Parshas Vayechi

Harav Hagaon Meir Wahrsager shlita

This parshah discusses the end of Yaakov Avinuโ€™s life, when he gave berachos to his sons and to the sons of Yosef, Menashe and Ephraim. To Menashe and Ephraim he gave the famous berachah, ื‘ึฐึผืšึธ ื™ึฐื‘ึธืจึตืšึฐ ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ืจึธืึตืœ ืœึตืืžึนืจ ื™ึฐืฉึดื‚ืžึฐืšึธ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ื›ึฐึผืึถืคึฐืจึทื™ึดื ื•ึฐื›ึดืžึฐื ึทืฉึถึผืื” โ€” that all of Klal Yisraelโ€™s future generations should bentch their children to be like Ephraim and Menashe.

The basic question everyone asks is that out of all the many great people in Klal Yisraelโ€™s history โ€” the Avos, the shevatim, Moshe, Aharon, Yosef, and Dovid โ€” why are Ephraim and Menashe singled out? What is so special about them that they are held up as the role models all future children in Klal Yisrael should be like?

One of the many explanations is offered by the Ponevezher Rav, who notes that Ephraim and Menashe were unique in that they did not experience yeridas hadoros.

A person can have wonderful children, the best kids, but generally, no one escapes the phenomenon of yeridas hadoros. Each new generation of children is a lower generation, further away from the Avos, further away from Har Sinai, and thatโ€™s a reality that Hakadosh Baruch Hu ingrained in the world. As great as any particular generation may be, they are not as great as the previous generation.

Ephraim and Menashe were an anomaly; they were upgraded to the level of shevatim, as Yaakov Avinu says: ื›ึดึผืจึฐืื•ึผื‘ึตืŸ ื•ึฐืฉึดืืžึฐืขื•ึนืŸ ื™ึดื”ึฐื™ื•ึผ ืœึดื™. They even received portions in Eretz Yisrael!

So the berachah we wish to give our children is that they shouldnโ€™t experience yeridas hadoros.

I was once zocheh once to hear this vort from Rav Tzvi Partzovitz shlita at a shalom zachor, and he said he wanted to be a shomeiโ€™a uโ€™mosif. What, he asked, was Yosef Hatzaddikโ€™s secret that enabled him to have children who were not subject to yeridas hadoros? Perhaps if we can understand the secret of Yosef Hatzaddik, we will also be zocheh to have children like Ephraim and Menashe.

Rav Tzvi noted that a major aspect of Yosefโ€™s greatness was that he continued Yaakovโ€™s path; Yaakov was an eish, he was a lehavah. He maintained a vision of Yaakovโ€™s image โ€” ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• ืฉืœ ืื‘ื™ื• โ€”in his mind, and he sought to perpetuate that legacy.

Most parents, Rav Tzvi said, give their children their own chinuch. But their chinuch is a generation lower than that of their parents, so their children receive a yeridas hadoros form of chinuch. Yosef, however, was giving over the chinuch of Yaakov. And since Menashe and Ephraim received the chinuch of Yaakov, they remained on the level of all the other shevatim.

When Rav Tzvi said this vort at the shalom zachor, Rav Yitzchok Hellman shlita (zuhl zein gezunt) stood up and gave a standing haskamah. It was a beautiful explanation of the koach of Yosef Hatzaddik to be able to raise Menashe and Ephraim in a way that they did not experience yeridas hadoros.

With Hashemโ€™s help, I would also like to be a shomeia uโ€™mosif and add an explanation of how Yosef was able to give over the chinuch of the previous generations, which isnโ€™t so simple.

Emulating, Not Imitating

When Yosef named his firstborn son Menashe, the reason he gave for this name was Menashe comes from the lashon of forgetting, and he was thanking Hashem for helping him to forget all the travails he endured โ€” and to forget his fatherโ€™s house. He forgot what it was like growing up in Yaakovโ€™s house, in that place of kedushah and taharah, in that makom Torah.

Clearly, Yosef considered it a positive development that Hashem helped him to forget his fatherโ€™s house, if he gave his son a name that reflected this. But how do we reconcile that with the idea that he kept ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• ืฉืœ ืื‘ื™ื• in his consciousness?

On one hand, Yosef saw himself as a continuation of Yaakov, and he certainly knew that we donโ€™t consider later generations to be greater than earlier ones. On the contrary, the closer you are to the Avos, the greater you are. Our task is to continue the mesorah transmitted by our parents and rebbeim.

On the other hand, Yosef was in a new land. He wasnโ€™t living in the rarefied atmosphere of his fatherโ€™s house, but in Mitzrayim, which was very far away and very different. Apparently, the meaning of the words ื›ึดึผื™ ื ึทืฉึทึผืื ึดื™ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ืึถืช ื›ึธึผืœ ืขึฒืžึธืœึดื™ ื•ึฐืึตืช ื›ึธึผืœ ื‘ึตึผื™ืช ืึธื‘ึดื™ is that if Yosef would have had a vivid picture in his mind of his fatherโ€™s house, which is perhaps what he would have wanted, he would have felt compelled to imitate, to practically cut and paste, what he had seen there. But that wouldnโ€™t have worked in Mitzrayim, simply because Mitzrayim was not the house of Yaakov.

Hakadosh Baruch Hu helped Yosef to forget the exact picture of his fatherโ€™s house, which meant that he had to work to recapture and conjure up his connection to beis avi while he was in Mitzrayim. In other words, he had to use his own avodah to try to remember what he had seen in his fatherโ€™s house and bring that into Mitzrayim.

Although Yosef did see ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• ืฉืœ ืื‘ื™ื•, a careful look at Chazalโ€™s words reveals that he did not enter the nisayon in Potipharโ€™s house with that image in mind. In the beginning he did not conjure up that image. In fact, Chazal say, he was ready to sin; he hadnโ€™t come armed with ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• ืฉืœ ืื‘ื™ื•. He had to work with his own avodah of ื•ึทื™ึฐืžึธืึตืŸ โ€” he pushed himself to withstand the nisayon, and through his own avodah he was able to bring back ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• ืฉืœ ืื‘ื™ื•. In conjuring up that image, he wasnโ€™t copying it; he was transplanting it into Mitzrayim. This is the tremendous balance that Yosef Hatzaddik had to strike.

Iโ€™d like to suggest that this is what he did in his chinuch as well. Returning to the original vort about Yosefโ€™s chinuch, yes, itโ€™s true that Yosef was zocheh to have children on the level of Menashe and Ephraim because he transmitted the chinuch of Yaakov. But it wasnโ€™t cut and paste; he didnโ€™t copy exactly what Yaakov had done in his holy house. The words ื ึทืฉึทึผืื ึดื™ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ืึถืช ื›ึธึผืœ ืขึฒืžึธืœึดื™ ื•ึฐืึตืช ื›ึธึผืœ ื‘ึตึผื™ืช ืึธื‘ึดื™ convey that he didnโ€™t have the exact picture of beis avi in his mind. But what he did do was take the fundamentals and apply them to his children, who were being raised in Mitzrayim. When raising children in that environment, he couldnโ€™t imitate exactly what he had seen growing up in Yaakovโ€™s house, but he took the main principles.

He didnโ€™t say, โ€œWell, itโ€™s a new generation, this is Mitzrayim, so let me forget everything and not try to bring over the mesorah I received from my father.โ€ Rather, he strove to continue Yaakovโ€™s mesorah as much as possible. But his chinuch couldnโ€™t be an imitation. He had to take the fundamentals and apply them, perhaps using a different formula in conveying them.

Yosef, through his own avodah, took the ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• โ€” what he received from the preceding generations โ€” and found the right way to present it to his children. This is the balance that we have to strike in our chinuch as well. Either extreme is incorrect.

Those who think we canโ€™t use the old ideas and fundamentals of the mesorah are certainly wrong; these foundations are sacred, and we dare not abandon them. Indeed, we are taught that the words ืึถืฉึธึผื‚ื ืขึตื™ื ึทื™ ืึถืœ ื”ึถื”ึธืจึดื™ื can be read as ืึถืฉึธึผื‚ื ืขึตื™ื ึทื™ ืึถืœ ื”ึถื”ื•ึนืจึดื™ื, conveying that we must always look back to our parents, grandparents, and rebbeim and strive to emulate them. There must always be an inner desire to capture the fundamentals imparted by the earlier generations.

But we have to balance that with the realities of today. Thereโ€™s no way we could convey the mesorah exactly as it was transmitted then; itโ€™s a different generation. But if we somehow manage to adapt the mesorah to todayโ€™s generation, we can tap into the tremendous ability that Yosef HaTzadik possessed โ€” to blend the two elements, one on hand forgetting his fatherโ€™s house and on the other hand bringing the ื“ืžื•ืช ื“ื™ื•ืงื ื• into a new place and a new generation, and be zocheh to have children who are like Ephraim and Menashe.

Gut Shabbos.
