Parshas Lech Lecha

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz Shlita

This weekโ€™s parshah is Lech Lecha, and, as the Sfas Emes points out, lech lecha constitutes the first tzivui from Hashem to Avraham in the Torah. The Sfas Emes gives a novel explanation of the phrase lech lecha, which gives rise to a fundamental lesson for life. On a simple level, Hashem is telling Avraham to leave his land and go to Eretz Yisrael, but there is a much deeper meaning in leaving chutz laโ€™aretz and going to Eretz Yisrael that involves a major lifestyle shift. The Midrash notes that Avraham was actually inspired on his own to leave chutz laโ€™aretz, even before Hashem commanded him to leave, because he saw that people there were living empty lives, partying, getting drunk, and having fun instead of working and trying to earn money. This leitzanus and frivolity bothered Avraham, who did not want to be part of a society that wasted their time.

Hashem then told Avraham, โ€œIf this bothers you and you would like to get away from them, go to Eretz Yisrael, to a place where people behave differently.โ€ Although Eretz Yisrael, too, was inhabited by non-Jews, it was a different kind of society. So the command of lech lecha did not merely involve physically leaving chutz la’aretz to go to Eretz Yisrael; rather, it meant abandoning a society and its way of life for a place where Avraham would be able to live with more romemus, with more meaning in life.

This message of lech lecha applies to all generations. Even for those who do live in chutz laโ€™aretz, the message is: Detach yourself from the surrounding society, and put yourself into a place where you can live with more meaning. This is especially relevant in our times, when modern technology gives us so much direct access to the outside society, and so many people work with non-Jews. The influence of our environment is tremendous, so itโ€™s very important to always remember the tzivui of lech lecha, when Hashem told Avraham, โ€œLift yourself up and go Eretz Yisrael, where you can live a higher life, with tochen.โ€

A Timely Message

Lech Lecha is read shortly after Succos. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we were nisโ€™orer to be better Yidden, but by this time of the year we can easily forget our kabbalos and move on, since life is so busy and weโ€™re so preoccupied, between our families and our work. Thereโ€™s so much going on, and people are so strained by the need to earn parnassah, that they could come to forget Hashem and just be busy all day with parnassah. Moreover, in our world, great chashivus is attached to matters of Olam Hazeh, and people who have money are looked up to, so people are busy trying to buy brand-name items and fancy cars to show others that theyโ€™ve made it. They think that what people respect is success in matters of this world, and the real chashivus is money, and this prevailing attitude can sometimes cause us to lose sight of whatโ€™s truly important in this world, which is to be oved Hashem and be davuk in Hashem.

The tzivui that was given to Avraham is really a limud for all of us. Lech lecha โ€” wherever you are, check what your approach to life is. What are you working toward? What are you living for? What are you investing your efforts in? Is it for kavod? For wealth? For the pleasures of this world, to make beautiful meat parties and call it a Kiddush club with wine and alcohol? Or for dveikus baShem? Where are you really heading?

Itโ€™s very hard to make this distinction today, because, as Rโ€™ Yerucham taught, the difference between Gan Eden and Gehinnom is a chut hasaarah. Thereโ€™s a fine line between doing things for Hashem and doing them for other reasons, and we can easily be misled in this regard. Yet if we donโ€™t do things with the right kavanos, striving for dveikus baShem, we can be dragged down and greatly damaged.

So the first tzivui to Avraham, lech lecha โ€” leave your hometown, abandon your society, embrace a different way of life, live on a higher level, with more tochen โ€” that is something we all are challenged with. The first words of the parshah come to remind us not to give up, not to stop going forward, to live life with a tochen and invest in having true meaning in your life. Invest in your sidrei limud, connecting with the limud in a very strong way, not just reading it and falling asleep. Learn in a way that you have a geshmak, that your whole body and your whole essence connect to it. Learn halachah, learn mussar, learn things that will affect your life and fill it with tochen, rather than spend it only on the pursuit of happiness, pleasure, and chashivus in Olam Hazeh. Pursue whatโ€™s real and whatโ€™s going to stay with you for eternity.

This is the resounding message of lech lecha that applies to every generation and every individual. Itโ€™s something we have to be mechazek together, so letโ€™s try to strengthen ourselves together and maintain clear sight of where we are really heading in life and what our goals in life are. Itโ€™s not enough to just hear the ideas; we need to make sure weโ€™re doing things together to try to bring us closer to those important goals.

The Battle โ€” and the Victory

The parshah then goes on to relate that Avraham waged war against the four kings, and, as the sefarim teach, this is an allusion to the four galuyos that Klal Yisrael would endure. Sometimes, the galus is so powerful, and we feel hopelessly outnumbered, like Avraham facing four mighty kings: โ€œWhat are you talking about? We should improve? We should start thinking more about Hashem when we do mitzvos? We should be mechaven to do the tzivui of Hashem when we put on our tallis and tefillin in the morning, and when we daven? Itโ€™s so hard! How can I connect with that? Iโ€™m living a life thatโ€™s so demanding!โ€

Thatโ€™s the yetzer hara โ€” he tries to make us feel that itโ€™s impossible to fight this battle. So along comes the maaseh avos siman labanim: Avraham going to war and miraculously triumphing over four powerful kings. This teaches us that as strong a hold as the galus has over us, and as powerful the nisyonos we face are, we can overcome all this if we just apply ourselves and keep working: ื”ื‘ื ืœื˜ื”ืจ ืžืกื™ื™ืขื™ืŸ ืื•ืชื•. The key is to keep forging ahead โ€” lech lecha, keep on going.

In the end, says the Torah, all the kings who remained after Avraham killed the four kings came to โ€œEmek Shaveh,โ€ meaning that they accepted Avraham as the ruler over them. The Chofetz Chaim al HaTorah notices a remez here for us. Currently, the tzaddikim are persecuted by the non-Jews and unfortunately donโ€™t receive the kavod they should get for their Torah and mitzvos, because people are machshiv wealth and the pleasures of this world. But the day will come when they, and we, will be zocheh to Emek Shaveh โ€” and not just for a short time, but lโ€™netzach netzachim. All of our avodah and ameilus will be repaid by Hashem.

Many of us have formidable nisyonos in matters of Olam Hazeh, or in bein adam lโ€™chaveiro, with our jobs or our families, and not always do we receive kavod for working on our middos, but remember Emek Shaveh โ€” the day will come when everyone will see ื•ึฐืึนื”ึฒื‘ึธื™ื• ื›ึฐึผืฆึตืืช ื”ึทืฉึถึผืืžึถืฉื ื‘ึดึผื’ึฐื‘ึปืจึธืชื•ึน. Thatโ€™s another form of tochen in life, to work on middos tovos, on shalom, on being mevater, on not getting upset.

Let us try to put more tochen in our lives โ€” more Torah, more middos tovos, more meaning โ€” so that this becomes our mahalach hachaim, our lech lecha to Eretz Yisrael.

We should all be zocheh bโ€™karov that Hashem will bring us all back to Eretz Yisrael, where we will all be zocheh to our Emek Shaveh, our kingdom lโ€™netzach netzachim.
