Our Mabul

Parashas Noach

Harav Hagaon Meir Wahrsager Shlita

In Parashas Noach we find many ideas that are very relevant to Klal Yisraelโ€™s current situation. The passuk (Yeshayah 54:9) says ื›ึดึผื™ ืžึตื™ ื ึนื—ึท ื–ึนืืช ืœึดื™, calling the Mabul โ€œthe waters of Noach.โ€ Rโ€™ Chaim Shmuelevitz, in Sichos Mussar, cites from the Zohar that the reason the Mabul is attributed to Noach is that he didnโ€™t daven enough to save his generation from the Mabul. Rโ€™ Chaim famously explains that although Noach had a reason for not davening โ€” he knew that his tefillos would not be accepted โ€” he still should have cried out, because when something hurts you, you cry out, even if itโ€™s the plight of someone else. Yes, they were sinners, but it was nevertheless Noachโ€™s responsibility to daven for them, so much so that in a certain sense the Mabul is attributed to him.

This is obviously very pertinent to us at this time, when a large portion of Klal Yisrael is in danger โ€” some in imminent danger, and others in indirect danger. Itโ€™s a serious eis tzarah, and we have a tremendous responsibility to be nosei bโ€™ol. We find this idea in Parashas Noach as well, for Chazal say that Noach and his family could not engage in marital relations in the teivah. When destruction is unleashed in the world, people have to be nosei bโ€™ol, and there are certain dinim that apply.

We also find that the teivah needed a tzohar. Rashi interprets this in two ways, the first being that it was a window, like a skylight. This carries an important message for us as well. The teivah was meant to be a sealed, secluded place, a refuge from the sinfulness of the outside world and the destruction being wrought upon it. In the teivah, Noach was shut off, so that he could create something new and different, something disconnected from everything else in the world. Perhaps the message of the tzohar-window is that you canโ€™t be totally disconnected. I donโ€™t know whether Noach was actually able to see out of this window, but it served as an opening connecting him to the outside, indicating that he could not be completely distracted from what was going on outside. Even though he, the tzaddik, was protected and kept apart, he was not allowed to take his focus completely off what was happening around him.

Rashiโ€™s other interpretation of tzohar is that it was a precious stone that shone and illuminated the teivah. Perhaps these two explanations are interrelated. When someone sees out of his dalet amos and widens his perception, and even though he is in a state of comfort and safety and is not sinning, he is able to connect to the people who are hurting, who are carrying the middas hadin, that is actually a state of light.

On the other extreme of the spectrum, in Parashas Bo, the Torah describes Makkas Choshech as a state in which people could not see one another: ืœึนื ืจึธืื•ึผ ืึดื™ืฉื ืึถืช ืึธื—ึดื™ื•. Darkness is when you donโ€™t see the other person. In contrast, what brings light is when thereโ€™s a window open to acheinu Bnei Yisrael. Even when youโ€™re secluded, like Noach, the ability to see others is what brings light.

This is the achrayus of so many of us, especially those in America, who are not in immediate danger, even if they may have relatives in danger. Itโ€™s very easy to get caught up in your dalet amos. At the beginning there was an outpouring of concern, and there is still an outpouring, but as time goes on, people get used to the situation and the concern wears off. We have to remember to be nosei beโ€™ol; itโ€™s the achrayus of Klal Yisrael, and this is what will bring light into our world.

A Time for Change

Our responsibility to be nosei bโ€™ol in this situation has two aspects. In the first aspect, Klal Yisrael as a whole is shining, and that is the chizuk that people are taking on themselves: the tefillos, the learning, the chessed. Practically every night there are tefillah gatherings in all the neighborhoods, and the amount of learning is unbelievable. Husbands, wives, and bachurim gave up their bein hazmanim, while baalei batim are learning more than ever before. What people are doing for the soldiers is also incredible. This is what people feel they can do for Klal Yisrael, and these are ways of being directly nosei bโ€™ol.

But I think thereโ€™s a second aspect of this achrayus that does not receive enough attention, and that might even be our primary responsibility โ€” although itโ€™s hard to say anything definitively, since we donโ€™t really know. My feeling, however, is that we can try to discern the message Hashem is sending to us, and perhaps the point is that He wants our teshuvah. Chizuk is wonderful, but this tzarah will eventually come to an end โ€” hopefully all the suffering will disappear in the blink of an eye, with Moshiachโ€™s coming โ€” and what happens when it ends? Letโ€™s say youโ€™ll have thirty days that you davened, perhaps even with an atzeres tefillah every night. Is that all Hashem wants? That we should daven for thirty days and then revert to the way we davened before that? Learning extra sedarim, or sacrificing bein hazmanim, is a big zechus, but itโ€™s also a temporary undertaking, as is the current outpouring of chessed.

Teshuvah is a change. Teshuvah happens when someone examines his conduct and his behavioral patterns and makes a real, lasting change. If Hakadosh Baruch Hu brought this tzarah upon us โ€” a massacre the likes of which we havenโ€™t experienced since the Holocaust โ€” it means He is trying to accomplish something with it.

This tzarah struck on Shemini Atzeres, which is the last of the days of teshuvah, the end of the sequence that began in Elul and continued with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Succos. Hakadosh Baruch Hu seems to be telling us that we have not done enough teshuvah.

Teshuvah is different from chizuk. Chizuk is for a limited time, while teshuvah is change. Last week, when I walked out of the Mir, I saw a typical sight: two Israelis, not bnei yeshiva, got into a honking match as they were each crawling up the street in front of Beis Yeshayah and there was not enough for both to pass. All of a sudden, something remarkable happened โ€” perhaps it had something to do with the times; one of them backed up and let the other one go.

Thatโ€™s not chizuk. Itโ€™s changing your way. And thatโ€™s teshuvah.

Digging Deep

Everyoneโ€™s talking about being misโ€™chazek in shemiras Shabbos and learning Hilchos Shabbos. Thatโ€™s a great thing. But letโ€™s take the example of a person who doesnโ€™t always accept Shabbos early. Accepting Shabbos early is a behavior, and itโ€™s very hard to change an entrenched pattern of behavior. To do that is teshuvah. Itโ€™s something you canโ€™t change in a day, and it requires a lot of introspection and planning. But to make such a dent in that kind of behavior is a much deeper change, and itโ€™s something I think we can access during a time of tzarah like this, even more so than on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, when we donโ€™t always see the din and feel the pachad. This charon af that was poured on us is palpable, and in this situation we can access deeper parts of ourselves that we canโ€™t reach in other times.

Letโ€™s try to search for areas where we can make real change. If there are people that you have a grudge against for years, now is the time to change that. Itโ€™s time to change the way you talk, to change your behavior, to change your appreciation for Torah, to change your level of bitachon. Many of us havenโ€™t grown in our level of bitachon since we were in ninth grade, and bitachon is something so relevant now. So many people have to make decisions about whether to go learn in a place of sakanah, and while these are questions for rabbanim, even the process of weighing the options requires a certain amount of bitachon. A Yid who is consumed 24/7 with being safe and being safe and being safe, and thatโ€™s his overarching value in life, is missing bitachon. Iโ€™m not saying that a person should put himself in danger, but thereโ€™s no bitachon in that way of thinking either.

Some people are missing bitachon, and thatโ€™s okay โ€” we all have to shteig and improve. Sometimes, shteiging means digging deep into yourself and recognizing that maybe your bitachon is not holding where it should be, and you have to pull out a Shaar Habitachon and work on it.

Thatโ€™s an example of teshuvah.

I donโ€™t want to get mired in the details, but the point is that our achrayus right now โ€” our mei Noach โ€” is that along with pouring out our hearts in tefillah and learning more and doing extra chessed, we have to know that Hashem is asking for teshuvah. We ask Hashem, ื•ึฐื”ึทื—ึฒื–ึดื™ืจึตื ื•ึผ ื‘ึดืชึฐืฉืื•ึผื‘ึธื” ืฉึฐืืœึตืžึธื” ืœึฐืคึธื ึถื™ืšึธ, and each Yid, in his own life, has to pinpoint the areas in which he has drifted away from a focus on Hakadosh Baruch Hu. We just finished the period of ื•ึผืฉึฐื‚ืžึทื—ึฐืชึถึผื ืœึดืคึฐื ึตื™ย ื”’, and Hashem wants us to come back lifnei Hashem, to turn towards Him and find the areas that need change. This is something I think we can do; itโ€™s our achrayus in the current situation.

We should all be zocheh, with Hashemโ€™s help, to do teshuvah and to be nosei bโ€™ol, and all of Klal Yisrael should merit ื•ึฐื”ึทื—ึฒื–ึดื™ืจึตื ื•ึผ ื‘ึดืชึฐืฉืื•ึผื‘ึธื” ืฉึฐืืœึตืžึธื” ืœึฐืคึธื ึถื™ืšึธ.

Gut Shabbos, and besuros tovos.
