Climbing the Fifty Levels

Parashas Shemini/ Sefiras Haomer

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz

We have just entered the period of Sefiras Haโ€™omer.

Letโ€™s examine the mitzvah a little bit, to understand what weโ€™re counting and why.

On a basic level, we start counting from the time the korban haโ€™omer was brought in the Beis HaMikdash.

The question is why weโ€™re counting from that point. We already brought the korban haโ€™omer โ€” why do we have to count up from that event?

We might suggest an explanation based on a concept from the Maharal, which is also a Maharsha in Rosh Hashanah (16). They both note that thereโ€™s a difference between the menachos brought on Pesach and on Shavous: The korban haโ€™omer brought on Pesach is from the new crop of barley, which is animal food; the Torah teaches that because a sotah acted in an animalistic manner, her korban is made of animal food. The shtei halechem that is brought on Shavuos is from the new crop of wheat, which is eaten by humans.

The Maharal and Maharsha explain that this difference alludes to the avodah that bridges one Yom Tov and the other.

When we left Mitzrayim, we were on the madreigah of animals, on the precipice of the fiftieth shaar hatumah, as the Zohar teaches. The Rokeโ€™iach teaches that the fifty days from when we begin counting the omer until we reach Shavuos night correspond to the fifty levels of kedushah. The avodah is to climb out of the fiftieth level of tumah and reach the fiftieth shaar of kedushah.

The Maharsha and the Maharal explain that this is akin to being transformed from animal to human. At the end of this process, we can become a mentch, an adam who is adameh lโ€™elyon โ€” similar to the One Above โ€” by reaching the fiftieth level of kedushah.

Based on the Maharsha and the Maharal, we can suggest that this is why weโ€™re counting up from the omer. When we count two days from the omer, weโ€™re saying that weโ€™ve had the opportunity to move two levels away from being an animal. When we count five days, weโ€™re five levels above living life like animals and closer to living in a manner that is adameh lโ€™elyon.

This is what we can accomplish during Sefiras Ha’omer.

Double Trouble of an Aveirah

The seforim hakedoshim cite a tremendous chiddush from the Zohar, who writes that when a person does an aveirah, aside from the aveirah itself, which is a terrible thing, it also makes the person see himself as a lowly being. He starts to think of himself as someone who doesnโ€™t have enough kochos or enough kedushah, which causes him to lower his standards overall. He no longer has the same goals in life, because he doesnโ€™t feel like he can make much of himself.

When you ask people, โ€œWhat are your goals in life?โ€ many will answer that they want to earn enough money or live in a comfortable house. Few will answer, โ€œMy goal in life is to become a special person. I want to work on my middos, on my Torah, on my avodas Hashem.โ€

Why donโ€™t more people talk that way? Because they were affected by the tumah of aveiros, and their goals and outlook on life have changed. The deeper a person sinks into the levels of tumah, the less his goals will be focused on excelling in ruchniyus and on his true purpose in this world.

The Rambam (Moreh Nevuchim) writes that sometimes you have an animal who happens to take the form of a human. He explains that this type of personโ€™s entire life is about eating, drinking, indulging in physicality, getting angry at others, fighting with othersโ€ฆ

This is not a human way of life. Animals can also engage in all those pursuits. They can also relax and take it easy.

We meet people like this sometimes, and something about them just doesnโ€™t sit well with us. The way they act, the way they talk โ€” theyโ€™re always screaming โ€” it looks like one Yerushalmi cat fighting with another outside. Yerushalmi cats scream very loud, we hear them all the way upstairs when they are fighting on the street. And then you hear a person screaming that way and you wonder, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you act in a respectful way? Act with dignity, deal with people with dignity, because thatโ€™s what makes you human!โ€

You hear about people who stole from others. Animals steal food from one another. One cat sees that another has something it wants, and it canโ€™t control itself, it just grabs it. A person who canโ€™t control himself and takes things that belong to others is on the same level.

There are people who use their mouths to hurt people, to destroy reputations, to swallow people alive โ€” just like an animal devours its prey.

Then there are people who speak to others in a dignified way, and deal with others in a dignified way. These are just mechubadike people.

Some people just fill their lives with shtuyos, reading a book all night shelo haya velo nivra, watching a movie shelo haya velo nivra. Compare that with a talmid chacham who gives body and soul to learn another word of Torah, and then another. Thatโ€™s a mentch, a person.

Sefiras Ha’omer is a time to ponder our own standing in life and try to change who we are, a little at a time. We have to go into it with the mindset that we want to become a bit more of a mentch, more of a ben Torah. Each day is another opportunity, another chance to lift yourself up and climb higher.

Do a Little, Gain a Lot

At the end of this weekโ€™s parshah, the passuk says: ื•ึฐืœึนื ืชึดื˜ึทึผืžึฐึผืื•ึผ ื‘ึธึผื”ึถื ื•ึฐื ึดื˜ึฐืžึตืชึถื ื‘ึธึผื. If you become tamei from aveiros, they fill your heart with tumah. But the Gemara (Yoma 39) adds that if a person is metamei himself a little, from Heaven they are metamei him a lot.

When a person gets used to the tumah, he becomes accustomed to that way of life. Suddenly, it doesnโ€™t even seem bad to him; it seems like a great way to live. A personโ€™s heart becomes metumtam, it becomes blocked by tumah, and he is filled with foolishness. A person can end up doing things that are silly and not catch himself because heโ€™s so sold on aveiros.

But the Torah also tells us the positive flipside of this equation: ื•ึฐื”ึดืชึฐืงึทื“ึดึผืฉึฐืืชึถึผื ื•ึดื”ึฐื™ึดื™ืชึถื ืงึฐื“ึนืฉึดืื™ื. If a person is mekadesh himself a little bit, says the same Gemara, from Heaven they are mekadesh him a lot.

It doesnโ€™t take as much work as we think it does โ€“ all we have to do is a little bit, and HaKadosh Baruch Hu does the rest for us.

The Chofetz Chaim offered a mashal based on a new invention in his era, the elevator. He noted that if a person goes to a big city and sees a tall building, he thinks to himself, โ€œHow am I going to get all the way to the top floor?โ€ But the trick is that you just have to get into the elevator and press the button, and you can fly all the way up to the top in seconds.

Ruchniyus works the same way, said the Chofetz Chaim. We are mekadesh ourselves a little bit โ€“ investing a little more effort into our learning, a little more effort in speaking to people in a respectful way, dealing with our wives, and children, and friends in a proper way โ€“ and we fulfill ื•ึฐื”ึดืชึฐืงึทื“ึดึผืฉึฐืืชึถึผื, and then we can reach tremendous heights.

The Yidden went from the 49th level of tumah to the 49th level of kedushah in fifty days. You can change your life in these fifty days, which are so mesugal for change.

There are advertisements that offer to help you drop a tremendous amount of weight in a month if you follow their system. We can do the same with ruchniyus. In one fifty-day period, you can get rid of so much weight of tumah from your appetite, and add so much kedushah.

And the key to all this growth is to focus on what comes at the end of this period: Mattan Torah on Shavuos. Whether itโ€™s limud haTorah, or valuing a Torah lifestyle over gashmiyus, itโ€™s a way of connecting with that fiftieth day. This is what lifts a person out of the animalistic level of Mitzrayim and places him on the level of an adam, an adameh lโ€™elyon, bringing him closer to Hashem and helping him reach fulfillment.

May Hashem help us all to use this time well, to grow and be uplifted during this Sefiras Ha’omer, so that weโ€™ll all reach the fiftieth level of kedushah on Shavuos.

Lifting yourself up to a higher level and changing yourself into a real human โ€” thatโ€™s when youโ€™re worthy of the title
