In presenting the mitzvah of shemittah, the Torah says: ื›ึดึผื™ ืชึธื‘ึนืื•ึผ ืึถืœ ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืึฒื ึดื™ ื ึนืชึตืŸ ืœึธื›ึถื ื•ึฐืฉึธืื‘ึฐืชึธื” ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืฉึทืื‘ึธึผืช ืœึทื”’, informing us that this mitzvah applies only in Eretz Yisrael. But why does the Torah have to add the words: ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืึฒื ึดื™ ื ึนืชึตืŸ ืœึธื›ึถื? We all know that Eretz Yisrael is a matanah from Hakadosh Baruch Hu, as He promised to Avraham Avinu at bris bein habesarim.

R’ Yerucham explains, in Daas Torah, based on the words of the Raavad in his hakdamah to his sefer Baalei Hanefesh, that a person could easily think that heโ€™s the owner of his property and in control of his possessions. Therefore, Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave us many mitzvos that remind us that we are not the owners โ€” in the words of the Raavad, ืœืžืขืŸ ื™ื“ืข ื”ืื“ื ื›ื™ ื™ืฉ ืœื• ื‘ื•ืจื ื”ืžื•ืฉืœ ืขืœื™ื•.

The Raavad gives the example of a person who owns a field, and thinks the field is his. Yet there are dinim of how he may plow his field and plant his field. When the time comes to harvest the produce of his field, he needs to give leket and peiah to the poor. Once thatโ€™s done, he is obligated to give terumos and maasros. Then, when he prepares his dough, thereโ€™s a mitzvah of challah. And when he finally comes to eat his food, he needs to make a brachah. Therefore, says R’ Yerucham, the Torah adds the words: ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืึฒื ึดื™ ื ึนืชึตืŸ ืœึธื›ึถื, conveying that since Hashem gave us the land as a gift, a person might feel as though he owns it.

The Torah then says: ื•ึฐืฉึธืื‘ึฐืชึธื” ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืฉึทืื‘ึธึผืช ืœึทื”’, and Rashi explains that โ€œืฉึทืื‘ึธึผืช ืœึทื”’โ€ means that shemittah is similar to the weekly Shabbos, about which the Torah says:ย  ื•ึฐื™ื•ึนื ื”ึทืฉึฐึผืื‘ึดื™ืขึดื™ ืฉึทืื‘ึธึผืช ืœึทื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ. Just as on Shabbos we must stop all our work, moving out of kochi veโ€™otzem yadi and realizing that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is the Borei Olam, so, too, the idea of shemittah is to realize that we are not the true owners of the land. R’ Yerucham adds that the Torah expresses this concept explicitly, when it says: ื•ึฐื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืœึนื ืชึดืžึธึผื›ึตืจ ืœึดืฆึฐืžึดืชึปืช ื›ึดึผื™ ืœึดื™ ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ื›ึดึผื™ ื’ึตืจึดื™ื ื•ึฐืชื•ึนืฉึธืื‘ึดื™ื ืึทืชึถึผื ืขึดืžึธึผื“ึดื™. A person would think that itโ€™s his land, and heโ€™s the owner, so he can do whatever he wants with it and sell it forever, but the Torah comes and tell us that no, we canโ€™t sell Eretz Yisrael forever, because it belongs to Hashem. We are mere geirim and toshavim, living as guests in His land. He is the true owner, not us.

Thereโ€™s a famous story about Rav Chaim Volozhiner, who was sitting in beis din adjudicating a case in which two people were fighting over a piece of land. As they were arguing back and forth, Rav Chaim Volozhiner bent down and placed his ear on the ground. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ they wondered.

โ€œReuven is saying the land is his, Shimon is saying that itโ€™s his, and I want to hear what the land is saying. Do you know what the land is saying? โ€˜Both Reuven and Shimon belong to me. After 120, you will be mine.โ€™โ€

This is an important lesson from the mitzvah of shemittah.

Which Brachah is Greater?

Thereโ€™s another important lesson that we can learn from this mitzvah. First, the Torah promises that if you keep shemittah, the land will produce its fruits even though it was not cultivated, and youโ€™ll be satisfied: ื•ึฐื ึธืชึฐื ึธื” ื”ึธืึธืจึถืฅ ืคึดึผืจึฐื™ึธื”ึผ ื•ึทืึฒื›ึทืœึฐืชึถึผื ืœึธืฉึนื‚ื‘ึทืข ื•ึดื™ืฉึทืื‘ึฐืชึถึผื ืœึธื‘ึถื˜ึทื— ืขึธืœึถื™ื”ึธ. Rashi explains that youโ€™ll have everything you need in your stomach, and youโ€™ll live calmly in your land, without worrying about not having what to eat.

The next passuk says: ื•ึฐื›ึดื™ ืชึนืืžึฐืจื•ึผ ืžึทื” ื ึนึผืื›ึทืœ ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื” ื”ึทืฉึฐึผืื‘ึดื™ืขึดืช ื”ึตืŸ ืœึนื ื ึดื–ึฐืจึธืข ื•ึฐืœึนื ื ึถืึฑืกึนืฃ ืึถืช ืชึฐึผื‘ื•ึผืึธืชึตื ื•ึผ โ€” if someone asks, โ€œWhat will we eat? I didnโ€™t work, I didnโ€™t plant, I didnโ€™t gather my produce.โ€

Hashem promises: ื•ึฐืฆึดื•ึดึผื™ืชึดื™ ืึถืช ื‘ึดึผืจึฐื›ึธืชึดื™ ืœึธื›ึถื ื‘ึทึผืฉึธึผืื ึธื” ื”ึทืฉึดึผืืฉึดึผืื™ืช ื•ึฐืขึธืฉึธื‚ืช ืึถืช ื”ึทืชึฐึผื‘ื•ึผืึธื” ืœึดืฉึฐืืœึนืฉื ื”ึทืฉึธึผืื ึดื™ื โ€” Iโ€™ll give a special brachah and the earth will yield so much produce that there will be enough for three years.

It seems that by questioning how ย he will have food without cultivating his crops, a person is zocheh to a much bigger brachah โ€” he will yield three yearsโ€™ worth of produce in one year โ€” and without asking the question, he isnโ€™t zocheh to that.

The Sforno says, however, that it is exactly the opposite. The pesukim are talking about two levels of bitachon. The real baal bitachon doesnโ€™t ask any questions; even though he doesnโ€™t see how itโ€™s going to happen, he trusts Hakadosh Baruch Hu, Who gave him this mitzvah of shemittah, and he is confident that heโ€™ll have what he needs. In return, Hakadosh Baruch Hu promises him that heโ€™ll have enough to satisfy him; his crops wonโ€™t produce as much, but even a little will sustain him. Heโ€™ll have to work less, do less harvesting, wash fewer dishes, yet heโ€™ll have everything he needs.

Someone who is on a lower level of bitachon asks questions: โ€œWhat will we eat? I donโ€™t see the berachah, the bank account is low, thereโ€™s no money coming in, how is this going to work?โ€

In response, Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, ื•ึฐืฆึดื•ึดึผื™ืชึดื™ ืึถืช ื‘ึดึผืจึฐื›ึธืชึดื™, I will grant you abundance, so that you will see the quantity in front of your face, and youโ€™ll have enough produce for three years. But youโ€™ll have to work harder, youโ€™ll have less time for avodas Hashem, and youโ€™ll be more connected to gashmiyus. Therefore, the first level, that of the true baal bitachon, results in a much greater brachah.

The Noam Elimelech, citing his brother, R’ Zusha, offers a different approach. R’ Zusha asks: Why does the Torah quote the question of the person who asks, โ€œWhat will we eatโ€? Couldnโ€™t the Torah just say, ื•ึฐืฆึดื•ึดึผื™ืชึดื™ ืึถืช ื‘ึดึผืจึฐื›ึธืชึดื™ โ€” Iโ€™m going to give you a bracha for three years?

He answers that Hakadosh Baruch Hu, in His kindness, created pipelines of shefa and berachah, through which He showers us with blessing constantly. If, however, someone falls in his level of bitachon, that creates a blockage in the pipelines, and then the person is not zocheh to this abundance. The Torah therefore promises that even if a person falls in his level of bitachon, questioning what he will eat and thereby blocking the pipelines, Hashem will nevertheless supply him with the special berachah granted to those who keep shemittah. Even on the lower level of bitachon, Hashem says, youโ€™ll have produce for three years.

Calm as an Infant

In the introduction to Shaar Habitachon, the Chovos Halevavos writes that if a person does not have full bitachon in Hashem, but relies on other people or entities, the Divine assistance he receives weakens.

Dovid Hamelech declares: ืึดื ืœึนื ืฉึดืื•ึดึผื™ืชึดื™ ื•ึฐื“ื•ึนืžึทืžึฐืชึดึผื™ ื ึทืคึฐืฉึดืื™ ื›ึฐึผื’ึธืžึปืœ ืขึฒืœึตื™ ืึดืžึผื•ึน ื›ึทึผื’ึธึผืžึปืœ ืขึธืœึทื™ ื ึทืคึฐืฉึดืื™, and the Gaon explains that a Yid must view himself like an infant nursing from his mother. The infant does not worry what will be after he finishes eating, and does not fret about where his next meal will come from. Rather, he is completely calm and relaxed. That is the feeling that results from having emunah and bitachon that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is taking care of us. Weโ€™re totally dependent upon His goodness, like an infant relies on his mother.

The Gemara (Sotah 2a) says that a bas kol announces: ื‘ืช ืคืœื•ื ื™ ืœืคืœื•ื ื™ ื‘ื™ืช ืคืœื•ื ื™ ืœืคืœื•ื ื™ ืฉื“ื” ืคืœื•ื ื™ ืœืคืœื•ื ื™. These three things are crucial for every person โ€” a shidduch, a home, and a field, meaning parnassah. A person might think that these three central needs are things he has to take care of and invest tremendous effort to obtain. But the Gemara is telling us the opposite. For these three things, a bas kol declares that this is all prepared for him, so thereโ€™s nothing to worry about. The more a person trusts in Hashem and believes that He is in charge, that He is kol yachol, and that He is tov uโ€™meitiv, while acknowledging that he himself is not the owner, the more goodness He will receive from Hashem.

In the zechus of the chizuk in emunah and bitachon that we take out of this parashah, we should all be zocheh to return to Eretz Yisrael and be able to fulfill all of Hashemโ€™s mitzvos properly, ื‘ืžื”ืจื” ื‘ื™ืžื™ื ื•.
