The Tears of Elul

Parashas Ki Seitzei

Harav Hagaon Yehuda Wagshal shlita

Regarding the eishes yefas toar, the passuk says, ื•ึผื‘ึธื›ึฐืชึธื” ืึถืช ืึธื‘ึดื™ื”ึธ ื•ึฐืึถืช ืึดืžึธึผื”ึผ ื™ึถืจึทื— ื™ึธืžึดื™ื, and the Arizal says that this month of crying โ€” ื™ึถืจึทื— ื™ึธืžึดื™ื โ€” is an allusion to Chodesh Elul, a time when a Yid is supposed to cry. The section of the Yesod Vโ€™shoresh Haโ€™avodah that discusses Elul is actually called โ€œShaar Hamayim,โ€ and the author explains that this is because Elul is a time when our tears flow like water.

The crying during Elul is normally understood as an expression of remorse, or fear, or worry for the future โ€” in other words, the avodah of yirah learning up to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. On one hand, then, it sounds as though the avodah of Elul is yirah. On the other hand, we all know, as the Mishnah Berurah teaches, that the name โ€œElulโ€ stands for ืึฒื ึดื™ ืœึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ื•ึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ืœึดื™, which is an expression of kirvah and ahavah. So what is the essence of Chodesh Elul? Is it a month of crying and fear and worry, or is it a month of kirvah and ahavas Hashem?

In truth, the idea that the month preceding Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is a time of ahavah is difficult to understand. The avodah of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is, of course, yirah, and the ahavah comes afterwards, on Succos. That makes sense: first come yirah and teshuvah and taharah, and then, once weโ€™re purified, weโ€™re ready for the kirvah to Hashem and the ahavah. How, then, can the ahavah โ€” ืึฒื ึดื™ ืœึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ื•ึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ืœึดื™ โ€” come already in Elul, before the yirah?

Perhaps we can explain this as follows. In Parashas Nitzavim, Hashem tells us that eventually, while we are among the nations, weโ€™ll do teshuvah: ื•ึฐื”ึธื™ึธื” ื›ึดื™ ื™ึธื‘ึนืื•ึผ ืขึธืœึถื™ืšึธ ื›ึธึผืœ ื”ึทื“ึฐึผื‘ึธืจึดื™ื ื”ึธืึตืœึถึผื” ื”ึทื‘ึฐึผืจึธื›ึธื” ื•ึฐื”ึทืงึฐึผืœึธืœึธื” ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื ึธืชึทืชึดึผื™ ืœึฐืคึธื ึถื™ืšึธ ื•ึทื”ึฒืฉึตืื‘ึนืชึธ ืึถืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ ื‘ึฐึผื›ึธืœ ื”ึทื’ึผื•ึนื™ึดื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดื“ึดึผื™ื—ึฒืšึธ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ืฉึธืืžึธึผื”. But the next passuk says, ื•ึฐืฉึทืื‘ึฐืชึธึผ ืขึทื“ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ื•ึฐืฉึธืืžึทืขึฐืชึธึผ ื‘ึฐืงึนืœื•ึน, conveying again that we will do teshuvah. Why are there two expressions of teshuvah here? Furthermore, what is the meaning of the phrase ื•ึทื”ึฒืฉึตืื‘ึนืชึธ ืึถืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ? We can understand that we are returning to Hashem, as the second passuk says ื•ึฐืฉึทืื‘ึฐืชึธึผ ืขึทื“ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ, but what does it mean to return to your heart?

The Voice in Our Hearts

Weโ€™ve been saying every day in Lโ€™Dovid Hashem the passuk ืœึฐืšึธ ืึธืžึทืจ ืœึดื‘ึดึผื™ ื‘ึทึผืงึฐึผืฉืื•ึผ ืคึธื ึธื™ ืึถืช ืคึธึผื ึถื™ืšึธ ื”’ ืึฒื‘ึทืงึตึผืฉื, the meaning of which is very unclear. โ€œTo You my heart says, seek out my faceโ€ โ€” what does that mean?

Rashi explains that ืœึฐืšึธ ืึธืžึทืจ ืœึดื‘ึดึผื™ doesnโ€™t mean to You, but rather โ€œon Your behalf,โ€ meaning that our heart is a shaliach of Hakadosh Baruch Hu that calls out to us and says, โ€œSeek Me out.โ€ To this call of the heart on Hashemโ€™s behalf, Dovid Hamelech responded, โ€œI am going to heed this call โ€” ืึถืช ืคึธึผื ึถื™ืšึธ ื”’ ืึฒื‘ึทืงึตึผืฉื.โ€

Rashi is conveying a remarkable insight here. Sometimes, a person who is not in the greatest situation suddenly experiences a hisorerus of teshuvah, and feels an urge to change and improve. The person might interpret this feeling as a guilty conscience, or a feeling of inspiration, but really itโ€™s much more than that โ€” itโ€™s Hakadosh Baruch Hu speaking via our heart, which is His shaliach. We know that shlucho shel adam kโ€™moso, so our heart is Hashemโ€™s mouthpiece, calling us to do teshuvah.

โ€œMy heart acted as a shaliach of Hashem,โ€ says Dovid Hamelech, โ€œtelling me, โ€˜Seek out My face โ€” look for Me!โ€™โ€ And Dovid responded by seeking Hashem.

At the moment of hisorerus in the heart, the person is not necessarily in any better shape than he was before; heโ€™s still stuck in the same dirt that he was before. Perhaps this is the meaning of the passuk in Nitzavim that states, ื•ึทื”ึฒืฉึตืื‘ึนืชึธ ืึถืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ ื‘ึฐึผื›ึธืœ ื”ึทื’ึผื•ึนื™ึดื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดื“ึดึผื™ื—ึฒืšึธ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ืฉึธืืžึธึผื” โ€” youโ€™re still among the nations, in the dirt and darkness of the galus, but from that place you return to your heart, meaning that you respond to the hisorerus of your heart and do not brush it away or dismiss it as mere pangs of conscience. Rather, you respond to the calling of your heart, which is acting as an agent of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. You havenโ€™t done teshuvah yet or changed your ways, but you respond to the call of your heart, taking it seriously, and that will eventually bring you to true teshuvah, as indicated in the words ืึถืช ืคึธึผื ึถื™ืšึธ ื”’ ืึฒื‘ึทืงึตึผืฉื and also in the next passuk in Nitzavim, ื•ึฐืฉึทืื‘ึฐืชึธึผ ืขึทื“ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ื•ึฐืฉึธืืžึทืขึฐืชึธึผ ื‘ึฐืงึนืœื•ึน.

Those are the two stages of teshuvah: first, the person responds to the call of his heart, and then he returns to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

Longing for Hashem

We can now gain a deeper understanding of the crying of Chodesh Elul. On one hand, crying is usually a sign of yirah, an expression of worry and pain, so how does that fit with the ahavah and ani lโ€™dodi of Elul?

We can explain this with an analogy to a person who was separated from his parents for a long time, and suddenly, someone arrives bearing a message from his long-lost parents. Itโ€™s very possible that his first reaction will be to break down in tears โ€” not because he is afraid of his parents, but because the renewed connection with them triggered intense yearning for them. He suddenly becomes acutely aware of how much he misses them, and he starts to cry.

Thatโ€™s the crying of Chodesh Elul. This crying is represented by the eishes yefas toar, who cries because she misses her parents: ื•ึผื‘ึธื›ึฐืชึธื” ืึถืช ืึธื‘ึดื™ื”ึธ ื•ึฐืึถืช ืึดืžึธึผื”ึผ. Similarly, Chodesh Elul is a time of crying out of yearning for Hashem and missing Him.

Even before we arrive at the days of teshuvah โ€” Rosh Hashanah, Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, and Yom Kippur โ€” we experience a time of ื•ึทื”ึฒืฉึตืื‘ึนืชึธ ืึถืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ, when we hear the call of our heart on Hashemโ€™s behalf and heed that call. Our tears at this time are not tears of fear and worry, but rather tears of love and longing. Afterwards, we come to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which are days of yirah and teshuvah, in preparation of the ultimate kirvah and encounter with Hakadosh Baruch Hu on Succos.

So there are three stages in this process. First, there is the ahavah of ani lโ€™dodi, which is expressed in our tearful longing during Elul as we cleanse ourselves in preparation for the second stage, our meeting with Hashem on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the days of yirah. The third stage is the ahavah of Succos, which is a time of ื”ึฑื‘ึดื™ืึทื ึดื™ ื”ึทืžึถึผืœึถืšึฐ ื—ึฒื“ึธืจึธื™ื•, when Hakadosh Baruch Hu brings us into His home.

We all have a Yiddishe heart, and that heart calls out to us, prompting us to feel that we need to change. This is really Hakadosh Baruch Hu calling. But not every person is zocheh to hear that shlichus, and we arenโ€™t zocheh to hear it all the time. If our heart is truly an agent of Hashem, then why donโ€™t we hear that calling?

Will You Hear Your Heart?

Perhaps the answer is alluded to in another instruction regarding the eishes yefas toar: ื•ึฐืขึธืฉึฐื‚ืชึธื” ืึถืช ืฆึดืคึธึผืจึฐื ึถื™ื”ึธ. The Arizal sees this as an allusion to the need to minimize luxuries during Chodesh Elul. A person should have what he needs, but in Elul he should avoid unnecessary extras, which are symbolized by nails, which are extraneous to the body, and which the Torah commands that the eishes toar cut off. The message to us is to get rid of the luxuries and manage with what you need; you donโ€™t have to indulge in everything that you want.

Now, the value of limiting our gashmiyus is a constant avodah. Why, then, is it specifically connected to the month of Elul?

Perhaps this is connected to the idea that in Elul we hear the call of our heart on Hashemโ€™s behalf, as expressed in the words ืœึฐืšึธ ืึธืžึทืจ ืœึดื‘ึดึผื™ ื‘ึทึผืงึฐึผืฉืื•ึผ ืคึธื ึธื™ and ื•ึทื”ึฒืฉึตืื‘ึนืชึธ ืึถืœ ืœึฐื‘ึธื‘ึถืšึธ.

The avodah of Elul is to hear that call, but the reason we donโ€™t always hear our heart speaking as Hashemโ€™s representative is that our heart is sometimes hijacked by other pursuits and desires, so it draws us to other things. If we want to hear the voice of our heart speaking on Hashemโ€™s behalf, then we need to minimize our gashmiyus and luxuries at this time, at least somewhat, so that our heart is open to Hashemโ€™s call, and not wrapped up in extravagances.

May we all be zocheh to hear that call of ืœึฐืšึธ ืึธืžึทืจ ืœึดื‘ึดึผื™, and may we also merit the next step, during the Yamim Noraim, of ืึถืช ืคึธึผื ึถื™ืšึธ ื”’ ืึฒื‘ึทืงึตึผืฉื.
