Three Steps to Powerful Tefillos

Rashi explains that the word ื•ึทื™ึผึถืขึฐืชึผึทืจ means: ื”ืจื‘ื” ื•ื”ืคืฆื™ืจ ื‘ืชืคืœื”, Yitzchak davened repeatedly and persistently, โ€œnudgingโ€ Hashem, kaveyachol. Finally, Hashem finally answered him: ื•ึทื™ึผึตืขึธืชึถืจ ืœื•ึน ื”’, which Rashi explains as: ื ืชืคืฆืจ ื•ื ืชืคื™ื™ืก ื•ื ืชืคืชื” ืœื• โ€“ Hashem was convinced.

It sounds as though Hakadosh Baruch Hu did not want to answer the tefillah of Yitzchak and had to be convinced. But we know that Hakadosh Baruch Hu answers our tefillos, so why did Yitzchak have to daven so strenuously to appease and persuade Hashem to grant his request?

Someone told Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld the following explanation. Later in the parashah, Rashi says that Avraham Avinu was really supposed to live 180 years, like Yitzchak, but since Hakadosh Baruch Hu promised him that he would die ื‘ึผึฐืฉื‚ึตื™ื‘ึธื” ื˜ื•ึนื‘ึธื”, he had to be taken from this world before Eisav turned wicked. Therefore, Avraham passed away five years early, at the age of 175.

Originally, Hashemโ€™s plan was that Eisav should be born five years later, so that Avraham could live until 180, but Yitzchakโ€™s persistent tefillos โ€œconvincedโ€ Hashem to grant him children earlier. Because of Yitzchakโ€™s prayers, Hashem couldnโ€™t hold back, kavyachol.

Upon hearing this explanation, Rav Yosef Chaim responded, on the spot, that the phrase ื•ึทื™ึผึตืขึธืชึถืจ ืœื•ึน ื”’ has the same gematria as ื—ืžืฉ ืฉื ื™ื (both equal 748).

Answering Yitzchakโ€™s tefillah came at a high cost: five years of Avrahamโ€™s life.

When this vort was told to Rav Aharon Kotler, he was so impressed that he said, โ€œSuch a gematria could only have been said with ruach hakodesh.โ€

Rabbeinu Bachaye expresses a similar idea. He explains why each of the imahos โ€“ Sarah, Rivka, and Rochel โ€“ had to be akaros, and the reason he gives for Rivkaโ€™s barrenness is that she was going to give birth to Eisav, and Hashem didnโ€™t want Avraham to see Eisav embark on a wicked path.

If Hakadosh Baruch Hu already made Yitzchak and Rivka wait twenty years to have children, why didnโ€™t He make them wait another five years, so that Avraham could live to his full lifespan? Thatโ€™s because, as Rashi says, Yitzchak Avinu ื”ืจื‘ื” ื•ื”ืคืฆื™ืจ ื‘ืชืคืœื”.

Iโ€™d like to highlight three important points about tefillah that we can learn from Rashi.

One: Tefillah Requires Persistence

Sometimes a person davens once, twice, three times โ€“ he keeps davening for the same thing, but he doesnโ€™t Hakadosh Baruch Hu answering, so he despairs, thinking heโ€™s not worthy. We have to be prepared to daven again, and again, and again, to be the biggest โ€œnudgeโ€ possible. No tefillah is wasted, chas vโ€™shalom. Rather, each tefillah counts, because the buildup of tefillah after tefillah is what eventually leads to Hakadosh Baruch Hu listening to our requests.

Two: Use the Correct Logic

Rashi uses unusual and seemingly repetitive terminology to describe Hashemโ€™s response to Yitzchakโ€™s prayers: ื ืชืคืฆืจ ื•ื ืชืคื™ื™ืก ื•ื ืชืคืชื” ืœื•. The word ื•ื ืชืคืชื” is actually quite puzzling. In Tachanun, in the paragraph beginning ืฉืื•ึนืžึตืจ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ, we describe Hashem as: ืžึดืชึฐืจึทืฆึผึถื” ื‘ึผึฐืจึทื—ึฒืžึดื™ื ื•ึผืžึดืชึฐืคึผึทื™ึผึตืก ื‘ึผึฐืชึทื—ึฒื ื•ึผื ึดื™ื. There is a version of this tefillah that describes Hashem as: ืžึดืชึฐืจึทืฆึผึถื” ื‘ึผึฐืจึทื—ึฒืžึดื™ื ื•ึผืžึดืชึฐืคึผึทืชึผึถื” ื‘ึผึฐืชึทื—ึฒื ื•ึผื ึดื™ื, but the Taz (Orach Chaim 127) says that this version is incorrect. He cites the Ramban in Parashas Mishpatim, where the passuk says: ื•ึฐื›ึดื™ ื™ึฐืคึทืชึผึถื” ืึดื™ืฉื ื‘ึผึฐืชื•ึผืœึธื”, and explains that the term ืคืชื•ื™ means using falsehood to convince someone. The Ramban cites the passuk says in Mishlei: ืคึผึถืชึดื™ ื™ึทืึฒืžึดื™ืŸ ืœึฐื›ึธืœ ื“ึผึธื‘ึธืจ and explains that a person who is easily swayed by others is called a ืคืชื™. The phrase ื•ึผืžึดืชึฐืคึผึทืชึผึถื” ื‘ึผึฐืชึทื—ึฒื ื•ึผื ึดื™ื implies that we speak falsehood to Hakadosh Baruch Hu to get him to answer our tefillah, and thatโ€™s wrong, because there can be no ืคืชื•ื™ vis-ร -vis Hashem.

How, then, can Rashi says that Hashem was ื ืชืคืชื” to Yitzchakโ€™s tefillah?

Rashi actually interprets the words ื•ึฐื›ึดื™ ื™ึฐืคึทืชึผึถื” ืึดื™ืฉื ื‘ึผึฐืชื•ึผืœึธื” differently from the Ramban. On those words, he comments: ืžื“ื‘ืจ ืขืœ ืœื‘ื” ืขื“ ืฉืฉื•ืžืขืช ืœื•. According to Rashi, the term ืคืชื•ื™ means to speak to someoneโ€™s heart, using the right words and reasoning to convince the person to do something. Understood this way, ืคืชื•ื™ doesnโ€™t mean using falsehood; it means knowing how to be convincing. Thatโ€™s why Rashi sees fit to use the word ื•ื ืชืคืชื” regarding Hashem.

We see from here that not only do we have to persist in our tefillos, we also have to โ€œconvinceโ€ Hashem to listen to us. Thatโ€™s a whole new dimension in davening: not just to ask and ask, but to find a reason thatโ€™s convincing enough to make Him decide to give it to us.

The Gemara (Bava Kamma 50) tells the story of Nechunya the well-digger, who dug wells for the people who were oleh regel. Once, his daughter fell into a pit and was in mortal danger. When Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa was apprised of this, he declared that the girl was fine. Sure enough, she managed to get out of the pit. Rabbi Chanina was asked how he knew the girl was fine, and he answered, โ€œIโ€™m neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I reasoned that if a tzaddik took pains to dig wells, it could not be that his own daughter would be harmed by a well.โ€

The Shitah Mekubetzes cites the explanation of Rabbeinu Yeshayah, noting that Rabbi Chanina used the word ืืžืจืชื™ (ืืžืจืชื™ ื“ื‘ืจ ืฉืื•ืชื• ืฆื“ื™ืง ืžืฆื˜ืขืจ ื‘ื• ื™ื›ืฉืœ ื‘ื• ื–ืจืขื•), implying that he used a logical argument in davening to Hashem. In the words of the Shitah Mekubetzes: ื•ื”ืกื›ื™ื ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื”ื•ื ืœื“ื‘ืจื™ ืฉื›ืŸ ื“ืจื›ื• ืฉืœ ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื”ื•ื ืฉืžืกื›ื™ื ืœืกื‘ืจืช ื”ืฆื“ื™ืงื™ื ืฉื‘ื“ื•ืจ.

Rabbi Chanina didnโ€™t just ask โ€“ he used a sevarah. Similarly, we have to come up with a good reason why Hakadosh Baruch Hu should do what we want him to do. Thatโ€™s the concept of ืคืชื•ื™.

Three: Careful How You Ask

If you persist in asking the Eibishter, Heโ€™ll answer you. But you have to be careful, because sometimes Hakadosh Baruch Hu may grant your request even though itโ€™s not the best thing for you, or itโ€™s not the right time. Case in point: Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted to wait another five years so that Avraham could live until 180, but Yitzchak davened so powerfully and persistently that Hashem answered him sooner, at the cost of five years of Avrahamโ€™s life.

Itโ€™s also important to phrase our requests wisely. The Gemara (Moed Kattan 18) states that even though we donโ€™t make weddings on Chol Hamoed, eirusin is permitted, for fear that someone else might preempt the shidduch through his tefillos: ืฉืžื ื™ืงื“ืžื ื• ืื—ืจ ื‘ืจื—ืžื™ื. The Gemara goes on to relate that Rava heard someone davening that he should marry a certain girl. โ€œDonโ€™t daven that way,โ€ Rava advised. The Chiddushei Haran explains that if that girl was bashert for him, as announced in the bas kol, he would marry her anyway, and if she wasnโ€™t his bashert, his tefillos would enable him to get her, but eventually he would lose her. If the bas kol had pronounced that she was destined for someone else, and his tefillos overrode that bas kol, eventually he would die or they would get divorced, and then she would revert to the original person she was intended for.

Rav Elyah Lopian noted that tefillah is like a ื—ึถืจึถื‘ ืคึผึดื™ืคึดื™ึผื•ึนืช, a double-edged sword: if youโ€™re not careful with such a sword, youโ€™ll cut yourself. Similarly, the power of tefillah is so strong that you can โ€œcut yourselfโ€ with it, by having Hakadosh Baruch Hu granting your request even though it might not be the best thing for you.

Accordingly, Rava told the man who was davening to marry a certain girl to pray that if sheโ€™s the one whoโ€™s bashert for him, it should go easily. Thatโ€™s how we daven: we ask for what we need, but with the stipulation that we only want it if itโ€™s right for us.

When we bentch Rosh Chodesh, we ask for Why do we add the word ืœึฐื˜ื•ึนื‘ึธื”? Because we have many wishes and desires, but we want Hashem to grant those wishes only if itโ€™s in our best interest.

We should all be zocheh to strengthen ourselves in tefillah and to learn how to be marbeh uโ€™maftzir bโ€™tefillah so that Hakadosh Baruch Hu should be nisratzeh, nispayes, and nispateh to us.
