Becoming a Dwelling

Parshas Terumah

Harav Hagaon Binyomin Cohen shlita

Parshas Terumah begins with the mitzvah to build the Mishkan: ื•ึฐืขึธืฉื‚ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ืžึดืงึฐื“ึผึธืฉื ื•ึฐืฉืึธื›ึทื ึฐืชึผึดื™ ื‘ึผึฐืชื•ึนื›ึธื. The Torah then elaborates, in the course of four parshiyos, regarding this mitzvah. Rโ€™ Chaim Volozhiner cites Chazalโ€™s teaching that when the Torah says ื•ึฐืฉืึธื›ึทื ึฐืชึผึดื™ ื‘ึผึฐืชื•ึนื›ึธื โ€” โ€œI will dwell in them,โ€ in the plural โ€” it means in each individual. Every single Yid is obligated to build a dwelling place within himself for the Shechinah. The Torah goes on to say, in the next passuk, ื•ึฐื›ึตืŸ ืชึผึทืขึฒืฉื‚ื•ึผ โ€” which, the Gemara teaches, means for all generations. Rโ€™ Chaim understands this to mean that every Yid, in every generation, must make himself fit for the Shechinah to dwell within him.

This idea is reflected in the famous story with Rโ€™ Aharon Leib Shteinman, who, as a young man, was learning in a shul in Switzerland late at night. When a man passed by and noticed a light on in the shul, he went inside to shut the light, and was surprised to see a bachur there sitting and learning. โ€œAre you studying for semichah?โ€ he inquired.

โ€œNo,โ€ said Rโ€™ Aharon Leib.

โ€œThen are you learning to become a dayan?โ€ he asked. โ€œWhy are you up so late learning?โ€

Rโ€™ Shteinman replied, โ€œI want to become a merkavah for the Shechinah.โ€

The Mesilas Yesharim says clearly (ch. 26), ื”ืฆื“ื™ืงื™ื ื”ืŸ ื”ืŸ ื”ืžืจื›ื‘ื” ื›ื™ ื”ืฉื›ื™ื ื” ืฉื•ืจื” ืขืœื™ื”ื ื›ืžื• ืฉื”ื™ืชื” ืฉื•ืจื” ื‘ืžืงื“ืฉ โ€” tzaddikim are the merkavah for the Shechinah, for the Shechinah dwells upon them, just as it dwelled in the Beis Hamikdash. We donโ€™t have a Beis Hamikdash today, but we still have the Shechinahโ€™s presence. Where does the Shechinah rest today? It dwells upon those tzaddikim who transformed themselves into a merkavah for the Shechinah.

How does a person accomplish this goal of turning himself into a dwelling place for the Shechinah? I would like to suggest several ways.

The Binyan Tzion, written by the author of the Aruch Laner, notes (siman 3) that the Shechinah occupies the entire world โ€” ืžืœื ื›ืœ ื”ืืจืฅ ื›ื‘ื•ื“ื• โ€” and there is no place devoid of His presence. But there are times and places where a separation or barrier blocks the Shechinah. He explains this with an analogy of someone opening the curtains or shutters to allow light inside. Obviously, when he let in the light, the sun did not move in order for its rays to enter the house. Rather, there was a barrier preventing the light from entering, and when he removed that blockage by opening the curtains, the light entered automatically. Similarly, before Adam Harishon sinned, the Shechinah was clearly present everywhere in the world, but after the cheit, a barrier was erected. Our avodah โ€” the job of every Yid โ€” is to eliminate those barriers and allow the Shechinah to enter our very essence.

One way to tear down these barriers is through mesirus nefesh, which means giving up things that are important to you in order to fulfill ratzon Hashem. Indeed, when the Mishkan was being built, Moshe Rabbeinu instructed Klal Yisrael to donate their gold, silver, jewels, and other valuables. Obviously, Hakadosh Baruch Hu doesnโ€™t need our money โ€” ืœึดื™ ื”ึทื›ึถึผืกึถืฃ ื•ึฐืœึดื™ ื”ึทื–ึธึผื”ึธื‘ ื ึฐืึปื ื”’. But we need to give it, to surrender whatโ€™s valuable to us, in order to forge a connection between ourselves and Hakadosh Baruch Hu, breaking through the barriers so that the Shechinah can penetrate.

Support Torah, Support Shechinah

A second way for the Shechinah to dwell within us is through our supporting Torah and those who learn it. The Shechinah, we know, rested on the aron, as the passuk states: The aron, representing Torah, draws the Shechinahโ€™s influence upon the entire world.

The aron had badim, poles, on its side, with which it was carried. Unlike the poles connected to the other keilim of the Mishkan, these poles had to remain attached to the aron at all times: ื‘ึฐึผื˜ึทื‘ึฐึผืขึนืช ื”ึธืึธืจึนืŸ ื™ึดื”ึฐื™ื•ึผ ื”ึทื‘ึทึผื“ึดึผื™ื ืœึนื ื™ึธืกึปืจื•ึผ ืžึดืžึถึผื ึผื•ึผ. The mefarshim discuss why, if the apparent purpose of the poles was to carry the aron, they were never allowed to be removed.

The Chasam Sofer, the Chofetz Chaim, and others explain that the badim of the aron represent the machzikei haTorah, those who support and uphold the Torah. Those supporters have to be attached to the Torah at all times. The Chofetz Chaim adds that since the poles enabled the carrying of the aron hakodesh, they absorbed its kedushah, and therefore they were zocheh to remain with the aron always โ€” just as Zevulun receives the kedushah of Yissacharโ€™s Torah.

A certain Yid put aside money to pay for the aron hakodesh in Rโ€™ Saadiah Gaonโ€™s yeshiva, but when he traveled to the yeshiva to deliver the money, he discovered that the aron hakodesh had already been built with someone elseโ€™s money. The question then arose: What should be done with the money he had designated for this purpose? The money could not be used for something of lesser kedushah, but what could it be used for?

Rโ€™ Saadiah ruled that the money should be used for the shtenders, tables, benches, and beds of the bachurim in the yeshiva. Since every bachur is a veritable sefer Torah, these objects would serve as an aron hakodesh of sorts for those sifrei Torah.

Rโ€™ Meir Hershkowitz ztโ€l, a talmid of Rโ€™ Aharon Kotler, related that once, someone visited the Lakewood yeshiva and urged the bachurim to go out and be mekarev Yidden: โ€œThere are so many Yidden who canโ€™t say Shema Yisrael, who donโ€™t know about Shabbos, who have no idea what Torah is!โ€ When Rโ€™ Aharon heard about this, he was dismayed. โ€œWhat?โ€ he exclaimed. โ€œYou bachurim are not doing kiruv? Your limud haTorah affects the entire world, and brings the Shechinah everywhere!โ€

In Parshas Vayeitzei, when Yaakov left Beโ€™er Sheva, Rashi comments that his departure left a void: ืคื ื” ื”ื•ื“ื” ืคื ื” ื–ื™ื•ื” ืคื ื” ื”ื“ืจื” โ€” the glory of the city was gone. Now, Yaakov Avinu had been hiding away in the yeshiva of Shem and Eiver, and was out of the public eye. No one saw him, and no one was aware of his presence. Nevertheless, Chazal are telling us that the power of the Torah radiates throughout the city.

We see that the way to bring down the Shechinah โ€” ื•ึฐืขึธืฉื‚ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ืžึดืงึฐื“ึผึธืฉื ื•ึฐืฉืึธื›ึทื ึฐืชึผึดื™ ื‘ึผึฐืชื•ึนื›ึธื โ€” is through limud haTorah, and that those who support Torah also have an integral part in bringing the Shechinah to Klal Yisrael.

Manifesting the Shechinah

A third way for the Shechinah to dwell within us is perhaps reflected in these words of the Ramban in our parshah: ื•ืกื•ื“ ื”ืžืฉื›ืŸ ื”ื•ื ืฉื™ื”ื™ื” ื”ื›ื‘ื•ื“ ืืฉืจ ืฉื›ืŸ ืขืœ ื”ืจ ืกื™ื ื™ ืฉื•ื›ืŸ ืขืœื™ื• ื‘ื ืกืชืจ โ€” the secret of the Mishkan was that Hashemโ€™s glory, which rested upon Har Sinai, should rest upon it in a concealed way. At Mattan Torah, Hashemโ€™s glory was manifest with powerful sights and sounds, but afterwards Hashem wanted us to build the Mishkan as a place for His honor to rest in a concealed way.

The Rambam (Hilchos Deios ch. 5) describes at length how a talmid chacham is meant to act. He should speak softly, and be first to extend a greeting to another person. He should speak positively of others, and never negatively, and should give people the benefit of the doubt.

The way a talmid chacham behaves is a manifestation of Hashemโ€™s glory, for his entire essence proclaims kevod Shamayim. This is also a way of creating a mikdash, a place for the Shechinah to dwell.

This week the yeshiva held a gathering called โ€œMann Malchi Rabbanan,โ€ which was similar to the Lakewood Yeshivaโ€™s Adirei HaTorah. The gathering was an opportunity for us to be mechazek ourselves and to recognize the great zechus we have to bring the Shechinah into the world. Just as the aron hakodesh brought down the Shechinah, so too our limud haTorah, and our conducting ourselves in a way that brings honor to Hashem, brings Shechinah and light to the entire world.

In Europe, a yeshiva bachur was looked down upon and called a โ€œbank kvetcher,โ€ a bench warmer. Rโ€™ Yerucham Levovitz observed that that the reason he is called this is that he thinks of himself that way.

If we were to look at ourselves and realize how special we are and how important what we are doing is, the world would look at us differently. We have to know that bnei yeshiva are the most important people in the world and the ones accomplishing the most for Klal Yisrael.

Letโ€™s strive to bring kevod Shamayim to the world, so that we can be zocheh, bโ€™ezras Hashem, to the ultimate revelation of His glory.

Gut Shabbos.
