Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shpitzer Shlita

The Ultimate Transformation

Parashas Tazria-Metzora/Sefirah

Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shpitzer

This weekโ€™s parashah is all about lashon hara and the severity of lashon hara. The Gemara (Arachin 15b) cites the passuk: ืžึทืจึฐืคึผึตื ืœึธืฉืื•ึนืŸ ืขึตืฅ ื—ึทื™ึผึดื™ื and explains that the kapparah for speaking lashon hara โ€” ืžึทืจึฐืคึผึตื ืœึธืฉืื•ึนืŸ โ€” is learning Torah: ืขึตืฅ ื—ึทื™ึผึดื™ื. Apparently, this works by the mechanism of middah kโ€™neged middah: if a person used his mouth for an aveirah, he must use that same mouth for limud haTorah in order to earn a kapparah. The Chida, in Lev Dovid, wonders how that can be, considering that we find in the Gemara a principle to the contrary: ืื™ืŸ ืงื˜ื’ื•ืจ ื ืขืฉื” ืกื ื™ื’ื•ืจ, which is why the Kohen Gadol may not wear gold garments when he enters the Kodesh Hakodashim, considering that gold was used for the cheit haโ€™eigel and is therefore an accusing force. How can it be, then, that the same mouth that sinned by speaking lashon hara can achieve kapparah by learning Torah?

The Chida answers that when a person learns Torah he is not merely performing another mitzvah. Torah has the effect of transforming the person and changing his entire being and DNA. Accordingly, the mouth that subsequently learns Torah is a different mouth, and the person who spoke lashon hara is now an entirely new person. Therefore, it is possible for this new mouth to achieve kapparah on behalf of the old mouth.

Similarly, when the Torah says: ื–ึนืืช ืชึผื•ึนืจึทืช ื ึถื’ึทืข ืฆึธืจึทืขึทืช, the rule of ืื™ืŸ ืงื˜ื’ื•ืจ ื ืขืฉื” ืกื ื™ื’ื•ืจ does not apply, because, as the Toldos Yaakov Yosef teaches, when a person learns Torah he transforms his nega tzaraas, for his entire metzius has changed.

Severe Consequences for the Missed Opportunity

During this period between Pesach and Shavuos, we conduct ourselves with a certain level of aveilus โ€” no weddings, no music, no haircuts โ€” because the 24,000 talmidim of R’ Akiva died at this time of the year. This loss was such a tragic event that for all generations Klal Yisrael has to be aware of it, recognizing that these people representing the existence of Torah in Klal Yisrael. The Gemara states that the entire Torah world was desolate and forlorn โ€” ื•ื”ื™ื” ื”ืขื•ืœื ืฉืžื โ€” until R’ Akiva miraculously managed to find five new talmidim and rebuild the entire Torah.

All these 24,000 talmidim were wiped out, says the Gemara, ืฉืœื ื ื”ื’ื• ื›ื‘ื•ื“ ื–ื” ื‘ื–ื”.

While we are certainly required to show respect to one another and treat others with dignity and honor, was this deficiency so severe as to warrant the death of all these great talmidim? Was their wrongdoing so serious that it should have caused a calamity of such magnitude that itโ€™s remembered for all generations? And, if yes, why did they die specifically between Pesach and Shavuos?

R’ Shlomo Alkabetz addresses this issue in his sefer Beis HaLevi, and I will try to convey his ideas in my own words.

The Torah was given to us to change us. Indeed, as we explained above, the Torah changes a person, to the extent that the principle of ืื™ืŸ ืงื˜ื’ื•ืจ ื ืขืฉื” ืกื ื™ื’ื•ืจ does not apply, and he can use his mouth to atone for the lashon hara he spoke. The same is true for all the Torah that we learn. The Gemara (Shabbos 88b) teaches that when Moshe Rabbeinu went up to Shomayim to take the luchos, the malachim complained: ืžื” ืœื™ืœื•ื“ ืืฉื” ื‘ื™ื ื™ื ื•? How can a lowly human being, who is born from a father and a mother and possesses a yetzer hara, come to take the Torah? What a disgrace to the Torah! The Torah is holy, they argued, and it belongs with holy celestial beings!

Hakadosh Baruch Hu answered: ืœืงื‘ืœ ืชื•ืจื” ื”ื•ื ื‘ื โ€” Moshe Rabbeinu has come to receive the Torah. R’ Chaim Volozhiner wonders, thatโ€™s not an answer to the question โ€” thatโ€™s the kasha itself! The malachim knew that Moshe had come to take the Torah, and they protested that he has no right to take it. So how did Hashemโ€™s response address their complaint?

R’ Chaim Volozhiner explains that with the words ืœืงื‘ืœ ืชื•ืจื” ื”ื•ื ื‘ื, Hakadosh Baruch Hu was conveying that Torah is not merely an academic pursuit or a science โ€” Torah sparks a metamorphosis in a person. The point of Mosheโ€™s coming to Shomayim was ืœืงื‘ืœ โ€” to accept the Torah in a way thatโ€™s going to change a person and make him worthy of bringing kavod to the Torah, raising him to the level of a malach. This is contrary to the understanding of the malachim that only they are entitled to learn Torah. If a person approaches Torah with the intention of being mekabel it, then he becomes similar to a malach.

Moshe Rabbeinu compares Torah to rain, which causes vegetation to grow, as he says: ื™ึทืขึฒืจึนืฃ ื›ึผึทืžึผึธื˜ึธืจ ืœึดืงึฐื—ึดื™. The Torah brings about a complete change in a person, fostering growth in his characteristics and personality.

This explains why R’ Yosef would celebrate on Shavuos and declare: ืื™ ืœื ื”ืื™ ื™ื•ืžื ื“ืงื ื’ืจื™ื, ื›ืžื” ื™ื•ืกืฃ ืื™ื›ื ื‘ืฉื•ืงื โ€” if not for the great day of Kabbalas HaTorah, I would be no different from the many other people in the street called Yosef. But because I learn Torah, I became uplifted and elevated, and I was transformed from a simple Yosef to Rav Yosef.

The word โ€œTorah,โ€ says the Zohar Hakadosh, comes from the lashon of horaah, indicating that it teaches a person how to become a different person. The Alshich, on Tehillim, explains that Emes and Shalom said that Hakadosh Baruch Hu should not create mankind, because people are a contradiction to Emes and Shalom. Hashemโ€™s answer was: ื”’ ืขึนื– ืœึฐืขึทืžึผื•ึน ื™ึดืชึผึตืŸ ื”’ ื™ึฐื‘ึธืจึตืšึฐ ืึถืช ืขึทืžึผื•ึน ื‘ึทืฉึผืึธืœื•ึนื โ€” He is giving us the Torah, and the Torah will change us so that we will become people of Emes and Shalom. Such is the power of Torah.

The Beis HaLevi explains that when the Gemara says that the talmidim of R’ Akiva ืœื ื ื”ื’ื• ื›ื‘ื•ื“ ื–ื” ื‘ื–ื”, it means they didnโ€™t allow the Torah to change their whole metzius, so they were learning Torah without the Torah having the effect of ืœืงื‘ืœ ืชื•ืจื” ื”ื•ื ื‘ื. That is a great kitrug. We know from the Gemara that every year on Shavuos the Torah is given to us anew, and we experience a new Kabbalas HaTorah. Therefore, as Klal Yisrael approaches Shavuos each year, we must do so with the mindset that we are coming ืœืงื‘ืœ ืชื•ืจื”, that we want the Torah to change us. If itโ€™s expected that a person who learns Torah should respect others, then when the talmidim of R’ Akiva failed to accord one another the proper honor, then there was a great kitrug. โ€œI gave you the opportunity,โ€ Hashem essentially said. โ€œI gave you the seven weeks from Pesach to Shavuos to prepare yourself for a real Kabbalas HaTorah, which is available every year on Shavuos, and you didnโ€™t do that; you didnโ€™t even have an interest in doing that โ€” ืœื ื ื”ื’ื• ื›ื‘ื•ื“ ื–ื” ื‘ื–ื”.โ€ Therefore, the opportune time between Pesach and Shavuos turned into a time of din, a time of kitrug, and thatโ€™s why they deserve to die โ€” because they did not utilize the opportunity that was given to them between Pesach and Shavuos.

Time to Change!

Regarding the Mishnahโ€™s statement: ื”ื™ื•ื ืงืฆืจ ื•ื”ืžืœืื›ื” ืžืจื•ื‘ื”, the meforshim wonder, which is the melachah merubah referred to here?

Melachah, as in the 39 melachos of Shabbos, entails making a change in something: when a person is choreish, or zoreiโ€™a, or kotzeir, he effects a significant change. When Chazal say ื”ื™ื•ื ืงืฆืจ ื•ื”ืžืœืื›ื” ืžืจื•ื‘ื”, they are referring to the melachah we are required to do, and thatโ€™s to recreate ourselves from being simple people with a big yetzer hara, by overcoming our yetzer hara and bad middos and becoming new people.

On Pesach we bring the Korban Haโ€™omer, which is made of barley, while on Shavuos we bring the Korban Shtei Halechem, which is made of wheat. The Alshich, on Parashas Emor, teaches that this is because every one of us is born with animalistic tendencies, and the work of the seven weeks of the Omer is to improve our middos and overcome our natural inclination to act like an animal. We are meant to go from being like an animal, which eats barley, to a person, who eats wheat, and make ourselves worthy of Kabbalas HaTorah. This change from barley to wheat brings with it another change โ€” when we bring the Korban Haโ€™omer, the new crops are permitted only for humans to eat, while when we bring the Shtei Halechem, the new crop becomes ืจืื•ื™ ืœื’ื‘ื•ื” and may be brought on the mizbeiโ€™ach.

Whatโ€™s the difference between a beheimah and an adam? A beheimah thinks only about itself โ€” โ€œI want to walk, I want to eatโ€ โ€” and he tramples on the rest of the world. What distinguishes an adam is that he thinks about other people, and controls himself for the benefit of somebody else.

This is the time when we are charged with the mitzvah of changing ourselves from beheimah to adam. Itโ€™s the time of ื”’ ืขึนื– ืœึฐืขึทืžึผื•ึน ื™ึดืชึผึตืŸ ื”’ ื™ึฐื‘ึธืจึตืšึฐ ืึถืช ืขึทืžึผื•ึน ื‘ึทืฉึผืึธืœื•ึนื, when thereโ€™s a special siyatta dโ€™Shmaya, as Hakadosh Baruch Hu is out to help us to prepare for Shavuos so that we can experience the new Kabbalas HaTorah of this year on a high madreigah. But if this time is not utilized productively, and chas vโ€™shalom the opportunity is missed, the consequence is the fate suffered by Rโ€™ Akivaโ€™s talmidim.

May we be zocheh to use this time well, so that we can truly become ืจืื•ื™ ืœื’ื‘ื•ื”, and may we be able to change ourselves through coming ืœืงื‘ืœ ืชื•ืจื” so that we are no longer merely ื™ืœื•ื“ ืืฉื”, but rather transformed through the effect of ื™ึทืขึฒืจึนืฃ ื›ึผึทืžึผึธื˜ึธืจ ืœึดืงึฐื—ึดื™ that the Torah should provide. By utilizing the potential of the Torah to make us into new people, we should be zocheh bโ€™karov to the real Kabbalas HaTorah on the great day of Shavuos, which is just around the corner.
