Fix the Pnimiyus, Bring Moshiach

Parashas Pinchas

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita

After Pinchas killed Zimri, the passuk says, Regarding the seemingly redundant phrase ื”ึทืžึปึผื›ึถึผื” ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึปื›ึธึผื”, the Ohr Hachaim observes that in truth, as soon as Zimri committed the aveirah he was already deserving of death at the hands of Heaven, in keeping with the principle that reshaโ€™im are already considered dead during their lifetime. Therefore, when Pinchas killed him, he killed a person who was already spiritually dead.

Similarly, regarding the churban habayis, the Gemara (Sanhedrin 96b) teaches that when the goyim entered the heichal and wanted to boast that they had destroyed the Beis Hamikdash, Hakadosh Baruch Hu told them, โ€œYou burned a house that was already burned.โ€ Klal Yisraelโ€™s aveiros had already destroyed the Beis Hamikdash before the goyim came.

This is a big lesson for life. On the outside, it looked as though the Beis Hamikdash was standing, just as Zimri looked as though he was alive and functioning. On the inside, though, there was a destroyed building and a destroyed person.

By way of analogy, before the Surfside disaster, experts were warning that the frame of the building was in disrepair and in danger of collapse, but people disregarded these warnings, thinking that the building looked like a regular, solid building; why should they invest money in fixing something that wasnโ€™t broken? In the end, tragically, it collapsed.

A building may look beautiful on the outside, but if the inside is rotting, it is liable to collapse.

We live in a beautiful generation today, with so much chessed and other good things. But we still donโ€™t have the Beis Hamikdash, and we know that every generation in which the Beis Hamikdash is not rebuilt is considered as though the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed in their days.

So even though on the outside things may appear to be very good, apparently there is work for us to do on the inside.

During the Bayis Sheini period, says the Gemara (Yoma 9), Klal Yisrael did chessed, they learned Torah, and they did avodah. On the outside, they looked very frum; they were always in the beis midrash, they were always davening with great kavanah, they had many chessed organizations โ€” yet inside, in their hearts, sinas chinam lurked, and there was something rotten internally. That hatred caused the churban habayis.

These days of aveilus for the churban are a time to try and fix our pnimiyus.

Becoming Aharonโ€™s Talmid

The Mishnah in Pirkei Avos teaches:

How, a person might wonder, can I be a disciple of Aharon? I wasnโ€™t born like Aharon Hakohen!

But we see from here that every Yid can be a talmid of Aharon. Whoever you are, try to remove yourself from arguments and fighting. There are so many disputes in families, over yerushah matters and the like, and between family members there is so much discord โ€” in shalom bayis, and between parents and children. Now is the time when we can improve this, if we take the time during these Three Weeks to change the way we look at others. This doesnโ€™t just mean talking nicely to them on the outside and then, when theyโ€™re not around, speaking badly of them behind their back and harboring bad feelings towards them. It means really loving peace and pursuing peace, and being maavir al midosav.

The Gemara (Pesachim 113b) says that there are three types of people that Hashem loves, and one of them is someone who is maavir al midosav. Rashi (Rosh Hashanah 17) explains that being maavir al midosav means that a person does not respond in kind to someone who causes him anguish. This is not easy; itโ€™s a high level. In fact, the Gemara there says that if a person does this, all his aveiros are forgiven. Because he is not exacting with people, middah kโ€™neged middah, Hashem is not exacting with him. Who doesnโ€™t want to get rid of their aveiros?

If we think about these ideas and work on them, then we could become the disciples of Aharon. This includes two parts: staying away from machlokes even if other people are acting in ways that are hurtful, and also being ืื•ึนื”ึตื‘ ืึถืช ื”ึทื‘ึฐึผืจึดื™ึผื•ึนืช.

See the Good!

There are so many divisions among Klal Yisrael, and so many different types of people โ€” Sephardim, Ashkenazim, litvish, chassidish, modern, yeshivish โ€” but weโ€™re all Yidden. Weโ€™re surrounded by goyim who hate us so much โ€” how can we not love each other?

Even a goy knows what a Yid does for another Yid.

A goy once put on a yarmulke after his car broke down, and when his friend asked him why, he said, โ€œIf I want someone to stop for me in the street, I wear a yarmulke, and then I know that the Jews will stop for me.โ€

There are so many Yidden with such special, tayereh neshamos. Of course, no one is perfect, but there are so many beautiful people. Letโ€™s increase our ahavas habriyos, saying good things about others, thinking positively about others, and not spreading negative words about them.

Hereโ€™s an example. The Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah made a takanah that Lakewood should put an end to the freezer, in order to help people find shidduchim. One person might respond to this and say, wow, the gedolim really care, theyโ€™re trying to help us. And another person might say, โ€œOh, itโ€™s the fault of the Lakewood yeshiva, for continuing the freezer for so long.โ€ Same situation, two different outlooks, one positive, one negative.

Letโ€™s try to focus, especially during these weeks, on building the Beis Hamikdash by focusing on the good of people. Thereโ€™s so much beauty to every Yid.

At times, a person might think, โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll strengthen my ahavas Yisrael, but Iโ€™m only one person. What difference can I make in rebuilding the Beis Hamikdash? We need all of Klal Yisrael to be nisโ€™chazek!โ€

First of all, if one tzibbur is nisโ€™chazek together, then we can bring the Beis Hamikdash, as the Zohar teaches that if thereโ€™s one group of people who strengthen themselves together and do teshuvah, that could bring the Beis Hamikdash.

One Person is Enough

Really, though, you donโ€™t even need a tzibbur!

In this weekโ€™s parashah, we see that Klal Yisrael sinned with the daughters of Moav and Midian, and one person, Pinchas, got up and appeased Hashemโ€™s wrath. Pinchas was bothered by the chillul Hashem, and he went and performed an act of protest, and his actions removed Hashemโ€™s anger from all of Klal Yisrael.

Similarly, if one person says to Hashem, โ€œI want to help build the Beis Hamikdash! I want to strengthen myself internally in bein adam lachaveiroโ€ โ€” how precious and meaningful that is to Hakadosh Baruch Hu!

We canโ€™t imagine the power of one person strengthening himself.

Rashi, at the end of Parashas Beshalach, says that no metal may be used to construct the mizbeiโ€™ach. Since the purpose of the mizbeiโ€™ach is bring shalom, nothing associated with puranus should be used in its construction, and metal is used for killing purposes. If so, how much greater is the power of a person who works on increasing shalom and ahavas habriyos to banish puranus!

The Mishnah, at the end of Uktzin, ends by declaring, ื”’ ื™ึฐื‘ึธืจึตืšึฐ ืึถืช ืขึทืžึผื•ึน ื‘ึทืฉึธึผืืœื•ึนื. The more we work on increasing shalom, the more Klal Yisrael will be zocheh to beautiful berachos, and shalom, yeshuos, and geulos bโ€™karov.

So letโ€™s be nisโ€™chazek together during these weeks, and show Hashem that we want the Beis Hamikdash back; we miss it. There are so many tzaros in Klal Yisrael, so many sick people, lo aleinu, so many people who need shidduchim, so many emotional issues, so many children going off. Weโ€™re in such a deep galus. Letโ€™s all put in effort to bring Hakadosh Baruch Hu back to all of us, and bโ€™ezras Hashem weโ€™ll bring Him gevaldigeh nachas ruach by trying to me mitalmidav shel Aharon. Then weโ€™ll be zocheh that Hashem will dwell among us again, and the rebuilt Beis Hamikdash will bring so much shalom and berachah to Klal Yisrael.
