Harav Hagaon Binyamin Cohen Shlita

Giving the Heart, Giving to Ourselves

Parashas Terumah

Harav Hagaon Binyamin Cohen Shlita

The parashah focuses on the mitzvah of building a Mishkan. To fulfill this mitzvah, Klal Yisrael donated gold, silver, and copper; techeiles, argaman, and other fabrics; the avnei shoham and avnei miluim; and more.

The rosh yeshiva, R’ Nosson Tzvi ztโ€l, asked the following question. The Mishkan was a place of spirituality, of hashraas haShechinah, so why was all this gashmius necessary? Isnโ€™t it inappropriate for a Makom Shechinah to be bedecked with all these beautiful, expensive items?

He answered that from Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s perspective, there was indeed no reason to have all this gashmiyus, and simple bare walls would have sufficed. But since the Mishkan was meant to be a dwelling place for the Shechinah, Klal Yisrael had to create a suitable vessel through which they could connect to Him, and that vessel was the nedivus halev they exhibited by donating expensive items that had value to them, as humans. By โ€œgivingโ€ to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, they fashioned a vehicle through which they could connect to Him and cause His Shechinah to dwell among them.

This idea is reflected in the fact that the most valuable items on the list, the avnei shoham and avnei miluim, are mentioned last. The monetary value of these precious stones far surpassed any of the preceding items, so we would think that they should have been mentioned first. Yet Chazal reveal to us why these items are considered relatively inconsequential. The nesiโ€™im were lax in donating to the Mishkan, reasoning that they would wait until the rest of Klal Yisrael had finished donating, and then they would fill in what was missing. At the end, however, nothing was missing, thanks to the outpouring of generosity that Klal Yisrael exhibited, so Hakadosh Baruch Hu arranged for the ananei hakavod to miraculously deliver the avnei shoham and avnei miluim to the nesiโ€™im, which they then donated. But because the bringing of these precious stones involved little work and nedivus halev, they are considered less meaningful than the other, less valuable items that Klal Yisrael brought.

Hakadosh Baruch Hu was not looking for great achievements, nor was He looking for the end product. Rather, He was looking for the effort and nedivus halev. Thatโ€™s what created the vessel for hashraas haShechinah, and therefore, the gold and silver โ€” which involved much more nedivus halev โ€” came earlier on the list.

The Shechinah Within

We know the purpose of the Mishkan was ื•ึฐืฉึธืื›ึทื ึฐืชึดึผื™ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนื›ึธื โ€” for the Shechinah to dwell among Klal Yisrael. What is โ€œShechinahโ€?

On a very simple level, we can explain that Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s glory fills the world โ€” ืžืœื ื›ืœ ื”ืืจืฅ ื›ื‘ื•ื“ื•; in the words of the Zohar, ืœื™ืช ืืชืจ ืคื ื•ื™ ืžื ื™ื”, there is no place devoid of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Yet although the Shechinah โ€” this presence of Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€” is everywhere, there are some places where its presence is more palpable and others where it is less discernable. In some places, it is clear and obvious that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is the Borei Olam, and the Mishkan was such a place. The Beis Hamikdash, too, was a place of hashraas haShechinah, where ten nissim occurred regularly, and we were able to feel Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s presence palpably and recognize that He is the Melech Ha’olam.

The Ramban, at the beginning of the parashah, teaches that the revelation of Hashemโ€™s presence at Har Sinai, where everyone perceived His glory, was channeled into the Mishkan in a more concealed way. Not everyone saw the Shechinah there; it wasnโ€™t revealed to the whole world, but its presence was similarly manifest, albeit less openly.

Chazal explain that the reason the Torah states ื•ึฐืฉึธืื›ึทื ึฐืชึดึผื™ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนื›ึธื, using the plural form โ€œI will well among themโ€ rather than simply stating, โ€œI will dwell in itโ€ (i.e., the Mishkan), is that Hashem was declaring that He would dwell ื‘ืชื•ืš ื›ืœ ืื—ื“ ื•ืื—ื“, within each individual. When a person โ€œgivesโ€ to Hashem and prepares himself to connect with Him and perceive Him in his life, then he merits having Hashem โ€œdwellingโ€ inside him. The more you work on seeing Hakadosh Baruch Hu and connecting with him, the more you are zocheh to ื•ึฐืฉึธืื›ึทื ึฐืชึดึผื™ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนื›ึธื.

When Taking is Giving

Regarding the words ื•ึฐื™ึดืงึฐื—ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ืชึฐึผืจื•ึผืžึธื”, many mefarshim wonder why the Torah uses the verb ื•ึฐื™ึดืงึฐื—ื•ึผ, they shall take, instead of ื•ื™ืชื ื•, they shall give, or ื•ื”ื‘ื™ืื•, they shall bring. The Shmaatsa, in his hakdamah, cites the following explanation of the Alshich. Chazal, in Kiddushin, expound the passuk ื›ึดึผื™ ื™ึดืงึทึผื— ืึดื™ืฉื ืึดืฉึธึผืื” to mean that the man has to be mekadesh the woman, by giving her an item of monetary value; the woman cannot be mekadesh the man by giving him an item of monetary value. If, however, the man is a distinguished person, and he doesnโ€™t accept gifts from just anybody, then he can be mekadesh a woman by accepting a gift from her. Since he gave her the pleasure of accepting her gift, she is considered to have received something from him, and is thereby mekudeshes.

Similarly, says the Alshich, when Klal Yisrael donated valuable items to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for the construction of the Mishkan, they enjoyed the pleasure of having Him accept their gifts. Thatโ€™s why the Torah says ื•ึฐื™ึดืงึฐื—ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ืชึฐึผืจื•ึผืžึธื”, conveying that Klal Yisrael were the ones who gained, through their โ€œgivingโ€ to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

Another answer is offered by Vilna Gaon, based on the Mishnahโ€™s statement that when a person leaves this world, he takes nothing with him but Torah and mitzvos: ืฉึถืื‘ึดึผืฉึฐืืขึทืช ืคึฐึผื˜ึดื™ืจึธืชื•ึน ืฉึถืืœ ืึธื“ึธื ืึตื™ืŸ ืžึฐืœึทื•ึดื™ืŸ ืœื•ึน ืœึฐืึธื“ึธื ืœึนื ื›ึถืกึถืฃ ื•ึฐืœึนื ื–ึธื”ึธื‘ ื•ึฐืœึนื ืึฒื‘ึธื ึดื™ื ื˜ื•ึนื‘ื•ึนืช ื•ึผืžึทืจึฐื’ึธึผืœึดื™ึผื•ึนืช, ืึถืœึธึผื ืชึผื•ึนืจึธื” ื•ึผืžึทืขึฒืฉึดื‚ื™ื ื˜ื•ึนื‘ึดื™ื ื‘ึดึผืœึฐื‘ึธื“. There is, however, one type of money that a person does take with him to the grave, says the Vilna Gaon, and that is the tzedakah that he gave during his lifetime. The Gemara (Bava Basra 11a) records the story of King Munbaz, who opened his treasure houses to the public during a famine to feed the poor, depleting the fortunes he and his forebears had amassed.

His brothers and other relatives objected to his magnanimity, protesting, โ€œYou and your forefathers saved up so much money, and now you are wasting it all and emptying the treasuries?โ€

He responded, โ€œMy fathers amassed fortunes for the sake of others, while I amassed a fortune for myself, as the passuk says, ื•ึผืœึฐืšึธ ืชึดึผื”ึฐื™ึถื” ืฆึฐื“ึธืงึธื”, implying that the tzedakah you give will be yours forever. My fathers amassed fortunes in this world, while I am amassing fortunes in Olam Haba.โ€

If so, says the Vilna Gaon, when a person โ€œgivesโ€ tzedakah, he is really โ€œtakingโ€ for himself. This explains why Klal Yisraelโ€™s donation to the Mishkan is described as taking, not as giving.

In line with our explanation above that the way to be zocheh to having the Shechinah dwell among us is through nedivus halev โ€” giving up what is precious to us for the sake of Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€” we can suggest another reason why the Torah describes the giving to the Mishkan as ื•ึฐื™ึดืงึฐื—ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ืชึฐึผืจื•ึผืžึธื”. Through giving our money and possessions, we create a vessel for the Shechninah, and forge our personal connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu: ื•ึฐืฉึธืื›ึทื ึฐืชึดึผื™ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนื›ึธื.

Adar: Creating a Dwelling

Weโ€™re now in Chodesh Adar, and the Sfas Emes cites his grandfatherโ€™s observation that the name โ€œAdarโ€ can be read as โ€œAdur,โ€ meaning, โ€œI will dwell.โ€ Chazal relate that when Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave Klal Yisrael the Torah, which was His โ€œonly daughter,โ€ He requested that they make Him one room where He can dwell. This is why Parashas Terumah, which describes the building of the Mishkan, immediately follows Mattan Torah.

Adar, then, is a month when we can work towards creating a place for Hakadosh Baruch Hu to dwell within us.

The Rambam teaches, in Hilchos Megillah, that on Purim it is preferable to invest more in matanos laโ€™evyonim than in mishloach manos and seudas Purim, explaining that gladdening the downtrodden is the greatest joy of all, and one who makes these unfortunate people happy is similar to the Shechinah, as the passuk states (Yeshayah 57:15), ืœึฐื”ึทื—ึฒื™ื•ึนืช ืจื•ึผื—ึท ืฉึฐืืคึธืœึดื™ื ื•ึผืœึฐื”ึทื—ึฒื™ื•ึนืช ืœึตื‘ ื ึดื“ึฐื›ึธึผืึดื™ื. So besides the opportunity, in Adar, to create a dwelling place for Hakadosh Baruch Hu within us, we also have the opportunity to be like Hakadosh Baruch Hu, through the mitzvah of matanos laโ€™evyonim.

It is no coincidence that at this time of year, when we can create a place of Hakadosh Baruch Hu to dwell โ€” โ€œAdur,โ€ we are also supposed to be marbeh bโ€™simchah, because building that connection with Hakadosh Baruch Hu and enabling Him to dwell within us brings us to higher and higher levels of joy.

We should all be zocheh to use Chodesh Adar to shteig and achieve genuine simchah.

Gut Shabbos.
