Harav Hagaon Elimelech Reznick shlita

In this weekโ€™s parashah, Klal Yisrael travels for the first time from Har Sinai, as the passuk says: ื•ึทื™ึดึผืกึฐืขื•ึผ ืžึตื”ึทืจ ื”’ ื“ึถึผืจึถืšึฐ ืฉึฐืืœึนืฉึถืืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ื•ึทืึฒืจื•ึนืŸ ื‘ึฐึผืจึดื™ืช ื”’ ื ึนืกึตืขึท ืœึดืคึฐื ึตื™ื”ึถื ื“ึถึผืจึถืšึฐ ืฉึฐืืœึนืฉึถืืช ื™ึธืžึดื™ื ืœึธืชื•ึผืจ ืœึธื”ึถื ืžึฐื ื•ึผื—ึธื”. Directly afterward, the Torah recounts the incident of the misonenim, followed by the episode of The Torah says that they were crying for meat and longing for the fish they had eaten in Mitzrayim, but the Gemara in Yoma adds that they were also crying about the prohibitions of arayos, as indicated in the passuk They were crying, Chazal say, regarding matters related to family, meaning the arayos that had become forbidden to them at Mattan Torah.

The Reโ€™em and Maharsha note that Mattan Torah had taken place almost a year earlier, so why were they crying over these prohibitions now? It seems that their crying was related to their departure from Har Sinai.

The Rishonim cite Chazalโ€™s statement that when Klal Yisrael traveled from Har Sinai, they did so like a child running away from school. Apparently, they left Har Sinai a little too quickly, which indicated a departure from the Torah and a feeling of relief to get out of the beis midrash and receive no more mitzvos.

The passuk in Mishlei (18:1) states, ืœึฐืชึทืึฒื•ึธื” ื™ึฐื‘ึทืงึตึผืฉื ื ึดืคึฐืจึธื“, and the Vilna Gaon explains that a person who separates himself from the Torah will automatically seek to fulfill his desires. The two go together. Conversely, a person who is filled with Torah will be saved from taavah, since the Torah has the power to satiate and sustain a person. Every single taavah can be quelled through learning Torah.

The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh writes: ื›ื™ ื”ืชื•ืจื” ื›ื•ืœืœืช ื›ืœ ื”ื˜ื•ื‘ื•ืช ืฉื‘ืขื•ืœื โ€” any possible good in this world can be found in the Torah. So when a person is learning Torah, not only does it empower him to triumph over the yetzer hara and break his desires, it actually replaces those desires. Torah fulfills a person so that he no longer desires other things.

A Yidโ€™s neshamah is from a high place and is not satisfied with the pleasures of this world, as the Mesillas Yesharim teaches regarding the passuk ื•ึฐื’ึทื ื”ึทื ึถึผืคึถืฉื ืœึนื ืชึดืžึธึผืœึตื. A Jewish neshamah is thirsty; Yidden are the thirstiest people in the world. Nonreligious Jews travel the world searching for meaning, hungry for all sorts of adventures. They have a nefesh that needs to be filled, and can be filled by the Torah โ€” but if a person is disconnected from the Torah, then automatically that soul will crave other things.

Why Run Away?

The two pesukim that precede the incident of the misonenim, beginning with the words ื•ึทื™ึฐื”ึดื™ ื‘ึดึผื ึฐืกึนืขึท ื”ึธืึธืจึนืŸ, are bracketed by backwards nuns, and according to one opinion of Chazal (Shabbos 116a), this is to indicate that these pesukim are out of place.

Why are they written here?

Because, as Rashi teaches, the Torah wanted to insert a break between one puranus and another. The Ramban explains that the Torah did not want to list three consecutive puraniyos, so that Klal Yisrael should not, chas vโ€™shalom, be muchzak bโ€™puranus. Therefore, the pesukim of ื•ึทื™ึฐื”ึดึ›ื™ ื‘ึดึผื ึฐืกึนึฅืขึท ื”ึธืึธืจึนึ–ืŸ were inserted here to make a split between the first and second puraniyos. According to the Ramban, the first puranus is that of traveling from Har Sinai happily, like a child running away from school, and the second and third are that of the misonenim and the taavah for meat.

We can understand why the second and third incidents, which involved punishment, are deemed puranus. Members of Klal Yisrael died because of those misdeeds. But why is the first one, ื•ึทื™ึดึผืกึฐืขื•ึผ ืžึตื”ึทืจ ื”’, deemed a puranus, which connotes punishment? It could be called a cheit, perhaps, but why puranus? The Yidden were not punished for this, nor did they seem to suffer from it in any way?

Perhaps this is why Rashi, in Shabbos, explains the Gemara differently.

In line with the Rambanโ€™s view, however, we can explain that a child who runs away from school does so because he views school as a burden. A person tries to escape from a place that he finds uncomfortable and difficult.

The Shulchan Aruch rules, based on a Gemara in Berachos, that one may not take large steps when leaving a shul, and Rabbeinu Yonah explains that one who takes large steps indicates that he is leaving from a makom tirchah to a makom menuchah.

A personโ€™s natural tendency is to run away from a burdensome place to a relaxing place. But if heโ€™s running out a shul, heโ€™s got it all wrong. Heโ€™s showing that the shul, to him, is a makom tirchah, and outside shul is a makom menuchah, when really the shul should be the place of tranquility. Unfortunately, itโ€™s not that way for everyone; the Sefer Chareidim says that a beis knesses is an orchard for tzaddikim and a prison for reshaโ€™im. The same shul could be a beautiful, enjoyable place for one person, and a jail for another. If a person runs out of shul, heโ€™s showing that itโ€™s the latter.

Similarly, when Klal Yisrael ran away from Har Sinai, they showed that it was a makom tirchah for then.

An Illness of the Soul

In his sefer on Megillas Rus, the Dubno Maggid explains that the principle of ืฉื›ืจ ืžืฆื•ื” ืžืฆื•ื” means that there is no greater pleasure and joy in the world than doing a mitzvah, and the greatest reward a person can receive for doing a mitzvah is the ability to do another mitzvah. He explains that if a person does not feel that pleasure, itโ€™s because he is suffering from a ื—ื•ืœื™ ื”ื ืคืฉ โ€” an illness of the soul. We are hampered by the material nature of the body, which creates a sickness of sorts in the soul and prevents us from enjoying the pleasure of doing mitzvos. The Dubno Maggid cites the Rambamโ€™s teaching that illness of the soul is similar to illness of the body, and he gives the following mashal.

A child was very ill and refused to eat. His worried parents brought him to doctor after doctor, but to no avail. Finally, a friend of the childโ€™s father decided to intervene. He visited the child in the hospital and told him, โ€œIf you eat this piece of bread, I will give you five gold coins.โ€ Excited by the offer, the child ate the bread. The next day, this person returned and offered the child ten gold coins if he would eat some soup and other food, and again the child ate. He kept on paying the child to eat, and after a few weeks he approached the father and said, โ€œI got him to eat! He is healed!โ€

โ€œYou fool!โ€ the father said. โ€œA person who has to be paid to eat is sick! If the child canโ€™t eat the food on his own and enjoy it without being paid, thatโ€™s proof that he is not healed!โ€

Similarly, explained the Dubno Maggid, if a person doesnโ€™t feel pleasure and joy when he does a mitzvah, and feels that he should be rewarded in some other way for doing it, thatโ€™s a sign of ื—ื•ืœื™ ื”ื ืคืฉ. The true reward for a mitzvah is the resulting geshmak and dveikus to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

This is true of every mitzvah.

Some people love and enjoy Shabbos, while others are busy looking at their watch during Shalosh Seudos and running to the earliest minyan for Maariv on Motzaโ€™ei Shabbos so that they can get the day over with. If a person learns about Shabbos and develops an appreciation for Shabbos, then he will experience it as a day of delight.

Similarly, if a person realizes what an opportunity it is to do any other mitzvos and achieve dveikus with Hashem, he would feel such joy, pleasure, and tranquility when doing mitzvos that he would not see this as a tirchah at all. If a person does not feel that way, it means he is suffering from an illness of the soul.

We asked why the Rambam describes Klal Yisraelโ€™s running away from Har Sinai as puranus, punishment. We can now explain that if a person does not appreciate the life-giving nature of Torah and mitzvos, that is a ื—ื•ืœื™ ื”ื ืคืฉ, and that is a punishment in and of itself.

Hakadosh Baruch Hu should enable us all to derive tremendous satisfaction, joy, and pleasure from learning His Torah and doing His mitzvos.

Gut Shabbos.
