Tarshish, Harav Hagaon Peretz Shlita

Parshas Chukas

Harav Hagaon Rav Peretz Tarshish Shlita

Parshas Chukas is the parshah of taharah, the parshah of Parah Adumah. In this parshah we have a chiddush in hilchos tumah. Back in Sefer Vayikra โ€” Parshas Shemini, Tazria, Metzora โ€” we already learned about various types of tumos. Thereโ€™s tumas maga, and there are also tumos that come upon a person even without direct physical contact; just carrying the item would be metamei, as in the case of a neveilah. Then thereโ€™s tumas mishkav uโ€™moshav of a zav or zavah, which comes upon a person just from sitting on a chair that a zav sat on.

Tumas ohel is different, however, because it involves no physical contact whatsoever. Just being in the same ohel, in the same house or under the same covering as a meis, brings tumah.

Another chiddush in hilchos tumah is the concept of tumah retzutzah. The halachah is that the tumah of a meis that is tightly contained by something โ€” but not an ohel โ€” is bokeiโ€™a vโ€™oleh ad harakia; it extends upward to the sky. This gives rise to many shailos, such as those related to planes flying over a cemetery.

What can we take out of these halachos, which seem incomprehensible? What can we learn from the concept that just being in a house where there is a meis, without any contact, is metamei, or from the idea that a meis is metamei all the way to the rakia, which is not the case with any other tumah?

Weโ€™ll suggest the following explanation.

The concept of tumas meis is an outcome of cheit. Adam HaRishon was supposed remain in Gan Eden, but because he sinned, he wasnโ€™t zocheh to that, and was instead banished and punished, eventually, with death.

As long as a person is alive, there is no tumas meis. Death is the absence of life, the punishment incurred by Adam HaRishon, and tumah is the outcome of that punishment. Where there could have been chiyus, where there could have been light, where there could have been tikkun โ€” in its place thereโ€™s a lifeless body. The person had potential to grow, but now that potential is taken away. That is tumah.

The Gemara (Sanhedrin 38b) tells us about the stature of Adam HaRishon: ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื”ื•ื“ื” ืืžืจ ืจื‘: ืื“ื ื”ืจืืฉื•ืŸ ืžืกื•ืฃ ื”ืขื•ืœื ื•ืขื“ ืกื•ืคื• ื”ื™ื”, ืฉื ืืžืจ ืœึฐืžึดืŸ ื”ึทื™ึผื•ึนื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ื‘ึผึธืจึธื ืึฑืœึนื”ึดื™ื ืึธื“ึธื ืขึทืœ ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ื•ึผืžึดืงึฐืฆึตื” ื”ึทืฉึผืึธืžึทื™ึดื ื•ึฐืขึทื“ ืงึฐืฆึตื” ื”ึทืฉึผืึธืžึธื™ึดื โ€” Adam HaRishon extended from one end of the earth to the other. The Gemara also gives this description:ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ืืœืขื–ืจ: ืื“ื ื”ืจืืฉื•ืŸ ืžืŸ ื”ืืจืฅ ื•ืขื“ ืœืจืงื™ืข ื”ื™ื” โ€” Adam HaRishon was so tall that he reached the rakia.

Clearly, Adam HaRishon wasnโ€™t a simple person. He spanned from one edge of the earth to the other. His feet were on the ground, and his head reached the very heavens.

Adam HaRishon was capable of reaching the rakia, but he lost that koach with misah. Correspondingly, tumah retzutzah is bokeiโ€™a vโ€™oleh ad harakia. Adam HaRishon had a presence that extended from one end of the world to the other. And so too, his guf, which remains, is metamei from one edge to the other in the ohel hameis, the place of the meis.

This is the result of cheit. On one hand, we see what could have been accomplished, and, on the other hand, we see what cheit has wrought.

Filled with Light

This is all in the negative. Now weโ€™d like to bring out the positive โ€” zeh lโ€™umas zeh.

The Gemara (Sotah 12) teaches that when Moshe Rabbeinu was born, the house was filled with light. He was called Tovia; ohr is tov. The entire bayis was filled with light, even though, again, there was no physical contact, because the essence of Moshe Rabbeinu is ohr, is tov.

Similarly, the metzius of Torah is ohr. Torah is able to spread โ€” and even if one may not be touching the Torah, or in contact with the one whoโ€™s learning, the hashpaโ€™ah of Torah is the hashpaโ€™ah of gadlus haโ€™adam. Itโ€™s the hashpaโ€™ah of the ratzon haBorei, and that can be felt even if youโ€™re not standing next to the person learning.

Thereโ€™s a powerful story that Rav Chaim Kanievsky would say over about the Chazon Ish. The Chazon Ish was once taking a walk, and he suddenly stopped and said to the person who was with him: โ€œYou should know, in this place, there were people speaking in learning.โ€

The Chazon Ish was able to sense the kedushah of Torah and detect the impression that Torah created, even though the people learning had left some time ago.

This is zeh lโ€™umas zeh.

Just as we understand the power of tumah โ€” of tumas ohel, of tumah retzutzah โ€” we have to use that same understanding to contemplate the power of the light of Torah. Itโ€™s a reality.

Their Laser vs. Our Laser

Perhaps we can illustrate this concept with an example related to current events. Everyoneโ€™s very excited about the new technology against missiles โ€” a laser that can shoot them down. Itโ€™s nice. Maybe itโ€™s good for sales, or for PR.

What is a laser? A laser is light โ€” light thatโ€™s condensed and focused, and very powerful.

That type of light is good for the umos haโ€™olam.

Our laser is the ohr of Torah. Our laser is the Mir Yeshiva, where thousands of people are learning together.

If the Chazon Ish could sense the ohr of Torah from people who were once standing outside and learning, then think about the power a yeshiva has. How much ohr is generated by people learning together? How much protection does it give?

Maybe this is something we can all try to be mechazek in โ€” bringing ohr into our homes by learning Torah at home. The bayis will be completely filled with light. Learn Torah, and the ohr of Torah will be the true protection for Klal Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael.
