The Power of Purim

Purim

Harav Hagaon Moshe Aharon Friedman Shlita

The Mishnah says, in Maseches Megillah: ื”ืงื•ืจื ืืช ื”ืžื’ืœื” ืœืžืคืจืข ืœื ื™ืฆื. This can be interpreted, bโ€™derech drash, to mean that if someone thinks that the Megillah is just a historical account of ancient events, he is not fulfilled his obligation. We have to realize that the message of the Megillah has enduring relevance, even in our time.

The Rambam writes (Hilchos Megillah 2:18):

The Megillah concludes by saying: ื•ึฐื›ึธืœ ืžึทืขึฒืฉึตื‚ื” ืชึธืงึฐืคึผื•ึน ื•ึผื’ึฐื‘ื•ึผืจึธืชื•ึน ื•ึผืคึธืจึธืฉึทืืช ื’ึฐึผื“ึปืœึทึผืช ืžึธืจึฐื“ึณึผื›ึทื™ ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื’ึดึผื“ึฐึผืœื•ึน ื”ึทืžึถึผืœึถืšึฐ ื”ึฒืœื•ึนื ื”ึตื ื›ึฐึผืชื•ึผื‘ึดื™ื ืขึทืœ ืกึตืคึถืจ ื“ึดึผื‘ึฐืจึตื™ ื”ึทื™ึธึผืžึดื™ื ืœึฐืžึทืœึฐื›ึตื™ ืžึธื“ึทื™ ื•ึผืคึธืจึธืก, and R’ Yechezkel Abramsky explained that for the purpose of historical recordkeeping, we donโ€™t need the Megillah; we can go back to the archives of the Persian empire for that. Rather, the Megillah carries a fundamental message for us.

The opening words of the Megillah โ€” ื•ึทื™ึฐื”ึดื™ ื‘ึดึผื™ืžึตื™ ืึฒื—ึทืฉึฐืื•ึตืจื•ึนืฉื โ€” have the gematria of 914, which is equal to the gematria of the first Mishnah of Maseches Megillah: ืžึฐื’ึดืœึธึผื” ื ึดืงึฐืจึตืืช ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื‘ ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื’ ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื“ ื‘ึฐึผื˜”ื•. What is the significance of that?

The sefarim cite a Midrash that says that Achashverosh represents Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€” the name โ€œAchashveroshโ€ signifying ืฉื”ืื—ืจื™ืช ื•ื”ืจืืฉื™ืช ืฉืœื•. This is an interesting description of Hashem โ€” the King who controls the end and the beginning. The beginning comes before the end, so why is the end mentioned first?

In Reverse Order

On Purim, we experience a ื•ึฐื ึทื”ึฒืคื•ึนืšึฐ ื”ื•ึผื, going from the bottom to the top, as alluded to in the above Mishnah: ืžึฐื’ึดืœึธึผื” ื ึดืงึฐืจึตืืช ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื‘ ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื’ ื‘ึฐึผื™”ื“ ื‘ึฐึผื˜”ื•. Who reads the Megillah on the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth of Adar? The bnei hakefarim, the distant people, the ones who are not that connected. On the fourteenth, the people in the arei haperazim (unwalled cities) read the Megillah. And then, on the fifteenth โ€” which is the highest level โ€” the Megillah is read in the arim hamukafim (walled cities). These people are the last on the list, which goes in ascending order of prominence. On Purim, we gather all the Yidden โ€” ืœึตืšึฐ ื›ึฐึผื ื•ึนืก ืึถืช ื›ึธึผืœ ื”ึทื™ึฐึผื”ื•ึผื“ึดื™ื โ€” and everyone comes and gets connected. And the reason is that Haman took an ืขึตืฅ ื’ึธึผื‘ึนื”ึทึผ ื—ึฒืžึดืฉึดึผืื™ื ืึทืžึธึผื”, representing his desire to drag the Yidden into the fiftieth shaar of tumah. We know that in Mitzrayim, the Yidden were on the forty-ninth level of tumah, and Hashem had to take them out so that they wouldnโ€™t fall into the fiftieth level, at which point it would have been impossible for them to survive. Haman wanted to bring the Yidden to that abyss of tumah.

Mordechai is the polar opposite of that. The letters of Mordechaiโ€™s name can be rearranged to spell ื“ืจืš ืžื™, and the gematria of ืžื™ is 50, implying that Mordechaiโ€™s derech led to the fiftieth shaar of kedushah.

Fifty is the number of Yovel, the year when everyone goes free. Even the eved nirtza, who declares that he wishes to remain a slave, and about whom the Torah says ื•ึทืขึฒื‘ึธื“ื•ึน ืœึฐืขึนืœึธื, is freed when Yovel arrives. Yovel represents the highest level, then, the time when everyone is freed. And that is also represented by Purim and the Megillah, which happened at the end of Galus Bavel โ€” it was the time when everyone could leave that galus.

Hashem in the Megillah

Although the Name of Hakadosh Baruch Hu does not appear in the Megillah, the first and last words of the Megillah hint to the Name ืฉ-ื“-ื™, as the gematria of ื•ื™ื”ื™, the first word in the Megillah, is 31, and the gematria of ื–ืจืขื•, the last word in the Megillah is 283, for a total of 314, which is the gematria of ืฉ-ื“-ื™. So the Name ืฉ-ื“-ื™, which is essentially a Name that relates to nature, is alluded to in the Megillah.

Throughout the Megillah, the term โ€œHamelechโ€ is used to refer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, but the Shem Havayah is not mentioned. Yet even the Shem Havayah does not describe Hashemโ€™s essence. Thereโ€™s actually a level even beyond Havayah: ืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ. This level is called ืขื“ ื“ืœื ื™ื“ืข โ€” itโ€™s the kutzo shel yud, the keser thatโ€™s above everything.

Yet even that is alluded to in the Megillah.

Megillas Esther is the only sefer of Tanach in which the word keser appears. Megillah is the keser โ€” itโ€™s ื•ึฐืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื”ึทืกึฐืชึตึผืจ ืึทืกึฐืชึดึผื™ืจ ืคึธึผื ึทื™ ื‘ึทึผื™ึผื•ึนื ื”ึทื”ื•ึผื. It goes beyond Havayah. Every Yid has a letter in the sefer Torah, but even a person whoโ€™s so disconnected that he doesnโ€™t connect to any of those letters connects to Megillas Esther. Everyone is connected by Megillas Esther.

The Gemara in Chullin asks, ืืกืชืจ ืžืŸ ื”ืชื•ืจื” ืžื ื™ืŸ, and it answers with this passuk, ื•ึฐืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื”ึทืกึฐืชึตึผืจ ืึทืกึฐืชึดึผื™ืจ ืคึธึผื ึทื™ ื‘ึทึผื™ึผื•ึนื ื”ึทื”ื•ึผื. Who said these words and when did he say it? It was Moshe Rabbeinu, on the last day of his life. In Vezos Habrachah, when he spoke to the Yidden, his last words were ื•ึฐืึทืชึธึผื” ืขึทืœ ื‘ึธึผืžื•ึนืชึตื™ืžื•ึน ืชึดื“ึฐืจึนืšึฐ, which allude to Mordechaiโ€™s standing on Haman. Earlier, in Parashas Vayelech, he says,

As we said, Haman wanted to drag the Yidden to the fiftieth shaar hatumah, while Mordechai brings them to the fiftieth shaar hakedushah. No one can actually reach the fiftieth shaar hakedushah โ€” even Moshe Rabbeinu was described as: ื•ึทืชึฐึผื—ึทืกึฐึผืจึตื”ื•ึผ ืžึฐึผืขึทื˜ ืžึตืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื. Yet the sefarim say that on the day when Moshe Rabbeinu was niftar, Zayin Adar, he did reach that level. The Chasam Sofer points out that the name Har Nevo also alludes to this, for ื ื‘ื• can be read ื ’ ื‘ื•โ€” on that day he reached the level of nun. And on that day, he said ื•ึฐืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื”ึทืกึฐืชึตึผืจ ืึทืกึฐืชึดึผื™ืจ ืคึธึผื ึทื™ ื‘ึทึผื™ึผื•ึนื ื”ึทื”ื•ึผื, and also ื•ึฐืึทืชึธึผื” ืขึทืœ ื‘ึธึผืžื•ึนืชึตื™ืžื•ึน ืชึดื“ึฐืจึนืšึฐ, conveying that eventually everyone โ€” even those who are living in hester panim โ€” will eventually get out. And that will happen through the highest level, the level of keser.

Hiding the Crown

I heard a beautiful mashal that sheds light on the uniqueness of Purim. On Purim, everything is hidden and camouflaged โ€” we get dressed up, and the pnimiyus is concealed behind an outward appearance that is very different. Imagine that a king would want to transport his crown. For that, he would not use a Brinks truck. You would use a Brinks truck for ten million dollars, but not for the kingโ€™s irreplaceable crown. How, then, do you transport it? You hide it in some unassuming jalopy. This way, no one is aware of the valuable cargo, and no one can damage it.

We know that Purim and Yom Kippur (โ€œKiPurimโ€) are connected. At the end of Parashas Tetzaveh, when the Torah discusses the mizbeiโ€™ach haketores, the passuk says, ื•ึฐื›ึดืคึถึผืจ ืึทื”ึฒืจึนืŸ ืขึทืœ ืงึทืจึฐื ึนืชึธื™ื• ืึทื—ึทืช ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื” ืžึดื“ึทึผื ื—ึทื˜ึทึผืืช ื”ึทื›ึดึผืคึปึผืจึดื™ื ืึทื—ึทืช ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื” ื™ึฐื›ึทืคึตึผืจ ืขึธืœึธื™ื• ืœึฐื“ึนืจึนืชึตื™ื›ึถื ืงึนื“ึถืฉื ืงึธื“ึธืฉึดืื™ื ื”ื•ึผื ืœึทื”’. The sefarim note that the passuk repeats the phrase ืึทื—ึทืช ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื”, and they interpret the double mention of this phrase as correlating to the ืึทื—ึทืช ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื” of Purim and the ืึทื—ึทืช ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื” of Yom Kippur.

Five Days of No Satan

The Gemara (Yoma 21) states that the gematria of ื”ืฉื˜ืŸ is 364, corresponding to the 364 days of the solar year when the Satan is able to prosecute. The one day of the year when the Satan is silenced is Yom Kippur. Why, ask the mefarshim, is the prefix hei appended to the Satanโ€™s name? Furthermore, โ€œSatanโ€ alone has the gematria of 359, so which are the five days represented by the hei? Some say that the hei corresponds to the five days between Yom Kippur and Sukkos, but perhaps we can suggest that it corresponds to the five days of Purim, as per the Mishnahโ€™s statement above that the Megillah is read on the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of Adar. These five days also carry some element of Yom Kippur.

Taking this a step further, on Yom Kippur we recite Al Cheit and slowly, painstakingly, try to reawaken our relationship with Hashem detail by detail. Yet at times, with a burst of hislahavus, a person can break down the whole wall at once. On Purim, we can accomplish ื•ึผื‘ึฐื›ึตืŸ ืึธื‘ื•ึนื ืึถืœ ื”ึทืžึถึผืœึถืšึฐ all at once instead of the gradual process of ื•ึผื‘ึฐื›ึตืŸ ืชึตึผืŸ ืคึทึผื—ึฐื“ึฐึผืšึธ, ื•ึผื‘ึฐื›ึตืŸ ืชึตึผืŸ ื›ึธึผื‘ื•ึนื“, ื•ึผื‘ึฐื›ึตืŸ ืฆึทื“ึดึผื™ืงึดื™ื. We want to come back to the Ribbono Shel Olam!

Interestingly, the letters of the name โ€œVashtiโ€ can be rearranged to spell ื™ืฉื•ืช, and this name represents the nations of the world. Achashverosh โ€” the King, Hakadosh Baruch Hu, calls to Vashti to come, but she refuses. The nations donโ€™t want to come. Yet Klal Yisrael, represented by Esther โ€” ื•ึฐืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื”ึทืกึฐืชึตึผืจ ืึทืกึฐืชึดึผื™ืจ โ€” approach the King even when he hasnโ€™t asked for her. She wants to go to him, to connect with him, even without his authorization. Thatโ€™s what Klal Yisrael does on Purim. Unlike the nations, who refuse to come, we want to connect with the Ribbono Shel Olam and accept the Torah bโ€™ahavah, so that we can bask in the light of Hashem and merit the geulah.
