Our Weapons of War

Parashas Lech Lecha

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz Shlita

This weekโ€™s parashah contains the story of Lotโ€™s capture by the four kings, and Avrahamโ€™s subsequent battle against those kings, from which he emerged triumphant, and brought back Lot. The Ramban, citing the Midrash, teaches that this is an instance of maaseh Avos siman labanim, indicating what will occur leโ€™asid lavo. The four kings allude to the four exiles of Klal Yisrael, and Avraham Avinu represents Klal Yisrael, who, through the zechus of the tzaddikim who emulate Avraham Avinu, will fight and overcome their foes.

Although the war Avraham fought seemed like an impossible mission โ€” one man against the whole world โ€” Avraham won nonetheless, because when someone tries and works hard, he is zocheh to victory.

The Chofetz Chaim elaborates on this Ramban, explaining that this is a lesson for all times, teaching us that we should keep trying and working and growing and davening and learning. The Chofetz Chaim adds that when the Torah relates that in the end they all went to Emek Hashaveh and crowned Avraham king over the whole world, that alludes to the time of the geulah, when Moshiach will come and the whole world will crown Klal Yisrael as kings. Now we are in a state of war, and during this time we have to work hard for our ruchniyus, but leโ€™asid lavo we will be zocheh to everything good.

This is a great chizuk for us, teaching us that whoever is misgaber during a time of galus, when it seems so difficult to be misgaber, will merit much good.

The parashah contains another powerful lesson that is highly relevant to this time, when Klal Yisrael needs tefillos and zechusim so badly, after the mind-boggling events that happened here, with so many people killed and injured, and so much damage done. Klal Yisrael remains in a state of danger; we always knew what the Arabs wanted to do to us, but now Hashem let them do it. We have to thank Hashem for watching over us until now and daven to Him to continue to watch over us.

We need the zechus of tefillah and the zechus of Torah, but many people wonder, what can I, a simple individual, accomplish? Yet from Avraham Avinu we see that one person who fights can make a big difference. Whatever you do truly matters.

Every Cry Counts

Pirkei dโ€™Rabbi Eliezer (ch. 48) relates that there was an expectant woman in Mitzrayim named Rachel who was working with her husband in Mitzrayim making cement, and she miscarried, and the baby slipped into the cement and died. She then issued a great scream, and the malach Michael came, took the brick containing the baby, and brought it up to the Kisei Hakavod. This womanโ€™s tefillah, amid her great tzaar, went up to the Kisei Hakavod. This shows us the power of one personโ€™s tefillah. We shouldnโ€™t think, what difference does it make if I daven or say Tehillim? Every heartfelt tefillah that we utter ascends to Shamayim.

The Radal, a peirush on Midrash, sees this incident alluded to in the passuk ืจึธื—ึตืœ ืžึฐื‘ึทื›ึธึผื” ืขึทืœ ื‘ึธึผื ึถื™ื”ึธ. The simple meaning is that Rachel Imeinu is crying for her children, but the Radal says that it hints to this Midrash. He also points to the Targum Yonasan ben Uzielโ€™s interpretation of the Torahโ€™s statement, at the end of Parashas Mishpatim, then when Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave the Torah, Nadav, Avihu, and the Zekeinim saw a vision of ื•ึฐืชึทื—ึทืช ืจึทื’ึฐืœึธื™ื• ื›ึฐึผืžึทืขึฒืฉึตื‚ื” ืœึดื‘ึฐื ึทืช ื”ึทืกึทึผืคึดึผื™ืจ, they saw the brick of that baby, whose mother, Rachel, cried out when he died.

All of our tears, all our agmas nefesh, all the tzaros we suffer in galus โ€” Hashem has them all beside His Kisei Hakavod. Every cry of every Yid ascends to Him, as He revealed to us at Matan Torah. When Hashem gave us the Torah, He did so because He wanted to give us all the good and all the berachah and all the siyatta dโ€™Shmaya. When we learn Torah and keep the mitzvos, we are zocheh to Hashemโ€™s love, and to geulos and yeshuos.

Letโ€™s remember the brick of the woman who cried out to Hashem, and strengthen ourselves together to daven for the good of Klal Yisrael. Letโ€™s take on an extra limud together, whether weโ€™re learning in yeshiva or whether weโ€™re baalei batim, for the zechus of all of Klal Yisrael. Letโ€™s dedicate this extra learning and davening as a zechus for refuos and yeshuos, and so that the captives should be returned. Hashem should watch over all of us, so that no one should be hurt or killed, chas vโ€™shalom.

Every tefillah we daven, and every bit of Torah we learn, makes a difference. We shouldnโ€™t think that this was true only in previous generations; we just saw, last week, that Noach is described as a tzaddik ย ื‘ึฐึผื“ึนืจึนืชึธื™ื•, which, Rashi explains, means that in Avrahamโ€™s generation he would not have been considered a great tzaddik. The Chofetz Chaim al haTorah notes that this teaches us an important lesson: We may wonder whether our tefillos and our Torah are worth anything, but the Torah is telling us that these merits are viewed in the context of ื‘ึฐึผื“ึนืจึนืชึธื™ื•, our generation. Specifically our davening and our Torah are what will bring salvation, because even though they may not be on the level of previous generations, Hashem knows that the yetzer hara we face is formidable, so everything we do for the zechus of Klal Yisrael makes a difference. And we need so many zechusim to overturn the middas hadin and transform it to middas harachamim.

Tefillah is what accomplishes that, along with the zechusim of Klal Yisrael.

Taking the Initiative

Another parallel between the war Avraham fought in this parashah and our current situation is that Lotโ€™s capture was preceded by a dispute between his shepherds and Avraham. Similarly, our current galus was caused by sinas chinam and disputes; when there is hatred among us, Hashem sends against us, middah kโ€™neged middah, a nation that is full of hatred. There is no other explanation for what they did.

When we see this outpouring of hatred, we need to be mesaken this area so that we can bring the final geulah.

Pirkei dโ€™Rabbi Eliezer says that Yishmaelโ€™s name alludes to what Yishmael is going to do to Klal Yisrael before Moshiach comes, causing us to cry out to Hashem because of the tzaros they bring upon us. We are going to daven to Hashem, and He will hear our tefillos โ€”ย  yishma Keil โ€” ย and bring Moshiach.

Letโ€™s cry out to Hashem over these terrible tzaros, every one of us, begging Him to protect Klal Yisrael.

Itโ€™s very easy to say, โ€œIโ€™m sitting in my home, Iโ€™m sitting in America, and everythingโ€™s okay here,โ€ but when we cry out for others, and add zechusim for Klal Yisrael, weโ€™re bringing about a tikkun for sinas chinam, because weโ€™re showing that we care about others and we want to protect them and help them. That is the antithesis of infighting.

If we have anything that we ourselves need to fix, this is a time of teshuvah in Klal Yisrael, and we should pay particular attention to avoid conflict. Letโ€™s think whom we may have hurt with our words, and what we have done that could have caused distance between ourselves and others. Perhaps we spoke words of mussar, but said them painfully, violating the prohibition of ื•ึฐืœึนื ืชึดืฉึธึผื‚ื ืขึธืœึธื™ื• ื—ึตื˜ึฐื, which applies even when giving tochachah. You have to be careful how you reprove someone, ensuring that the person is not hurt or embarrassed as a result. How careful we must be with our words, to be extra sensitive and extra good to others.

The antidote to the Mabul, which also represents galus, was chessed โ€” kindness even to animals, even to a cockroach or an ant. How much more meaningful is it when we do chessed for pure, holy Yiddishe neshamos, and how sensitive and good we must be to them!

We should try to strengthen ourselves in these three areas: Torah, tefillah, and chessed, and remember that every individualโ€™s efforts make a difference.

Baruch Hashem, Klal Yisrael is making exceptional chizukim, with these beautiful tefillah gatherings and teshuvah initiatives. When we join together, as a unit, everyoneโ€™s power is multiplied, so if we can strengthen ourselves together, we can amass enormous zechusim for Klal Yisrael.

Rav Tzadok and other sefarim hakedoshim, such as the Sfas Emes, say that the command to Avraham of lech lecha implied that he should go up from one madreigah to another and constantly grow. We have been presented with a major opportunity to elevate ourselves, so letโ€™s take advantage of it and increase our Torah and tefillah and pursuit of shalom.

The word lech has the same letters and gematria as kol, and the two words lech lecha are double kol, hinting to Olam Hazeh and Olam Haba. By elevating ourselves, we can be zocheh to kol in both this world and the next, and to enjoy an Olam Hazeh that is meiโ€™ein Olam Haba โ€”ืืฉืจื™ืš ื‘ืขื•ืœื ื”ื–ื” ื•ื˜ื•ื‘ ืœืš ืœืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ื โ€” which is the lot of Avraham Avinuโ€™s talmidim. Letโ€™s continue in his path, letโ€™s take on extra chizuk, and may we be zocheh to berachos and yeshuos together with all of Klal Yisrael.
