In other words, ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ means I will build a home for the Shechinah, a Beis Hamikdash โ€“ in the words of the Targum, ื•ืื‘ื ื™ ืœื™ื” ืžืงื“ืฉ.

Klal Yisrael have just experienced Krias Yam Suf and are singing shirah for it. Why, of all places and times, are they talking about building a Beis Hamikdash at that point? How does that relate to the shirah, and what does it have to do with ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™?

The Gemara (Shabbos 133) teaches that the meaning of the word ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ is โ€œani vehuโ€: ื”ื•ื™ ื“ื•ืžื” ืœื•, ืžื” ื”ื•ื ื—ื ื•ืŸ ื•ืจื—ื•ื ืืฃ ืืชื” ื”ื™ื” ื—ื ื•ืŸ ื•ืจื—ื•ื. This also needs to be explained. What is the connection of โ€œAni vehuโ€ โ€“ that a person compares himself to Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€“ to the events that just occurred?

Chazal say that a shifchah, a maidservant, saw at the Yam Suf what the navi Yechezkel ben Buzi didnโ€™t see: ืจืืชื” ืฉืคื—ื” ืขืœ ื”ื™ื ืžื” ืฉืœื ืจืื” ื™ื—ื–ืงืืœ ื‘ืŸ ื‘ื•ื–ื™. Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz asks the famous question: If the shifchah experienced such a powerful revelation of Hashem, why donโ€™t we know of any navi called โ€œShifchahโ€? We know of Yechezkel, but we donโ€™t know of the shifchah.

Rav Chaimโ€™s classic answer is, โ€œVeil zi iz gebliben a shifchah โ€“ she stayed a maidservant.โ€

Rav Wolbe (Alei Shur vol. 2) explains that Klal Yisraelโ€™s ability to identify Hashem with absolute clarity โ€“ ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ โ€“ represented the pinnacle of Yetzias Mitzrayim. Indeed, the Ramban notes that the word ื–ึถื” in the passuk ื‘ึผึทืขึฒื‘ื•ึผืจ ื–ึถื” ืขึธืฉื‚ึธื” ื”’ ืœึดื™ ื‘ึผึฐืฆึตืืชึดื™ ืžึดืžึผึดืฆึฐืจึธื™ึดื refers to ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™, when they pointed with their finger and were able to say, โ€œThis is Hakadosh Baruch Hu.โ€ That means they achieved a tremendous clarity of emunah. Rav Wolbe writes โ€“ and, interestingly, so does his father-in-law in the sefer Toras Avraham โ€“ that when a person achieves clarity in emunah and perceives Hakadosh Baruch Hu, it has to reflect his own Godliness, his own ruchniyus, his own tzelem Elokim. Klal Yisrael, at the Yam Suf, were able to point to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, but if that didnโ€™t reflect their own Godliness and didnโ€™t raise them up, then it was merely a passing experience.

This is why thereโ€™s a direct relationship between theื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ ย and the ani vehu of ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ. When a person experiences the clarify of Hakadosh Baruch Huโ€™s Godliness, that obligates him to be more Godly as well, to the extent that a human being can attain it, on his very limited level. If a personโ€™s intellectual knowledge of Hakadosh Baruch Hu doesnโ€™t filter down into his own everyday life, then he has missed the boat. Perhaps this is what Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz meant when he said, โ€œZi is gebliben a shifchah.โ€ She saw the ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™, possibly even more clearly than Yechezkel did, but the problem was that she didnโ€™t connect with what she saw; there was no ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ, no ani vehu, no lifting herself up to the ืžื” ื”ื•ื, ืืฃ ืืชื”.

A person has, on one hand, the ability to be Godly, and, on the other hand, the obligation to be Godly. And when thereโ€™s a detachment between theื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ ย and the ani vehu, then no matter how powerful the spiritual experience was, the shifchah remained a shifchah, because she didnโ€™t connect it to herself and use it as a springboard for personal growth. She never reached the second part of the phrase ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ โ€“ she saw theื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ , but the ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ didnโ€™t happen.

Chazal tell us that Yeshayah Hanavi experienced an even clearer perception of the Maaseh Merkavah than did Yechezkel. Why, then, do Chazal say that the shifchah at the sea experienced a greater revelation than that of Yechezkel, rather than that of Yeshayah?

Rav Wolbe explains that Yechezkel is called โ€œben adam,โ€ and one of the reasons is that he saw the image of a human on the Kisei Hakavod. What that means, for our purposes, is that he saw that a person has the capacity for Godliness. Every person contains the Shechinah within himself and can achieve ืžื” ื”ื•ื, ืืฃ ืืชื”. When Chazal stress that the vision of the shifchahย  at the Yam Suf was greater than that of Yechezkel specifically, they are telling us that this should have obligated her to see at least what he saw: the ben adam, the mentch, the ability of a person to resemble Hakadosh Baruch Hu. But she did not capitalize on that opportunity. The concept of ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ teaches us that any spiritual exposure we experience must spur us to become better people.

Reflected Within

Avraham Avinu, we know, told Hakadosh Baruch Hu to wait while he tended to his three guests, who were malachim disguised as Arabs, and Chazal observe that he had his priorities in order:ื’ื“ื•ืœื” ื”ื›ื ืกืช ืื•ืจื—ื™ื ืžืงื‘ืœืช ืคื ื™ ื”ืฉื›ื™ื ื”. The meforshim wonder, how did Avraham Avinu know that hachnassas orchim takes precedence? Which posek did he consult with?

The baalei mussar explain that Avraham Avinu understood that if Hakadosh Baruch Hu revealed Himself to him, then the only possible purpose of that revelation must be so that he should emulate Hakadosh Baruch Hu and do chessed: ืžื” ื”ื•ื ืืฃ ืืชื”. He realized that kabbalas pnei haShechinah is not merely an intellectual event, but rather an opportunity to become more like Hashem. If so, then itโ€™s obvious that hachnassas orchim takes precedence.

With this in mind, we can understand the other explanation of ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ โ€“ Iโ€™ll build a Beis Hamikdash. The Beis Hamikdash is the place of hashraas haShechinah, a naveh for Hakadosh Baruch Hu. We know, however, that the true dwelling place of the Shechinah is inside every Yid: ื•ืฉื›ื ืชื™ ื‘ืชื•ื›ื• ืœื ื ืืžืจ, ืืœื ื‘ืชื•ื›ื. The hashraas haShechinah in the Beis Hamikdash is really only an expression of the hashraas haShechinah in every Yid, and when the Shechinah dwells in each Yid then on a communal basis it dwells in the Beis Hamikdash for all of Klal Yisrael and for the entire briah.

Practically speaking, what does it mean that the Shechinah is inside every person? Where does this find expression? In the concept of ืžื” ื”ื•ื ืืฃ ืืชื”, that a person is divine and Godly.

At the Yam Suf, Klal Yisrael achieved clarify in emunah โ€“ ื–ึถื” ืงึตืœึดื™ โ€“ and as a result of that clarity, they were obligated to become Godly: ื•ึฐืึทื ึฐื•ึตื”ื•ึผ. That process of becoming Godly brings the Shechinah down into this world, which is essentially the process of building the Beis Hamikdash. The Beis Hamikdash is the inevitable result of a human being, a ben adam, becoming a dwelling place for the Shechinah. Thatโ€™s not an intellectual ideal; itโ€™s a practical matter of ืžื” ื”ื•ื ืืฃ ืืชื”. What this means is that every time a person shteigs, every time he achieves a bit more dveikus in Hakadosh Baruch Hu, every time he climbs to a higher dargah, whether in davening or learning, he is automatically obligated to step up his game in ืžื” ื”ื•ื ืืฃ ืืชื”. Thatโ€™s the expression of hashraas haShechinah, and thatโ€™s what brings further hashraas haShechinah inside of us.
