External Influences: Threat and Opportunity
Parashas Korach

Rashi tells us that Korach was accompanied by 250 people, most of whom were from Shevet Reuven, including Dasan and Aviram. Why were members of Shevet Reuven the ones who went along with Korach? Rashi answers: ืืื ืืจืฉืข ืืืื ืืฉืื ื โ one who lives in close proximity to a rasha is affected by the rasha as well. Although there was a mil between Korach and Bnei Reuven, apparently that was close enough for Korach to influence them. This hashpaas hasevivah extended not only to the Bnei Reuven who lived near Korach but also to Korachโs property, as Chazal say that when Korach was swallowed up no one was allowed to touch his property and everyone was instructed to let go of anything belonging to Korach. The Ibn Ezra explains that anyone who would have been in contact with anything belonged to Korach and his people would have been swallowed up together with those items.
Rav Dessler notes that this shows how far the hashpaas hasevivah extends. The hashpaas hasevivah of a tzaddik impacts not only the people around him, but his clothing and belongings as well. We find this idea embodied in Eliyahuโs cloak and Elishaโs staff. Conversely, the belongings of Korach and his people were included in their negative hashpaas hasevirah, and therefore anyone who was in contact with those items was in danger of being swallowed by the earth.
The Gemara in Bava Basra tells us that when a tzaddik comes to Olam Haba, Hakadosh Baruch Hu grants him his rightful portion in Gan Eden for all the mitzvos he did. But the tzaddik is also granted an additional portion โ one that was designated for a rasha but was not used because the rasha didnโt reach Gan Eden. As the Gemara says, the tzaddik receives ืืืงื ืืืืง ืืืจื ืืื ืขืื.
Why, ask the meforshim, does the tzaddik deserve double, just because the rasha didnโt make it into Gan Eden? The Chofetz Chaim explains that by doing aveiros, the rasha makes it harder for the tzaddik, because aveiros cause a hashpaas hasevivah that impact the tzaddik. The tzaddik therefore had to work extra hard to do mitzvos, battling not only his own yetzer hara but also the hashpaas hasevivah of the rasha. The more evil the rasha was, the harder it was for the tzaddik, and because the nisayon of the tzaddik was more difficult due to the hashpaas hasevivah, he deserves additional schar.
On the one hand, then, the hashpaas hasevivah exerts a very strong pull, but on the other hand, if we withstand the temptation of the hashpaas hasevivah then thereโs exponential schar awaiting us.
Ignoring Negative Influences
The pesukim in Sefer Daniel tell us that Nevuchadnetzar was the most powerful king, to the extent the Gemara in Shabbos notes that as long as Nevuchadnetzar was on the throne nobody in the entire world could smile, so frightened were they of him.
In Danielโs conversations with Chananyah, Mishaโel, and Azaryah, Nevuchadnetzar is referred to sometimes as ืึทืึฐืึผึธื ื ึฐืืึผืึทืึฐื ึถืฆึผึทืจ and other times simply as Nevuchadnetzar. The Midrash in Shir Hashirim explains that they were conveying a message to Nevuchadnetzar: โIf youโre making demands of us that do not contradict our Torah, such as demands that we abide by the general laws and pay taxes, then weโll treat you with the respect that you deserve as the powerful King Nevuchadnetzar. But if you try to influence us, to change our priorities and our way of life, or to cause us to want to do aveiros, then we refer to you as Nevuchadnetzar โ an ordinary person.โ
The Gemara (Sukkah 45b) teaches that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said about himself and his son Rโ Elazar that we are determined to be bnei aliyah. โThere is a limited number of bnei aliyah in the world,โ he said. โIf there are a thousand, my son and I are among them. If there are only a hundred, the two of us are among them. If there are only two bnei aliyah in the world, then those two are my son and me.โ
This sounds like a very haughty thing to say, but Rav Chaim explains that Rabbi Shimonโs intention wasnโt that he and his son are so important and special. Rather, he meant that heโs working on achieving a madreigah, and heโs determined that even if everyone in the entire world would get it wrong and think that heโs making a mistake in life, he will adhere to what he knows to be true. Even if the entire world would be against the two of them, he and his son would still be bnei aliyah. Similarly, Avraham Avinu is praised with the words: ืึถืึธื ืึธืึธื ืึทืึฐืจึธืึธื โ he was prepared to stand up for whatโs right even though he was the only person in the entire world who believed in what he did.
Ovadya and His Wife Save Klal Yisrael
In the haftarah of Parashas Vayishlach, we read about the navi Ovadya, one of the Trei Asar, who merited to prophesize about the eventual downfall of Malchus Edom, concluding with the words: ืึฐืขึธืืึผ ืืึนืฉืึดืขึดืื ืึผึฐืึทืจ ืฆึดืึผืึนื ืึดืฉืึฐืคึผึนื ืึถืช ืึทืจ ืขึตืฉืึธื ืึฐืึธืึฐืชึธื ืึทื’ ืึทืึผึฐืืึผืึธื. Why was Ovadya chosen to transmit this beautiful nevuah about the future geulah from Galus Edom?
The Gemara (Sanhedrin 39b) points out that Ovadya was a servant of the terrible king and queen Achav and Izevel, and he merited to deliver this nevuah because he withstood the hashpaas hasevivah of these two reshaโim. Although he was surrounded by these reshaโim and their followers, he nevertheless stood up for his ideals, hiding a hundred neviโim in two caves even though he knew full well that if Achav or Izevel found out about this it would cost him his life. The Midrash adds that because he had to provide these neviโim with food and drink, he had to involve other people, which meant that he was in constant mortal danger.
Ovadya, who remained a tzaddik in spite of his proximity to these reshaโim, was chosen to give the nevuah about the eventual downfall of Malchus Edom, descendants of Eisav, who was raised by two tzaddikim yet did not learn from their good deeds.
In Sefer Melachim, we find that the king of Moav sacrificed his own son as a korban to his avodah zarah, after which Hashem became very angry with Klal Yisrael. Immediately afterward, the navi records the story of the ืึดืฉึผืึธื ืึทืึทืช ืึดื ึผึฐืฉืึตื ืึฐื ึตื ืึทื ึผึฐืึดืืึดืื, who cried 265 tefillos to save her sons from being taken to the court of the wicked King Yehoram. The Midrash Tanchuma explains that the reason Hashem was very angry at Klal Yisrael now was that they learned from the king of Moav to sacrifice their children to avodah zarah โ a manifestation of the hashpaas hasevivah. They were saved only because one woman was moser nefesh so that her children should not be taken by Yehoram. Rโ Yonasan Eibeshitz explains that she understood that if Yehoram were to take them, he would not sell them as slaves to someone else, but would rather keep them for himself, in which case they would be subject to the negative hashpaas hasevivah of Yehoram.
Who was this woman? Chazal say that she was none other than the wife of Ovadya Hanavi. Ovadya was moser nefesh to resist the hashpaas hasevivah and provide for the neviโim, and his wife was moser nefesh so that her two boys would not be subjected to the hashpaas hasevivah of the wicked Yehoram. This was the salvation of Klal Yisrael at the time.
Chazal note the connection between the passukโs description of Ovadyaโs wife as: ืึดืฉึผืึธื ืึทืึทืช ืึดื ึผึฐืฉืึตื ืึฐื ึตื ืึทื ึผึฐืึดืืึดืื, and the words ืึทืึทืช ืึดืฆึผึทืึฐืขึนืชึธืื, referring to Chavaโs creation from one of Adamโs ribs, which is the first time the word ืึทืึทืช appears in the Torah. Chazal explain that when Hakadosh Baruch Hu formed Chava, He was concerned about what might result from her creation. But when He saw that there would one day be this great woman, this ย ืึดืฉึผืึธื ืึทืึทืช ืึดื ึผึฐืฉืึตื ืึฐื ึตื ืึทื ึผึฐืึดืืึดืื who would recognize the danger of the hashpaas hasevivah and be moser nefesh and daven incessantly until her children are spared from the clutches of Yehoram and his bad hashpaah, then He decided to create Chava.
May we learn from the story of Korach to withstand the negative hashpaas hasevivah, and may we be zocheh to always be in the presence of positive hashpaโos and merit, like Ovadya Hanavi, to see the eventual downfall of Malchus Edom.
