Wahrsager, Harav Hagaon Meir Shlita

One Mouth, One Purpose

Parashas Tazria-Metzora

Harav Hagaon Meir Wahrsager shlita

Tzaraas, the Gemara tells us in Eirachin, results from the sin of lashon hara. But how can we guard ourselves from that sin?

A statement of R’ Shimon bar Yochai illuminates the way for us. The Yerushalmi (Berachos 1:2) relates that R’ Shimon bar Yochai said, โ€œIf I had stood at Har Sinai when Hashem gave the Torah, I would have asked Hashem to create two mouths for a person, one to use for Torah, and one to use for his other needs.โ€ Subsequently, however, R’ Shimon bar Yochai changed his mind. โ€œItโ€™s hard enough for a person to refrain from evil speech with one mouth,โ€ he concluded, โ€œso imagine how hard it would be to guard two mouths!โ€

The Shev Shmaatsa explains in his hakdamah, based on the Maharal, what would be the advantage of having one mouth reserved for divrei Torah and a separate mouth designated for mundane matters, such as business and casual conversation.

We know that Torah Shebichsav is written on a klaf, but does Torah Shebeโ€™al Peh have a klaf? Yes, says the Maharal. The Yidโ€™s mouth is the klaf. If so, reasons the Shmaatsa, then just as the klaf of a sefer Torah must be crafted lishmah, and designated only for the sake of the sefer Torah, then a person should really also have a mouth that is designated purely for divrei Torah. That is why R’ Shimon bar Yochai initially thought that it would be better to have one mouth only for Torah, and a separate mouth for other types of speech, which are not lishmah.

In the end, he decided that it would be too difficult to control ourselves from lashon hara โ€” which makes it sound as though he really thought it would be preferable to have two mouths, and he reconsidered only out of concern for lashon hara.

This conclusion is hard to understand, however. Even if a person would have two mouths, he still would have only one brain. How, then, could he speak out of two mouths simultaneously? Would a person talk more if he had two mouths?

We can explain that R’ Shimon bar Yochai did not mean that a person would speak more if he would have a second mouth. Rather, he meant that although there would be an advantage to separating words of Torah from mundane words, that separation would carry a great danger that would overshadow this advantage. If a person had two mouths, he might assume that kodesh and chol are two separate realms, and the mouth thatโ€™s designated for the mundane is not a venue for holiness. If so, he might reason, whatโ€™s so bad about using that mouth for garbage and failing to elevate it? After all, he has another, pure mouth that is designated for holy matters. This mundane mouth is not connected to holiness, so who cares what it says?

To dispel that notion, we were given only one mouth. The same mouth that utters divrei Torah, that proclaims Shema Yisrael, that speaks the words of the holy Rishonim, that articulates a kasha on the sugya, is also the mouth that talks about business matters and other worldly concerns. But because it is also the mouth of kedushah, the holiness influences and shapes even the divrei chol that the person utters.

Fusing Kodesh and Chol

This is a fundamental idea that relates to all areas of our avodah.

We might assume that it would be better to separate the holy from the profane, and that this would indeed be an upgrade for matters of kedushah. But thatโ€™s not the purpose of our existence in this world. Hashem created this world as a mixture of kodesh and chol, and He charged us with the mission of fusing the two and elevating our bodies โ€” and all of the physical world โ€” in our pursuit of holiness.

Letโ€™s take the concept of fasting as an example.

Fasting is a form of atonement, and is meant to help a person develop self-control as he abstains from food. But thereโ€™s also a form of abstinence known as the Taanis HaRaavad, as described by Rabbeinu Yonah, which involves leaving over some food at the end of your meal and abstaining from the final bites that will bring full satiation. There is genius behind this form of fasting, for it often happens that after a day of fasting, when a person controls his urge to eat, he attacks his food with gusto, fressing it like an animal. When a person divides the spiritual and the physical into two separate realms, he controls himself at certain times, but then reverts to his animalistic self when that โ€œspiritualโ€ period ends.

The Taanis HaRaavid propels a person to learn self-control while he is eating and indulging. Even when filling his stomach, he is conscious of the grandeur of a human being, so he is not overtaken by his taavas haโ€™achilah.

This goal of fusing kodesh and chol is what R’ Shimon bar Yochai was conveying when he said that itโ€™s better for a person to have one mouth.

No Double Identity

This concept is also very pertinent to a personโ€™s Torah learning and his efforts to earn a living. Often, when people segue from full-time learning into the business world, whether full-time or part-time, they perceive a sort of split: Thereโ€™s my learning, and thereโ€™s my work. There was a time when they identified as bnei Torah, but now theyโ€™re different people.

Thatโ€™s the worst mistake.

The Torahโ€™s influence over a personโ€™s life is total, and does not differentiate between the spiritual realm and the mundane realm. A person has to realize that heโ€™s the same person at work as he was in the beis midrash.

When a person maintains kevius ittim and dresses like a ben Torah, these serve as signposts, and create a unified identity of a ben Torah that extends to both his learning and his work. He does not have โ€œtwo mouths,โ€ two identities. He is one person, with one mouth.

When the mouth of chol is separated from the mouth of kedushah, that creates a massive danger. Who knows, as R’ Shimon bar Yochai said, how much lashon hara a person would speak if his words of kedushah and chol were not uttered by a single-unit mouth, with no bridge of influence between the two.

Similarly, when a person views any part of life as not connected to kedushah, he is in great peril.

Getting back to our parashah of Tazria-Metzora, Hakadosh Baruch Hu knows that we need to speak about all kinds of things. He placed us into this physical world, where there are so many mundane matters that demand our attention. Our challenge is to control our mouth, and the way to gain control over that mouth is to understand why we have only one mouth. The same mouth that speaks Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s beautiful words of Torah, and repeats the insights of the gedolim, also discuss business matters and schmoozes. When we identify all those words as part and parcel of our role as ovdei Hashem, that brings tremendous elevation to all aspects of our lives, and empowers our divrei Torah to influence the divrei chol that we speak with the very same mouth.

Letโ€™s use this idea to transform all parts of life, and may we be zocheh, with Hashemโ€™s help, to fulfill the words ื ึฐืฆึนืจ ืœึฐืฉืื•ึนื ึฐืšึธ ืžึตืจึธืข ื•ึผืฉึฐื‚ืคึธืชึถื™ืšึธ ืžึดื“ึทึผื‘ึตึผืจ ืžึดืจึฐืžึธื” ืกื•ึผืจ ืžึตืจึธืข ื•ึทืขึฒืฉึตื‚ื” ื˜ื•ึนื‘.
