The Chida brings down from the Beis Yosef that the passuk is teaching us that Noach was removed from the transgressions of the generation. Later, the passuk says: ืึทืชึผึดืฉึผืึธืึตืช ืึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืึดืคึฐื ึตื ืึธืึฑืึนืงึดืื ืึทืชึผึดืึผึธืึตื ืึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืึธืึธืก, and Rashi, citing the Midrash, says that this alludes to the three transgressions of the generation: ืึทืชึผึดืฉึผืึธืึตืช ืึธืึธืจึถืฅ ย alludes to avodah zarah and gilui arayos, while ืึทืชึผึดืึผึธืึตื ืึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืึธืึธืก alludes to gezel. Rashi says again, a couple of pesukim later, that Chazal taught that these were the three transgressions of the generation.
Noach is called an ืึดืืฉื ืฆึทืึผึดืืง. The term tzaddik refers to someone who guards his bris kodesh, like Yosef Hatzaddik. We also find that someone who guards himself against gezel is called a tzaddik, like Yaakov, who took pains to avoid any trace of theft from Lavan and is referred to as a tzaddik. A tzaddik, then, is someone who is careful not to take something heโs not supposed to have, whether in the realm of arayos or gezel.
Regarding the description ืชึผึธืึดืื ืึธืึธื ืึผึฐืึนืจึนืชึธืื, the mitzvah of ืชึผึธืึดืื ืชึผึดืึฐืึถื ืขึดื ื’ ืึฑืึนืงึถืืึธ is not to believe in avodah zarah or in the heavenly bodies, but rather to believe in Hakadosh Baruch Hu. So the Torah is emphasizing that Noach went against the prevailing beliefs and practices of his generation, and although he was surrounded by a generation steeped in these three terrible aveiros, he was able to rise above that and be stronger than his generation.
Avodah zarah, gilui arayos, and gezel destroy the tzuras haโadam, which is why Noachโs generation was punished with a Mabul that wiped out the tzuras haโadam. Noach, who rose above his generation in these areas, was zocheh to find favor in Hashemโs eyes, as the passuk says: ืึฐื ึนืึท ืึธืฆึธื ืึตื ืึผึฐืขึตืื ึตื ื’. When a person guards himself in these areas, then he has a special chein in Hashemโs eyes.
The Mishnah at the end of Maseches Makkos says:ืืื ืืขืจืืืช ื ืคืฉื ืืืืืชื ืืืชืืื ืืื . Money is something that people greatly desire, and they may be moreh heter for themselves in that regard. Even if they donโt go and steal outright, they may steal in more subtle ways, rationalizing to themselves that their actions are justified. In every generation there are nisyonos with gezel.
Arayos is another nisayon, because people are into taavos, and znus involves significant pleasure.
Noach is a source of great chizuk for all of us, because even though he lived in a generation where gezel and arayos were rampant, he was still able to withstand the influence of his surroundings and hold strong. This is an important lesson for our generation, teaching us that we, too, can hold strong in these matters and always remain pure in financial matters and in the area of kedushas habris despite the prevalence of these aveiros in the world today.
The Protection of Shivisi
What gave Noach the power to avoid the transgressions his generation was steeped in? The passuk tells us the key: ืึถืช ืึธืึฑืึนืงึดืื ืึดืชึฐืึทืึผึถืึฐ ื ึนืึท.
The Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim says that the way to overcome all nisyonos and keep Torah and mitzvos is to always think about Hashem โ ย ืฉืึดืึผึดืืชึดื ื’ ืึฐื ึถืึฐืึผึดื ืชึธืึดืืโ and the Rema brings this down in the very first seโif in Shulchan Aruch. In that context the Gaon brings this passuk: ืึถืช ืึธืึฑืึนืงึดืื ืึดืชึฐืึทืึผึถืึฐ ื ึนืึท.
When youโre living in a generation in which you look around and see so many nisyonos, and so many people stumbling โ talking about things they shouldnโt talk about and doing things they shouldnโt be doing โ the only thing that can protect you and raise you above the people around you is remembering Hashem. When you keep that connection with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and you โwalkโ with Hashem as Noach did, that allows you to rise above your environment.
The concept of ืฉืึดืึผึดืืชึดื ื’ ืึฐื ึถืึฐืึผึดื ืชึธืึดืื is not just envisioning the letters ื-ื-ื-ื (which is one form of fulfilling Shivisi Hashem), itโs thinking about how much Hashem gave us and recognizing that our whole existence is from Hashem. Hashem is constantly good to us and always with us, and remembering that gives us the chizuk to be able to rise above the nisyonos.
The Rambam says in Hilchos Deiโos that the nature of a person is to be drawn after his surroundings. What gives a person the ability to transcend nature and avoid being drawn after his surroundings? Rabbeinu Yonah finds an approach in the passuk:ืึผึทื’ ืึดืฆึฐืึผึฐืงืึผ ืึฐืึดืชึฐืึทืึฐืืึผ ืึผึธื ืึถืจึทืข ืึดืฉืึฐืจึธืึตื. When we think about Hashem, we stay connected to Him, and thatโs what uplifts us. Hashem and the Torah are one, so our connection to Hashem is our limud haTorah. When we learn the words of Hashem, when we learn mussar, when we daven, weโre connecting to Hashem. Those moments in the day are such precious moments, and they empower us for the rest of the day not to forget Hashem, but rather to live with Hashem and be elevated.
A New Start
After the Mabul, Hashem gave the world a new start. Thatโs a lesson for all of us, teaching us that even if we stumble in these matters, Hashem gives us a new start.
We start Bereishis every year and then read Parashas Noach, after experiencing a Rosh Hashanah and a Yom Kippur. Letโs not forget that! Letโs remember that we were given a new start, and even if we werenโt perfect until now, every person has the pintele Yid inside him that remains pure, the kedushas haโadam that always exists inside him, the ืึฑืึนืงึทื ื ึฐืฉืึธืึธื ืฉืึถื ึผึธืชึทืชึผึธ ืึผึดื ืึฐืืึนืจึธื ืึดืื. This pure core gives us the ability to rebuild and start over again.
Parahas Noach begins as a parashah of destruction, showing what happens when things go wrong, but itโs also a parashah of rebuilding. We say:ืึทืฉืึฐืจึตื ืึดืืฉื ืฉืึถืึผึนื ืึดืฉืึฐืึผึธืึถืึธ ืึผืึถื ืึธืึธื ืึดืชึฐืึทืึผึถืฅ ืึผึธืึฐ โ we need to constantly remember to walk with Hashem. That will enable us to grow and to guard ourselves, so that we should rise above our surroundings and transcend nature. Just as Noach merited supernatural protection, every person merits his own teivas Noach, in which Hashem watches over him and gives him supernatural protection, so that he can withstand all the nisyonos and confusion affecting his surroundings.
We should be zocheh, with Hashemโs help, to the great reward of Olam Haba reserved for those who walk with Hashem all the time. For every moment that a person clings to Hashem in this world, in Olam Haba Hashem turns that, measure for measure, into eternal pleasure. May we be zocheh speedily to that time.
