Obstacles to Avodas Hashem?

Harav Hagaon Rav Binyomin Cohen

See that I am placing before you today bracha and klalla (ื“ื‘ืจื™ื ื™”ื:ื›”ื•). The ืชื•ืจื” is making a statement that it is possible for every Yid to do Avodas Hashem. In Kol Eliyahu, the Vilna Gaon points out that there are five possible taโ€™anosโ€”answers, reasons, or excuses a Yid might have to not be able to be successful in doing Avodas Hashem properly. He then explains why each one is not valid.

The Gaon says that the first taโ€™aneh is that a person can say that since I previously made a wrong decision (I chose the wrong thing), I therefore lost my chance to choose good or choose bad. I chose bad already. I donโ€™t have the opportunity anymore. But the Torah is telling us no, this is not the case. ืื ื›ื™ ื ื•ืชืŸ. ื ื•ืชืŸ is a lashon hoveh, I am currently giving you. It does not say ื ืชืชื™, I gave you. I am giving you ื”ื™ื•ื, today, ื‘ืจื›ื” ื•ืงืœืœื”. Every single day a person constantly has the opportunity to choose between ื‘ืจื›ื” ื•ืงืœืœื”. Because Hashem is ื ื•ืชืŸ. Even though in the past, the person might not have chosen the right thing, he might have chosen bad, he always has a new chance. ื ื•ืชืŸ.

The second taโ€™aneh a person can say is that yes, it is true that today I have another chance because I get a new chance every day. So Iโ€™ll choose ื‘ืจื›ื”. But in the past, I chose the bad; I chose ืงืœืœื” so I have baggage. What does it help me to choose good today if I am carrying a lot of bad things from the past? To address that point, the Torah tells us, ื”ื™ื•ื. The Vilna Gaon says that a Baal Teshuva is considered to be a kattan who was born anew with a clean slate, without any baggage. ื”ื™ื•ื.

The third taโ€™aneh a person could have is that I was born with a very, very strong inclination for taโ€™aveh and ra called my yetzer hara. I am an exception because I have a special, exceedingly strong yetzer hara. I am not a regular person. Iโ€™m not able to be oveid Hashem properly because I have such a powerful yetzer hara. What does the Torah say about that? ืจืื” ืื ื›ื™. ืื ื›ื™ means I, Hakadosh Baruch Hu. I am here for you. Chazal say ืืœืžืœื ื“’ ืขื•ื–ืจื• ืื™ืŸ ื™ื›ื•ืœ ืœื•, if Hakadoh Baruch Hu is not going to help us fight the yetzer hara, we cannot possibly overcome it our own (ืงื™ื“ื•ืฉื™ืŸ ืœ:). It is true that the yetzer hara is very, very powerful and very, very strong. But Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, โ€œI am here, I am going to help you.โ€ ืื ื›ื™, I am here. Hakadosh Baruch Hu is the kol yachol. And with Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s help, a person could overcome the yetzer hara. So even if a person claims that he has a very strong yetzer hara, which might be true, the answer to that taโ€™aneh is ืื ื›ื™, I am with you. Hakadosh Baruch Hu will be ืขื•ื–ืจื•, therefore, ื™ื›ื•ืœ ืœื•, it is possible for him to overcome the yetzer hara.

The Gaon explains the fourth taโ€™aneh that a person might have as follows. A person can ask how he knows that Torah and mitzvos are really bracha. Perhaps Hakadosh Baruch Hu is giving us the Torah in the manner of many merchants and businessmen who show you their top merchandise. They put their best stock in the window, but the rest is not really good quality. So how do I know that the entire Torah is really bracha? The Torah says about that, ื ื•ืชืŸ ืœืคื ื™ื›ื. Not ืœื›ื, to you, but ืœืคื ื™ื›ื, in front of you. In front of you means that it is all there; there are no hidden products. You can see clearly for yourself that all the Torah is bracha.

The Gaon says that the fifth taโ€™aneh is that a person can say that this whole thing would be very nice if the entire world was full of tzaddikim who are doing the right thing. I want to be like everyone; I want to be a tzaddik too. But when so many people are not withstanding the challenges of the generation, and so many people are not overcoming their nisyonos, why should I be any different? I want to be like them. I donโ€™t want to be different. In reference to that, the Torah says ืจืื”. ืจืื” is in lashon yachid. YOU should see. It does not say ืจืื• in lashon rabbim. The Torah is talking to you, every yachid. Donโ€™t pay attention to what the world is doing or saying.

These are the five yesodos that the Torah is hinting to, corresponding to the five taโ€™anos that a person might have, the reasons and excuses for why he cannot do his Avodas Hashem properly. This passuk is telling us no, it is not true. There is an answer to each of these taโ€™anos.

The Importance of Every Mitzvah

Rav Elya Baruch Finkel, ื–ืฆ”ืœ tells a very powerful story about the Brisker Rav. At the beginning of World War II, a large amount of Yidden ended up in Warsaw. It was Erev Sukkos, and the Brisker Rav was searching for mehudar Brisker hadassim, like he did every year. Rav Menachem Ziemba questioned the Brisker Rav, saying, โ€œIn this matzav of war, bombs are falling, and we are all trying to survive. Isnโ€™t there room to be mekil and rely on hadassim that are kasher mโ€™ikar hadin and not look for extra mehudar hadassim?โ€ The Brisker Rav answered him as follows. If Hakadosh Baruch Hu would personally tell a Yid that even in your matzav of turmoil, I want you to get for Me hadassim mehudarim, the best hadassim, according to all shitos, the Yid would for sure do it, correct?

The Brisker Rav continued and said that in practice, a lot of people donโ€™t feel that such a request was made of them. Why? It might be either because they donโ€™t feel Hakadosh Baruch Hu is talking to them personally. Or it could be that they think there are many mitzvos that a person can do. This is not the only mitzvah, and it is also not the first time Hashem was metzaveh us to do this mitzvah so it is not that special. The mitzvah has been around for many, many years. But the Brisker Rav said that the truth is that a Yid must view every mitzvah in the way described above. That Hakadosh Baruch Hu is talking directly to me, and this is my mitzvah for the first time. I have an opportunity to do it in the best possible way. And that is why I am looking for Brisker hadassim. This entire concept is included in the passuk quoted above. ืจืื” is in lashon yachid. ืื ื›ื™, Hakadosh Baruch Hu is personally speaking to each yachid. ื”ื™ื•ื, today, for the first time.

This Shabbos is Shabbos Mevarchim Chodesh Elul. The month of Elul is a special matanah. The Alter MiKelm used to say ืฉื”ื—ื™ื ื• ื•ืงื™ืžื ื• ื•ื”ื’ื™ืขื ื• ืœื–ืžืŸ ื”ื–ื” (of course, without ืฉื ื•ืžืœื›ื•ืช) on Chodesh Elul. The avodah of Elul encompasses the lessons that the Vilna Gaon teaches us from the passuk we just learned. ืจืื” in lashon yachid is speaking personally to every single yachid, and it also says ืœืคื ื™ื›ื in lashon rabbim. The avodah of Elul is multifaceted. At the same time that we are busy preparing our own personal selves for Yom Hadin by working on mitzvos in bein adam lamakom, we cannot forget that our avodah as being part of the rabbim is also important. We see this in the word Elul, whose rashei teivos stand for ืื™ืฉ ืœืจืขื™ื”ื• ื•ืžืชื ื•ืช ืœืื‘ื™ื•ื ื™ื, which is avodah of bein adam lโ€™chaveiro.

We should all be zoche to a gebentched chodesh and a gebentched Elul zman full of bracha vโ€™hatzlacha.
