Parashas Behaaloscha

Harav Hagaon Yosef Elefant Shlita

At the end of this week’s parshah, the Torah tells us about Miriam and Aharonโ€™s speaking about Moshe, and then adds, ื•ึฐื”ึธืึดื™ืฉื ืžึนืฉึถืื” ืขึธื ึธื• ืžึฐืึนื“ ืžึดื›ึนึผืœ ื”ึธืึธื“ึธื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ืขึทืœ ืคึฐึผื ึตื™ ื”ึธืึฒื“ึธืžึธื”. This seems like a strange place to tell us about Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s anavah, as we will explain.

We know Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s anavah was the catalyst for all the lofty levels he attained. Chazal say that all the neviโ€™im experienced their prophecy through an ืืกืคืงืœืจื™ื ืฉืื™ื ื” ืžืื™ืจื”, while Moshe Rabbeinu saw his nevuah through an ืืกืงืคืœืจื™ื ื”ืžืื™ืจื”, a clear glass. The sefarim explain that since was so humble, he did not take up any place, so there was nothing blocking the nevuah from coming through.

Mosheโ€™s anavah was also the reason he merited to be the one who received the Torah. Interestingly, R’ Chaim Volozhiner, in Ruach Chaim at the beginning of Avos, discusses this middah of Moshe Rabbeinu and observes, shockingly, that if there would be any other person who would achieve the level of anavah that Moshe Rabbeinu did, he would also be mekabel the Torah.

In other words, when a person doesnโ€™t have a โ€œzichโ€ โ€” in a healthy way, obviously โ€” and is not wrapped up in himself or hold of himself, then he becomes a worthy receptable to be mekabel from Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

The Maharal (Tiferes Yisrael ch. 23) also explains that the reason Moshe Rabbeinu was the one who received the Torah was that he completely negated himself to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, through his anavah.

The Meshech Chochmah, in Parashas Shemos, also says that anavah means that a person is not wrapped up in himself, and the reason Moshe Rabbeinu was the anav mikol adam was that he was never meisiach daas from Hakadosh Baruch Hu โ€” because the moment a personโ€™s attention wanders from Hakadosh Baruch Hu, he naturally becomes wrapped up in himself. Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s anavah meant that he understood that everything he has is not him; it’s only from Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Since he was never meisiach daas from Hakadosh Baruch Hu, he was able to be mekabel the Torah.

Anavah, by the way, doesn’t mean Iโ€™m a nebach, or I donโ€™t have koach. The passuk says (Devarim 8:18), A person is allowed to feel that he has ื›ึนึผื—ึท ืœึทืขึฒืฉื‚ื•ึนืช ื—ึธื™ึดืœ โ€” he has talents, and heโ€™s able to succeed โ€” but he has to know that it comes from Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Gaavah is not a function of bein adam lโ€™chaveiro; it means forgetting Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The more of an anav a person is, and the less wrapped up he is in himself, the less he is meisiach daas from Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

We now have three sources that teach that Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s anavah was the reason he was mekabel the Torah: R’ Chaim Volozhiner, the Maharal, and the Meshech Chochmah.

If so, it would seem that the appropriate place for the Torah to reveal to us that Moshe was the ultimate anav would be in the context of Mattan Torah โ€” not in the context of the incident in which Miriam and Aharon spoke against him and Miriam was stricken with tzaraas. Why, there, does the Torah suddenly inform of us Mosheโ€™s anavah?

The answer lies in the following statement of the Rambam, at the end of Hilchos Tumas Tzaraas (ch. 16), where he discusses the prohibition of lashon hara:

The Rambam draws a kal vโ€™chomer from Miriam Haneviah, who spoke about her brother and contracted tzaraas โ€” even though she was older than him, and she brought him up, and even endangered herself to save him, and didnโ€™t even speak disparagingly of him but merely erred in comparing him to other neviโ€™im, and he wasnโ€™t even bothered by what she said, as the passuk attests there that he was the humblest man who ever lived! Yet Miriam was nevertheless punished, so someone who speaks outright lashon hara will certainly be punished.

The reason, then, that the Torah mentions Mosheโ€™s anavah here is to emphasize that he was not makpid about what Miriam had said.

Regarding the Torahโ€™s description of Moshe as an anav, Rashi comments, ืฉืคืœ ื•ืกื‘ืœืŸ โ€” humble and tolerant; he was able to tolerate someone else speaking badly of him.

In other words, the concept of anavah is expressed in the Torah as the ability to hear someone speaking badly of you and not being bothered by it: โ€œIt doesn’t matter โ€” I’m not such a hot shot, I’m not such a chashuveh guy. I’m not wrapped up myself, so it doesn’t make a difference if somebody speaks badly about me.โ€ Savlanus and anavah are synonymous.

The Gemara (Shabbos 30b) teaches that a person should always be an anav like Hillel and not a kapdan like Shammai. Anavah and kapdanus are being contrasted here as two opposites, but what connection is there between the two? A kapdan implies someone who is inflexible and rigid, and how is that the opposite of someone who is humble?

But someone who is an anav is not a kapdan, because he doesn’t exist; he doesnโ€™t take up space. Not in a depressive, emotional way, but in a real way of dveikus to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Anavah doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™m nothing. It means that everything I have is from the Eibishter, so I have nothing of my own to be makpid about.

This is what the Rambam expresses when he explains that the Torahโ€™s statement about Mosheโ€™s anavah comes to teach us that Moshe was not bothered by what Miriam said.

A similar expression of Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s anavah appears earlier in the parashah, in the story of Eldad and Meidad. When they were prophesying, Yehoshua ran to Moshe to inform him, and said, โ€œื›ึฐึผืœึธืึตื โ€“ punish them!โ€ Mosheโ€™s response was, โ€œIf only all the Yidden could be neviโ€™im!โ€

In other words, Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s anavah caused two things. One, as we explained, it caused him to be mekabel the Torah, as per the three sources we cited above. And two, it caused him to not be a kapdan. If we would be asked, where in the Torah is the appropriate place to highlight Mosheโ€™s anavah, we would say in the context of his receiving the Torah. But the Torah chose to focus on it specifically in the context of his not being a kapdan.

Clearly, the idea of not being makpid about what other people do to you and not being wrapped up in yourself is so important that the Torah deemed it more befitting to mention Mosheโ€™s anavah in that context.

This is astounding. Itโ€™s very nice, the Torah is teaching, that Moshe was mekabel the Torah, and yes, that was indeed the reason he was mekabel the Torah. But the result of his anavah was that he was not a kapdan, and he was able to tolerate someone elseโ€™s criticism, even though it was incorrect. That ability to be a savlan is so important that the Torah chose to reveal the extent of Mosheโ€™s anavah specifically in that context, and not in connection to Mattan Torah. When he heard someone not speaking with the respect due him and he wasnโ€™t bothered, thatโ€™s where his anavah is emphasized.

We see from here the crucial role that the Torah attributes to this quality of anavah and its impact on a personโ€™s everyday behavior.

Gut Shabbos.
