Big Changes Can Happen Quickly
Parashas Bo
Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita
The Shelah Hakadosh cites the Arizal and the mekubalim as teaching that ืืงืจืืื ืืขืืจืจืช ืืช ืืืื, meaning that the parashas hashavua infuses the week with the power to relive the events of the parashah. Parashas Bo is the parashah of Yetzias Mitzrayim. Itโs part of a period of teshuvah that the mekubalim, the Shelah, and the Arizal call Shovavim, which is roshei teivos for Shemos, Vaโeira, Bo, etc.
The pinnacle of Shovavim is Parashas Bo, because thatโs when the Yidden left Mitzrayim. So this week is an auspicious time for us, too, to leave Mitzrayim. Even if we are not zocheh to the geulah sheleimah, every Yid can merit his own personal geulah from his tzaros, yissurim, and nisyonos.
A person might think that to go out of galus and elevate himself, he needs to make massive changes. Yet the Gemara (Avodah Zarah 17a) makes a powerful statement to the contrary.
It tells the story of Elazar ben Dordaya, who defiled himself with all sorts of tumah, visiting every zonah in the world. Once, a zonah remarked to him that heโs a lost case, and could never do teshuvah. After hearing that, he turned to all sorts of intermediaries, begging them to help him do teshuvah, but they all said no. Finally, he put his head between his knees and wept until his neshamah left his body.
A bas kol rang out and said that he was going into Olam Haba.
โYesh koneh olamo bโshaah achas,โ the Gemara concludes.
This person went from being the lowest of the low to attaining the highest heights of kedushah, to the extent that he was called โRabbi Elazar.โ
This conveys that if you want to make a change in your life and live in a better, higher, and holier world, you donโt need hours and hours. One dvar mussar that enters your heart can impact your life profoundly. And this week is a very auspicious time for a dvar mussar to make that big change in us, with Hashemโs help, because the paradigm of a major change that happens quickly is actually in this parashah.
In Mitzrayim, the Yidden were at the 49th level of tumah, as we know from the Arizal, yet very quickly, in 50 days, they ascended to the fiftieth level of kedushah at Mattan Torah. This is a lesson for all generations. In truth, they can happen at any time, but this week is a special time to make a real change in our life.
All it takes to make that change is a feeling. Who did Rโ Elazar ben Dordaya hear his mussar from? He didnโt hear it from a top mashgiach or a great rosh yeshiva. He heard it from a zonah โ yet it made an impression on him. It doesnโt matter who you hear it from; what matters is that you open your heart. If you listen with your heart, you can change.
Every Bit Has an Impact
I would like to discuss two points made by the Chofetz Chaim al haTorah that are especially relevant to our generation.
Rashi explains that the reason Klal Yisrael in Mitzrayim were commanded to take a sheep and perform the mitzvah of korban pesach is that they didnโt have the zechusim to leave Mitzrayim, so they needed mitzvos, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu therefore gave them two mitzvos: korban pesach and bris milah. How, wonders the Chofetz Chaim, did it help for Klal Yisrael to have two mitzvos? There are 613 mitzvos, and they were on the 49th level of tumah! They had to do teshuvah and fix everything, so how did two mitzvos sufficer?
The Chofetz Chaim explains that what mattered was that they took on something real, something that required mesirus nefesh. And the fact that they did something that was hard for them was very meaningful to Hashem. This, says the Chofetz Chaim, is a message to us in this challenging galus. Whatever we take on ourselves has a power to accomplish a great deal: ืืคืื ืฆืขืจื ืืืจื. If he said it in his times, then certainly in our times, when the galus has become even more intense, then every bit that we take upon ourselves is worth a tremendous amount.
Reinstating the Separation
Why did Hashem give Klal Yisrael these two mitzvos specifically?
Galus Mitzrayim began, the Midrash teaches (Shemos Rabbah), after the shevatim passed away and the Yidden stopped performing bris milah, so they should be like the Egyptians. Bris milah created a barrier between them, and since they wanted to be like the Egyptians and live among them, they did away with milah, which is the symbol of a Yid. The cheit that triggered the onset of the galus was ืึทืชึดึผืึธึผืึตื ืึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืึนืชึธื, when they started to act like the goyim and mingle with them. The tikkun was that they performed bris milah, which was a declaration that they were elevating and sanctifying themselves, and thereby restoring the separation between Jew and non-Jew.
This is something we can all use chizuk in. A bris milah we had, baruch Hashem, when we were eight days old, but the theme of bris milah, the distinction between us and the nations in our lifestyle and our aspirations, is something that requires chizuk โ especially in this galus, and especially in America.
Letโs think what we can take upon ourselves so that we can distance ourselves from tumah: what we can stop watching, reading, looking at, and what places we can stop frequenting. How can we make Havdalah, so that weโre not like them and we donโt run after what they do and act like them? That will be our bris milah, which we can be mekabel in the days of Shovavim Every person knows where he himself is holding, and what step he can take. Thatโs number one.
Slaughtering Our Idols
The mitzvah of korban pesach was given to Klal Yisrael because they were idol worshippers, as Rashi, Chazal, and the Rambam mention. The tikkun was that they took the deity of the Egyptians, and sacrificed it to Hashem, with mesirus nefesh. Can you imagine how the Egyptians were going out of their minds? The Yidden were killing their avodah zarah โ and the Yidden had believed in that avodah zarah until then too!
Yet they gave up their avodah zarah, and they did so with mesirus nefesh.
How is that relevant to our times?
One of the biggest forms of avodah zarah we have today is the non-Jewish attitude of ืึนึผืึดื ืึฐืขึนืฆึถื ืึธืึดื ืขึธืฉึธืื ืึดื ืึถืช ืึทืึทืึดื ืึทืึถึผื โ Iโm in charge, Iโm running the show. In the middle of a famous magazine that a lot of Yidden read, thereโs a section where they interview rich people โ the moguls, or whatever they call them, voguls, woguls โ and the interviewees give all sorts of tips for how you can become rich too. As if itโs not all mazel and siyatta dโShmaya! Some of them will stick in Hashem once in a while, but the basic belief is that itโs all about talent and rising above the competition. We need to slaughter this avodah zarah and really believe that everything is from Hashem. This emunah encompasses our whole outlook on life, such as how we give tzedakah, and so on.
The messages of bris milah and korban pesach give rise to two strong potential kabbalos. You can choose one of the two, according to where you are holding, during this auspicious time.
During the makkah of Choshech, many Yidden died because they didnโt want to leave Mitzrayim, as Rashi teaches. The Chofetz Chaim notes that this is a lesson for us as well. We want to leave galus; we want to elevate ourselves. So letโs be mekabel something together this week. Once you do that, Hashem will lead you in the direction you want to go, and He will lift you up to a much higher level than you thought possible. Then, you will be zocheh to geulos.
