Parashas Pekudei

This weekโ€™sย parashahย describes the completion of the building of the Mishkan. The Rishonim, citingย Toras Kohanim, explain that on each of the seven days ofย miluimย Moshe Rabbeinu dismantled the Mishkan and rebuilt it, until the eighth day of theย miluim, when the Mishkan was established for good. Rashi describes this process in Parashas Nasso, in relation to theย passukย ื•ึทื™ึฐื”ึดื™ ื‘ึฐึผื™ื•ึนื ื›ึทึผืœึผื•ึนืช ืžึนืฉึถืื” ืœึฐื”ึธืงึดื™ื ืึถืช ื”ึทืžึดึผืฉึฐืื›ึธึผืŸ.

Many Rishonim ask the following question. At the end of Parashas Tzav, where the Torah discusses the halachos that applied during the days ofย miluim, it says, ื•ึผืžึดืคึถึผืชึทื— ืึนื”ึถืœ ืžื•ึนืขึตื“ ืœึนื ืชึตืฆึฐืื•ึผ ืฉึดืื‘ึฐืขึทืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื. This is aย lavย barring Aharon and his sons from leaving the entrance of the Ohel Moed during these seven days. Twoย pesukimย later, the Torah says, ื•ึผืคึถืชึทื— ืึนื”ึถืœ ืžื•ึนืขึตื“ ืชึตึผืฉึฐืื‘ื•ึผ ื™ื•ึนืžึธื ื•ึธืœึทื™ึฐืœึธื” ืฉึดืื‘ึฐืขึทืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื, which is aย mitzvasย aseiย to stay at the entrance to the Ohel Moed for those seven days. Considering that the Mishkan was dismantled on each of these seven days, however, how could Aharon and his sons stay at the Ohel Moed? It no longer existed!

The Ibn Ezra indicates that this might be aย machlokesย midrashim. Some Rishonim, such as Tosafos (Succahย 43b) and Chizkuni, say that ืชึตึผืฉึฐืื‘ื•ึผ doesnโ€™t mean constantly, 24 hours a day. Rather, it means that they should dwell there primarily. They certainly did not have to sleep there, since a person may not sleep in the Ohel Moed. Accordingly, Moshe Rabbeinu dismantled the Mishkan at night, when there was no requirement to stay at the entrance to the Ohel Moed. [See the Ramban in Parashas Pekudei for another answer.]

A New Face
I would like to present the approach of the Chasam Sofer, who explains that Moshe Rabbeinu was able to rebuild the Mishkan every day of theย miluimย without actually taking it down, so there was never a situation where there was no Mishkan.

Theย halachahย during the days of theย miluimย was that there should be a new Mishkan each day. Presumably, this would mean that the Mishkan had to be dismantled and then rebuilt. But the Gemara (Shabbosย 112b) presents a set of halachos that yield an intriguing solution for bypassing the need to dismantle the Mishkan entirely. The Mishnah states: ื›ืœ ื›ืœื™ ื‘ืขืœื™ ื‘ืชื™ื, ืฉื™ืขื•ืจืŸ ื‘ืจื™ืžื•ื ื™ื, meaning that aย kliย that isย tameiย of a homeowner โ€” not a merchant โ€” becomesย tahorย if it has a hole the size of a pomegranate, since it is no longer considered aย kli kibul. Even if someone fixes the hole, theย kliย remainsย tahor, since it is no longer the oldย kli. If, however, the hole is smaller than a pomegranate, then it is still called aย kli, and it remainsย tamei.

The Gemara then cites a question posed by Chizkiyah: Letโ€™s say aย tameiย utensil had a hole the size of an olive, and it was closed up, after which another olive-sized hole opened, and was closed up, and so on. Eventually, the broken-and-fixed individual holes would add up to the size of a pomegranate, but there was never any point when theย kliย developed a pomegranate-sized hole. What is the halachah? Does theย kliย becomeย tahorย or not?

R’ Yochanan responded that theย kliย would indeed becomeย tahor, citing, as evidence, the example of aย tameiย sandal, which becomesย tahorย if both of the straps on the side broke. The halachah is that even if one strap breaks and is repaired, and then the other one breaks and is repaired, the sandal becomesย tahor. Therefore, says R’ Yochanan, we see that if parts of aย kliย break in succession, even though they were never broken at the same time, the broken areas can be combined to render the utensilย tahor. Therefore, if aย kliย contains repaired holes that, over time, add up to the size of a pomegranate, then it is considered a newย kliย โ€”ย ืคึผึธื ึดื™ื ื—ึฒื“ึธืฉืื•ึนืช ื‘ึผึธืื•ึผ ืœึฐื›ึธืืŸ โ€”ย and isย tahor.

When Chizkiyah heard this insight from R’ Yochanan, he praised him effusively, saying, โ€œYou are not a person, youโ€™re aย malach.โ€

Dismantling Without Breaking
Applying this insight to the Mishkan, the Chasam Sofer explains that after Moshe Rabbeinu erected the Mishkan the first day, he did not dismantle it, but merely lifted each of theย kerashimย and returned it to its place. The Mishkan itself was never taken apart, but since each of theย kerashimย that gave it its structure was removed and replaced, the Mishkan was considered to have been built anew. So there was never a moment when no Mishkan existed, and therefore, there was always an entrance to the Ohel Moed.

This resolves the Rishonimโ€™s question of how it was possible for Moshe Rabbeinu to rebuild the Mishkan each day, while at the same time ensuring that the halachah of ื•ึผืคึถืชึทื— ืึนื”ึถืœ ืžื•ึนืขึตื“ ืชึตึผืฉึฐืื‘ื•ึผ ื™ื•ึนืžึธื ื•ึธืœึทื™ึฐืœึธื” ืฉึดืื‘ึฐืขึทืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ should be observed.

What a beautifulย vortย from the Chasam Sofer โ€” and it only gets better.

A New You
The Chasam Sofer adds that when Chizkiyah praised R’ Yochanan for this insight by calling him aย malach, he was conveying a deep concept.

When a person is born, he is aย poshuteh mentch, and hisย avodahย is toย shteig, to grow, to beย misgaber, and to change. The change he makes should not be to make himself just a little bit better, but to become a new person, like aย malach, so that hisย neshamahย is in control of hisย guf. The point is not just to do things better, or become a little bigger โ€” itโ€™s to become aืคึผึธื ึดื™ื ื—ึฒื“ึธืฉืื•ึนืช .

R’ Yochanan had already grown to the point where he was practically aย malach. โ€œNow I know how you got there,โ€ Chizkiyah told him. โ€œYou are living thisย vortย of ืคึผึธื ึดื™ื ื—ึฒื“ึธืฉืื•ึนืช ื‘ึผึธืื•ึผ ืœึฐื›ึธืืŸ.โ€

A person does not always appreciate the importance of each little component of hisย avodahย โ€” eachย tefillah, for instance.ย How much do I grow from this, a person might wonder.ย Will I really change from this? Itโ€™s not going to make a difference in the big picture. And so we leave things on the side, or we start things and donโ€™t finish them, or we neglect theย sedarimย we committed to. Weโ€™ll miss aย dafย yomiย shiur, or a few days of theย zmanย here and there. But R’ Yochanan recognized that every little effort adds up.

Even if you donโ€™t see the change now, and youโ€™re not a new person yet, each aspect of yourย avodahย combines to turn you into a new person, just as the lifting of eachย kereshย of the Mishkan separately caused the entire Mishkan to be considered a new structure, even though nothing had really changed. Oneย keresh, and the next, and the next, and suddenly, itโ€™s a new Mishkan. Similarly, if you have aย kliย thatโ€™sย tamei, and you wonder how you can purify it โ€” you canโ€™t possibly make a hole the size of a pomegranate! You know what? Make a small hole, the size of an olive. Then fix that hole, and make another small hole, and then another. When you finish, it will be a brand-newย kli!

R’ Yochanan became aย malach Hashemย through โ€œื–ื™ื›ื•ืš ืื—ืจ ื–ื™ื›ื•ืš,โ€ says the Chasam Sofer. Eachย avodahย that he did refined him a bit more, until he became totally purified, to the level of an angel.

A person can look in the mirror every day and see no change; he can look at his behavior and see no difference. Yet all of a sudden, at the end of aย zmanย in which he put in the effort each day to grow, he can look back and say, โ€œIโ€™m a different person.โ€
We should all beย zochehย to strengthen ourย avodahย and be deserving of the praise of ืคึผึธื ึดื™ื ื—ึฒื“ึธืฉืื•ึนืช ื‘ึผึธืื•ึผ ืœึฐื›ึธืืŸ.
