Brotherly Love

Parashas Vayechi

Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shpitzer Shlita

Many of us bentch our children on Friday night, while others do so on Erev Yom Kippur, but we all use the immortal words of Yaakov Avinu in his wonderful brachah that our children should grow up to be like Ephraim and Menashe: ื™ึฐืฉื‚ึดืžึฐืšึธ ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื ื›ึผึฐืึถืคึฐืจึทื™ึดื ื•ึฐื›ึดืžึฐื ึทืฉึผืึถื”.

Before saying this brachah, Yaakov placed his hands on the heads of Ephraim and Menashe. When Yosef saw that Yaakovโ€™s right hand was on Ephraimโ€™s head, he tried to switch his fatherโ€™s hands, but Yaakov insisted that his hands remain that way. โ€œKnow that Iโ€™ve switched my hands intentionally,โ€ he said, โ€œbecause even though Menashe is older, Ephraim is going to be greater.โ€

The Agra dโ€™Kallah, by the author of the Bnei Yissaschar, explains that Ephraim and Menashe displayed incredible feelings of love and affection for each other. Menashe realized that his grandfather was giving the better brachah to his younger brother; had we been in that situation, we would surely have complained. Ephraim, whom Yaakov chose to receive the better brachah, saw his father getting involved and trying to take that brachah away from him; had we been in Ephraimโ€™s position we would have told our father, โ€œIf my grandfather decided to give me the better brachah, Iโ€™m going to take it, and please donโ€™t get involved.โ€ But neither Menashe nor Ephraim said a word โ€“ and they knew the value of a brachah from Yaakov Avinu, who was the one who fought to get a brachah from his own father.

When Yaakov Avinu saw the wonderful middos of Ephraim and Menashe, who were happy if their brother received the better brachah, he bentched them โ€“ and all of us โ€“ to be like them. When we bentch our children with these words, we are asking that Hakadosh Baruch Hu help our children become like Ephraim and Menashe and possess brotherly love that will allow them to be happy for each other in every situation and encourage one another to succeed.

Later in the parashah Yaakov Avinu admonishes Shimon and Levi by saying: ืฉืึดืžึฐืขื•ึนืŸ ื•ึฐืœึตื•ึดื™ ืึทื—ึดื™ื ื›ึผึฐืœึตื™ ื—ึธืžึธืก ืžึฐื›ึตืจึนืชึตื™ื”ึถื. Why does the passuk here describe them as brothers?

The Midrash explains that the introductory words ืฉืึดืžึฐืขื•ึนืŸ ื•ึฐืœึตื•ึดื™ ืึทื—ึดื™ื are actually part of Yaakovโ€™s rebuke. Yaakov was telling Shimon and Levi, โ€œWhen it came to the incident with Dina, you knew what it meant to be brothers, you risked your life for your sister.โ€ Indeed, Rashi says theyโ€™re called โ€œachei Dinaโ€ because they endangered their lives in order to save her. โ€œWhy, then,โ€ Yaakov continued, โ€œdid you not display those feelings of brotherhood toward Yosef, whom you sold?โ€

Yosef, in contrast, did display those feelings of brotherliness. In last weekโ€™s parashah, he told his brothers: ืึฒื ึดื™ ื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ ืึฒื—ึดื™ื›ึถื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืžึฐื›ึทืจึฐืชึผึถื ืึนืชึดื™ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึธื™ึฐืžึธื”. We know that Yosef is the one the brothers sold to Mitzrayim, so why mention this again? The Ohr Hachaim explains that Yosef was emphasizing, โ€œI am Yosef your brother โ€“ I feel to you as a brother does, and I yearn to be kind to you.โ€ Furthermore, Yosef was telling them that even at the time that they sold him to Mitzrayim, he still felt like their brother. They were being unkind to him, but he nevertheless wanted to be kind to them. โ€œThatโ€™s why,โ€ Yosef continued, โ€œnow that Iโ€™m the ruler in Mitzrayim and youโ€™re going through difficult times, I want to help you and take care of your families.โ€

A Brother is Always Kind

The Torah commands us: ืœึนื ืชึฐืชึทืขึตื‘ ืึฒื“ึนืžึดื™ ื›ึผึดื™ ืึธื—ึดื™ืšึธ ื”ื•ึผื ย โ€“ do not despise or hurt an Edomite, because he is your brother. The Malbim points out that Edom is very worthy of being despised and antagonized. But the Torah expects us to act kindly to a brother even if he acts unkindly to us, just as Yosef displayed love to his brothers even though they sold him.

The true definition of a brother is someone who will always be kind to his brother, even if his brother wasnโ€™t kind to him.

In Shir Hashirim Shlomo Hamelech speaks to Hashem in the name of Klal Yisrael, which says to Hakadosh Baruch Hu: ืžึดื™ ื™ึดืชึผึถื ึฐืšึธ ื›ึผึฐืึธื— ืœึดื™, we wish that Your relationship with us would be like that of a brother. The meforshim explain that a brother is expected to be kind and helpful even if his sibling wasnโ€™t good to him. โ€œItโ€™s true that we might not have behaved properly,โ€ we say to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. โ€œWe might have done aveiros. But we want You to repay our bad deeds with kindness, just as Yosef did.โ€

The Yalkut in Shoftim teaches the principle that Eisavโ€™s descendants fall only before the descendants of Rochel. Why do the children of Rochel have the power to prevail over Eisav?

All of the other shevatim were lacking in their feelings of brotherly love, and therefore, they cannot triumph over Eisav. But the children of Rochel, who did not participate in selling their brother, but on the contrary, displayed the incredible love of ืึฒื ึดื™ ื™ื•ึนืกึตืฃ ืึฒื—ึดื™ื›ึถื โ€“ they will bring the geulah.

The navi Yirmiyahu says: ื‘ึผึธืขึตืช ื”ึทื”ึดื™ื ื ึฐืึปื ื”’ ืึถื”ึฐื™ึถื” ืœึตืืœึนืงึดื™ื ืœึฐื›ึนืœ ืžึดืฉืึฐืคึผึฐื—ื•ึนืช ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ. โ€œIn those days,โ€ says Hashem, referring to the time when Moshiach will come, โ€œI will be the God of all the families of Klal Yisrael.โ€ The passuk specifically mentions the families of Klal Yisrael because the geulah will come not to those people who stand as individuals, but rather to those who stand together in families. Even if a family member wasnโ€™t kind or helpful to us, being part of a family means being like Yosef and repaying evil with good. Therefore, even if somebody was unkind to me, I have to go out of my way to be kind to him. The willingness to sacrifice on behalf of our family members โ€“ as we see in this parashah with Ephraim and Menashe โ€“ is what creates a family, and it is the families of Klal Yisrael that will merit the geulah.

This is the brachah that we give to our children: that they should grow up to feel for one another and put themselves out for one another. May we be zocheh that our relationship with one another will be that of ืžึดืฉืึฐืคึผึฐื—ื•ึนืช ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ, and that our relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu be that of ืžึดื™ ื™ึดืชึผึถื ึฐืšึธ ื›ึผึฐืึธื— ืœึดื™, so that we merit to see the fulfillment of: ื‘ึผึธืขึตืช ื”ึทื”ึดื™ื ื ึฐืึปื ื”’ ืึถื”ึฐื™ึถื” ืœึตืืœึนืงึดื™ื ืœึฐื›ึนืœ ืžึดืฉืึฐืคึผึฐื—ื•ึนืช ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ.
