Heralding the Return of the Lion

Parashas Devarim/Nine Days

Harav Hagaon Moshe Aharon Friedman shlita

Sefer Devarim, and specifically Parashas Devarim, is a mussar shmuess that comes as a Mishneh Torah after the other four Chumashim. The sefer of Mishneh Torah encompasses the fundamentals of avodas Hashem: ahavah, dveikus, the Aseres Hadibros, Shema Yisrael, and that is prefaced with the mussar shmuess of Parashas Devarim. The passuk says, ืจึตืืฉึดืื™ืช ื—ึธื›ึฐืžึธื” ื™ึดืจึฐืึทืช ื”’, and these ideas of yiras Shamayim serve as a hakdamah to the Mishneh Torah.

The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh notes that the words of the first passuk of Devarim โ€”ืึตืœึผึถื” ื”ึทื“ึผึฐื‘ึธืจึดื™ื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ื“ึผึดื‘ึผึถืจ ืžึนืฉืึถื” ืึถืœ ื›ึผึธืœ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ ื‘ึผึฐืขึตื‘ึถืจ ื”ึทื™ึผึทืจึฐื“ึผึตืŸ ื‘ึผึทืžึผึดื“ึฐื‘ึผึธืจ ื‘ึผึธืขึฒืจึธื‘ึธื” ืžื•ึนืœ ืกื•ึผืฃ ื‘ึผึตื™ืŸ ืคึผึธืืจึธืŸ ื•ึผื‘ึตื™ืŸ ืชึผึนืคึถืœ ื•ึฐืœึธื‘ึธืŸ ื•ึทื—ึฒืฆึตืจึนืช ื•ึฐื“ึดื™ ื–ึธื”ึธื‘ โ€” allude to different points regarding middos and yiras Shamayim. The word ื‘ึผึฐืขึตื‘ึถืจ evokes the middah of Avraham Avinu, who was an โ€œIvri,โ€ standing on the other side. The word ื”ึทื™ึผึทืจึฐื“ึผึตืŸ hints to Chazalโ€™s teaching (Berachos 7) regarding the value of a mussar shmuess: ื˜ื•ื‘ื” ืžืจื“ื•ืช ืื—ืช ื‘ืœื‘ื• ืฉืœ ืื“ื ืžืžืื” ืžืœืงื™ื•ืช. The word ื‘ึผึทืžึผึดื“ึฐื‘ึผึธืจ is a remez to the middah of anavah, while ื‘ึผึธืขึฒืจึธื‘ึธื” is instructive of the balance that a person requires with regard to humility: it should be with areivus, not to an extreme. And ืžื•ึนืœ ืกื•ึผืฃ implies that one should contemplate the day of death, recognizing what his tachlis is and seeing his end (sof) before (mul) his eyes.

The next words, ื‘ึผึตื™ืŸ ืคึผึธืืจึธืŸ ื•ึผื‘ึตื™ืŸ ืชึผึนืคึถืœ, are a remez for the idea expressed in the Chovos Halevavos that ื”ืคืจื•ืฉ ืฆื”ืœืชื• ื‘ืคื ื™ื• ื•ื“ืื’ืชื• ื‘ืœื‘ื•; Paran referring to the joy that should be on a personโ€™s face and Tofel referring to worry in his heart. The word ื•ึฐืœึธื‘ึธืŸ alludes to a lev tahor, a pure heart; ื•ึทื—ึฒืฆึตืจึนืช hints to Yaakov Avinu, who was yosheiv ohalim, with the hasmadah and kvius ittim that entails; and ื•ึฐื“ึดื™ ื–ึธื”ึธื‘ evokes the concept of histapkus bโ€™muat and being sameiach bโ€™chelko, in the sense of saying to zahav, โ€œDai โ€” enough.โ€

Rashi teaches that every word here also implies a tochachah for various sins that the Yidden committed in the past, and the Ohr Hachaim is explaining beautifully how every word in the passuk is also a mussar shmuess.

The passuk in Hoshea says, I heard, bโ€™derech drush, that this is hinting that you should take Sefer Devarim and return to Hashem. Sefer Devarim, and specifically Parashas Devarim, revolves around the concept of coming closer to Hashem.

We are now in the period of Bein Hametzarim, about which the passuk says, The word ืจึนื“ึฐืคึถื™ื”ึธ can be read as rodfei Kah, implying that one who desires kirvas Hashem can attain it at this time. It is no coincidence that this time of year always coincides with Parashas Devarim

With Hashem, or Without?

Another major mussar shmuess in Parashas Devarim is reflected in the words The Midrash teaches that the name โ€œNachal Zaredโ€ indicates that it was only a zeres wide โ€” half an amah, or a foot (30 centimeters) according to the measurements of the Chazon Ish. Nevertheless, the Yidden in the Midbar could not cross it for 38 years. The Yam Suf, in contrast, was a raging sea, yet Hakadosh Baruch Hu split the Yam Suf for them.

We see from here that a person has no power to do anything unless it is decreed from Above. When Hashem wills it, the sea flees, but when He does not, then even a stream half an amah wide is impassable.

The saying goes, โ€œMit di Ribbono Shel Olam ken mir di yam shpaltenโ€ โ€” with Hashemโ€™s help you can split the sea, but without His help, you canโ€™t even get through the door.

Later in the parashah, the passuk says, Regarding the word ื•ึผืžึทืฉึทึผื‚ืึฒื›ึถื, Rashi comments, ืžืœืžื“ ืฉื”ื™ื• ืืคื™ืงื•ืจืกื™ืŸ. Rashi offers elaboration, but perhaps we can explain that the word ื•ึผืžึทืฉึทึผื‚ืึฒื›ึถื implies apikorsus because it indicates that the person views his burden as his own: ื•ึผืžึทืฉึทึผื‚ืึฒื›ึถื. He is carrying the heavy load? Thatโ€™s apikorsus! The Ribbono Shel Olam is carrying your load!

This idea is expressed the beautiful words of Rav Meir of Apta:

The Number 216

The is another message that we learn from Sefer Devarim.

We mentioned that Sefer Devarim teaches us about yiras Hashem. The word ื™ืจืื” has the gematria 216, as does the word aryeh, which has the same letters. The word gevurah also has the same gematria. Aryeh, the lion, is the mazel of Chodesh Av. The Nine Days from Rosh Chodesh Av until Tisha b’Av encompass 216 hours: 9 x 24 = 216. These are the days of yirah, represented by the lion. Indeed, the Midrash says that the โ€œlionโ€ โ€” Nevuchadnezzar, as the passuk says,ืขึธืœึธื” ืึทืจึฐื™ึตื” ืžึดืกึผึปื‘ึผึฐื›ื•ึน ย (Yirmiyah 4:7) โ€” ascended during the mazel of aryeh, meaning Av, and destroyed Ariel, meaning the Beis Hamikdash, which was referred to as such because its shape resembled that of a lion. The Midrash adds that this was in order that Hashem โ€” Who is called โ€œAryeh,โ€ in the passuk ืึทืจึฐื™ึตื” ืฉืึธืึธื’ ืžึดื™ ืœึนื ื™ึดื™ืจึธื (Amos 3:8) โ€” should come during the mazel of aryeh, Chodesh Av, and rebuild Ariel.

The fire on the mizbeiach was in the shape of a lion, because the lion represents the power of the Shechinah. Chodesh Av is the month of aryeh, the month of yirah and gevurah. Similarly, the words ืืœื” ืžืกืขื™ in last weekโ€™s parashah have the gematria of 216, because those travels were one long manifestation of yirah and gevurah. Chessed has a gematria of 72, and three times 72 equals 216, which is also the gematria of Chavakuk, a name that connotes โ€œembrace.โ€ Thatโ€™s what Chodesh Av โ€” โ€œFatherโ€ โ€” is really about. Sometimes we get a potch from Avinu Shebashamayim, but we have to realize that the ultimate chessed is gevurah.

Why is gevurah three times chessed? Perhaps we can suggest that this reflects Chazalโ€™s mathematical insight that the circumference of a circle is always three times its diameter (roughly the number we refer to as โ€œpiโ€). So the ultimate chessed, chessed, chessed is gevurah. When we reach the recognition, finally, that when Hakadosh Baruch Hu punishes us He is, in essence, extending triple chessed, then indeed, the Lion can come and rebuild Ariel, which was destroyed with fire and will be reconstructed with fire.

We should be zocheh to the geulah sheleimah.
