When Hashem appeared to Avimelech and rebuked him for taking Sarah, Avimelech argued back, ื”ึฒื’ื•ึนื™ ื’ึผึทื ืฆึทื“ึผึดื™ืง ืชึผึทื”ึฒืจึนื’ โ€“ I did nothing wrong! Why are You saying that Iโ€™m going to die?

Hashemโ€™s response was: ื•ึฐืขึทืชึผึธื” ื”ึธืฉืึตื‘ ืึตืฉืึถืช ื”ึธืึดื™ืฉื ื›ึผึดื™ ื ึธื‘ึดื™ื ื”ื•ึผื โ€“ now, you must give Sarah back, because Avraham is a navi. The Gemara asks (Bava Kamma 92, Makkos 9): Did Avimelech need to give Sarah back only because she was married to a navi? Why is it relevant that Avraham was a navi?

The Gemara explains that Avimelech claimed that he was innocent, because he had no way of knowing that Sarah was married, and therefore he had done nothing wrong and didnโ€™t deserve to be killed. Hashem answered him by stressing that Avraham Avinu is a tzaddik, someone from whom Avimelech should have learned derech eretz, as Rashi and the Ritva say. Avraham Avinuโ€™s example should have taught Avimelech how to treat a person who comes to town, and to first inquire about the person and make sure you know whoโ€™s who and whatโ€™s what before you do anything. If Avimelech didnโ€™t avail himself of this lesson that he could have learned from Avraham Avinu, then he deserves to be killed.

This is the way gedolei Yisrael teach us throughout the ages. Besides the lessons that we learn directly, from their shiurim, thereโ€™s also the example that these tzaddikim set for us, which we have to learn from. The Gemara says that even a non-Jew like Avimelech deserves to be killed because he had the opportunity to learn from a tzaddik and failed to do so.

If this is the way the tzaddik is meant to influence us, then this is also the way we must attempt to influence our children. The passuk says:ื•ึฐืœึดืžึผึทื“ึฐืชึผึถื ืึนืชึธื ืึถืช ื‘ึผึฐื ึตื™ื›ึถื ืœึฐื“ึทื‘ึผึตืจ ื‘ึผึธื ื‘ึผึฐืฉืึดื‘ึฐืชึผึฐืšึธ ื‘ึผึฐื‘ึตื™ืชึถืšึธ , and Rโ€™ Shimon Shkop wonders why the passuk shifts from telling us, โ€œTeach your childrenโ€ to telling us โ€œwhen you sit in your house.โ€ He answers that if the child sees the father learning when heโ€™s in his house, that itself serves as an example, one that will prompt the child to want to learn himself.

The Gemara teaches (Bava Basra 24) that there was a lot of Torah emanating from Yerushalayim, as the passuk says: ื›ึผึดื™ ืžึดืฆึผึดื™ึผื•ึนืŸ ืชึผึตืฆึตื ืชื•ึนืจึธื” ื•ึผื“ึฐื‘ึทืจ ื”’ ืžึดื™ืจื•ึผืฉืึธืœึธึดื. Tosafos asks, how did the Torah of Yerushalayim emanate to the entire Klal Yisrael? Tosafos answers that when Yidden came to Yerushalayim to be oleh regel three times a year, they witnessed and were impressed by the kedushah, by the avodah of the korbanos, and this gave them chizuk that enabled them to learn Torah even when they left Yerushalayim.

The people of Yerushalayim influenced the world even without uttering a word, simply by virtue of their actions, which were seen by others. The Chasam Sofer in Bava Basra notes that this is the way to teach Torah throughout the ages. Besides what we learn in a shiur, if weโ€™re zocheh to see other people learning, and to observe the way our parents and rebbeim learn, then this will impress us, and filter through to our children and the next generation, bringing about positive results. This, says the Chasam Sofer, is why the words: ื•ึฐื”ึธื™ื•ึผ ื”ึทื“ึผึฐื‘ึธืจึดื™ื ื”ึธืึตืœึผึถื” ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ืžึฐืฆึทื•ึผึฐืšึธ ื”ึทื™ึผื•ึนื ืขึทืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ are followed by the words:ื•ึฐืฉืึดื ึผึทื ึฐืชึผึธื ืœึฐื‘ึธื ึถื™ืšึธ . If a father sits and learns Torah himself, that will have the automatic effect of teaching his children as well.

The Dubno Maggid cites the Vilna Gaonโ€™s teaching that the best way to influence others to learn Torah is not to push them, but rather to learn yourself, and to learn so much that it spills over naturally to the people around you.

We have the zechus to welcome, this coming week bโ€™ezras Hashem, 200 chashuveh yungerleit from all over the world who will be mechazek us by joining us here in Yerushalayim for the Yarchei Kallah of the Mir Yeshiva. We should be zocheh to learn together, and in this way, Torah will emanate from the Mir Yeshiva and from Yerushalayim: ื›ึผึดื™ ืžึดืฆึผึดื™ึผื•ึนืŸ ืชึผึตืฆึตื ืชื•ึนืจึธื” ื•ึผื“ึฐื‘ึทืจ ื”’ ืžึดื™ืจื•ึผืฉืึธืœึธึดื.

Live It, Donโ€™t Preach It

In the haftarah of Parashas Nasso, we read the story of Manoach and his wife, who received detailed instructions from the malach regarding the halachos of nezirus that would apply to their son Shimshon from birth. After the malach appeared to Manoachโ€™s wife, Manoach begged that the malach should return. When the malach came back, he simply repeated the instructions, concluding with the words: ื›ึผึนืœ ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืฆึดื•ึผึดื™ืชึดื™ื”ึธ ืชึผึดืฉืึฐืžึนืจ. The meforshim ask, what new insight did the malach offer when he came to them the second time? Why did Manoach want the malach to come back?

Rโ€™ Shimon Schwab explains that Manoach and his wife understood the instructions that applied to Shimshon, but Manoach couldnโ€™t understand how it was possible to raise his son as a nazir and teach him to follow all the halachos of what heโ€™s not allowed to drink, eat, and touch if Manoach and his wife, Shimshonโ€™s parents, are not following those halachos themselves. The malach answered that they were right to be concerned. The Meshech Chochmah explains that the malach meant, โ€œEverything I instructed you regarding Shimshon, you should be careful with yourselves, and in this way you will be able to be mechanech your son Shimshon as well.โ€

The Ramban wrote his famous letter, Iggeres HaRamban, after he parted from his family. Before he left Spain, we donโ€™t find that he instructed his son and his talmidim regarding all the mussar in his letter. It must be, then, that as long as the Ramban was there, he served as a shining example of everything he later wrote in his letter. The people around him didnโ€™t need to hear his mussar or see these instructions written. Only when he left, and the people no longer had him as a constant reminder of what to aspire to and strive toward, did he write down these instructions. Until then, the very existence of the Ramban was the ultimate mussar.

Similarly, in the Haggadah shel Pesach we say: The meforshim note that the way to fulfill ื•ึฐื”ึดื’ึผึทื“ึฐืชึผึธ ืœึฐื‘ึดื ึฐืšึธ ย and be mechanech children is: ื‘ึผึฐืฉืึธืขึธื” ืฉืึถื™ึตืฉื ืžึทืฆึผึธื” ื•ึผืžึธืจื•ึนืจ ืžึปื ึผึธื—ึดื™ื ืœึฐืคึธื ึถื™ืšึธ โ€“ when the father himself has the matzah and marror in front of him. When the father demonstrates in his own life that he lives up to the ideals that he expects of his children, then he will be successful in his lifeโ€™s goal and mission of ื•ึฐื”ึดื’ึผึทื“ึฐืชึผึธ ืœึฐื‘ึดื ึฐืšึธ. Such a father will manage to transmit to his son and to future generations that which is important to him.

May we be zocheh to learn from our rebbeim and the talmidei chachamim among us, and to give over to our children through personal example.
