Emes Powers Success

Parashas Shemini 5778

Hagaon Harav Meir Tzvi Shpitzer Shlita

In Parashas Shemini we read the narrative of the korbanos that Aharon brought on the day of his aninus, and a discussion between Moshe and Aharon about whether it was correct that Aharonโ€™s sons had burned the korban rather than eating it. Moshe was displeased that they had done so, but Aharon told him that he thought what they had done was correct. And then the passuk says: ื•ึทื™ึผึดืฉืึฐืžึทืข ืžืฉืึถื” ื•ึทื™ึผึดื™ื˜ึทื‘ ื‘ึผึฐืขึตื™ื ึธื™ื•, Moshe heard what Aharon said and he saw that Aharon was correct.

The Gemara (Zevachim 101) teaches that Moshe had heard this halachah from Hashem and had forgotten it, and when Aharon explained his reasoning Moshe remembered that this is what Hashem had told him. The Gemara states that Moshe Rabbeinu admitted his mistake and was not embarrassed; he didnโ€™t try to wiggle out and say, โ€œI didnโ€™t hear this halachahโ€ โ€“ rather, he said โ€œI heard it and I forgot it.โ€

The Midrash, in Vayikra Rabbah, adds that not only did Moshe admit this mistake, he announced to everyone in Klal Yisrael that Aharon was correct and he was wrong, and that he had known the halachah but had forgotten it. Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz, in Sichos Mussar, highlights the greatness of what Moshe Rabbeinu did. Moshe could have reasoned that publicly admitting that he had forgotten the halachah would have caused a chillul Hashem, but he feared that this logic might be stemming from personal negius, and he therefore did not rely on his own logic but rather admitted the truth to everyone.

Furthermore, say the Netziv in Meishiv Davar, the reason Moshe Rabbeinu did this, and the reason this was recorded in the Torah, is to teach us that this is the correct way for a rav to behave. If he made a mistake or forgot something, he should admit it, and he should publicize the fact that he made a mistake and not worry about the possible negative repercussions.

Why is this middah of admitting to the truth so important, both for Moshe Rabbeinu and for every rav and rosh yeshiva? Because, as the Gemara tells us in Shabbos: ื—ื•ืชืžื• ืฉืœ ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื”ื•ื ืืžืช โ€“ Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s signature is emes. If we want to be zocheh to learn and understand Hashemโ€™s Torah, then we have to be particularly careful in the halachos of ืžึดื“ึผึฐื‘ึทืจ ืฉืึถืงึถืจ ืชึผึดืจึฐื—ึธืง, and never say a lie or even imply a lie.

In a similar vein, Rav Chaim Vital offers a profound explanation of the passuk in Parashas Mattos: ืœึนื ื™ึทื—ึตืœ ื“ึผึฐื‘ึธืจื•ึน ื›ึผึฐื›ึธืœ ื”ึทื™ึผึนืฆึตื ืžึดืคึผึดื™ื• ื™ึทืขึฒืฉื‚ึถื”. He says that a person who is careful never to veer from the truth, and keeps his word and admits the truth, merits that Hakadosh Baruch Hu will answer his prayers and fulfill his requests; because he fulfills ืœึนื ื™ึทื—ึตืœ ื“ึผึฐื‘ึธืจื•ึน, he merits that ื›ึผึฐื›ึธืœ ื”ึทื™ึผึนืฆึตื ืžึดืคึผึดื™ื• ื™ึทืขึฒืฉื‚ึถื”. Again, because ื—ื•ืชืžื• ืฉืœ ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื”ื•ื ืืžืช.

Every time a person withstands a nisayon in emes and speaks the truth, says Rav Chaim Voloziner in Nefesh Hachaim, he creates a malach of emes, and that malach will continue to help him along in his path of emes.

No Deviations

The Gemara relates that the wife of the amora Rav, the talmid of Rabbeinu Hakadosh, unfortunately wasnโ€™t so kind to him. She went out of her way to make his life miserable, and would deliberately not prepare him the food that he requested. She would ask him what meal he wanted, and if he said hot, she gave him cold; if he said fleishigs she made milchigs. This went on year after year.

When their children grew up, their son understood what was going on at home and one day he offered to be the messenger between his parents. He came to his father and said, โ€œMommy wants to know what would you like to eat tonight.โ€ When Rav responded that he wanted a hot fleishig meal, the boy went and told his mother that his father wanted a cold milchig meal. Obviously, she made a hot fleishig meal. For a change, Rav got the meal that he had asked for.

For a while, Rav received the meals he requested. This puzzled him, and he asked his son, โ€œWhat happened that your mother has changed so dramatically and now provides exactly what I ask for?โ€

The meforshim explain that although Rav would have been allowed to lie and tell his wife he wanted the opposite of his actual menu choice in this situation โ€“ lโ€™toeles, for darkei shalom โ€“ he was nevertheless careful to say only the truth, because he wanted to succeed in his Torah learning, and to do that he had to identify with the signature of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, which is emes. Therefore, Rav wouldnโ€™t allow an untruth to pass through his lips, even if it was permitted.

The meforshim wonder, however, why Rav didnโ€™t deduce that his son was switching his daily request when reporting it to his wife. Granted, he wasnโ€™t prepared to utter a lie himself, but why did he assume that if he was receiving the meals he had requested it must mean that his wife changed?

Rav Chaim Kanievsky explains that Rav was so far removed from sheker that the possibility of either he or his son modifying his request didnโ€™t even occur to him. In his mind, if you ask for something, you say the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. He was so connected to emes that he couldnโ€™t fathom that that his son could have possibly switched his request.

The Sefer Hachinuch writes that every mitzvah has its own segulah for life, happiness, prosperity, parnassah โ€“ all the different blessings we desire. But all these blessings are contingent upon our saying the emes. When a person veers from the emes, he loses all the brachos that Hashem decreed for him. Thatโ€™s because Hashemโ€™s signature is emes, and everything He bestows upon us is with that chosam of emes. But when a person doesnโ€™t speak the truth, he creates malachim who speak sheker. And if you create malachim who speak sheker, then no amount of truth and brachah from Hakadosh Baruch Hu will ever come your way.

Thatโ€™s why Moshe Rabbeinu was so careful in the realm of emes, to the extent that when he made a mistake he announced it to everyone in Klal Yisrael. And this is the way to succeed in Torah, as the Meishiv Davar and Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz say.

For Yaakov Avinu, whose middah was Torah and emes, it was exceedingly difficult to utter a lie, even when he was told through ruach hakodesh that he had to. In fact, the Midrash teaches us that when he came to Yitzchak and he had to lie, he lost control of his bodily functions. He felt so weak and was so afraid to say a lie that he needed two malachim to hold him up, one on each side.

Success in Torah requires the absolute emes in every situation. When Rav Aharon Kotler was building his yeshiva and kollel, he had to print receipt books for donations, and each receipt had a picture of the yeshiva on it. But the original yeshiva building did not look all that beautiful, and the people in the office who created the receipt books understood that this was not good advertising for the yeshiva. They therefore used trick photography to place a few trees in front of the yeshiva to cover the worst of the building. When they brought these receipt books to Rav Aharon, however, he refused to use them, explaining that you canโ€™t build Torah with something that isnโ€™t a hundred percent emes.

Hashem Fulfills His Promise

On the Seder night, we recall that Hakadosh Baruch Hu promised, in Bris Bein Habesarim, to take us out of Mitzrayim, as we say: ื‘ึผึธืจื•ึผืšึฐ ืฉืื•ึนืžึตืจ ื”ึทื‘ึฐื˜ึธื—ึธืชื•ึน ืœึฐื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ. We would have thought that the reason for the Bris Bein Habesarim was to make Avraham Avinu happy, and that we should feel guaranteed throughout the galus that Hakadosh Baruch Hu was going to take us out. But from the expression ื‘ึผึธืจื•ึผืšึฐ ืฉืื•ึนืžึตืจ ื”ึทื‘ึฐื˜ึธื—ึธืชื•ึน ืœึฐื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ it would seem that if not for the fact that Hakadosh Baruch Hu had made the promise, He wouldnโ€™t have taken us out of Mitzrayim. Rav Elyashiv explains in his Haggadah that Klal Yisrael sank so low in Mitzrayim and did so many aveiros that it was really a disgrace for Hakadosh Baruch Hu that we should be the am hanivchar and that He would take out and give the Torah. He did so only because He promised. Even though we were on the forty-ninth level of tumah, and even though it was beneath His dignity to take us as the chosen nation, because He promised, he had to be ืฉืื•ึนืžึตืจ ื”ึทื‘ึฐื˜ึธื—ึธืชื•ึน โ€“ since His signature is emes.

Thatโ€™s why Moshe Rabbeinu publicized to everyone that he made a mistake, and this is the middah of emes that brings hatzlachah in Torah throughout the generations.
