Extending the Teivah past Tishrei
Parashas Noach
Harav Hagaon Moshe Aharon Friedman shlita
The Pri Haaretz, Rโ Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, was one of the gedolei hachassidim who lived in Teveria about 250 years ago. The story goes that there was a rumor in Teveria that Moshiach had come to Yerushalayim, and there was a great commotion in the streets about this. But when people came to the Pri Haaretz to tell him about this rumor, he opened the window of his room, took a sniff, and said, โNo, itโs not the smell of Moshiach.โ
One of the other gedolim of the time offered an explanation of this reaction. Why did Rโ Menachem Mendel have to open the window to sniff if Moshiach had arrived? Because for the tzaddik himself, in his room, the scent of Moshiach was already present. He was already at the level of geulah, so he had to open the window โ the โtzoharโ โ to know that Moshiach had not yet arrived.
This story is an appropriate preface to a discussion of Noach and the teivah.
The Torah describes Noach with the words: ื ึนืึท ืึดืืฉื ืฆึทืึดึผืืง ืชึธึผืึดืื ืึธืึธื ืึฐึผืึนืจึนืชึธืื ืึถืช ืึธืึฑืึนืึดืื ืึดืชึฐืึทืึถึผืึฐ ื ึนืึท. Admittedly, he required support โ ืกืขื ืืชืืืื, as Rashi says โ but all in all, he merited that Hakadosh Baruch Hu saved him from the Mabul, through the teivah. Now, al pi teva, the teivah should not have survived the boiling water and winds of the Mabul, even the way it was constructed, with all the descriptions and dimensions the Torah details. The entire existence of the teivah during the Mabul was miraculous: the way it held more than it had the capacity to hold, and the way it transcended time.
There are insects and worms that live for only a week or two, so some ask how those species could have survived in the teivah, where there was no procreation. One answer is that in the teivah there was no aging; time was suspended.
The teivah was above teva, a place of hashraโas haShechinah, like the Mishkan and Beis Hamikdash. That is what saved Noach and his family from the Mabul: They were disconnected from Olam Hazeh, in a supernatural situation.
The Moshe of His Generation
This was not enough, however. Moshe Rabbeinu, too, was a tzaddik, but he knew how to connect back down to his generation and uplift them as well. The sefarim discuss many aspects of the contrast between Noach and Moshe Rabbeinu, and they note that Noach himself was supposed to be a Moshe Rabbeinu in his generation. It is no coincidence that the Gemara (Chullin 139b) sees a remez to Moshe Rabbeinu in the words in Parashas Noach, (The word ืึฐึผืฉึทืืึทึผื has the same gematria as โMoshe,โ who lived 120 years.)
The word ื ืฉืื is an acronym for Noach, Sheis, Moshe, Hevel, and the sefarim explain that they were gilgulim of the same neshamah. Hevel lived only a short time, and his soul was reincarnated as Sheis, who was reincarnated as Noach, and then as Moshe. This neshamah will eventually return as Moshiach, who will bring the world to its ultimate tikkun, back to the level of Adam Harishon before the cheit.
Noach spent 120 years preparing the teivah, and those years could have been parallel to the 120 years of Moshe; Noach could have been the one to bring the Torah down to this world. Then, Migdal Bavel could have been the Torah Shebeโal Peh โ Talmud Bavli โ and spread from there to the entire world. Had Noach and his generation merited, they could have been the generation of Kabbalas HaTorah.
This sheds new light on the idea that the description of Noach as ืึดืืฉื ืฆึทืึดึผืืง ืชึธึผืึดืื ืึธืึธื ืึฐึผืึนืจึนืชึธืื ย can be interpreted in either a positive or a negative light. His generation had vast potential โ it was supposed to be the generation of Kabbalas HaTorah โ but the opportunity was lost, so instead there was a Mabul.
Yet Noach did build a teivah, which was a sanctuary in its own right. Indeed, the Gemara (Succah 52b) interprets the passuk ืึทืึทึผืจึฐืึตื ึดื ื’ ืึทืจึฐืึธึผืขึธื ืึธืจึธืฉึดืืื (Zechariah 2:3) as a reference to four people who were builders: Mashiach Ben Dovid, Mashiach ben Yosef, Eliyahu Hanavi, and Kohen Tzedek, i.e., Shem ben Noach. The first two are builders of the Beis Hamikdash, Eliyahu Hanavi built a mizbeiโach on Har Hacarmel, and Shem ben Noach helped his father build the teivah, which is parallel to the Beis Hamikdash.
Furthermore, the number of pesukim in Parashas Noach is 153, and the remez at the end of the parashah to that number of pesukim is โBetzalel.โ Betzalel, who built the Mishkan, is parallel to Noach, who built the teivah.
Similar Structures
Rav Hutner writes, in a famous letter (Pachad Yitzchak, Igros 75) that there are two places where the Torah elaborates at length on the dimensions and description of an edifice: the teivah and the Mishkan. And thereโs a connection between the two. He focuses on the idea that a yeshiva is also a teivah of sorts, rescuing the people in it from the Mabul outside. But the connection goes much deeper. The teivah was not only a place of refuge โ it was a place of aliyah and building hashraas haShechinah. Noach was the kohen gadol in his teivah, performing the avodah incumbent on him. Indeed, the word teivah has the same gematria as Yom Hakippurim, 417, and has the same letters and gematria as the word habayis.
Our job is to put ourselves inside a teivah. The chassidishe sefarim explain that each time a person davens or learns, he is placing himself inside a teivah, where he experiences a Yom Kippur of sorts, as though he is inside the Beis Hamikdash.
The Torah says, ืึทืชึธึผื ึทื ืึทืชึตึผืึธื ืึทึผืึนืึถืฉื ืึทืฉึฐึผืืึดืืขึดื ืึฐึผืฉึดืืึฐืขึธื ืขึธืฉึธืืจ ืืึนื ืึทืึนืึถืฉื ืขึทื ืึธืจึตื ืึฒืจึธืจึธื, and while there are different ways to interpret this reference to the seventh month, we can explain that it refers to Tishrei. Teivah also means words, so the phrase ืึทืชึธึผื ึทื ืึทืชึตึผืึธื ืึทึผืึนืึถืฉื ืึทืฉึฐึผืืึดืืขึดื can be understood as an allusion to the words of tefillah uttered during the month of Tishrei. The word ืึฒืจึธืจึธื has the gematria of 410, which is the number of years the first Beis Hamikdash stood. We see, then, that the teivah contained within it the immense power of the Beis Hamikdash and had the potential to reach that level.
Every year in Tishrei, we put ourselves into that teivah, but it doesnโt end there. After Tishrei comes the month of Marcheshvan, whose name implies ืืจืืฉืื ืฉืคืชืืื โ our lips continue to utter those words, the โteivahs.โ We want the effort we invested in the words of our davening โ each and every teivah we said in the month of Tishrei โ to endure.
Humility = Complete
Another connection between Noach and Moshe is that the Torah says about both of them that they were motzei chein in Hashemโs eyes. Moshe Rabbeinu was motzei chein because of the principle that ืึฐืึทืขึฒื ึธืึดืื ืึดืชึถึผื ืึตื (Mishlei 3:34), and Moshe was the ultimate anav. Perhaps we can apply this principle to Noach as well. The Torah describes Noach as ish tzaddik tamim, and Rashi writes (Avodah Zarah 6) that the definition of tamim is anav uโshfal ruach. So Noach, too, was an anav, which is why he merited to be motzei chein.
But what connection is there between a tamim and an anav? In discussing the difference between Har Sinai and all the other mountains, the Gemara (Megillah 29) expounds the passuk ืึธืึธึผื ืชึฐึผืจึทืฆึฐึผืืึผื ืึธืจึดืื ืึทึผืึฐื ึปื ึดึผืื to mean that a bas kol emanated and declared that all the other mountains were baalei mumin, as the word ืึทึผืึฐื ึปื ึดึผืื, which literally means โlofty,โ can be understood as a reference to a blemish, as the passuk states, with regard to disqualifying blemishes, ืืึน ืึผึดืึผึตื ืืึน ืึทืง. We see from here, says the Gemara, that arrogance is considered a blemish. Accordingly, the lofty mountains were disqualified from having the Torah given on them, and Hashem chose to give the Torah on Har Sinai, which was lowly and โhumble.โ
Since gaavah is a mum, then Noach, who was tamim โ without a mum โ was, by definition, an anav, and that is why he was motzei chein.
Clearly, Noach did reach a lofty madreigah, which enabled him to enter the teivah. Although he did not save his generation, he did save the world, by giving it a new start. That new start was built upon the concept of a teivah โ putting oneself entirely into a situation of hashraโas haShechinah.
What weโre supposed to do now, in Chodesh Marcheshvan, is take all the avodah of Chodesh Tishrei and use them as a vehicle of hashraโas haShechinah and kiddush Shem Shomayim.
May we be zocheh to the ultimate hashraโas haShechinah, when the entire world will experience ืึทืชึธึผื ืึธืจึฐืึตืชึธ ืึธืึทืขึทืช ืึดึผื ื’ ืืึผื ืึธืึฑืึนืงึดืื ืึตืื ืขืึนื ืึดืึฐืึทืึผืึน.
