Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz Shlita

Holding On for Dear Life

Purim

Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz Shlita

The Chofetz Chaim (cited in the Pesichah to Sefer Shalmei Todah, p. 12) derives an important lesson from Mordechaiโ€™s refusal to bow to Haman. Achashverosh decreed that everyone had to bow down to Haman, but Mordechai defied this order: ื•ึผืžึธืจึฐื“ึณึผื›ึทื™ ืœึนื ื™ึดื›ึฐืจึทืข ื•ึฐืœึนื ื™ึดืฉึฐืืชึทึผื—ึฒื•ึถื”. Why? Because Haman made himself a god, so it was forbidden to bow to him.

The Chofetz Chaim brings the Midrash that teaches that Klal Yisrael warned Mordechai that if he would not bow down, he would cause Haman to hate the Yidden, and terrible things would happen โ€” antisemitism would rise in Persia (modern-day Iran), which would lead to big problems. And it did. But even so, Mordechai said, โ€œBut the halachah is that bowing is forbidden โ€” itโ€™s ื™ื”ืจื’ ื•ืืœ ื™ืขื‘ืจ! I have to keep the Torah!โ€ He held strong, and even after Haman made his decree to annihilate the Yidden, he still refused to bow.

This, says the Chofetz Chaim, teaches us a lesson for life, and for the galus weโ€™re in now. So often, we feel pressured not to keep Torah and mitzvos โ€” but we learn from Mordechai to be ืœึนื ื™ึดื›ึฐืจึทืข ื•ึฐืœึนื ื™ึดืฉึฐืืชึทึผื—ึฒื•ึถื”, to do the right thing, holding strong to Torah and mitzvos rather than submitting to the waves of society.

What happened at the end? Because of Hamanโ€™s decree, Klal Yisrael experienced a major yeshuah. That day was turned over, and the Yidden took revenge against the Amalekim and killed their leader, Haman, along with tens of thousands of Jew-haters. So because Mordechai refused to bow, a great yeshuah happened to Klal Yisrael.

The Gemara (Megillah 12) asks, why were the Yidden subjected to this decree in the time of Haman? The second explanation in the Gemara, which is the maskana, is that it was because they bowed down to the tzelem of Nevuchadnezzaar. Although they did not technically worship an idol, the fact that superficially they seemed to be doing so spurred Hakadosh Baruch Hu to bring this decree upon them.

What was their cheit? That they were not mekadesh Shem Shomayim because they were afraid of Nevuchadnezzar. And what was the tikkun? That Mordechai faced a similar nisayon and held strong, refusing to bow to Haman. The avodah of one Yid, then, served as the tikkun for all of Klal Yisrael. Every person, even in this galus, who does something thatโ€™s hard for him, has the power to be mesaken for all the Yidden.

What did Mordechai do? He strengthened his bitachon that Hashem would be there for him and help him โ€” and that is what happened. By doing so, he rectified the reason for the gezeirah.

After reading the Megillah, we say Shoshanas Yaakov, which includes the words Both the Brisker Rav and the Sfas Emes point out that these words come to highlight the theme of the Megillah, which is the power of bitachon. Mordechai placed his bitachon in Hashem, as evidenced by his refusal to bow to Haman. He held strong in his beliefs, and steadfastly kept Torah and mitzvos.

This is not just a one-time event in history, but a lesson for all generations.

The True Source of Salvation

We can draw another lesson from Mordechaiโ€™s bitachon.

When a decree like that of Haman is made, the natural reaction is to try to utilize political connections to overturn it. Even today, askanim approach people in the government any time a law is enacted or proposed that could be harmful to Yidden. This approach would have the simplest course of action for Mordechai, whose own wife was a member of the government. Yet we find something interesting: His first reaction was He davened and fasted, and only then did he approach Esther for assistance.

Many people feel that theyโ€™re very powerful and influential, and that they can manage their own lives through kochi vโ€™otzem yadi. Mordechai understood, however, that as much influence as he had in the government, and as much power as he possessed, the real yeshuah would come only from Hashem. The first thing he did was daven, and place his hope in Hashem. Likewise, Esther instructed that all of the Jews of Shushan should fast for three days โ€” as she and her maidservants did โ€” and she davened powerfully; even as she was approaching Achashverosh, she was davening.

Mordechai and Esther davened and placed their trust in Hashem, and thatโ€™s what brought about the yeshuah.

The Gemara in Megillah expounds Mordechaiโ€™s name as a series of allusions to tefillah: He is called ben Kish because he โ€œknockedโ€ (ื”ืงื™ืฉ) on the doors of Heaven with his davening, and he is referred to as ben Yair because he illuminated the eyes of the Jewish people with his davening. Chazal are emphasizing that the yeshuah came about through tefillah.

Many people daven for yeshuos, but they give up after a while; itโ€™s too hard to keep davening. From Mordechai we learn the lesson of ืงึทื•ึตึผื” ืึถืœ ื”’ ื—ึฒื–ึทืง ื•ึฐื™ึทืึฒืžึตืฅ ืœึดื‘ึถึผืšึธ ื•ึฐืงึทื•ึตึผื” ืึถืœ ื”’ โ€” keep on hoping, even if the situation seems dire. His tefillos were an expression of his bitachon in Hashem: โ€œI put my hope in You, and Iโ€™m not giving up.โ€

Mordechaiโ€™s bitachon expressed itself both in his refusal to bow to Haman and in his powerful tefillos, and that is what brought about the yeshuah.

This is the message of Purim, for all generations, and this message illuminates our lives and keeps us strong in the galus weโ€™re in now, the galus of Eisav (Amalekโ€™s grandfather). Donโ€™t give up! Keep on davening and hold strong, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu will help you: ืœึฐื”ื•ึนื“ึดื™ืขึท ืฉึถืื›ึธึผืœ ืงึนื•ึถื™ืšึธ ืœึนื ื™ึตื‘ึนืฉืื•ึผ.

One Person can Save Everyone

The Chofetz Chaim adds another beautiful idea. The Gemara (Shabbos 88) teaches that during the time of Achashverosh, the Yidden reaccepted the Torah. Why was it specifically the nes of Purim that triggered this wholehearted acceptance of the Torah, hundreds of years after it was given to them at Har Sinai?

Until this point, the Yidden were afraid that the Torah would not be able to sustain them in every situation. But when they saw that Mordechaiโ€™s clinging to the Torah, by refusing to bow to Haman, is what brought about a massive yeshuah for Klal Yisrael, they understood that the Torah is the only thing that could sustain them under all circumstances. Even when it seems bad and hard, keeping the Torah is really for our benefit, and in the end we will enjoy tremendous berachah from it. This prompted them to reaccept the Torah at the time of Achashverosh.

Mordechai served as an inspiration for all of Klal Yisrael to reaccept the Torah. This is what a person accomplishes when he holds steadfastly to the Torah. The tzaddikim among us, and the chashuveh talmidei chachamim, and even those special baalei batim who are mekadesh Shem Shomayim, are an inspiration for all of us. When we witness such Yidden being moser nefesh, it motivates everyone to reaccept the Torah.

Purim is a day of simchah. What is the simchah of Purim? The Gemara (Megillah 10b) interprets the passuk ืชึผึทื—ึทืช ื”ึทื ึผึทืขึฒืฆื•ึผืฅ ื™ึทืขึฒืœึถื” ื‘ึฐืจื•ึนืฉื ื•ึฐืชึทื—ึทืช ื”ึทืกึผึดืจึฐืคึผึทื“ ื™ึทืขึฒืœึถื” ื”ึฒื“ึทืก as an allusion to the story of the Megillah: In place of Haman, Mordechai arose, and in place of Vashti, Esther arose. This hints to what will happen leโ€™asid lavo. In our world, reshaโ€™im appear to be flourishing, but you should know that a day of yeshuos will come when the tzaddikim will walk into the homes of the reshaโ€™im. That brings tremendous simchah, and that is the simchah that Purim empowers us with โ€” that we know that there will be a day of yeshuos for all those who maintained their bitachon in Hashem: ืœึฐื”ื•ึนื“ึดื™ืขึท ืฉึถืื›ึธึผืœ ืงึนื•ึถื™ืšึธ ืœึนื ื™ึตื‘ึนืฉืื•ึผ ื•ึฐืœึนื ื™ึดื›ึธึผืœึฐืžื•ึผ ืœึธื ึถืฆึทื—.

Regarding the passuk ืœึดื™ืฉืื•ึผืขึธืชึฐืšึธ ืงึดื•ึดึผื™ืชึดื™ ื”’ึธ, in Parashas Vayechi, the Midrash teaches that everything comes in the zechus of kivuy, hoping: Avraham and the other Avos were saved bโ€™zechus hakivuy, as were the Yidden in Mitzrayim, who placed their trust in Hashem. Similarly, the future geulah will happen when we place our biachon in Hashem, which will bring about yeshuos and berachos from Hashem: ื‘ึธึผืจื•ึผืšึฐ ื”ึทื’ึถึผื‘ึถืจ ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื™ึดื‘ึฐื˜ึทื— ื‘ึทึผื”’.

Hashem should help us place our bitachon in Him and hold strong, knowing that this will open the gates of blessing for us. We should all see geulos and yeshuos and be filled with simchah: ื”ึธืคึทื›ึฐืชึธึผ ืžึดืกึฐืคึฐึผื“ึดื™ ืœึฐืžึธื—ื•ึนืœ ืœึดื™.
