The Anticipation Demarcation

Parashas Beshalach

Harav Hagaon Elimelech Reznik Shlita

One explanation Rashi cites (from Mechilta) for the word ื•ึทื—ึฒืžึปืฉึดืื™ื, in the passuk ื•ึทื—ึฒืžึปืฉึดืื™ื ืขึธืœื•ึผ ื‘ึฐื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ืจึธืึตืœ ืžึตืึถืจึถืฅ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึธื™ึดื, is that it means โ€œone-fifth,โ€ because only one-fifth of Klal Yisrael left Mitzrayim, while four-fifths died during Makkas Choshech.

How can it be that four-fifths of Klal Yisrael became so corrupted in Mitzrayim that they were punished with death? Donโ€™t Chazal praise the Yidden in Mitzrayim for maintaining their language, distinctive names, and clothing?

Furthermore, why did they die specifically during Makkas Choshech? The simple explanation is that this was so that the Mitzriyim, who were shrouded in darkness, shouldnโ€™t see Klal Yisrael burying their brethren. But perhaps we can suggest an additional explanation.

Before we do that, however, let us ask a question that is posed by the Rishonim: Dasan and Aviram were the reshaโ€™im of Klal Yisrael, and any time there was trouble being perpetrated, whether in Mitzrayim or in the Midbar โ€” with the mann, with Korachโ€™s rebellion โ€” they were front and center. How can it be that they were included in the one-fifth who left Mitzrayim, and did not die during Makkas Choshech?

One explanation is offered by the Maharil Diskin, who says that Dasan and Aviram were shotrim in Mitzrayim, and we know that the shotrim absorbed the blows of the Egyptians in the place of the Yidden who did the work; instead of hitting their Jewish brethren, they were beaten by the Mitzriyim. So Dasan and Aviram suffered their own pain to prevent other Yidden from suffering. When a person is nosei bโ€™ol im chaveiro and feels the pain of another person, he automatically receives the zechusim of that person and is included in the larger community, even if he himself is not worthy.

Therefore, although Dasan and Aviram personally were not worthy of leaving Mitzrayim, since a portion of Klal Yisrael did go out, Dasan and Aviram, who were hit by the Mitzriyim instead of hitting others, were automatically included in that group.

A Personal Krias Yam Suf

The passuk says, ื•ึทื™ึปึผื’ึทึผื“ ืœึฐืžึถืœึถืšึฐ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึทื™ึดื, implying that informants went back to Mitzrayim and told Pharaoh that the Yidden were not planning to return. Who were the informants? The Maharil Diskin cites a source that identifies these informants as Dasan and Aviram. According to this approach, Dasan and Aviram were not at the Yam Suf with the rest of Bnei Yisrael. They arrived at the Yam Suf only later, along with the Mitzriyim โ€” and Hashem split the Yam Suf a second time just for them.

Unbelievable! They missed the boat because they were busy with the evil act of informing Pharaoh what the Yidden were doing, but nevertheless, because they had shared the pain of the community, they were automatically included in that community, to the extent that they merited their own private, VIP Krias Yam Suf.

The Baalei HaTosafos al HaTorah also address the question of why Dasan and Aviram merited to leave Mitzrayim, and they give a shocking answer. Dasan and Aviram did not despair of the geulah; they were awaiting redemption.

We can infer that the reason four-fifths of Klal Yisrael died during Makkas Choshech was not because they were baalei aveirah, but because they were not awaiting redemption. They were very comfortable in Mitzrayim; indeed, Chazal say that many of the Yidden became very rich during the Makkos. For instance, during Makkas Dam they profited handsomely by selling water to the Mitzriyim; during Arov, wherever a Yid was standing the wild animals would not approach, so the Mitzriyim would hire Yidden, at a premium price, to stand near them. Many Yidden had nice houses and nice living conditions, so when the time came for Yetzias Mitzrayim, they had no motivation to leave. They failed to realize that living in Mitzrayim was not the goal, no matter how comfortable life there was, so they were not worthy of geulah.

Dasan and Aviram had a lot of issues, and did a lot of aveiros, but, for whatever reason, they did want to leave Mitzrayim and enter Eretz Yisrael. Since they were metzapim lโ€™yeshuah, and were not settled and comfortable in Mitzrayim, they were not part of the four-fifths that died. Rather, they belonged to the chamushim, which were differentiated from the other four-fifths by their longing for salvation.

Blinded by Brightness

Returning to the question of why four-fifths of Klal Yisrael died, we now understand, based on the words of the Baalei HaTosafos, that it was not a punishment for their sins. Rather, it was because they were comfortable in Mitzrayim, and were not awaiting redemption. They didnโ€™t realize that their life in Mitzrayim is not the ultimate purpose; itโ€™s only the tip of the iceberg, the beginning of a great future, in which we will grow and elevate ourselves through Kabbalas HaTorah. Anyone who didnโ€™t want that or need it had no zechus to leave, so they died in Mitzrayim.

As to the question of why this happened specifically during Makkas Choshech, the Malbim gives an incredible explanation in Parashas Bo, following the opinion of R’ Yehudah, cited in the Mechilta, regarding the source of Makkas Choshech. R’ Nechemiah says that the darkness came from Gehinnom, but R’ Yehudah says it was a choshech shel maalah, meaning that it came from a higher place in Shamayim, from Gan Eden.

The Malbim explains that according to R’ Yehudah, the darkness was not really darkness; it was actually a bright light, otherwise known as the ohr haganuz that Hakadosh Baruch Hu created at the beginning of Creation and hid away. The Midrash Tanchuma teaches that He hid it in Torah Shebeโ€™al Peh, because the world was not worthy of it, and a flesh-and-blood mortal being would not be able to cope with a light that bright. During Makkas Choshech, Hashem brought out that intense light.

When a person is confronted with an extremely bright light, he is blinded. Similarly, when a person is confronted with a spiritual light that he is unworthy of, and he does not possess the tools to absorb it, he is completely blinded.

The Malbim uses this idea to explain how it was possible that the Yidden had light when they entered the homes of the Mitzriyim, who were enveloped in darkness at the same time to the extent that they could not move. The Torah says that ื•ึผืœึฐื›ึธืœ ื‘ึฐึผื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ืจึธืึตืœ ื”ึธื™ึธื” ืื•ึนืจ ื‘ึฐึผืžื•ึนืฉึฐืื‘ึนืชึธื, and this means the very same light that illuminated for the Yidden blinded the Mitzriyim, who experienced pitch-black darkness while the Yidden experienced a light so powerful that they were able to see inside closets and barrels without opening them.

Can You Handle the Light?

Rabbosai, thereโ€™s a lesson we take from here. Hakadosh Baruch Hu is ohr; ruchniyus is ohr. Yet at times we are blinded by this light. Some people suffer terribly on Shabbos, and the minute Shabbos is over, a half hour or 35 minutes after shkiah, theyโ€™re already plotzing. At times, when davening takes two minutes longer, people are also plotzing.

We have to think about where this comes from. Itโ€™s not that we have so many more important things to do; itโ€™s that weโ€™re not really living on that level of Shabbos, of davening, of other spiritual concepts. A person has to learn how to elevate his Torah and mitzvos, and adapt himself to the ohr. He has to realize that Shabbos is a time to connect to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and he has to go deeper into davening and into Torah and mitzvos. Otherwise, if a person is not worthy, the ohr of ruchniyus and Torah blinds them, and when there is a drop more of that ohr than they can handle, they suffer from it.

We can now understand why it was specifically during Makkas Choshech that the differentiation was made between the one-fifth of Klal Yisrael that were worthy of redemption and the four-fifths who were not. When Hakadosh Baruch Hu brought out this great light, whoever had a connection to it, and realized that the life they were living was not the true purpose, no matter how comfortable they are, and that there is so much more to strive for โ€” those people had the capacity to receive that light. But those Yidden who had no connection to the light died during this makkah, because Makkas Choshech distinguished between those who were living life on paper, without any elevation, content with who they were and what they had, thinking that as long as they donโ€™t go down, everything is great.

Thatโ€™s not what life is about. Weโ€™re in galus, weโ€™re in Olam Hazeh, and we have to be metzapeh lโ€™yeshuah both on a global level and on a personal level. We see Hakadosh Baruch Hu turning over the world and bringing tremendous antisemitism to the world to wake us up and make us realize that we should not be comfortable no matter where we are. No matter how good we think we have it in galus, things can change for the worse, anywhere, in seconds. Weโ€™re waiting for Mashiach, for the geulah, for Hakadosh Baruch Hu to redeem us. Thatโ€™s on a global level.

On a personal level, we all need to elevate ourselves, elevate our Shabbos, elevate our davening, elevate all the mitzvos we do, and strive to become bigger and better people. With that, we should all be zocheh to yeshuos and nechamos speedily in our days.
