Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz Shlita

Elevating the Mikdash In Our Times

Parashas Tetzaveh

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita

Parashas Tetzaveh discusses the mitzvah of bigdei kehunah. The sefarim hakedoshim explain that the fact that the people who do the avodah in the Beis Hamikdash wear clothes that are ืœึฐื›ึธื‘ื•ึนื“ ื•ึผืœึฐืชึดืคึฐืึธืจึถืช is a remez to the Zoharโ€™s teaching that leโ€™asid lavo, for every mitzvah that we do, and for our limud Torah and tikkun hamiddos, weโ€™ll be zocheh that our neshamah will be dressed in noble clothing, just as the kohanim who served in the Beis Hamikdash dressed in begadim that showed the kavod and yekar of avodas Hashem.

We know that Aharon was zocheh to the choshen on his heart because of ื•ึฐืจึธืึฒืšึธ ื•ึฐืฉื‚ึธืžึทื— ื‘ึผึฐืœึดื‘ึผื•ึน โ€“ when he saw that Moshe Rabbeinu was going to be the leader of Klal Yisrael, not only was he not jealous, he was happy for his brother. A heart that has beautiful middos gets to wear the choshen, the jewelry on the heart. And we all know that people who have beautiful middos are really the beautiful people in Klal Yisrael. Theyโ€™re the people we look up to and respect, ย and theyโ€™re the people who have a special shine, a hadras panim. If that is true in our times, how much more so will it be true leโ€™asid lavo. The true glory of a person is when heโ€™s oved Hashem, when heโ€™s careful about mitzvos, about not stealing, about kedushas haโ€™adam, about limud Torah and middos tovos, about bein adam lachaveiro. Those are the people who are really special people, and leโ€™asid lavo Hashem is going to dress them with beautiful begadim to show the beautiful maalah that they were zocheh to in avodas Hashem.

The Gemara (Gittin 7) cites a passuk in Yechezkel (21) in which Hashem calls Tzidkiyahu a rasha because he didnโ€™t listen to Hashem โ€“ Hashem told him to surrender to the Bavlim and instead he went to war with them. The result would be that ื”ึธืกึดื™ืจ ื”ึทืžึผึดืฆึฐื ึถืคึถืช ื•ึฐื”ึธืจึดื™ื ื”ึธืขึฒื˜ึธืจึธื”, which Rashi and Targum Unkelos explain means that the mitznefes of the kohen gadol and the crown of King Tzidkiyahu would be removed, because of their actions. The Gemara adds another explanation, that the crown mentioned here refers to the crown on the head of chassanim. A crown shows chashivus, the stature of a person.

The Gemara then relates that the malachim asked Hashem how this could happen to Klal Yisrael, who said naaseh venishma and merited the crowns that showed their chashivus. How could they now be losing those crowns in galus?

Hashem answered, as it says in the continuation of the above passuk, that they โ€œlowered that which was high and raised that which was low, and they placed a tzelem in the heichal.โ€

As long as Klal Yisrael gives honor to Hashem, to the makom hamikdash, to the batei kneisios and batei midrashos, and to the Torah and mitzvos, Hashem elevates us and grants us all the maalos. But when they placed a tzelem in the heichal, degrading that which was holy and elevating that which was lowly, they lost the crown of their humanity and the beauty of a human being.

Although in our times we donโ€™t have a Beis Hamikdash, there are still many ways to place a tzelem in heichal โ€“ for instance, if we go into the batei kneisios and the batei midrashos and speak dvarim beteilim, or if we bring our phones with us and answer them. Sometimes you can even see people reading magazines in a makom kadosh! That shows a lack of sensitivity for what a shul is.

Once, when I was visiting America, I was davening in a shul in Long Island, when suddenly I felt something crawling up my leg. I looked down and saw a little cute kid holding a toy dinosaur, which he was moving up my foot. โ€œA monster is eating the rabbi from Israel!โ€ he announced. I wasnโ€™t going to tell him to stop, but I figured Iโ€™d say something to his father. Someone pointed out his father to me, and he was standing at the side schmoozing with his friends. So I thought to myself, what can I expect from this kid? He sees his father coming to shul and schmoozing away in middle of davening โ€“ of course he brings his toys, of course itโ€™s not a makom kadosh in his eyes. If this is the way the father treats the shul, what chance does the child have?

The childโ€™s yarmulke said โ€œNew York Islandersโ€ (which is the name of a hockey team, for those who donโ€™t know), and I was thinking that the reason we put a yarmulke on our heads is to remember that the Shechinah is above us. But what does this child have on his head, above him? The New York Islanders. And when this boy grows up heโ€™ll have a girlfriend knit a yarmulke for him and heโ€™ll put it on his head and instead of thinking about Hakadosh Baruch Hu, heโ€™ll think about his girlfriend. Thatโ€™s not putting a tzelem in the heichal? Thatโ€™s not taking things that are so kadosh and meaningful and using them for something else?

The Mikdash Within

And what about our houses? We have the power to turn our homes into a beis Hashem: ืฉืึดื‘ึฐืชึผึดื™ ื‘ึผึฐื‘ึตื™ืช ื”’ ื›ึผึธืœ ื™ึฐืžึตื™ ื—ึทื™ึผึทื™. But what do we bring into our homes? We bring in smartphones, where we can watch movies chas vโ€™shalom and other goyishe things. Nebach, you walk into some houses and they have loads of goyishe books that contain such nivul peh; itโ€™s embarrassing to see whatโ€™s in the books. And they listen to goyishe music, where the words themselves are such a tzelem, so low. How could we bring this into our houses or our cars? What theyโ€™re talking about is so inappropriate.

Do we bring tefillos into our houses? Do we say Tehillim for our children, that they should be successful? Do we establish limud hatorah in our houses, or do we put a tzelem in the heichal?

The avodah zarah of our times is not the avodah zarah of the past โ€“ itโ€™s the gashmiyus of Olam Hazeh, which we worship, and to which the Gaon sees an allusion in the term ืขื’ืœ ื”ื–ื”ื‘. Do we have tzelem in our homes, or are our homes places of Torah and kedushah? When you walk into a house, do you get the sense that Torah and avodas Hashem are important, or do you see something else?

Every person is a mikdash meโ€™at, and the Nefesh Hachaim says that our heart is the kodesh hakodashim. When we think about certain things that arenโ€™t kadosh, are we placing a tzelem in the heichal?

Titus brought a zonah and was mecharef; itโ€™s hard to say it from our mouths. But are we bringing a tzelem into our heichal, our kodesh hakodashim? Or are we filling the holy heart and mind of a Yid with divrei kedushah, with good middos and mitzvos? What are we putting in our heichal?

When we honor Hashem and fill our hearts and minds with divrei Torah and middos tovos, when we think about other people, when weโ€™re good to people, when we keep the Torah and mitzvos โ€“ then weโ€™re zocheh to a beautiful crown, to the kesser haโ€™adam that makes people special both in this world and leโ€™asid lavo. Then, the beauty of the person will be unbelievable. There isnโ€™t a brand name company that will make nicer clothes, and there isnโ€™t a custom sheitel that will be more beautiful than the crown thatโ€™s on the head of someone whoโ€™s shpitz in avodas Hashem.

Thatโ€™s the remez of the bigdei kehunah: to value avodas Hashem, the kedushas haโ€™adam, the kedushah of the mikdash and beis haknesses. Through that, we should be zocheh that Hashem should rebuild the Beis Hamikdash for us. When we give honor to His mekomos hakedoshim and His mitzvos, weโ€™ll all be zocheh to the beautiful clothes that are designated for people who always elevated Hakadosh Baruch Hu and His Torah and mitzvos.
