Potential for Perfection

Parshas Tazria-Metzora

Rashi states, at the beginning of the parshah, regarding the words

The previous parshah, Shemini, discussed the tumah and taharah of animals, while Tazria discusses the tumah and taharah of people, and Rashi, quoting Vayikra Rabbah, explains that this follows the sequence of the original briyah, when the animals were created before people.

Why, indeed, was man was created after the animals? If he was the purpose of the entire creation, why was he created last?

Another question relates to the Midrash quoted by Rashi, which cites the passuk (Tehillim 139) ืื—ื•ืจ ื•ืงื“ื ืฆืจืชื ื™ and explains that manโ€™s creation at the end of the briyah is meant to convey the following message: ืื ื–ื›ื” ืื“ื ืื•ืžืจื™ื ืœื• ืืชื” ืงื“ืžืช ืœื›ืœ ืžืขืฉื” ื‘ืจืืฉื™ืช, ื•ืื ืœืื• ืื•ืžืจื™ื ืœื• ื™ืชื•ืฉ ืงื“ืžืš โ€” if man is worthy, then he is told, โ€œYou preceded all of creation,โ€ and if he is unworthy, he is told, โ€œEven a gnat preceded you.โ€ So whether he preceded or followed the animals depends on his behavior. In reality, the plan to create him came first, though his actual creation happened last, but how do we understand this dichotomy of man being both first and last in creation?

A third question Iโ€™d like to address: why does the mitzvah of milah appear here, at the beginning of the discussion of the tumah of man? What connection is there between milah and tumah?

The Yismach Moshe offers a beautiful insight, on the passuk in Bereishis He cites the aforementioned Midrash about ืื—ื•ืจ ื•ืงื“ื ืฆืจืชื ื™, and quotes the Sefer HaIkarimโ€™s observation that the Torah states ื•ื™ืจื ืืœืงื™ื ื›ื™ ื˜ื•ื‘ regarding each aspect of creation, with the exception of man. The Sefer HaIkarim explains that everything besides man was created in its ultimate, perfect state. An animal, for instance, comes into existence in a state of shleimus; it carries out its tafkid on the day it is born, and thatโ€™s essentially how it remains for the rest of its life. It doesnโ€™t change or grow in any significant way.

Man, on the other hand, is created imperfect; he is not yet a full adam. Thatโ€™s because the purpose of his creation is for him to work on himself to attain shleimus, and build himself through Torah and mitzvos. He is not meant to remain the same as when he is born, or even the same as he was last year or yesterday; he should constantly grow and perfect himself. In that sense, when he is born he is inferior to an animal, because he is imperfect. Therefore, says the Sefer HaIkarim, the Torah does not say ki tov about Adam, since ki tov can be said only about something that is in a state of perfection, the way Hashem intended it.

We can add that not only is man incomplete and imperfect at the outset, but it is also possible that he will corrupt himself and become a rasha, so we really donโ€™t know if he will turn out tov.

In Conjunction with Hashem

When Hashem said, ื ืขืฉื” ืื“ื, He phrased this statement in the plural, even though He actually created Adam Himself, as the passuk later says, Chazal, quoted by Rashi, explain that Hakadosh Baruch Hu consulted, as it were, with the malachim, to teach us proper, humble conduct: that a greater individual should take advice from a lesser individual. The Yismach Moshe explains, however, that the statement ื ืขืฉื” ืื“ื was addressed to Adam himself: โ€œLet us โ€” the Eibishter and you together โ€” create man.โ€ The first step of manโ€™s creation was Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s fashioning of his physical body, but that body is incomplete, and awaits manโ€™s own efforts to perfect it: Will he attain shleimus in this world by building himself and becoming a talmid chacham, a person who learns Torah and performs good deeds? So the person is โ€œmadeโ€ by the combined efforts of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and himself.

Similarly, regarding the words ืืœื” ืชื•ืœื“ื•ืช ื ื— ื ื—, the Midrash Tanchuma teaches that the main progeny of Noach was โ€” Noach himself! We generally understand that a personโ€™s toldos are his children and his maasim tovim, but according to this explanation of the Midrash, the ultimate product that a person creates in his life is his own self. What did Noach have to show for himself in his lifetime? That he made Noach, turning himself into an adam hashalem.

Returning to our first question โ€” why Adam was created last โ€” we can now explain that it is because at the time of his initial creation, man is the lowliest of all creatures. Every animal is created in a state of shleimus; a monkey or an elephant is a monkey or an elephant from the day of its birth until the day it dies. Adam is created incomplete, and in that sense, he is lower than animals and was therefore created after them.

As to whether man was really first or last in the briyah, the answer is that it depends on whether he actually achieves the shleimus he is meant to attain. If he is worthy โ€” i.e., he perfects himself โ€” then he becomes greater than anything else in the universe; he is the nezer habriyah, the crown of creation. But if is unworthy, then a gnat is more chashuv than him. The gnat, at least, has attained the shleimus it is capable of, while he is a gornisht.

Finally, the mitzvah of milah exemplifies manโ€™s role in his own creation. The Sefer HaChinuch (Mitzvah 2) wonders why, if Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted man to be circumcised, did He create him an arel. He answers that Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted man to be the one to perfect the human body, so He intentionally created him imperfect:

By creating man imperfect, says the Chinuch, Hakadosh Baruch Hu was hinting that just as he has the power to perfect his own body through milah, he also has the power to perfect his soul through his good deeds. The mitzvah of milah is just the beginning of the work it represents.

That is why, when the Torah begins its discussion of the tumah of man โ€” which comes after the tumah of animals, just as in the sequence of the briyah โ€” it opens with the mitzvah of milah, to hint that man is created with the ability, and the need, to work to perfect himself.

This insight sheds new light on the berachah we give the baby at a bris: ื›ืฉื ืฉื ื›ื ืก ืœื‘ืจื™ืช ื›ืŸ ื™ื›ื ืก ืœืชื•ืจื” ืœื—ื•ืคื” ื•ืœืžืขืฉื™ื ื˜ื•ื‘ื™ื. We are telling him, โ€œJust as you were zocheh to perfect your body through the mitzvah of milah, you should be zocheh to perfect your soul through Torah, marriage, and good deeds.โ€

The Greatest Self-Perfection

The sefarim teach us that the main shleimus a person can acquire is through limud haTorah, which transforms the person from a collection of animalistic traits and impulses into an adam hashalem, who is in control of his desires.

The Maharal and the Vilna Gaon note that in addition to the realms of bein adam laMakom and bein adam lachaveiro, there is also a realm of bein adam lโ€™atzmo. And bein adam le’atzmo is limud haTorah. Through learning Torah a person transforms himself; nothing can change a person as much as learning Torah and make him bigger, better, and entirely different.

This is reflected in the progression of Sefiras Ha’omer. At first, on Pesach, we offer the Korban Omer, which is made of barley โ€” animal fodder. Then, on Shavuos, we offer the Shtei HaLechem, which is made of wheat โ€” human food, reflecting our own transformation, which happens through Kabbalas HaTorah.

We should all be zocheh to prepare ourselves properly for Kabbalas HaTorah and become bigger and better, as we acquire the shleimus that limud haTorah confers.
