Katz, Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Shlita

Merit Your Malachim

Parashas Vayeitzei

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita

In this weekโ€™s parashah, Yaakov โ€” the bechir haโ€™avos โ€” experiences a unique revelation: ื•ึทื™ึทึผื—ึฒืœึนื ื•ึฐื”ึดื ึตึผื” ืกึปืœึธึผื ืžึปืฆึธึผื‘ ืึทืจึฐืฆึธื” ื•ึฐืจึนืืฉืื•ึน ืžึทื’ึดึผื™ืขึท ื”ึทืฉึธึผืืžึธื™ึฐืžึธื”. The meforshim note that this was an apt description of Yaakov himself: Although he was a human being whose feet were planted on the ground, his head reached the heavens.

Yaakov merited to see malachim climbing up and down the ladder, and some meforshim explain that these malachim, which brought him protection and brachah, were created from his mitzvos.

Yaakov was traveling to find a shidduch, so that he could build a family, and along the way, he experienced this incredible revelation: that the malachim created by his mitzvos were ascending to Shamayim and bringing him siyatta dโ€™Shmaya, accompanying him to help him and protect him. And it was not only malachim โ€” he saw ื•ึฐื”ึดื ึตึผื” ื”’ ื ึดืฆึธึผื‘ ืขึธืœึธื™ื•. And Hashem promised Him:

Yet the Torah doesnโ€™t tell us clearly why Yaakov merited this incredible revelation and protection. We would all love to be zocheh to that. How was he zocheh?

The Torah gives us two hints. Before describing Yaakovโ€™s dream, the Torah says: ื•ึทื™ึดึผืฉึฐืื›ึทึผื‘ ื‘ึทึผืžึธึผืงื•ึนื ื”ึทื”ื•ึผื. Rashi notes that this wording is limiting: He slept in that place, but during the fourteen years when he learned in the beis midrash of Shem and Ever he did not sleep at night. Why, asks Rav Ruderman, doesnโ€™t the Torah inform us explicitly that Yaakov was learning Torah? Why is this conveyed only in a hint?

The answer is that Yaakov hid himself in the beis midrash. And because he hid himself in the beis midrash, this information is hidden in the Torah as well.

There are people who sit quietly in the beis midrash and learn, without any fanfare or tumult. No one knows about them. But the Torah is telling us that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is watching them and their limud Torah.

Feel the Assistance

So, you might think, what does Yaakovโ€™s learning for fourteen years straight have to do with me?

Consider what happened next: Yaakov headed on to build his life. He went to work watching Lavanโ€™s sheep, and although he certainly continued learning even then, his Torah wasnโ€™t on the same level as it was in the beis midrash. Yet the Torah he learned stayed with him for life, watching over him and helping him. Those days and years that he spent in the beis midrash conferred protection on him even afterwards.

Every year, and every day, that we learn Torah โ€” sitting quietly in the beis midrash โ€” those moments become the ืกึปืœึธึผื ืžึปืฆึธึผื‘ ืึทืจึฐืฆึธื” ื•ึฐืจึนืืฉืื•ึน ืžึทื’ึดึผื™ืขึท ื”ึทืฉึธึผืืžึธื™ึฐืžึธื” of our lives. The malachim that we send up to the heavens come down to watch over us, too.

Maaseh avos siman labanim โ€” from Yaakov Avinu we learn how to be zocheh to the shemirah and brachah that he enjoyed. We all have difficult tests in life, whether in our own shidduchim, our childrenโ€™s shidduchim, parnassah, or anything else. Who wouldnโ€™t want to hear the brachah of ื•ึฐื”ึดื ึตึผื” ืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ืขึดืžึธึผืšึฐ ื•ึผืฉึฐืืžึทืจึฐืชึดึผื™ืšึธ ื‘ึฐึผื›ึนืœ ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืชึตึผืœึตืšึฐ? That comes from investing in Torah, because Kudsha Brich Hu vโ€™Oraysa chad hu. When you invest in Torah, you connect with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, so He is with you wherever you go, helping you.

Some people actually have siyatta dโ€™Shmaya, but they donโ€™t notice it; they donโ€™t feel it. Instead, theyโ€™re nervous and worried. Yaakov Avinu was zocheh to a revelation โ€” he saw the siyatta dโ€™Shmaya with his own eyes, and he felt it. Torah does that, too.

Seeing the Emes

Mattan Torah began with the letter alef, in the word Anochi of the Aseres Hadibros. That was Torah Shebichsav. The Mishnah starts with the letter mem (ืžืื™ืžืชื™) while the Gemara starts with a tav (ืชื ื). The sefarim hakedoshim note that those three letters spell emes, hinting that the words of Torah are emes.

When a person learns Torah, that connects him to emes. Heโ€™s able to see the world with an emesโ€™dike outlook. The gates of heaven are open before him, and he sees that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is with him. He is not afraid. He sees the brachos from Shamayim, and he lives life with a different perspective, a different set of priorities. He knows whatโ€™s important; he knows that life is a ladder extending from the ground to the heavens. He sees very clearly where heโ€™s heading: upward.

Thatโ€™s what Torah does for a person: It enables him to see how important it is to move upward. And through that, he merits protection and brachah from Hashem.

The opening words of the parashah are a powerful chizuk for us regarding the importance of maintaining our connection to Torah, through kevias itim laTorah, and listening to shiurim and shmuessin. That gives us the ladder to help us go up in life, and it also brings down the brachah and the shemirah from Hashem, through the malachim who descend the ladder.

After Yaakov experienced his revelation, the passuk says, ื•ึทื™ึดึผืฉึธึผื‚ื ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ ืจึทื’ึฐืœึธื™ื• โ€” implying that he was excited to go, and his feet carried him, because he knew Hashem was with him in everything.

This is one lesson we learn from Yaakov Avinu. Obviously, this idea related to him on his lofty level, and we have to apply it to ourselves on our level, in our generation. We canโ€™t copy Yaakov Avinu, but on our level, every bit of Torah that we connect to affects us, placing us on the ladder upward, and bringing us protection and blessing.

Retaining Connection

The second hint in the Torah to why Yaakov merited this revelation is found in Rashiโ€™s comment on the words ืึตื™ืŸ ื–ึถื” ื›ึดึผื™ ืึดื ื‘ึตึผื™ืช ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ื•ึฐื–ึถื” ืฉึทืืขึทืจ ื”ึทืฉึธึผืืžึธื™ึดื. Rashi cites the Gemaraโ€™s statement in Chullin that Yaakov actually passed the site of the Beis Hamikdash, and then said, โ€œHow could I have passed that place and not have davened there?โ€ He then returned to daven in that location, and Hashem granted him kefitzas haderech, bringing the place to him.

This teaches us that itโ€™s never too late. Thereโ€™s no justification for saying, โ€œOh, I missed it already.โ€

Grab what you can, now! The Torah tells us to make the right choice today: ืจึฐืึตื” ืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื ึนืชึตืŸ ืœึดืคึฐื ึตื™ื›ึถื ื”ึทื™ึผื•ึนื ื‘ึฐึผืจึธื›ึธื” ื•ึผืงึฐืœึธืœึธื”. Put your kochos into your Torah learning, and into your davening, today! Yaakov went back and davened to Hashem, and the gates of Heaven opened for him. He โ€œmetโ€ Hashem: ื•ึทื™ึดึผืคึฐื’ึทึผืข ื‘ึทึผืžึธึผืงื•ึนื.

Youโ€™re davening anyway โ€” if you put thought into your davening, you can turn your tefillah into a different experience, one of ื•ึทื™ึดึผืคึฐื’ึทึผืข ื‘ึทึผืžึธึผืงื•ึนื โ€” a meeting with Hashem. You can feel the siyatta dโ€™Shmaya on a different level. Whether your requests are answered or not, you accomplished something. You met with the Melech Malchei Hamelachim.

Yaakov had this vision at night, as he was heading into galus. Similarly, even though the galus that weโ€™re in is so dark, and itโ€™s so hard to see Hashem and feel the siyatta dโ€™Shmaya, when a person makes the effort to grow and connect to Hashem, then even in the darkest night you can โ€œmeetโ€ Hashem. There will be kefitzas haderech โ€” the Beis Hamikdash will come to you, in your place.

Yaakov Avinu describes this place as ืึตื™ืŸ ื–ึถื” ื›ึดึผื™ ืึดื ื‘ึตึผื™ืช ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื โ€” a bayis. A bayis, a home, is where we feel the connection to our family, where we feel secure. Yaakovโ€™s life was filled with tzaros, but what gave him chizuk was his bayis โ€” the beis haknesses and the beis midrash, his connection to tefillah and Torah. Thatโ€™s what empowered him to always go forward, ื•ึทื™ึดึผืฉึธึผื‚ื ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ ืจึทื’ึฐืœึธื™ื•, enduring the hardest nisyonos and yet keeping on moving upward to build a beautiful mishpachah, the family of Klal Yisrael. And indeed, he merited unbelievable children and grandchildren โ€” us.

We all have this power in us. Hashem should help us to know where our home is, and to connect with Him wherever we are, so that we can always move upward and be zocheh to abundant brachah and siyatta dโ€™Shmaya.
