When Hakadosh Baruch Hu comes to Moshe Rabbeinu and asks him to be the shliach to take Klal Yisrael out of Mitzrayim, Moshe Rabbeinu responds, ื•ึฐื”ึตืŸ ืœึนื ื™ึทืึฒืžึดื™ื ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ื•ึฐืœึนื ื™ึดืฉึฐืืžึฐืขื•ึผ ื‘ึฐึผืงึนืœึดื™ ื›ึดึผื™ ื™ึนืืžึฐืจื•ึผ ืœึนื ื ึดืจึฐืึธื” ืึตืœึถื™ืšึธ ื”’ โ€” Klal Yisrael is not going to believe me. They wonโ€™t believe that the Eibishter came to me and that He is going to redeem them.

Now, this was a terrible cheit on Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s part. In response to his argument that Klal Yisrael wonโ€™t believe him, Hakadosh Baruch Hu gives him three wondrous signs to show Klal Yisrael, through which they will indeed believe โ€” but each of these mofsim was really a punishment for Moshe Rabbeinu himself.

The first sign, in which the matteh turned into a snake, was a hint that Moshe Rabbeinu had embraced the โ€œoccupationโ€ of the nachash, who spoke lashon hara during the incident of Adam HaRishonโ€™s cheit. The second, Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s hand turning white from tzaraโ€™as, hinted that Moshe Rabbeinu had falsely suspected Klal Yisrael of not being ma’aminim, as Chazal teach that ื”ื—ื•ืฉื“ ื‘ื›ืฉืจื™ื ืœื•ืงื” ื‘ื’ื•ืคื•. Not only was Moshe Rabbeinu physically afflicted, but he was afflicted specifically with tzaraโ€™as, which is the punishment for lashon hara.

In the third mofes, Moshe Rabbeinu took water and it turned to blood. Chazal tell us that this hinted to the future cheit of Moshe Rabbeinu at Mei Merivah, where he failed to withstand the nisayon he faced and therefore was barred from entering Eretz Yisrael. So this mofes indicated that Moshe Rabbeinu would ultimately be punished due to an incident involving water.

We can understand the justice of the first two signs, which came to castigate Moshe for speaking badly of Klal Yisrael. But why was there a need to hint that Moshe Rabbeinu would not manage to complete his mission of bringing Klal Yisrael into Eretz Yisrael?

The answer is that because he spoke badly of Klal Yisrael, using the words ื•ึฐื”ึตืŸ ืœึนื ื™ึทืึฒืžึดื™ื ื•ึผ ืœึดื™, he would ultimately come to sin in a similar manner, as Hashem chastised him: ื™ึทืขึทืŸ ืœึนื ื”ึถืึฑืžึทื ึฐืชึถึผื ื‘ึดึผื™.

โ€œYou say that Klal Yisrael lack emunah?โ€ the Eibishter was telling Moshe. โ€œWhere is your own emunah?โ€

This was a powerful condemnation.

Now, the truth was that Klal Yisrael were in a very low state at this point. In this parshah, after Dasan and Aviram slandered Moshe Rabbeinu, he declares, ืึธื›ึตืŸ ื ื•ึนื“ึทืข ื”ึทื“ึธึผื‘ึธืจ โ€” now I know why Klal Yisrael are still in galus and are not deserving of geulah.

Similarly, at the time of Krias Yam Suf a severe accusation was leveled against Klal Yisrael, claiming that they were no less idolatrous than the Mitzrim: ื”ืœืœื• ืขื•ื‘ื“ื™ ืขื‘ื•ื“ื” ื–ืจื” ื•ื”ืœืœื• ืขื•ื‘ื“ื™ ืขื‘ื•ื“ื” ื–ืจื”. Furthermore, Chazal tell us that Hakadosh Baruch Hu had to accelerate the end of the galus because Klal Yisrael were already at the forty-ninth level of impurity.

Yet, at the end of this parshah, Moshe Rabbeinu is confronted by the shotrim, who tell him ื™ึตืจึถื ื”’ ืขึฒืœึตื™ื›ึถื ื•ึฐื™ึดืฉึฐืืคึนึผื˜ ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดื‘ึฐืึทืฉึฐืืชึถึผื ืึถืช ืจึตื™ื—ึตื ื•ึผ ื‘ึฐึผืขึตื™ื ึตื™ ืคึทืจึฐืขึนื” ื•ึผื‘ึฐืขึตื™ื ึตื™ ืขึฒื‘ึธื“ึธื™ื•. They came with a grievance against Moshe Rabbeinu that not only had he not brought the geulah, but he had made things worse. Considering the seemingly lowly state of Klal Yisrael at that time, what criticism could they have had against Moshe Rabbeinu? And why did he deserve such a terrible punishment for uttering the words ื•ึฐื”ึตืŸ ืœึนื ื™ึทืึฒืžึดื™ื ื•ึผ ืœึดื™ ?

What Are Children of Believers?

Returning to Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s rebuke of Moshe Rabbeinu, He responds to Mosheโ€™s claim that Klal Yisrael would not believe him by telling him that Klal Yisrael are maโ€™aminim bnei maโ€™aminim. What does this phrase mean? We can understand what maโ€™aminim are; believers are those who worked on emunah through their own avodah. But what is the significance of being bnei maโ€™aminim, children of believers?

We can explain this through a beautiful insight of the Sefer HaChaim, written by the brother of the Maharal. The navi Yechezkel gives mussar to Klal Yisrael: ื•ึฐื”ึธืขึนืœึธื” ืขึทืœ ืจื•ึผื—ึฒื›ึถื ื”ึธื™ื•ึน ืœึนื ืชึดื”ึฐื™ึถื” ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืึทืชึถึผื ืึนืžึฐืจึดื™ื ื ึดื”ึฐื™ึถื” ื›ึทื’ึผื•ึนื™ึดื ื›ึฐึผืžึดืฉึฐืืคึฐึผื—ื•ึนืช ื”ึธืึฒืจึธืฆื•ึนืช ืœึฐืฉึธืืจึตืช ืขึตืฅ ื•ึธืึธื‘ึถืŸ. He is saying, โ€œDo you think you can just abandon the Ribbono Shel Olam and become like any other nation? What youโ€™re thinking and dreaming about, itโ€™s not going to be. Rather, if you try to leave Hashem, the end result will be that He will rule over you with an iron fist and with outpoured wrath: ืึดื ืœึนื ื‘ึฐึผื™ึธื“ ื—ึฒื–ึธืงึธื” ื•ึผื‘ึดื–ึฐืจื•ึนืขึท ื ึฐื˜ื•ึผื™ึธื” ื•ึผื‘ึฐื—ึตืžึธื” ืฉึฐืืคื•ึผื›ึธื” ืึถืžึฐืœื•ึนืšึฐ ืขึฒืœึตื™ื›ึถื.โ€

Now, the phrase ืึถืžึฐืœื•ึนืšึฐ ืขึฒืœึตื™ื›ึถื invites a major question. We know that a melech is a king who rules with the consent of the people, whereas a moshel is a dictator who imposes his reign on the populace. When the nation wants to coronate the king, the king becomes a melech, as expressed in the principle ืื™ืŸ ืžืœืš ื‘ืœื ืขื, and in the words we say in davening, ื•ึผืžึทืœึฐื›ื•ึผืชื•ึน ื‘ึผึฐืจึธืฆื•ึนืŸ ืงึดื‘ึผึฐืœื•ึผ ืขึฒืœึตื™ื”ึถื; a melech always leads bโ€™ratzon.

How, then, can Hakadosh Baruch Hu declare that He is going to be Klal Yisraelโ€™s melech with an iron fist and outpoured wrath? If He is imposing His rule on them, shouldnโ€™t He say, emshol aleichem?

The Sefer HaChaim explains that Hakadosh Baruch Hu knows that Klal Yisrael are maโ€™aminim bnei maโ€™aminim. Bnei maโ€™aminim means that this middah of having emunah in the Ribbono Shel Olam is not a result of our own avodah. We can always work to enhance it, but itโ€™s essentially part of our genetic makeup. We inherit emunah in the zechus of the Avos HaKedoshim. Thanks to Avraham Avinuโ€™s emunah, every Yid has within him the power of emunah. Even if he hasnโ€™t worked on it, he has it because of the Avos.

If so, continues the Sefer HaChaim, the Eibishter tells Klal Yisrael, โ€œIf you try to leave Me, itโ€™s not going to work. Iโ€™m going to bring upon you โ€” Rachmana litzlan โ€” terrible punishments. But those punishments are going to remove all the outside layers of darkness, cheit, and gaโ€™avah, and the innate, pure emunah peshutah of a Yid is going to shine through. And through the punishments youโ€™re going to be mekabel Me as a melech, because once a Yid has hachnaโ€™ah, his true essence shines through.โ€

Thatโ€™s the meaning of maโ€™aminim bnei maโ€™aminim: Every Yid has emunah inside him.

Tunnel Kiruv

Many varied approaches are utilized in kiruv rechokim. Some hold Shabbos weekends, some make parties, some give shiurim, and some do other things. The very last approach we might think of for being mekarev someone would be to hold him in a tunnel for 700 days. Yet we witnessed this extraordinary phenomenon ourselves recently: Yidden who were so, so far away from the Ribbono Shel Olam emerged after almost two years of captivity with emunah in the Ribbono Shel Olam, precisely as a result of the tzaros they endured. The hachnaโ€™ah they experienced caused the true metzius of a Yid to shine through.

This is Klal Yisrael, maโ€™aminim bnei maโ€™aminim.

The criticism the Eibeshter expressed to Moshe Rabbeinu was: Believe in Klal Yisrael! Even if, on the surface, they are worshipping avodah zarah and are mired in the 49 shaโ€™arei tumah, under all those layers of cheit they still possess the emunah that they inherited from Avraham Avinu.

Moshe Rabbeinu was going to be the manhig, and his role was to bring out this emunah, causing Klal Yisrael to shine. But when he claimed that Klal Yisrael would not believe him, he invited censure upon himself: How can you be the manhig if you donโ€™t believe in Klal Yisrael?

Listen to a moraโ€™dike pshat from the Moshav Zekeinim MiBaโ€™alei HaTosafos on Parshas Korach. How, he wonders, did Dasan and Aviram leave Mitzrayim? The reshaโ€™im among Klal Yisrael died during the days of choshech, so why did they get out? The Baโ€™alei HaTosafos answer that the only Yidden who died were those who didnโ€™t believe there was going to be a Yetzias Mitzrayim. Dasan and Aviram, with all their flaws, did believe in the geulah, and thatโ€™s how they merited to leave.

What does this have to do with us? Certainly, we should learn to always look favorably upon other people, but we also have to look within ourselves and perform a cheshbon hanefesh: Do I possess genuine emunah? Is the emunah I display in various segulos the same as my emunah in the yud gimmel ikarim, in the Eibishter Himself?

Working on our emunah is not something we have to travel far to achieve, since every Yid already has inside him this trait of maโ€™aminim bnei maโ€™aminim.

Through the power of our emunah, we should be zocheh to the geulah shleimah.
