What Set Avraham Avinu Apart?
Parashas Lech Lecha

Parashas Lech Lecha tells the story of Avraham Avinu and describes how Hashem drew him close and performed miracles for him.
Avraham Avinu, whom Hashem called ืึทืึฐืจึธืึธื ืึนืึฒืึดื, became the father of the nation of Hashem โ Klal Yisrael, and the Rishonim discuss why he was the one chosen for that role. Avraham Avinu wasnโt the first person to learn Torah, nor was he the first person to do mitzvos. Adam and Noach did that before him. So did Noachโs son Shem, and Shemโs great-grandson Eiver, who together ran a yeshiva: the yeshiva of Shem and Eiver.
What was so unique about Avraham Avinu? True, Avraham Avinu recognized his Creator independently, figuring out himself that thereโs Hakadosh Baruch Hu and not learning that from preceding generations, but after he did that, what did he do better than Shem and Eiver?
The Raavad (Hilchos Avodah Zarah 1:3) explains that Shem and Eiver were concerned with themselves and did their own avodas Hashem, while Avraham Avinu went out to the world and publicized Hashemโs Name. But the Chofetz Chaim points out that Shem vโEiver already had a yeshiva, which means they were definitely going out and calling out to others.
In Davar Bโito, and also somewhat in Parashas Vayeira, the Chofetz Chaim explains that the uniqueness of Avraham Avinu is expressed on the passuk: ืึฐืึทืขึทื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืึฐืฆึทืึผึถื ืึถืช ืึผึธื ึธืื ืึฐืึถืช ืึผึตืืชืึน ืึทืึฒืจึธืื. Avraham Avinu understood the importance of the Jewish family and the importance of transmitting the truth and the Torah that he had absorbed to future generations. Not only was he prepared to give up his life in the fiery furnace, he later went and passed this on to future generations.
The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 63) cites a passuk in Yeshayah:ืึธืึตื ืึผึนื ืึธืึทืจ ื’ ืึถื ืึผึตืืช ืึทืขึฒืงึนื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืคึผึธืึธื ืึถืช ืึทืึฐืจึธืึธื and explains that Hakadosh Baruch Hu says to Yaakov and Klal Yisrael that Avraham Avinu was saved in the zechus of there being a Yaakov Avinu and a Klal Yisrael. Avraham Avinuโs uniqueness was that he was moser nefesh to inculcate in future generations that which he himself was moser nefesh for. Thatโs the uniqueness of Klal Yisrael.
Before Yaakov Avinu passed away, his biggest worry was that perhaps he didnโt merit ืืืชื ืฉืืืื, until his children said to him: ืฉืึฐืึทืข ืึดืฉืึฐืจึธืึตื ื’ ืึฑืึนืงึตืื ืึผ ื’ ืึถืึธื. The meforshim explain that this is what is meant in the passuk in Parashas Beshalach, after the war with Amalek: ืึผึดื ืึธื ืขึทื ืึผึตืก ืงึธืึผ ืึดืึฐืึธืึธื ืึทื’ ืึผึทืขึฒืึธืึตืง ืึดืึผึนืจ ืึผึนืจ. The war against Amalek is ืึดืึผึนืจ ืึผึนืจ, over the fact that we, Klal Yisrael, transmit to our children and grandchildren that which we received from our parents and grandparents.
The passuk says in Divrei Hayamim: ืึฐืึทืชึผึธื ืฉืึฐืึนืึนื ืึฐื ึดื ืึผึทืข ืึถืช ืึฑืึนืงึตื ืึธืึดืืึธ. Shlomo Hamelech was the wisest of all men, and he authored Koheles and Shir Hashirim, which reflect his appreciation of Hashemโs Torah and mitzvos and his love for Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Yet nevertheless, he was told: ืึผึทืข ืึถืช ืึฑืึนืงึตื ืึธืึดืืึธ โ appreciate what your father stood for and the ability to transmit this to future generations.
The Mishnah tells us:
The Maharam Schick understands the Mishnahโs directive to mean that every Yid should look at the following three things: ืึตืึทืึดื ืึผึธืืชึธ โ look at your parents, look at your grandparents, look at the truth for which they were moser nefesh, look at what was important to them; ืึผืึฐืึธื ืึทืชึผึธื ืืึนืึตืึฐ โ look at what comes after you, and transmit the truth to your children, so that they will stride in your way; ืึฐืึดืคึฐื ึตื ืึดื ืึทืชึผึธื ืขึธืชึดืื ืึดืชึผึตื ืึผึดืื ืึฐืึถืฉืึฐืึผืึนื โ and ask yourself, โDid I keep to my destiny to transmit to my children and future generations that which I received from earlier generations?โ
On the passuk in Mishlei (21:27): ืึฐืึดืืฉื ืฉืืึนืึตืขึท ืึธื ึถืฆึทื ืึฐืึทืึผึตืจ, the Malbim explains that a person should be a ืฉืืึนืึตืขึท from his rebbeim and his parents, and he should tell and transmit what he heard from them to the generations after him.
Furthermore, Shlomo Hamelech writes (Shir Hashirim 1:8): ืึดื ืึนื ืชึตืึฐืขึดื ืึธืึฐ ืึทืึผึธืคึธื ืึผึทื ึผึธืฉืึดืื ืฆึฐืึดื ืึธืึฐ ืึผึฐืขึดืงึฐืึตื ืึทืฆึผึนืื ืึผืจึฐืขึดื ืึถืช ืึผึฐืึดืึผึนืชึทืึดืึฐ ืขึทื ืึดืฉืึฐืึผึฐื ืึนืช ืึธืจึนืขึดืื โ if you want to go in the derech Hashem, go in the way of your parents, and nurture your little lambs โ your own children and those who come after you โ by teaching them what you learned from your parents and rebbeim.
When Yaakov Avinu heard that Yosef Hatzaddik was alive and had remained faithful to Yiddishkeit he said: ืึธืืึผืชึธื ืึทืคึผึธืขึทื โ now Iโm ready to die. Thatโs the simple translation. The Shach al haTorah and the Ohr Hachaim explain that until then, Yaakov had been worried about Yosef, but now that he saw that all his children were following in his way, he was confident that he would die only in this world.
Light the Fire for the Next Generation
Chazal say that Yaakov Avinu said, โI lift up my eyes to my parents and my grandparents โ ืื ืืืืจืื โ and from that comes my yeshuah.โ Obviously, there has to be some connection between this interpretation and the simple translation of the passuk, โI lift my eyes to the mountains.โ
Back when beis din established the timing of Rosh Chodesh based on the testimony of witnesses, they notified Klal Yisrael of the beginning of the new month by lighting a fire on one mountaintop, which was seen by the people on the next mountaintop, who lit another fire that was seen by the people on the next mountaintop. Yaakov saw his parents as mountains ablaze with fire, and just as in the days of Chazal a person would lift his eyes and see a mountain ablaze with fire, and would then know that the time had come to light a fire on his own mountain that would then be seen by further mountains and transmitted to the rest of the world, Yaakov Avinu lifted his eyes to his parents and saw a fire blazing with Torah and mitzvos and mesirus nefesh, and he learned from them that itโs his responsibility and privilege to light his own fire. This fire would not be a little fire for himself โ it would be a fire just like that of Avraham Avinu, who kindled a fire for his children to emulate.
Dovid Hamelech describes himself in Tehillim in different ways โ for instance, as a pauper, in the passuk (102:1): ืชึผึฐืคึดืึผึธื ืึฐืขึธื ึดื ืึดื ืึทืขึฒืึนืฃ. In one place, he describes himself as a king (72:1): ืึดืฉืึฐืึนืึนื ืึถืึนืงึดืื ืึดืฉืึฐืคึผึธืึถืืึธ ืึฐืึถืึถืึฐ ืชึผึตื ืึฐืฆึดืึฐืงึธืชึฐืึธ ืึฐืึถื ืึถืึถืึฐ. When did Dovid Hamelech perceive himself as a king? The Midrash in Vayikra says it was when he was fulfilling the role of teaching his children, as the passuk continues: ืึฐืฆึดืึฐืงึธืชึฐืึธ ืึฐืึถื ืึถืึถืึฐ. When he was able to give over to his children and talmidim and future generations, thatโs when he felt he was fulfilling his tafkid, and thatโs when he felt worthy of the title โking.โ
May Hashem bless each and every one of us to be zocheh to the ultimate brachah, like Avraham Avinu: ืึฐืึทืขึทื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ืึฐืฆึทืึผึถื ืึถืช ืึผึธื ึธืื ืึฐืึถืช ืึผึตืืชืึน ืึทืึฒืจึธืื ืึฐืฉืึธืึฐืจืึผ ืึผึถืจึถืึฐ ื’.
