a person has an opportunity to grow in ruchniyus โ€” perhaps thereโ€™s a shiur right there โ€” but he lacks the ื™ื”ื™ื‘ ืœื‘ื™ื”. If his heart doesnโ€™t spur him to seize the opportunity, min hashamayim they will not spoon-feed him. Once he misses the opportunity, itโ€™s not entirely gone, but going back to it takes much more resolve; there has to be a ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” ืœืžื”ื“ืจ.

If, however, the person does set his mind to reclaim the opportunity to grow, a remarkable thing can happen: He can merit kefitzas haderech. Once Yaakov set his mind to return, he had incredible siyatta dโ€™Shmaya.

Two Types of Kefitzas Haderech

There are actually two types of kefitzas haderech. The regular kefitzas haderech is when the person arrives at his destination in less time. Here, however, the kefitzas haderech was different, as Rashi says, and the Ramban elaborates: the place came to Yaakov. He didnโ€™t have to travel all the way there. Once Yaakov set his mind to return โ€” ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” ืœืžื”ื“ืจ โ€” the opportunity came to him on a silver platter, and he merited a siyatta dโ€™Shmaya that was greater than what he would have been zocheh to originally, had he davened when he was passing the makom hamikdash.

Rabbosai, when we learn this Rashi, we typically think that it would have been easier if Yaakov had davened at Har Hamoriah on his way to Charan, because regaining that opportunity was complicated afterwards. But the Chiddushei Harim offers a fascinating insight to the contrary. He explains that had Yaakov Avinu davened at Har Hamoriah on his way to Charan, it would not have been the same type of tefillah, and he might not have been zocheh to the dream with the malachim that he ultimately experienced in that place. Sure, he would have had siyatta dโ€™Shmaya, but not to the same extent as when he set his mind to return.

After Yaakov felt that he had missed an opportunity, and decided that he wanted it back, his tefillah reached an entirely different level.

We see from here that a missed opportunity can actually lead to an even greater opportunity. The point is not that even though you missed the opportunity, you can still reclaim it, and itโ€™s never too late; rather, the chiddush is that missing the opportunity can create an even greater opportunity.

When you choose to seize the opportunity you previously missed, that ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” allows you to connect to the opportunity in a profound way that you could not have connected to the first time.

Indeed, we often see that late starters โ€” be it baalei teshuvah, or others who didnโ€™t connect to learning or ruchniyus early on โ€” are zocheh to unbelievable kefitzas haderech. Some of the top bachurim and avreichim in yeshivah have been learning for only five or six years, but they had the ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” to propel them to great heights despite their late start.

This possibility of ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” is accessible to all of us, and can enable us to reach places that perhaps once upon a time we had the opportunity to attain but we didnโ€™t. When thereโ€™s a ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื” later on, we can merit a phenomenal kefitzas haderech and enjoy a new opportunity to reach a place that we could not have arrived at earlier.

You Move the Malachim

What was Yaakov zocheh to when he decided to go back and daven at Har Hamoriah? He experienced the dream with malachim going up and down. The Nefesh Hachaim explains that what was revealed to Yaakov was that the Shechinah was right there; ืžึทืœึฐืึฒื›ึตื™ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ืขึนืœึดื™ื ื•ึฐื™ึนืจึฐื“ึดื™ื ื‘ึผื•ึน means that they were in him. in other words, a personโ€™s actions are the force that controls the entire universe. Whatโ€™s going on up in Shamayim is not the determinant; itโ€™s what the person is doing. He pulls the strings of the malachim and sets Hashgachah pratis in motion.

R’ Shimshon Raphael Hirsch explains that the revelation Yaakov experienced here was that ikar Shechinah bโ€™tachtonim โ€” this lowly world is the primary abode of the Shechinah. He adds that this idea sheds light on the halachah that when a person davens, he is supposed to direct his heart heavenward and his eyes downward: ืœื‘ื• ืœืžืขืœื” ื•ืขื™ื ื™ื• ืœืžื˜ื”. We might think that the reason his eyes should be directed downward is out of humility, but R’ Hirsch explains that if the person is looking upward, he shows that he believes the Shechinah is far away, up in the heavens โ€” but really, the Shechinah is right there! When youโ€™re davening, you are standing before Hashem and bringing the Shechinah right where you are. Thatโ€™s why your eyes should be downward.

At this point, Yaakov was going into galus, alone and penniless, having been robbed of all his money by Elifaz. He was leaving the beis midrash of Shem vโ€™Ever and the tent of Yitzchak and traveling to the house of Lavan. Seemingly, he was departing a place of kedushah and heading to a dark place.

Yet at precisely this juncture, the Eibishter revealed to him that the Shechinah rests on him, and his maasim will determine where the malachim go and what they do.

The Sfas Emes, citing a Midrash, observes that this was one of the darkest times in Yaakov Avinuโ€™s life. The mountains were caving in on him, as it were, prompting him to daven, ืึถืฉึธึผื‚ื ืขึตื™ื ึทื™ ืึถืœ ื”ึถื”ึธืจึดื™ื. This teaches, says the Sfas Emes, that in the darkest places, where tremendous tumah lurks, the greatest light can be uncovered.

All it takes to get out of that morass is the ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื”, the decision to seize the opportunity.

The kabbalah is always the hardest part of the growth process, however, because when a person resolves to fix something in himself he wonders whether heโ€™ll actually be able to follow through on that resolution. But the secret is that once you make the decision, then the kefitzas haderech happens. You just need the ื™ื”ื‘ ื“ืขืชื™ื”, and you donโ€™t have to think about what will happen afterwards, because once you make that commitment, you will merit tremendous siyatta dโ€™Shmaya.

Gut Shabbos.
