Take a Flying Leap!

Pesach

Harav Hagaon Meir Wahrsager Shlita

ย

The avodah of Pesach night constitutes an exception to the general rules of avodas Hashem. All year round, we are supposed to take a gradual approach to growth, and we are cautioned against jumping madreigos. On Pesach, however, we find that it is not only permitted to leap upward in avodas Hashem, itโ€™s recommended.

Rav Wolbe finds a source for this in Rashi in Parashas Bo. Rashi says:

The Yom Tov is named โ€œPesachโ€ because Hakadosh Baruch Hu jumped over the homes of Klal Yisrael in Mitzrayim, and we, too, are meant to do the avodah of Pesach by skipping and jumping. The question is: why?

Thereโ€™s a good reason why we generally do not jump madreigos. The Vilna Gaon writes in Mishlei that if someone tries to jump to a madreigah that is not compatible with his present level, he will have no siyatta diShmaya, and it will not stick or build the person. So whatโ€™s the point of trying to jump on Pesach night? What are we going to gain?

One of the major themes of Pesach is that Pesach is Zman Cheiruseinu, the time when we went from slavery to freedom โ€“ not just in the physical sense, but in the spiritual sense as well. What was this freedom that Klal Yisrael merited when they left Mitzrayim?

Our redemption from Mitzrayim is described in the Torah as Hashem taking ื’ื•ึนื™ ืžึดืงึผึถืจึถื‘ ื’ึผื•ึนื™, and the Midrash compares Yetzias Mitzrayim to a birth, in which Hashem took Klal Yisrael out of Mitzrayim the way a midwife takes a baby out of its motherโ€™s womb.

The sefarim explain that the โ€œbirthโ€ of Klal Yisrael was manifest in their leaving the realm of teva and entering the realm of lโ€™maalah min hateva. The other nations of the world follow a solar calendar and are subject to the restrictions of teva, which are symbolized by the sun. The passuk in Koheles says: The sun does the same thing every single day, rising and setting, with no variation or hischadshus. Exactly what was, will continue to be. Thatโ€™s the pattern of teva: everything remains the same, nothing ever changes.

The word โ€œMitzrayim,โ€ comprises the same letters as the word meitzarim, which means โ€œboundaries.โ€ Klal Yisrael in Mitzrayim had boundaries; they were limited to the world of teva, the world that never changes. In the world of teva, a person who speaks lashon hara when he is young continues to speak lashon hara his whole life. The fellow who is the letz of the shiur stays a letz forever. The kid who didnโ€™t have zitzfleish never becomes a serious learner. The bochur who didnโ€™t have a taam in davening daydreams through davening every day, without fail. Mah shehayah, hu sheyihyeh. Youโ€™re limited. You canโ€™t change.

Thatโ€™s teva. Thatโ€™s the sun.

Lโ€™maalah min hateva means that the possibility of change exists, that you can lift yourself out of your restrictions and limitations and become someone different. This possibility is represented by the moon, which waxes and wanes. A chodesh, a month, reflects the power of hischadshus, the moonโ€™s ability to grow and change and reappear. A person whoโ€™s out of the realm of teva has the ability to develop into a new person and actually change.

Changing Self-Image

What limits us to the constraints of teva and prevents us from changing? Our self-image. Living in the world of teva, we view ourselves as restricted to the patterns in which weโ€™ve become entrenched. My grandfather is a lawyer, my father is a lawyer, Iโ€™m going to be a lawyer. I wasnโ€™t serious about my learning when I was young, so Iโ€™ll never be serious about my learning. Iโ€™ve always been a letz, so Iโ€™ll be a letz my whole life.

Our self-image prevents us from seeing ourselves in a new light, from imagining a new existence for ourselves, from envisioning ourselves as anything but what weโ€™ve always been. This is the greatest constraint, the worst meitzar possible.

The idea of cheirus is to free ourselves of our self-imposed limitations and stop dwarfing ourselves. During Yetzias Mitzrayim, Hakadosh Baruch Hu took a nation of slaves and turned them into a ืžึทืžึฐืœึถื›ึถืช ื›ึผึนื”ึฒื ึดื™ื ื•ึฐื’ื•ึนื™ ืงึธื“ื•ึนืฉื, a people who were capable of changing and becoming great.

The fellow who didnโ€™t have zitzfleish suddenly discovers that he could be a serious learner. The person who couldnโ€™t stop speaking lashon hara suddenly finds that he can control his mouth. The one who was once glued to his phone or device realizes that he can survive without it.

On Pesach, you have to go out of your small-mindedness and realize that you have unlimited potential for growth. This was the birth of Klal Yisrael and the cheirus that they merited in the process Yetzias Mitzrayim. The concept of ื“ืจืš ื“ื™ืœื•ื’ ื•ืงืคื™ืฆื” is the ability to make this transition by shedding our old self-image and saying, โ€œThatโ€™s not me.โ€

Such a step cannot be taken gradually; the regular approach of step-by-step spiritual growth would not work. In order to become the masmid, the baal chessed, the good husband, or whatever you want to change yourself into, you need to burst through the shackles of your own self-image. That has to happen all at once, in a jump. Itโ€™s not enough to say, โ€œIโ€™m going to try to be a better person.โ€ You have to be able to say, โ€œI am no longer that person, Iโ€™m a different person.โ€

Thatโ€™s what Klal Yisrael did in the course of Yetzias Mitzrayim. They left behind the 49 shaarei tumah and became Hashemโ€™s nation, rising all of a sudden to the forty-ninth level of kedushah. That jump is what broke the shackles.

The moment that you thrust yourself into a new existence and position yourself next to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, you break free of the mindset that previously bound and limited you. Grab onto Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€“ Heโ€™s holding your hand, as we say in the Haggadah: ื•ืขื›ืฉื™ื• ืงืจื‘ื ื• ื”ืžืงื•ื ืœืขื‘ื•ื“ืชื•.

After their initial jump, Klal Yisrael had to work back up to earn the level they had attained. But the first step had to be done in a jump, because it required a total shift in self-concept.

When a baby is born, the actual moment of birth is sudden, not gradual. There is tremendous pressure, and all of a sudden, the baby enters this world. That moment is a jump, and in that sense, Yetzias Mitzrayim was the birth of Klal Yisrael. There was a jump, and a new existence.

A Yearly Opportunity

On the words (Shir Hashirim 6:12): ืœึนื ื™ึธื“ึทืขึฐืชึผึดื™ ื ึทืคึฐืฉืึดื™ ืฉื‚ึธืžึทืชึฐื ึดื™, the Midrash Rabbah brings the following mashal. A princess was scrounging in the fields with the peasants, when the king passed by in his royal chariot and noticed his daughter there. He sent one of his trusted servants, who took the princess away from the fields and brought her to the king, who seated her in the chariot beside him. Her friends were incredulous. โ€œYesterday you were just a simple person,โ€ they said, โ€œand today youโ€™re sitting like a princess?โ€

โ€œJust as youโ€™re wondering how this happened to me, Iโ€™m also wondering how it happened to me,โ€ she replied.

Similarly, says the Midrash, Klal Yisrael in Mitzrayim were enslaved with bricks and mortar and were lowly and scorned in the eyes of the Egyptians. When they were freed, the other nations were incredulous. โ€œYesterday, you were doing slave labor with bricks and mortar,โ€ they wondered, โ€œand today youโ€™re free men and raised above the rest of the world?โ€

โ€œJust as youโ€™re wondering about us, weโ€™re wondering about ourselves,โ€ Klal Yisrael replied. That is the meaning of the words: ืœึนื ื™ึธื“ึทืขึฐืชึผึดื™ ื ึทืคึฐืฉืึดื™ ืฉื‚ึธืžึทืชึฐื ึดื™, we didnโ€™t know what strengths we had in our nefesh.

The Midrash is expressing the point we made regarding Yetzias Mitzrayim. Klal Yisrael themselves didnโ€™t know what latent abilities they possessed. Trapped in the world of teva, they were oblivious to their own gadlus. They thought of themselves as simple, lowly people who were on the forty-ninth level of tumah. They didnโ€™t change their names, language, and dress, but they were far, far away from fulfilling the 613 mitzvos ืงืœื” ื›ื—ืžื•ืจื” and dedicating themselves to Torah, tefillah, and avodas Hashem.

Suddenly, they discovered that they had all that potential within them. As soon as they were freed from their previous image of themselves, they revealed what had always been hidden inside.

This special opportunity comes back to us ever year on Pesach night, enabling us to free ourselves of the shackles of how we look at ourselves. We all have so many things we want to change, but change is so hard for us. You see people who go through their entire lives without changing; in general, people stay more or less the same. They get older, but they donโ€™t really change.

Why? Because theyโ€™re restricted by this perspective of teva, which means that they live a life that repeats itself over and over, just as the sun rises and sets. Itโ€™s very hard to shed our self-image and get rid of the mindset that this is who I am and zehu โ€“ what do you want from me? Pesach night, we have the opportunity to thrust ourselves past who we were and say definitively, โ€œNo, this is not who I am. Iโ€™m someone else โ€“ Iโ€™m close to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, Iโ€™m holding His hand, and Iโ€™m going with Him.โ€

A freilichen, kosheren Pesach.
