Accepting the Darkness Brings on the Light

Parashas Vayechi

Harav Hagaon Elimelech Reznik

On the words ื•ึทื™ึฐื—ึดื™ ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘, Rashi asks: ืœืžื” ืคืจืฉื” ื–ื• ืกืชื•ืžื” โ€“ why is this parashah closed? In other words, why doesnโ€™t this parashah have the usual space preceding it? Rashi offers two answers, the second of which is: ืฉื‘ืงืฉ ืœื’ืœื•ืช ืืช ื”ืงืฅ ืœื‘ื ื™ื• ื•ื ืกืชื ืžืžื ื• โ€“ Yaakov Avinu wanted to reveal to his sons when the galus would end, but it was hidden from him. Rashi is referring to the incident later in the parashah where Yaakov tells his sons:ื”ึตืึธืกึฐืคื•ึผ ื•ึฐืึทื’ึผึดื™ื“ึธื” ืœึธื›ึถื ืึตืช ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ื™ึดืงึฐืจึธื ืึถืชึฐื›ึถื ื‘ึผึฐืึทื—ึฒืจึดื™ืช ื”ึทื™ึผึธืžึดื™ื; there, Rashi comments similarly:ื‘ืงืฉ ืœื’ืœื•ืช ืืช ื”ืงืฅ ื•ื ืกืชืœืงื” ืฉื›ื™ื ื” ืžืžื ื• ื•ื”ืชื—ื™ืœ ืื•ืžืจ ื“ื‘ืจื™ื ืื—ืจื™ื.

Rashiโ€™s words are based on the Gemaraโ€™s teaching (Pesachim 56a) that Yaakov Avinu wanted to reveal to his sons the time of the geulah, but the Shechinah departed from him. โ€œPerhaps one of my sons is flawed, like Avraham, who had a son Yishmael, and Yitzchak, who had a son Eisav?โ€ he wondered.

His sons responded with a unanimous declaration of kabbalas ol malchus Shomayim: ืฉืึฐืžึทืข ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึตื™ื ื•ึผ ื”’ ืึถื—ึธื“.

This account ย raises several questions. Why did Yaakov Avinu want to tell his sons when the geulah would happen? And if he considered it worth telling, why did the Shechinah depart from him and block him from doing so? Furthermore, just because one detail was hidden from Yaakov Avinu, why does that make the entire parashah โ€œstumahโ€?

No Time for Contemplation

I would like to suggest the following explanation, based on the words of the Tzlach on the above Gemara.

Yaakov Avinu knew that his familyโ€™s descent to Mitzrayim was the start of Galus Mitzrayim, with all the tzaros it would entail for Klal Yisrael, and he thought that the only way Klal Yisrael would survive these nisyonos is if they would know when the redemption would occur. He wanted to reveal to Klal Yisrael the reason for ืฆื“ื™ืง ื•ืจืข ืœื• and ืจืฉืข ื•ื˜ื•ื‘ ืœื•, so that they should understand why they would experience tzaros and what they would accomplish through their suffering.

By way of illustration, if a person is told that he is going to suffer tremendous pain and embarrassment for a certain period of time, but then, afterward, heโ€™s going to become the king, it will be difficult for him to endure the period of suffering, but heโ€™ll be able to weather it because heโ€™ll know that this is whatโ€™s going to bring him to the position of king.

Knowing how terrible the suffering of Klal Yisrael in galus would be, Yaakov Avinu wanted to reveal to them the time of the geulah and show them how each aspect of the galus was necessary to bring about the ultimate redemption, because otherwise they would not be able to survive the enslavement and the gezeiros.

Just when he was about to reveal the time of the redemption, however, the Shechinah departed from him. Why? Because Hakadosh Baruch Hu was telling Yaakov Avinu that not only would Klal Yisrael be able to survive the galus without this information, but the aspect of hester is actually whatโ€™s going to bring the geulah.

The difficulty of galus is not only the nisyonos and tzaros we face, but also the many questions we have about whatโ€™s happening. We donโ€™t know why we suffer; we donโ€™t know the reason for the tzaros. And that lack of knowledge is part and parcel of the galus.

The Sfas Emes says that when we have emunah amid the darkness and hester panim, when we believe that everything Hashem does is for the good, when we get up every day and say, ืื ื™ ืžืืžื™ืŸ ื‘ืืžื•ื ื” ืฉืœืžื” ื‘ื‘ื™ืืช ื”ืžืฉื™ื— โ€“ thatโ€™s what brings the geulah.

Yaakov Avinu thought this level of hester was unnecessary; he thought he could reveal when the galus would end. But Hakadosh Baruch Hu knew otherwise. Galus had to be a time of pure hester, so that Klal Yisrael could bring the geulah through their avodah.

We asked why the whole parashah is โ€œstumahโ€ just because the keitz was hidden from Yaakov Avinu. The answer is that just as there are parshiyos of geulah in the Torah, thereโ€™s also a parashah of galus โ€“ and this is it. Other parashiyos have space before them, the space signifying the ability to think and contemplate between each parashah, as Rashi teaches elsewhere. But in galus, there is no understanding; everything is closed and hidden. And since Parashas Vayechi is the parashah of galus, in which Hakadosh Baruch Hu taught Yaakov Avinu what galus is all about by removing His Shechinah from him, the entire parashah is stumah, with no spaces to contemplate and understand why each aspect of the galus is happening.

The Gift of Hindsight

Iโ€™d like to mention a fantastic vort brought down in the hakdamah to the sefer Kol Aryeh, written by a talmid of the Chasam Sofer. When Yaakov Avinu was going down to Mitzrayim, Hakadosh Baruch Hu told him not to be afraid, and promised him thatื•ึฐื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ ื™ึธืฉืึดื™ืช ื™ึธื“ื•ึน ืขึทืœ ืขึตื™ื ึถื™ืšึธ. The Zohar teaches that this passuk contains the secret of Krias Shema. Although we canโ€™t fathom the depth of this sod, the Kol Aryeh gives some insight into what this means. Of all Yaakov Avinuโ€™s tzaros, the worst was not knowing what happened to Yosef and mourning him for 22 years. The loss of one of the shevatim was not just a tragedy for Yaakov, but also a breach in the very fabric of Klal Yisrael. When Yaakov heard that Yosef was still alive, he realized that everything had been for the good: Hakadosh Baruch Hu had sent Yosef down to Mitzrayim because there was going to be a famine, and the very survival of Klal Yisrael was dependent on Yosefโ€™s being a viceroy in Mitzrayim. Furthermore, Yosefโ€™s withstanding the nisyonos of arayos that he faced created a kedushah that Klal Yisrael lived off when they were in Mitzrayim.

The Torah is teaching a vital lesson here: that even during years of tzaros and darkness, a person shouldnโ€™t have questions, because everything is being done for him and worked out for his ultimate hatzalah.

When we recite Krias Shema, we cover our eyes and declare that the Name ื™-ืง-ื•-ืง, signifying the Middas Harachamim, and the Name ืืœืงื™ื, signifying the Middas Hadin, are echad, one. Everything comes from the same Eibishter. But this unity is not revealed to us right now, and things donโ€™t always make sense to us โ€“ which is why we close our eyes, as if to say, โ€œWe donโ€™t know how this makes sense, but we do know that Hashem is echad and that everything He does is for the good.โ€

This is the lesson we learn from Yosef โ€“ the lesson of covering our eyes as weโ€™re mekabel ol malchus Shomayim, which is alluded to in the passuk: ื•ึฐื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ ื™ึธืฉืึดื™ืช ื™ึธื“ื•ึน ืขึทืœ ืขึตื™ื ึถื™ืšึธ. Thatโ€™s the secret of Krias Shema. We have to take this lesson with us through the galus, covering our eyes and saying, โ€œWe donโ€™t understand, but we accept everything from Hashem with love and total emunah.โ€

The Kol Aryeh goes on to cite a teaching from his rebbi, the Chasam Sofer. In Parashas Ki Sisa, Moshe Rabbeinu asks Hakadosh Baruch Hu: ื”ึทืจึฐืึตื ึดื™ ื ึธื ืึถืช ื›ึผึฐื‘ึนื“ึถืšึธ, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu answers him: ื•ึฐืจึธืึดื™ืชึธ ืึถืช ืึฒื—ึนืจึธื™ ื•ึผืคึธื ึทื™ ืœึนื ื™ึตืจึธืื•ึผ. What does it mean that Moshe was able to see Hashemโ€™s โ€œbackโ€ but not His โ€œfaceโ€?

The Chasam Sofer explains that often, when things happen in the world, we have no way of understanding them at the time. Later, however โ€“ sometimes much later โ€“ we can look back at something we thought was terrible and see how everything worked out for the good. Hakadosh Baruch Hu opens the curtain a little bit to let us see, in hindsight, the yad Hashem. This was His gift to Moshe Rabbeinu: in response to Mosheโ€™s request of ื”ึทืจึฐืึตื ึดื™ ื ึธื ืึถืช ื›ึผึฐื‘ึนื“ึถืšึธ, Hashem allowed us to understand a bit of His ways after the fact โ€“ ืึฒื—ึนืจึธื™ โ€“ even in Olam Hazeh.

Even so, however, galus is primarily a time of darkness.

Iโ€™d like to conclude with a thought from the Ohr Gedalyahu, which states that the greater the light, the more it has to be hidden. A parashah stumah comes to hide something โ€“ which means that in the parashah of galus, thereโ€™s a tremendous light that the Torah has to hide, kaveyachol. That light gives Yidden through all the generations the power of emunah, and in the heart of every Yid is the ability to have perfect emunah and withstand all the nisyonos that come their way.

Gut Shabbos.
