When Mitzvos Become Offspring
Parshas Noach
Harav Hagaon Yehudah Wagshal shlita
Parshas Noach begins with the words ืึตืึถึผื ืชึผืึนืึฐืึนืช ื ึนืึท ื ึนืึท ืึดืืฉื ืฆึทืึดึผืืง, and Rashi quotes this statement of Chazal: ืฉืขืืงืจ ืชืืืืืชืืื ืฉื ืฆืืืงืื ืืขืฉืื ืืืืื โ the primary offspring of a tzaddik are his good deeds. Now, Chazal say that the primary offspring of a tzaddik, specifically, is his maasim tovim, but we would think that should be the case for any person, not only a tzaddik! True, a tzaddik happens to do more good deeds than a regular person, but any personโs main โproductโ is his good deeds! So why do Chazal seem to imply that only maasim tovim of a tzaddik are considered his โtoldosโ? Apparently, the good deeds of a regular person are considered mitzvos, for which he receives reward, but they are not on the madreigah of โtoldos.โ
Actually, it seems puzzling that maasim tovim should be considered toldos at all, even for a tzaddik. In general, the concept of toldos requires connection. A person cannot produce offspring by himself; this happens only when there is a chibur and coming together of two sides. A man and a woman get married, there is a connection between them โืึฐืึธืืึผ ืึฐืึธืฉึธืืจ ืึถืึธื โ and the result is offspring, toldos. Similarly, in order for animals to produce offspring there must be a connection between a male and a female. This need for connection in order to create offspring applies to vegetation as well.
Furthermore, we know that seeds that are placed in sand will not grow, and R’ Moshe Feinstein explains that the difference between soil and sand is that each grain of sand exists on its own, with no connection between them even though they are packed tightly together, whereas soil consists of granules of dirt that combine into one unit. From that combination and connection, plants can grow, and that is what sparks the growth of fruits.
The rule is that whenever something is alone, with no connection to anything else, nothing can grow from it; there are no toldos. Only when there is chibur is it possible to have toldos. If so, then how can the maasim tovim of a tzaddik, which he performs by himself, be considered his toldos?
I think the answer lies within the question.
True, if a person performs a good deed all by himself without any connection, that maaseh tov is not a toldah, even though he will receive schar for it and is yotzei his obligation, but if he performs a good deed with connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu and the Torah, that maaseh tov is a toldah.
The word โmitzvahโ is usually translated as โcommandment,โ but some kadmonim note that it can also connote โtzavsa,โ which, in Aramaic, means โtogethernessโ or โcompanionship.โ
When a person does a mitzvah due to the tzivui, just to obey the command, heโs yotzei his chiyuv, and he earned himself a mitzvah, but he didnโt necessarily experience any connection. If, however, he performs the mitzvah as a tzavsa, an act of togetherness and connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, then the mitzvah will be a toldah.
Perhaps this is why Chazal stress that the main toldos of tzaddikim, specifically, are maasim tovim. Regular people also perform good deeds, but a tzaddik is someone whoโs connected to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, so the maasim tovim that he does are a result and expression of that chibur.
This idea might be reflected in the passuk that states, After mentioning Noachโs toldos, which Chazal say are good deeds, the Torah says that Noach walked โesโ โ with โ Hashem. What do the two parts of this passuk have to do with each other? According to what weโve explained, we can suggest that Noach was not performing his maasim tovim as an individual. Rather, his good deeds stemmed from his connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ ืึถืช ืึธืึฑืึนืงึดืื ืึดืชึฐืึทืึถึผืึฐ ื ึนืึท. Therefore, his maasim tovim were toldos.
Two Types of Mitzvos
What difference is there whether we do a maaseh tov thatโs a toldah โ forging connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, lishmah โ or a maaseh tov thatโs not a toldah, in a manner of ืืฆืืช ืื ืฉืื ืืืืืื, or because everyone else is doing it, or just because itโs something we have to do? Either way weโre yotzei the mitzvah and we get schar!
The difference is actually immense. A person has a limited amount of time in this world before moving on. But if he has toldos, then he has a continuation. Toldos are what give a person nitzchiyus.
A personโs physical continuation in this world is through his children. If he has no children, he has no continuation. The same is true of the toldos that are maasim tovim. When a person does a maaseh tov in the manner of tzivui, itโs beautiful and he gets schar, but a mitzvah involving connection and tzavsa creates a long-lasting toldah that makes an impression on the future of his life and on his family.
A toldah is something that creates peiros for the future, in the sense that you can benefit from it down the line. Just as a parent eventually reaps benefit from the children he raised, a person can benefit from the mitzvos that he does by having that mitzvah give back to him and uplift him in his ruchniyus in this world โ but thatโs only if the mitzvah is done in a manner of toldos, with connection, as tzaddikim do their maasim tovim.
From Noach we learn that the way to turn good deeds into toldos is through cultivating dveikus with Hakadosh Baruch Hu by forging connection with Him in every mitzvah we do, as we think about Who is behind the mitzvah and why we are doing it.
