Harav Hagaon Ahron David Shlita

The Purpose of the World

Parshas Ki Savo

Harav Hagaon Ahron David

Parshas Ki Savo contains the mitzvah of bikkurim, which is a very remarkable mitzvah. The Alshich here cites the Midrash that teaches that the opening passuk of the Torah, ื‘ึฐึผืจึตืืฉึดืื™ืช ื‘ึธึผืจึธื ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื, implies bishvil reishis โ€” for the sake of several things that are called โ€œreishis,โ€ one of which is bikkurim, which are called reishis. Hashem created the world for bikkurim!

What is so special about bikkurim that makes it the very reason for the worldโ€™s creation?

The Alshich explains that the reason Hashem made the world is so that we should recognize that He is the master of the world and thank Him for all that He does for us. Human nature is such that we think we are the ones who do and accomplish We think that everything is us, and whatever we have is in our own zechus, since we are learning Torah, performing mitzvos, and doing chessed, so we think weโ€™re earning all these zechusim. But that is not the case! Hashem is the One Who made the world, and whatever He gives us is an unearned gift. He wants us to thank him, and to realize that He made the world and is giving us everything for free.

The Chovos Halevavos says, in Shaar Habitachon, that if we were to combine all our mitzvos, and all that we have accomplished in our life, we still would not be able to repay Hashem for even one chessed of His, for one drink of water.

The tachlis habriah is that we should recognize that Hashem gave us everything we have. When the Midrash says that the world was created just for reishis โ€” the mitzvah of bikkurim โ€” it is conveying that thanking Hashem for what he gave us is the very purpose of creation.

The Ramban teaches, in Parshas Bo, that the purpose of creation is for us to thank Hashem and recognize that He has created us. We are not here by ourselves โ€” Hashem made us, and by recognizing that we amass zechusim.

Rโ€™ Akiva Eiger says that if you thank Hashem, thatโ€™s a reason for Him to give you more, as the passuk states (Tehillim 51) ื–ึนื‘ึตื—ึท ืชึผื•ึนื“ึธื” ื™ึฐื›ึทื‘ึฐึผื“ึธื ึฐื ึดื™ ื•ึฐืฉึธื‚ื ื“ึถึผืจึถืšึฐ

ืึทืจึฐืึถื ึผื•ึผ ื‘ึฐึผื™ึตืฉึทืืข ืึฑืœึนืงึดื™ื, conveying that someone who thanks Hashem will gain His salvation.

The Sefer HaChinuch famously teaches that if a person says Bircas Hamazon carefully, with kavanah, Hashem will grant him parnassah all his life bโ€™chavod. Unbelievable! People work day and night for a living, pushing themselves in all sorts of ways to find employment and earn money, yet here the Chinuch is giving us advice for how to secure a livelihood.

If we bentch carefully, word for word, from a siddur, and say, โ€œThank You Hashem โ€” thank You for the food, thank You for what You have given me,โ€ then Hashem says, โ€œYouโ€™re thanking me? Iโ€™ll give you parnassah all your life.โ€

Thatโ€™s because the purpose of creation is for us to thank Hashem and realize that everything we have is not in our own merit, but from Him.

Thankfulness Brings Berachah

The Alshich brings a mashal of an aris (sharecropper) who works a field and receives a quarter or a third of the crops as payment. He brings the beautiful produce to the owner of the field and says, โ€œEverything is yours! Iโ€™m showing you how beautiful your fruits are and thanking you for the field, and here are the first fruits as a present to you.โ€ Hearing this, the owner says, โ€œYouโ€™re thanking me? You recognize that Iโ€™m the owner? Iโ€™ll give it all to you!โ€

Likewise, Hashem tells us to thank Him, and realize that He is the One giving to us, and that recognition of ours alone is a fulfillment of the purpose of creation. Indeed, when we say in Ahavah Rabbah, ื•ึฐืงึตืจึทื‘ึฐืชึธึผื ื•ึผ ืœึฐืฉึดืืžึฐืšึธ ื”ึทื’ึธึผื“ื•ึนืœ ืกึถืœึธื” ื‘ึถึผืึฑืžึถืช ืœึฐื”ื•ึนื“ื•ึนืช ืœึฐืšึธ, we are conveying that the reason Hashem drew us near to Him is ืœึฐื”ื•ึนื“ื•ึนืช ืœึฐืšึธ, to thank Him!

In a similar vein, the Seder Hayom, who lived hundreds of years ago, says that if a person says Asher Yatzar with kavanah, thanking Hashem for giving him a functioning body, then he will never need a doctor. As weโ€™ve explained, thatโ€™s because when we thank Hashem, we are fulfilling the purpose of the world! How many people suffer, lo aleinu, from terrible diseases? Yet the secret to good health, as the Seder Hayom teaches, is to thank Hashem for our body.

When R’ Avigdor Miller ztโ€l was already past 90 years of age, he observed that he still has all his teeth; unlike many elderly people, he had not lost a single tooth. He attributed this marvel to the fact that he thanked Hashem for his teeth every day. Since he gave thanks for his teeth, Hashem preserved them for him.

Itโ€™s very important, therefore, to say berachos carefully โ€” shehakol nihiyeh bโ€™dvaro, borei pri ha’eitz, etc. โ€” and to bentch well. Likewise, each day, when we say birchos hashachar, we should give heartfelt thanks to Hashem for our eyes, for the ability to walk, and for everything else He gives us. So say it well! Say it from a siddur, standing! Donโ€™t say it while walking around.

Gratitude for the Year

Weโ€™re coming up to Rosh Hashanah now, and this is the time to thank Hashem for the entire year that He just gave us. Say, โ€œThank you Hashem for a year of life!โ€ Thank Him for giving you health, parnassah, children, and everything else!

Just thanking Hashem is a great zechus. Everything that we have is a chessed from Hashem, and we receive His gifts all day long. He is constantly helping us in so many ways. Even after we learn, we should thank Hashem, with the tefillah of R’ Nechuniah ben Hakanah, for the special portion He granted us, His people.

The very name โ€œYehudiโ€ evokes the concept of gratitude, as Leah said, when she named her son Yehudah, ื”ึทืคึทึผืขึทื ืื•ึนื“ึถื” ืึถืช ื”’. The more you thank Hashem, the more of a Yehudi you are.

The Sfas Emes explains that a Yid approaches Hashem with hodaah, as alluded to in the words ื•ึทื™ึดึผื’ึทึผืฉื ืึตืœึธื™ื• ื™ึฐื”ื•ึผื“ึธื”.

Hashem should help us emulate R’ Avigdor Miller and thank Him for all His gifts, in a genuine way. And He should grant us all a good year, a year of health, simchos, shidduchim, children, parnassah bโ€™shefa, and all the berachos. We should grow and grow in Torah and yiras Shamayim and have nachas from all our children and much hatzlachah.
